2012-13 MEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON OUTLOOK

The Point Park University men’s basketball team in 2012-13 has no shortage of scorers. Not

only did the Pioneers lead NAIA Division II points per game last year at 88.6 ppg, they

have added to their collection of high-scoring players this year. Point Park has 3 of 5 start-

ers returning from the 2011-12 team that was 13-12 overall and made the conference play-

offs at 6-6. Point Park had four double-digit scorers a year ago, and three are returning

with NAIA DII scoring leader T.J. Heatherington (PG, Sr., 24.5 ppg) back in the fold along

with his brother Robbie Heatherington (G, Jr. 14.1 ppg) and Jimmy Taylor (G, Sr., 13.4

ppg). Point Park also returns another perimeter threat, Asa Braxton (G, Sr., 7.8 ppg), who

came on strong at the end of last year, and post player Josh Pohlot (F, Jr., 4.3 ppg).

Added to the mix are several players — transfers especially — who will impact the lineup

immediately. The Pioneers have added to the frontcourt to make up for the loss of starting

forwards Devon Alexander (F, 6-5, 13.7 ppg) and Dante Anglin (F, 6-5, 6.4 ppg, 9.6 rpg),

who have graduated. They have also added to a backcourt that was already stocked with

returnees.

Putting it all together makes the Pioneers a very guard-oriented team, that although does

not have a lot of height, is still taller than last year. The guard-heavy lineup will play right

into hands of head coach Bob Rager’s fast-past style, which has had the Pioneers in the top

five in the country in scoring five of the last seven years. Rager, in his 24th year at his alma

mater, employs run-and-gun system that encourages players to always shoot when open

and is focused on creating a lot of possessions on offense.

That scheme plays very well to the talents of Point Park’s three returning starters. Point

guard T.J. Heatherington was a high volume scorer last year but also gets his teammates

involved. The NAIA DII First Team All-American not only led the nation in scoring (24.5

ppg), he was also fourth in assists at 6.2 apg. Heatherington, a Serra Catholic alum, is re-

lied on to set the tone by pushing the ball up floor, and he can look to shoot, drive or pass.

T.J. Heatherington had plenty of targets last year and this year, most notable returning

wings Robbie Heatherington and Jimmy Taylor. Both were among the leading 3-point

shooters in the nation in 2011-12. Taylor, from Keystone Oaks High School, shot 38% from

long distance last year and was 10th in the country with 3.04 treys per game. Robbie

Heatherington shot 35% from long distance and was 26th in NAIA DII with 2.58 treys per

game. Another wing player returning is Asa Braxton, a senior from Hampton High School,

played his best ball the second half of last year. He averaged 7.8 ppg for the year but

scored 15.2 ppg as a starting player the last eight games of 2011-12. Braxton shot 38% per-

cent from distance, and he can also drive to the hoop.

While the Pioneers should be perimeter oriented with a lot of 3-point attempts, a welcome

addition for the team is center Babatunde Somoye, a 6-9, 280-pound transfer from NAIA

Langston (Okla.) University. Somoye, also known as “Babs”, is a native of London, Eng-

land, who gives the Pioneers a formidable post presence on both ends of the floor. He is a

former soccer player with great feet, soft hands and a nice touch around the basket.

Another top newcomer is Josh Arnold, a 6-5 swing player who transferred from WVU

Tech. Arnold was a high scorer at Monessen High School, and he’ll have opportunities to

score inside and out for the Pioneers. Also in the same mold as Arnold is freshman Matt

Noszka (F, 6-4, Fr.), a Chartiers Valley High School product who sat out last season at

Point Park. He is a very athletic and active player on both ends who can create mismatches

as an inside-outside threat. Another transfer who will add to the arsenal of guards is Gabe

McNeal (G, 6-1, Jr.), who was at NCAA DII Shaw (N.C.) University. McNeal, the son of

former Pitt star Chris McNeal (1990-93), did not play much on a very good Shaw team but

averaged 12.3 ppg at Cecil (Md.) CC the year before. He gives the Pioneers yet another

wing player who can fill it up from the 3-point line, and he can also create off the dribble.

Other newcomers are J.J. Krysinsky, a freshman guard from Fox Chapel HS, and Jared

Sturt, a freshman forward from Maumee Valley Country Day in Toledo, Ohio. Also add-

ing to the depth are newcomers Blair Jones (C, 6-4, Sr.), from Duquesne, Pa., Algie Love-

lace (G, 5-10, So.) , from Washington, D.C. and Romel Powell (G, 6-1, Fr.), from Pittsburgh.

Bob Rager is the all-time winningest coach at his alma mater, Point Park University. The 2012-13 season is his 24th year as head coach of the Pioneers. Rager took over the

Point Park program for the 1989-90. Since then, he has amassed a record of 323-313 (.508). In 2010-11, he passed the legendary Jerry Conboy for the all-time lead in career

wins at Point Park.

Playing Rager's fast, up-tempo style of play that is focused on high scoring, Point Park has been one of the highest scoring teams in the country during Rager’s tenure. Point Park has been at the top of the NAIA

scoring charts for much of the last decade.

The Pioneers have ranked in the top five of NAIA Division II in scoring in five of the last seven years. That stretch includes leading the country in scoring in back-to-back years in 2005-06 (89.94 ppg) and 2006-07 (92.94 ppg) and again last year in 2011-12 (88.6 ppg). The Pioneers ranked third in the country in 2007-08

(88.29) and they were fifth in 2010-11 (87.8 ppg).

