The oldest institution in the University of Louisiana System, Northwestern State University has a long tradition of academic excellence in a student-centered environment. Founded in 1884 as the State Normal School, Northwestern was originally dedicated to the education of teachers. Northwestern gradually added programs in nursing, business, liberal arts, the sciences and graduate programs. Today, NSU offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Northwestern has nationally-recognized programs in computer information systems, creative and performing arts, nursing, educational technology and industrial technology. The university has put an emphasis on incorporating technology in the classroom, working to provide students with cutting-edge technol-ogy that is applicable to the workplace. Northwestern is also home to the Louisiana Scholars’ College, the state’s designated honors program in the arts and sciences. The university is also preparing for changes in higher education by aggressively seeking new ways to deliver to courses to students. Northwestern has taken a leadership role in electronic delivery of classes as students are taking classes via the Internet, compressed video or desktop video. Eighteen degree programs are available completely online. Enrollment at Northwestern is more than 9,000 students. The university has more than 70,000 alumni in all 50 states and 12 countries. Students come primarily from Louisiana. Located in Natchitoches, the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, the university and community value history. Part of the university is entered in the National Register of Historic Places. The university is home to the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, a unit of the National Park Service dedicated to promoting and enhancing the preservation and conservation of prehistoric and historic resources in the United States. Northwestern seeks to provide a well-rounded education for its students, allowing them to take part in a variety of extracurricular activities. In charge of athletic media relations at his alma mater since January of 1989, Doug Ireland coordinates publicity efforts for Northwestern’s 14 intercollegiate sports teams through local, regional and national media outlets in print, broadcast, television and the internet. He also serves in the volunteer role of chairman of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Ireland assumed that post in April 1991.His 1992 Demon Football Media Guide won “Best in the Nation” in FCS

Division from the College Sports Information Directors of America. A 1997 story on Joe Delaney, “The Guy We Called Joe D,” won a national second-place award in a COSIDA writing contest. Ireland has won numerous awards as SID from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. He was recently awarded the Distinguished American Award” by the S.M. McNaughton Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Several of his assistant SIDs and graduate assistants have advanced to prominence in media fields. Former NSU sports information staffers under Ireland include Bruce Ludlow, assistant com-missioner of the Southland Conference for media relations; Bill Magrath, media relations manager for the Sports Business Daily; Mike Morrison, co-editor of the ESPN Information Please Almanac; Daucy Crizer, assistant AD and business manager at Lamar; Erik Cox, SID at Lamar; Dart Volz, former SID at Southeastern Louisiana; Melissa Reynaud, former assistant SID at LSU; Kenny Lan-nou, SID at Kansas State; and Troy Mitchell, SID at Henderson State. Dustin Eubanks, NSU’s director of NCAA compliance, worked in the NSU SID office as a graduate assistant and for two years as the fulltime assistant. And Adam Jonson, NSU’s former ticket manager, was a student and graduate assistant in the SID office. In 1981-82, while an undergraduate at Northwestern, Ireland worked as chief of the Shreveport Times Natchitoches Bureau, coordinating news coverage of an eight-parish region along the Red River. From 1982-85, he was assistant SID at Southwestern Louisiana, working with a men’s basketball program that made three straight postseason tourna-ment appearances. He won CoSIDA publications and writing awards while at USL. Ireland was the sports editor of the Natchitoches Times in 1985-86 and attended graduate school at Northeast Louisiana before joining the Alexandria Town Talk sports staff in 1987. In 18 months at the Town Talk, he covered both NSU and LSU sports and won 15 writing awards from the Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association. In 2001, the LSWA presented its prestigious Mac Russo Award to Ireland for his contributions to the organization. In 1999, Ireland was awarded honorary membership in the Graduate N Club at NSU by the university’s group of athletic lettermen for his service to Northwestern and its athletic program, and in 2003 he was given full membership. He was appointed by President Dr. Randall Webb to serve a two-year term on the inaugural University Planning Council in 1997-99. A member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and a student government senator while completing a journalism degree from Northwestern, Ireland was editor of the student news-paper “Current Sauce” as a sophomore before going to work for the Shreveport Times. He was an all-district baseball player and the student body president at Jonesboro-Hodge High School, where he was a wingback for the Tigers’ 1977 Class AA state football finalists coached by Don Shows.

Matthew BonnetteAssociate Sports Information Director Matthew Bonnette is in his ninth season as a member of the NSU sports information staff serving as the associate SID. Bonnette joined the staff in August 2003 after spending a year as sports information director at Henderson State (Ark.) and for former NSU legendary coach Sam Goodwin. Bonnette surpervises all layouts and design work for all media guides and game programs and is the primary media contact for the NSU baseball and women’s basketball teams while overseeing soccer and volley-

ball. He also coordinates statistics for all sports. A 2002 graduate of McNeese State University, Bonnette is no stranger to the SID field as he is the son of longtime McNeese SID Louis Bonnette, who is a member of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame, South-land Conference Hall of Honor, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the McNeese State Athletic Hall of Fame. Matthew’s older brother, Michael, is the sports information director at LSU. While at McNeese, Bonnette served two years as the sports editor of the school’s newspaper. He also worked as both a volunteer and student sports information director while being employed at KPLC-TV as the commercial production manager where he won several advertising awards for his work. He is a member of CoSIDA, Louisiana Sports Writers Association, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and the United States Basketball Writers Association. He has been a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee the last four years and directed the voting for the All-Louisiana Baseball teams. His 2010 football media guide placed second and third in its respective divisions in the LSWA sports information directors contest while his baseball media guide placed second in its division. He has won 11 awards by the LSWA in his career. He is married to the former Colene Lanier of Lake Charles and the couple has two daughters, 11-year-old Haley, who is a sixth grader and a member of the NSU Middle School Dance Line, and 8-year-old Katelyn, who is in the second grade at the NSU Elementary Lab. Colene is the Northwest-ern State men’s basketball and women’s soccer administrative assistant.

Robbie KleinmuntzSID Graduate Assistant/Softball Contact Robbie Kleinmuntz is in his first season as a graduate assistant for the NSU sports information staff. Kleinmuntz is the primary contact for the Lady Demon softball and vol-leyball programs and is also the number two contact for men’s basketball as well as the official statistician for men’s basketball games.. Before coming to NSU, Kleinmuntz graduated from the University of Pittsburgh where he earned bachelor’s degrees in journalism and history. He spent two years as an athletics media relations assistant at Pitt and

gained experience scoring softball, baseball and soccer games. He also contributed in game-day operations for volleyball, and in the press box for nationally ranked football and basketball teams. Some of his daily duties included contributing to media guides, writing press releases, designing game notes and programs, and website maintenance. Prior to his work in media relations, Kleinmuntz wrote for The Pitt News, the school newspaper, as the beat writer for the Pitt women’s basketball and tennis teams. He also interned for the Pitts-burgh Sports Report newspaper, gaining critical experience in the marketing and editorial sections. Kleinmuntz is a native of Highland Park, Illinois. He is a former varsity tennis player at Highland Park High School and is an active master-level chess player. The son of Ira and Leslie Kleinmuntz, he has two younger brothers Michael (20) and Sam (12). He is currently studying towards a master’s degree in sports administration at NSU.

Returning eight starters from a club that qualified for the conference tournament last season, the North-western State softball team gears up to make another big run in the 2012 campaign. The Lady Demons made their first Southland Conference Tour-nament appearance in five years in 2011, and posted their first winning season (32-25, 15-17 SLC) since 2005. NSU returns seven of its eight starting position players from that team, and its top three pitchers. Seniors Kelee Grimes, Samantha Roberts and Tiffany Ward look to lead the team to even greater success this season, as the Lady Demons will eye their first conference champion-ship since 2000. Grimes, from Pineville and Pin-eville HS, led the Southland Confer-

ence and ranked 18th in the NCAA with a with a 1.51 ERA. She also topped the team and ranked fifth in the league with 154 strikeouts. She was named to the 2012 Preseason

All-SLC Second-Team after a 2011 season that was filled with accolades and achievements. Grimes tossed the 11th no-hitter in NSU softball history while earning back-to-back Pitcher of the Week awards. “Kelee is definitely going to have a big presence on the mound this season,” said head coach Donald Pickett. “If she carries over the mo-mentum that she had from last year, she’s going to continue doing a lot of good things.” Also returning in the rotation are juniors Kylie Roos and Brooke Boening. The two combined for a whopping 245 strikeouts in just 232 innings. “We believe that our pitching is as good as anyone’s in our conference. They will continue to lead us and work hard to improve,” Pickett said. Roos also got it done at the plate, smashing a team-high eight homers and hitting for a .289 average. Roberts, a hometown hitter who

grew up in Natchitoches, was the lone Lady Demon to be selected to the 2011 Preseason All-SLC team, at first base. She missed the first 17 games of the year with a concussion, but came back to homer in the final series of the season to lift NSU into the conference tourna-ment. “Sam has been healthy all year and finished really strong for us at the end of last season,” Pickett said. “She’s definitely going to have a big year at the plate and lead us offensively.” Ward, a native of Bulverde, Tex. and Smithson Valley High School, started 46 games at third base for the Lady Demons last season, crushing three doubles and a homer. She posted a .934 fielding percent-age, committing just eight errors at third in 51 appearances. “Ward has been solid for us at third base her entire career,” Pickett said.“It definitely helps to have her around some of the young-er players on the team because of her experi-ence and leadership qualities.” Also returning for NSU is sophomore Cali Burke, a second-baseman from Mesquite, Texas and Dr. John Horn High School, who earned her name on the 2012 Preseason All-SLC First Team. Last season, she hit for a .302 average and 16 RBI, and earned honors on the 2011 All-Louisiana Collegiate Softball Team and the All-SLC Second Team. She also led the team in hits with 51. “We just have a great group of confident kids who are returning and have experience,” Pickett said.

Donald Pickett enters his fourth year at the helm after guid-ing Northwestern State to its first conference tournament ap-pearance in five years. Pickett coached NSU to its first winning season since the 2005 season, and has improved the Lady Demon’s record each year since he arrived. Three of his recruits were voted onto the 2011 All-Louisi-ana Collegiate Softball Team, and two earned Second-Team All-SLC Accolades. NSU started the 2011 conference season strong with a three-game sweep over McNeese State at home to kick things off, and then challenged SLC foes Texas State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the conference tournament. It is safe to say that the head coach is on the right track in terms of building a winning tradition and strengthening the Lady Demon softball program. Though Pickett is not nearly satisfied, he is driven and has big ambitions. He eyes down the Southland Conference championship and a NCAA Tournament berth, while lifting the Northwestern State softball program to national prominence and annual championship-level success. “We want to win the conference and the conference tour-nament. Those are the two main goals that we have this sea-son,” Pickett said. “We have the talent to accomplish it. We just have to continue to work hard, put ourselves in good situ-ations and execute when we need to.” He knows what it takes. He hired assistant coaches who have been there, too. Both on and off the field, the Lady De-mons seek to achieve the highest amount of success. In the classroom, the Lady Demons ranked top-five among both Southland Conference peer and Louisiana institutions in graduation success rates. On the field, their approach first took root in the 2010 sea-son and especially in recruiting, where their efforts resulted in the best turnaround in Division I softball from the year before. The plan is in action. Facility improvements are tangible. A solid approach to coaching, teaching and managing the pro-gram is clear to see. To see where Pickett plans to take NSU, you need only see where he’s already been as an assistant coach. Pickett helped Tennessee-Chattanooga to three NCAA Tournament appearances and the brink of a Women’s Col-lege World Series berth while on the Mocs’ staff. The 34-year-old Pickett begins his 15th season of colle-giate coaching experience. He spent two years helping estab-lish a brand-new program at Memphis after working in a pair of highly successful programs at UT-Chattanooga and Chat-