Rager's time at Point Park includes leading the Pioneers to the NAIA national tournament three times and being named American Mideast Conference Coach of the Year two times. Rager's best accomplishment as

head coach at Point Park is a trip to the NAIA Divsion I Final Four in 1996-97. He also led the Pioneers to the NAIA DI Sweet 16 in 2000-01. Point Park was 29-1 to earn the No. 3 overall seed in 2006-07, but was

upset in the first round. Under Rager, Point Park has made the postseason 20 of the past 23 seasons. That includes conference cham-

pionship in 1996-97 and 2006-07. Rager has been named Coach of the Year on two occasions. He was AMC Coach of the Year in 2006-07 and 2004-05.

Rager has the second-most wins of any four-year college basketball coach in the City of Pittsburgh. The all-

time leader in that category is Pitt coach Dr. H.C. ‘Doc’ Carlson, who had a record of 367-248 in 31 years from 1922-53. Next on the list is Duquesne’s Charles ‘Chick’ Davies, who compiled a mark of 314-106 in 21

years from 1925-43 and 1947-48. Conboy now stands fourth with a record of 305-241 in 20 years from 1969-89.

Rager's 323 career wins at Point Park surpassed Conboy, who won 305 games in 20 years from 1969-89. Rager got his record 306th win Jan. 27, 2011 in a 90-80 victory over nationally ranked #18 Malone. In its 45-

year history, Point Park men's basketball has had just four head coaches. Rager and Conboy have combined to coach the last 43 seasons. Rager was an NAIA All-American guard playing for Conboy from 1970-74 and

later was an assistant under Conboy.

The Pioneers won the AMC championship in 2006-07. That year, Point Park earned a trip to the NAIA Division II tournament after winning 29 of their first 30 games. Although Point Park lost in the first round,

it set a record for wins in a season with a final record of 29-2 and scoring average at 92.9 ppg. Also, the Pioneers set a record for consecutive victories by winning 20 games in a row.

Rager has guided the Pioneers to three 20-win seasons, with each of those resulting in a NAIA national tournament appearance. Since 2000, Point Park is averaging 16 wins per season under Rager.

The 2006-07 season marked the second straight AMC North Division title for the Pioneers, and they ended

the season with a No. 3 ranking in the final NAIA Division II poll to set a school record for highest spot in the national ratings.

A native of the Pittsburgh suburb of Munhall, Pa., Rager was Point Park's first All-American, and he is one

of a dozen players who have scored more than 1,000 career points. Rager scored 1,071 career points, and his 367 career assists rank sixth in school history. In his four-year career he averaged 12.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. Rager shot 43 percent from the field.

ASSISTANT COACH GABE BUBON (Point Park ‘00) — 8th year

Gabe Bubon is in his 8th season as an assistant coach for the Point Park men's basketball team. In addition to his men's basketball coaching duties, Bubon is also the head coach of

the Pioneers' men's and women's golf teams. Bubon's primary responsibilities as a men's basketball assistant include creating scouting reports, working with the team's top guards

and top shooters, running individual workouts and tape exchange.

Bubon played basketball at Point Park for one year in 1999-2000. That year he led the American Mideast Conference in scoring at 21.0 points per game, a figure that ranked

10th in NAIA Division I. He shares the Point Park single-game scoring record with 45 points at Shawnee St. on 2-11-00. Bubon made 11 treys in that game, which is also record.

In 2002-03, he averaged 17.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game at Brewton-Parker College, an NAIA member in Mt. Vernon, Ga. That season he was named the Newcomer of the Year in the Southern States Athletic

Conference. His collegiate playing career also includes a stop at Lakeland Community College. Before starting his coaching career, Bubon pursued pro playing opportunities in Europe and the USBL.

Bubon got his start in coaching as a men's basketball student assistant at Point Park from 2003-05 before

becoming an assistant coach in 2005-06. He has been the top assistant the last six years.

2011-12 SEASON RECAP — Overall Record: 13-12, AMC Record 6-6,

The 2011-12 season ended in another playoff appearance for the Point Park Pioneers, their 20th playoff appearance in head coach Bob

Rager’s 23 years at the helm. Point Park lost in the first round of the American Mideast Conference Tournament, 91-76, to Wilberforce to

finish 13-12 overall and 6-6 in the American Mideast Conference. It was a respectable year for the Pioneers, who led the country in scoring

(88.5 ppg) despite having to replace four double-digit scorers who graduated from the season before. With no players on the roster taller

than 6-5, the Point Park still led the country in team rebounding average (43.9 rpg).

Point Park got off to a slow start with a 1-3 record on Nov. 12, 2011. But the Pioneers followed that up with a season-long, five-game win-

ning streak to run their record to 6-3. That stretch included a big upset at Fairmont State, a strong NCAA DII team, 107-100. Point Park

began conference play with a thrilling, 82-81, win at Fisher Dec. 1, 2011 as Robbie Heatherington hit the game-winning shot. But Point

Park went on to lose its next four AMC games, the last of which was an 82-78 home loss to Daemen on Jan. 28, 2012.

After that, the Pioneers played some of their best basketball of the season by winning four of their next five games — all of which came in

conference play — to get back into the playoff race. That streak included road wins at Wilberforce (88-71) and Houghton (83-61). Although

Point Park lost to playoff non-eligible Walsh, it rebounded with home wins over Roberts Wesleyan (94-85) and Fisher (98-86) on consecu-

tive days to run the AMC record above .500 at 6-5. Although Point Park ended the regular season with a loss at playoff No. 1 seed