tanooga State Community College. At Chattanooga State, Pickett was part of a staff that coached the team to three top-five finishes in the junior college softball world series along with three regional and conference championships. He also has coached the Austin (Tenn.) Eagles American Softball Association summer team to four national tournament appearances and two top-five finishes in the ASA nationals. Pickett learned about the Northwestern coaching post from Pat Murphy, the coach of College World Series participant Ala-bama, who was among several nationally-prominent coaches during the summer 2008 search for a new Lady Demons head coach. “Starting with his high level of character and integrity, Don-ald Pickett has an amazing reputation in the collegiate softball world. challenging for Southland Conference titles and NCAA post-season berths,” said NSU director of athletics Greg Burke, announcing Pickett’s hiring. Working for five seasons under coach Frank Reed at UTC, Pickett helped the Mocs advance within one win of the World Series. The Mocs had an overall 210-126 record while pick-ing up three Southern Conference championships before Pickett joined coach Wendy Thees at Memphis following the first year of softball for the Tigers. Also serving as assistant to Reed at Chattanooga State CC for three seasons, Pickett helped post a 151-27 record, including a 62-3 mark in 2001. A year earlier, Pickett was part of the National Fastpitch Coaching Staff of the Year, and in 2002, Pickett was among the Chattanooga State team that was inducted into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame. A 2005 UTC graduate, Pickett is regarded as an excellent recruiter whose expertise coaching hitting and defense is rec-ognized nationally. Coaching and administrative colleagues of Pickett’s were effusive in their praise. “Donald is ready to be a head coach,” said Thees. “His

softball knowledge is incredible and he does a great job of getting to know his players and recruits.” Said Lynn Parkes, the senior woman administrator at Memphis: “Donald Pickett is a man of character and integrity. He loves the game of softball and loves working with young people. I think he will do a fantastic job.” In Pickett’s first season as assistant coach at his alma mater, the 2001 Lady Mocs opened the season with back-to-back no-hitters and knocked off top-25 teams in Ohio State and Baylor, rolling to a 44-15 record while never dropping more than two games in a row. The Lady Mocs posted two upset wins over top-seeded and No. 12 ranked Florida Atlan-tic in the NCAA Regionals. UTC then just missed capturing a berth in the World Series after narrow losses to Georgia Tech and Florida State. “There may not be a better fundamental coach out there,” said UTC’s Reed. “He is a good person, the type of person your family would like to be associated with, and he is per-haps one of the most ‘up and coming’ young coaches out there right now.” A strong reference came from an in-state rival of UTC’s, head coach Torey Acheson a t Tennessee Tech. “At Tennessee-Chattanoo-ga, those players all became better under him......technically, his knowledge base is really good....he is an upstanding hu-man being; he was raised right.” Said Laura Mincy, as-sistant athletic director and SWA at UTC: “Donald is very determined and pas-sionate about college softball. He’s a gem.” That’s what he says - the gem part, anyway -- about his wife, Paige, and their 3-year-old girl, Ainsley Elizabeth, born Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 in Natchitoches.

It’s no secret that pitching has been the strength of the North-western State softball program over the past three years, and pitch-ing coach Caitlin Nies is one of the big reasons why. Three NSU hurlers ranked in the top-ten in 2011 in the South-land Conference in pitching, which guided the Lady Demons to its first SLC Tournament appearance in five years. As a rotation, NSU was the No. 1 rotation in the conference with a 2.09 team ERA and 421 strikeouts under her direction. Nies has coached Lady Demon ace Kelee Grimes over the past three seasons, and has crafted her into an All-Conference and All-Louisiana talent. Under Nies, Grimes tossed the 11th no-hitter in NSU history and won back-to-back Pitcher of the Week accolades. Nies has also helped pitchers Kylie Roos and Brooke Boening improve their statistics each year on the mound, as the two com-bined for a whopping 245 strikeouts in 2011 in just 232 innings. The Sammamish, Wash., native also proved she could get it done as a player, as she was team captain of the 2008 University of Washington softball team and one of the greatest pitchers in the storied history of the Huskies’ program. Nies finished her playing career with the fourth-most strikeouts in UW history (757) in 616.2 innings pitched. Nies ranked 35th on the all-time NCAA Division I strikeouts list with 9.1 strikeouts per seven innings. She fired two no-hitters, getting the first one as a freshman with a 4-0 win over Kansas on Feb. 26, 2005. Her second came in her junior season against another of the nation’s top programs, as Nies threw a no-no against 8th-ranked Texas on March 18, 2007. That was not her most notable career win. That came in her freshman year, when she defeated No. 1-ranked Michigan on May 28, 2005 in the NCAA Super Regionals. That combined with a Pac 10 Conference regular-season triumph over eventual national champion UCLA and made her the only pitcher in the nation at sea-son’s end to have beaten both teams in the national championship

game. Nies was the No. 2 pitcher on Washington’s 2007 team that finished 3rd at the Women’s College World Series, going 11-5 that season. She had at least 11 wins all four years, with a career-high 15 wins and 7 shutouts as a freshman. Nies was a three-time All-Academic Pac 10 selection, earning first-team honors as a senior and second-team recognition as a sophomore and junior. She made the EPSN The Magazine CoSIDA All-District Aca-demic Team and appeared on the Academic All-America ballot in 2007 and 2008. Those seasons, she was also the winner of the Huskies’ Most Inspirational Award. In 2008, she won the presti-gious 101 Club Scholar-Athlete Award at UW. She had 19 career shutouts and an overall 51-31 record with a 2.32 ERA in 130 career appearances, 97 starts. She pitched 54 complete games. Opposing batters hit just .217 against Nies. As a freshman in 2005, she set the school record with 16 strike-outs in a six-inning win over Williamette. Nies became only the third freshman at UW ever to throw a no-hitter in the win over Kansas. Nies played at Eastlake High School. At UW, she graduated with honors in history, posting a 3.46 grade point average. Born May 9, 1986, Nies married Tyler Nies, a Northwestern State police officer, on July 16, 2011. She is the daughter of John and Susan Nies, and has two sisters, Hayley Huson (28) and Lindsay Caranna (31), and a niece, Reese Caranna (4). She received her masters degree in sport administration from NSU in the spring of 2011.

Stacie Pestrak enters her fourth year as an assistant coach for the Lady Demons. She plays a vital role in the Lady Demon’s hit-ting, fielding and baserunning. As a team, NSU posted a .965 fielding percentage in 2011, and swiped 30 bags in 39 attempts. The nine caught stealing number was second-lowest in the conference. Under Pestrak’s direction, the Lady Demon’s legged out nine triples in 2011, second-best in the SLC. They also hit into the fewest amount of double plays (1) of any conference peer. Since her arrival to the softball staff in 2008, NSU has steadily improved its record each year, and qualified for the SLC Tourna-ment last season for the first time since 2006. As a player, Pestrak played all the outfield positions profession-ally, and helped the Florida Gators reach two straight NCAA Tour-naments as an infielder. A 2007 Florida graduate, Pestrak was a junior college All-Amer-ica in 2004 at Santa Fe Community College. She also earned the Florida Community College Athletic Association’s Jean Williams Scholar-Athlete Award and was a two-time Academic All-State se-lection. As a pro player in 2007 with the Philadelphia Force, she was chosen to represent the Force and the National Pro Fast-Pitch league at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game Fan Fest in San Francisco that summer, assisting with a clinic and hosting the league’s fan booth. She began her pro career in the summer of 2006. At Santa Fe, she helped lead her team to a 42-13 record to earn NJCAA second-team and National Fastpitch Coaches Association

third-team All-America honors. She set school career records for steals (92) and runs (92), and set the single-season steals record (52) as a sophomore. She was team captain and won the Leader-ship and Drive Award. In 2003, she was an All-Mid Florida Conference selection as a freshman as she led the state with 9 triples and batted .354 while being chosen as Santa Fe’s rookie of the year. She batted .283 in two seasons for Florida while starting 108 of 126 games, posting 31 career steals in 39 attempts. Pestrak had 71 hits, including 6 doubles, 4 triples and a home run, while driving in 24 runs. She made 19 sacrifice bunts and fielded .941. The Gators went a combined 84-46 and reached the NCAA Tournament in both of her seasons. As a senior, Pestrak hit .315 to lead the Gators and had 12 steals a year after setting a pair of Florida junior class records with 19 steals and 13 sacrifices. She stole 14 straight bases in 2005. A native of Gainesville, Fla., Pestrak made the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2005 and 2006. A two-sport star at Buchholz High School, she was nominated as a McDonald’s All-America bas-ketball player. She helped lead the softball team to the state semi-finals in 2000 and the state finals in 2002, when she was third-team All-State. Pestrak was assistant coach at Santa Fe CC in 2006-07 and was the interim head coach for the Rising Stars Showcase Tour-nament that fall. She has been a camp and clinic instructor since 2004 at Florida, and has also been an assis-tant coach for travel teams in summer competi-tion.

Now in his 23rd season directing the Eugene Christmas Sports Medicine Center at Northwestern State and 30th

year in the profession, Ed Evans has earned the respect of his peers, along with honors from Northwestern State’s athletic letterwinners and the Louisiana governor’s office for his con-tributions to the field of sports medicine and athletic training in general and to Northwestern State in particular. Evans was presented honorary membership in the Gradu-ate N Club, the association of athletic letterwinners at North-western State, during 2005 homecoming ceremonies. Only four other individuals have received such an honor from the N Club, which paid tribute to Evans’ dedicated, unselfish service in four decades (counting his time as a graduate student) to student-athletes at NSU. In 2004, Evans was named the regional “College Athletic Trainer of the Year” by the Southeastern Athletic Trainers As-sociation, which includes members who are in the profession in seven states from Louisiana to Georgia and Kentucky. Evans served six years as president of the Louisiana Ath-letic Trainers’ Association and six more as secretary/treasur-er. He was enshrined in the LATA Hall of Fame in 2000. Evans is a member of the Advisory Committee on Athletic Training to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. He also serves on the Governor’s Council for Physical Fit-ness, appointed early in 2000 by then Gov. Mike Foster. Evans worked as a graduate assistant at Northwestern from 1979-82. He earned his masters degree in physical edu-cation (1980) and completed 30 hours beyond the master’s with an emphasis in guidance and counseling. Evans served four years in the U.S Navy as a hospital corpsman and physical/occupational therapy technician. He spent seven years as athletic trainer at Natchitoches Central High School, working the Louisiana High School Coaches As-sociation’s All-Star games two years, before joining the North-western staff. He and his wife Chris have three sons, Jonathan, David and Tim. An avid cyclist, he generates donations for the train-ing room in an annual spring bike-a-thon.

Jason Drury joined the sports medicine staff at Northwestern State University in the summer of 2005. Drury came to

NSU from Natchitoches Central High School where he was the head athletic trainer for five years. In the spring of 2009, Drury took over as the head football athletic trainer for the Demons, after working for three seasons with the women’s soccer team and one season with men’s basketball team. A 1999 graduate of Idaho State University in biology, Drury worked with numerous sports in Pocatello, Idaho including football, men’s basketball and track and field. Drury earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Northwest-ern State in 2001, during which time he worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the NSU softball team. Drury is a native of Paoli, Indiana. He and his wife, Toni, have been married for eight years. They have two children, Maddox and Kenzie.

David Berkeley-Tuchmayer begins his sixth season on the NSU athletic training staff and fourth as an assistant

trainer. Tuchmayer will handle head training duties for the Lady Demon soccer team and will oversee baseball and softball. He is a certified member of on the National Athletic Train-ers Association and a licensed member of the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. Tuchmayer, a native of Wilmington, N.C., and a 2006 grad-uate of Appalachian State, is the son of Harry Tuchmayer and Kathleen Berkeley. He has one brother, Jeremy. He received his master’s degree in sports administration in the spring of 2008.

A native of Alexandria, Dr. Crenshaw gradu-ated Cum Laude from Centenary in 1999 when receiving his bachelor’s degree and earned his

medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 2004. He worked his residency at Campbell Clinic in Tennessee beginning in 2004 until 2009. He is a member of the American Medical Association, OREF (Ortho-paedic Research and Education Foundation), and AAOS Resident mem-ber. He received the Kellogg Endowment Scholarship in 2002 and Alpha Omega Alpha in 2003. He is married.

Dr. James Knecht has been Northwestern’s team physician since 1984. He finished his pre-med curriculum from LSU in 1975. While at LSU, he was an Academic All-SEC and Academic All-American football player in 1974. He has been in private practice family medi-

cine in Natchitoches since 1982. In addition to being Northwestern’s team physician, he has also been Natchitoches Central’s team physician since 1992. Dr. Knecht is actively involved in many professional organizations, in-cluding the Natchitoches Parish Medical Society, Active Staff Physicians at Natchitoches Parish Hospital, and the Louisiana State Medical Society. He is also a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. His father, Gene, was an assistant football coach at Northwestern and has been active in the Graduate N Club for three decades.

Dr. Leddy received his undergraduate de-gree and Doctorate of Medicine from Boston University. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Louisiana State Univer-

sity Medical Center-New Orleans in 2002. He then completed a sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship with David Fischer, MD at TRIA Or-thopaedics in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he worked on the medical

staff to the Minnesota Vikings, Wild, Twins, and Timberwolves. After fellowship, Dr. Leddy practiced in Kissimmee, Florida with Ortho-paedic Associates of Osceola. There, he cared for many local high school and collegiate athletes. He was head team physician for the Florida Seals Professional Hockey Team and Osceola Ghostriders Professional Indoor Football Team. He was also the lead orthopaedic surgeon for the Capital One Bowl and part of the medical staff for the NBA Combines. In 2007, Dr. Leddy accepted an invitation to return to Louisiana and join Mid-State Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center in Alexandria. He specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopy of the shoulder, knee and hip, and knee and shoulder reconstruction. Dr. Leddy is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. In 2007, he was part of the inaugural class of orthopaedic surgeons to receive a Subspecialty Board Certification in Sports Medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the Louisiana Ortho-paedic Association. A native of Hopewell Junction, New York, Dr. Leddy is married to the forrmer Andrée Braud of Belle Chasse, Louisiana, and they have two chil-dren, Anna Clare and Mary Caitlin. His hobbies include spending time with his family, golf, hunting, and reading.

Dr. Chris Rich completed his undergradu-ate degree at LSU in Baton Rouge, followed by a Doctor of Medicine degree from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He fin-ished his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at LSU in 1988. Dr. Rich is Board Certified by the American

Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, with a successful Recertification with a specialty interest in sports medicine in 2000. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a member of the American Orthopae-dic Society of Sports Medicine, a charter member of the Louisiana Sports Medicine Society, and a board member of the Louisiana Orthopaedic As-sociation. Dr. Rich has been the Head Team Physician for the Northwestern De-mons since 1990. His practice specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopy of the shoulder and knee, and knee reconstruction. During his tenure at NSU, over 500 athletes have sustained an injury that required a surgery, with an incredible rate of return to full sports competition of 99%. A native of San Antonio, Dr. Rich was a three-year letterman in football as an offensive lineman at LSU from 1976-78. He earned Academic All-Southeastern Conference honors in 1977 and 1978. Dr. Rich is the managing partner of Mid State Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center in Alexandria. Mid State, along with Christus St Frances Cabrini Hospital, was designated as #1 in Orthopaedics for the State of Louisiana for 2004 by HEALTHGRADES, “The Healthcare Quality Ex-perts”. He is married to the former Vickie Rainey, and they have three chil-dren, Jeff, Margaret and Stacie. His hobbies include spending time with his family, golf, fishing, and duck hunting.

Record-breaking year for 2002 Lady Demons The 2002 season was a record-breaking year for the Northwestern State Lady Demon softball team as it notched a school-record 45 wins. In addition to the school record for wins, the Lady Demons broke 16 other team and individual school records. Eight Lady Demons players received All-Southland Confer-ence honors, including Player of the Year and Hitter of the Year centerfielder Annie Johnston. Johnston also became an Academic All-American. Leftfielder Nicole Martin was named the league’s Freshman of the Year and was a second team All-SLC selection. Joining Johnston on the first team was sophomore pitcher Crista Miller. Junior pitcher Amanda Orgeto, sophomore third baseman Lindsay Leftwich and Martin were named to the second team while senior first baseman Erin Mancuso and sophomore designated player Kiana Scott were named to the third team. Senior second baseman Jana Strickland earned honorable mention honors.

Austin and a four-RBI effort in the 10-2 blowout win over Southwestern Missouri State….. in the SEMO win, Ashlee awakened the Northwestern State offense with a grand slam in the third inning, high-lighting a seven-run inning Sunday that closed out the Lady Demon win…. Ashlee nearly flawless in the outfield with just one error in 59 plays and a .984 fielding percentage.

2010 Season: Ashlee gave a stellar performance against Texas-Arlington where she accounted for two of five Lady Demon hits, including the game-winner….she continued to show her offensive skills against Southern where she went 2 for 3…hammered 10 multi-hit games for the season…. played and started in every game during her freshman campaign… finished the season with solid numbers including .271 batting (10 doubles), .396 slug-ging, .333 on-base percentage and 18 RBIs…committed only two errors in the field while earning a .973 fielding percentage.

Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Struck out 10 in a four-hit pitching performance at UCA, giving the Lady Demons to the 3-2 victory…. fired 11 strikeouts and held Nicholls to two runs to help NSU mount an epic 5-2 comeback victory, where the Lady Demons mustered a five-run final frame, and earned her an honorable mention in the May 5th SLC Pitcher of the Week selection….in the season finale opener vs. Texas State, she carried a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings and finished the 1-0 win with her second one-hitter of the season, her fourth shutout and her eighth complete game with eight strikeouts and two walks, lifting NSU to its first postseason ap-pearance in five years….capped her junior season with a 11-8 record and ranked as the league’s best pitcher after throwing 125.1 innings with 154 strikeouts, .196 opponent batting average (third in the SLC), and the 18th nationally-ranked earned run average of 1.40 ….her stats helped NSU to become the No. 1 rotation in the conference with a 2.09 team earned run average and 421 strikeouts.

2010 Season: ESPN the Magazine/Cosida Academic All-District team... Capital One Bank SLC All-Aca-demic First-team... completed season with a 3.36 earned run average in 29 appearances….recorded 92 strikeouts and only allowed 66 hits in 89 innings pitched… hurled five complete-games this year, including an 11-inning duel against Texas-Arlington in which she tossed all 11 innings, giving up just four hits and one run….struck out 12 batters against Sam Houston in a complete-game, establishing a new career-high….ranked among the league’s elite pitchers in hits allowed and opposing batting average (.231).

2009 Season: Recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts against McNeese State Feb. 24... struck out at least five batters eight times in her freshman campaign...allowed season-low two hits four times last season.

102011 Season: The lone Lady Demon to be selected to the 2011 All-Southland Conference Preseason team….Missed the first 17 games of the season with a concussion, only to return to the lineup in early March to go 2-for-4 with an RBI single against Texas-San Antonio…. went 2-for-3 with an RBI to help lead Northwestern State over Central Arkansas, 3-2…. Roberts shined with the game-tying RBI single as NSU took a 5-2 win over Nicholls State ….her lone two-out, sixth-inning home run in the season finale vs. Texas State gave NSU the lift needed to earn its first postseason appearance in five years...collected a total .261 BA in 40 games and 115 at-bats....had eight multi-hit games including a perfect 3-for-3 outing against Texas-Arlington.

2010 Season: All-Southland Conference Third Team selection... Academic All-SLC First Team... continued her dominance at the plate, finishing her sophomore campaign leading the team in numerous batting categories, including average (.333), home runs (5), RBI (35), slugging (.496), total bases (70) and a 10 game hitting streak…. knocked in a career-high five runs with a 2-for-3 performance at McNeese and recorded 10 multi-RBI games….opened the season with at least one hit in each of the first 10 games, which extended her career-long streak to 15 games, dating back to the previous season…com-mitted just one error in the field with 145 putouts…selected to the All-SLC third-team and All-Louisiana collegiate softball first team.

2009 Season: In a two-game series at Grambling, went 5 for 7 with four RBI and two doubles, while also scoring three runs... knocked in two RBI in six different contests... hit home runs against Stephen F. Austin in a 2 for 3 performance and UTSA while driving in two runs... Led the Lady Demons in home runs (2), RBIs (21), slugging percentage (.351), on-base percentage (.325), doubles (11) and total bases (46).

At Ruston HS: All-State Class 5A twice, as a sophomore at Natchitoches Central and as a senior at Ruston .. a four-year first-team All-District 2-5A selection … in her only season at Ruston, she made the coaches’ association state all-star games roster while earning All-Area from the Shreveport Times and making first-team All-District and All-State … as a junior at NCHS, she was honorable mention All-State, made the All-Area Team, the All-Cenla team chosen by the Alexandria Town Talk … she was All-Cenla as a sophomore when the Lady Chiefs reached the state quarterfinals … as a senior, she helped Ruston reach the state quarterfinals … played for her parents … posted a 3.75 grade point aver-age.

At the plate, Kylie hammered away to earn a team-leading .298 batting average, .507 slugging, eight home runs (seventh in the SLC), and 37 RBI (fifth, SLC)….notched ten multi-hit with two 3-hitters and multi-RBI games, including two 3-RBI efforts and two 4-RBI games… At the Sleep Inn Classic softball tournament, Roos dominated over Centenary in the 13-2 triumph, as she went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI, including a three-run homer…..At the Frost Classic softball tournament, Kylie ham-mered out two home runs in the first day of the weekend tourney versus Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and East Tennessee State University, to help the Lady Demons to the first-day sweep….Roos slammed a walk-off single to cap a 2-for-4, two-RBI performance at the plate and lead Northwestern State to a 3-2 victory over Southeastern Louisiana….Against Central Arkansas, Roos delivered the game-winning RBI single in the top of the seventh to lift NSU over the Sugar Bears, 3-2….appeared in 54 games.

2010 Season: Kylie proved to be a great addition to the pitching rotation as she collected 13 wins and struck out 117 batters in 129 innings in the circle…in her last game of the season, struck out seven batters and allowed just one run against Texas-San Antonio…fanned five batters and allowed six hits at Texas State, one of the top teams in the conference…she picked up SLC Pitcher of the Week honors (Feb. 23) after her performance in the South Alabama Invitational against Alabama-Birmingham and Belmont, pitching 17 innings producing two complete games and a shutout while walking just three batters and striking out 19…wrapped up her freshman campaign with nine com-plete games and a 3.26 earned run average, the lowest on the team… she even contributed to the Lady Demon offense with 67 plate appearances where she earned a .209 batting average including three doubles and one home run.

Dr. Randall J. WebbNorthwestern State President Dr. Randall J. Webb stated when he became Northwestern State Uni-versity’s 17th president in July of 1996 that his primary objective would be to help make his Alma Mater the best institution it could be. It is apparent after 15 years that Webb is achieving that admirable goal. Enrollment has reached record levels during Webb’s tenure as presi-dent and exceeded 10,500 for the first time in history in the fall of 2004. Webb has also been at the forefront in recent years of moving the uni-versity toward higher admission standards, which has resulted in some enrollment declines but in the enrollment of students with greater aca-demic potential and aptitude.

Retention has increased at the university, the average ACT score of students has gone up, and high school student leaders are enrolling in Northwestern in record numbers. There has been a substantial increase in the number of high school valedictorians and salutatorians among first-time freshmen at the university. External funding for NSU has also increased dramatically under Webb’s leadership. In the first capital campaign in its history, the university received $32.7 million to far exceed its goal of $18.84 million. That funding included the establishment of numerous endowed chairs and professorships to enhance academic programs at the university. In addition to the private funding, Northwestern has received more grant monies in recent years from state and federal agencies and private foundations than at any time since its founding in 1884. Webb has also expanded the university’s outreach by spearheading the development at NSU of the largest electronic education and distance learning network of any university in Louisiana. NSU offers courses and degree programs to students across the nation and world through Internet and compressed video. Millions of dollars have been obtained during Webb’s presidency for new and renovated facilities. A new $6.9 million Wellness, Recreation and Activity Center opened on the campus in 2005; and Morrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building, and Williamson Hall have been com-pletely renovated and restored. A new Student Services Center on the site of the former West Caspari Hall will be complete early next year. Over $32 million in construction by a private company has added two modified residence halls to the campus in recent years. Funding has also been obtained to rebuild the East Caspari Hall and replace the underground electrical distribution system. Northwestern academic programs and athletic teams continue to receive positive national recognition. The Computer Information Systems pro-gram, for example, won five consecutive national championships in academic competition in systems analysis, and the NSU men’s basketball team defeated Iowa in the NCAA national championship tournament. A former center on the Northwestern football team, Webb is an avid supporter of the university’s athletic programs and has held positions of leadership at the national level in intercollegiate athletics. He has served as chair of the board of directors of the Southland Conference and has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Executive Council and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors that oversee all major policy decisions by the governing body for major college sports. He currently serves as the Southland Conference representative on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business education, Webb earned a master of science degree in mathematics from NSU in 1966. He received a doctorate in education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1971 with a concentration in mathematics and research. Webb was a member of the faculty of Longwood College in Farmville, Va, from 1966 until 1974. He served as Director of Higher Education and Teacher Certifica-tion in the Louisiana Department of Education from 1974 through 1976. He moved to Southeastern Louisiana University in 1976 and in 13 years there held positions as director of institutional research, EEO officer, registrar and member of the mathemat-ics faculty. He became Dean of Instruction and Graduate Studies and professor of mathemat-ics at Northwestern in 1989. In that position, he was responsible for campus-wide policy development, planning, advancement, and review of both graduate and under-graduate programs. While Webb was in that position, graduate enrollment increased by 35 percent, and internal funding for faculty research increased by 200 percent. As dean, Webb proposed the concept for NSU’s successful Freshman Connection Program and served as a member of the writing team for a grant proposal that resulted in a five year, $1.7 million Title III grant to improve student retention. He also chaired the steering committee for NSU’s Self Study for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He has been active in the community as a member of the board of directors of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Association for the Pres-ervation of Historic Natchitoches, the Natchitoches Historic Foundation, the Natchi-toches-Northwestern Symphony Society, Rotary Club, and the First Baptist Church. Webb and his wife Brenda have two daughters, both honor graduates of Northwest-ern. Tamara and her husband, former NSU All-America baseball pitcher Reggie Gate-wood, live in McKinney, Texas, withtheir children Tyler and Ava. Jerry PierceVice President • External Affairs Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the Northwestern State athletic program. Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, field-ing his position with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball out of the park from time to time but always taking an understated profile, seeing himself as a role player. Beginning his 47th year on the university’s staff, Pierce’s impact on NSU and the city of Natchitoches can’t be mea-sured as easily as Ripkin’s Baseball Hall of Fame statistics, but they are equally indelible.

He begins his 21st year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. A sig-nificant aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce works closely with athletic director Greg Burke and all NSU coaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics competing at a championship level week after week, month after month and year after year. Pierce is an avid tennis player who has been a member of USTA teams that have won more than a dozen state championships, five regional titles and one national championship. Well before moving into the executive position, Pierce had already served his alma ma-ter, adopted hometown and state with distinction. In his role as vice president, he oversees

university operations in athletics, alumni and development, public and media relations and assists President Dr. Randall J. Webb in governmental affairs activities. Many of those duties were his since the 1970s as he worked under four previous pres-idents as Northwestern advanced from NAIA to NCAA College Division to NCAA Division I athletic status in 1977. A 1961 graduate of Northwestern, Pierce served as trainer for the Demon football team during his college years, work-ing closely with legendary coach Jack Clayton. After earning his journalism degree, Pierce went to work for the New Or-leans Times Picayune, serving as a reporter and editor. He was named executive sports editor at the age of 24. In 1965, he chose to raise his two sons in Natchitoches and returned to NSU as sports information director. He was pro-moted to news bureau director two years later and assumed additional responsibilities in athletics, alumni affairs and other areas through the years. He founded, in 1972, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame facil-ity in Prather Coliseum on the NSU campus, providing a home for an entity created in 1958. He established annual induction activities that remain in place nearly four decades later, and served as director of the Hall for 19 years until his promotion to vice president forced him to step aside from the volunteer post. He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences (Trans America, 1979; Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA Division I status in 1977. He is a past president of the Southland and has served the conference through other offices and committee positions. In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana’s 20 most influential sports figures by the Times-Picayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, LSU athletic director Joe Dean and basketball coach Dale Brown, and Grambling foot-ball coaching legend Eddie Robinson.

His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-Star Pro-ductions to film the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dylan McDermott in Natchitoches and on the NSU campus. The movie’s impact on tourism in Natchitoches continues to resonate more than two de-cades later. Pierce is regarded as one of the most effective legislative liaisons for Louisiana’s higher education system. He is also a popular after dinner speaker and master of ceremonies who has spoken at hundreds of events since 1965. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Pierce is a member of the Journalism Department faculty. He is the author of one book and editor of two others and has written thousands of editorials, columns, features and other articles for newspapers and maga-zines. Pierce and his wife Regina, a teacher, live on Cane River Lake in Natchitoches. He has two sons, Randy and Rick, both NSU graduates; and three grandchildren, twins Evan and Amanda, 22, and Miranda, 11, and two stepchildren, Nicholas and Natalie.

In the midst of his 16th year as director of athletics at Northwestern State, Greg Burke has received national acclaim for the job he’s done in his adopted home-town.

Burke has been athletics director at Northwestern since Aug. 29, 1996, when his first day included speaking at the annual NSU/Independence Bowl Kickoff Luncheon. Burke is the longest serving AD at any Louisiana institution. He has steered NSU athletics to many of its greatest accomplishments while overseeing a program that has fielded championship caliber teams in nearly all of the school’s NCAA Division I sports. Last year, he was included among 29 winners of the Under Amour AD of the Year Award presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He was also among four winners chosen to be involved in a Street and Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal panel discussion on current Division I athletics issues. Joining NSU’s Burke were Purdue’s Morgan Burke (no relation), Samford’s Bob Roller and Lee Fowler of North Carolina State, with the transcript of their discussion distributed to national media by the Sports Business Daily. Burke just completed a term as the 2010-11 president of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association. Burke’s 15 years as athletic director include 32 Southland Conference regular-season or tournament championships, 54 All-American and Academic All-American student athletes, and three U.S. Olympic competitors. Seventeen NSU teams have taken part in NCAA or WNIT postseason competition. Under his guidance, Northwestern State has led all 13 public institutions in Louisiana, and all 12 Southland Conference institutions, in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate reports. The school’s athletic facilities have undergone nearly $7 million in improvements in the past four years. NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains the only) Southland Conference member in the league’s five decades of history to sweep football, men’s basketball and baseball championships in the same athletic year. It’s been done only once in Southeastern Conference history, by Alabama in 1933-34, and only four times in Big Ten Conference history, the last time by Michigan State in 1979-80. Those accomplishments have come with one of the more modest athletic budgets in the state and conference. Burke’s management skill and fundraising ability have been pivotal. Burke generated a $2 million series of sponsorships for new scoreboards installed for 2008-09 at all NSU athletic venues and spearheaded the $700,000 Second Century Circle fencing project for athletic venues. Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, including several whose success at Northwestern State has propelled them to national prominence in subsequent positions. Some of his best hires remain on staff at NSU. Two, basketball’s Mike McConathy and soccer’s Jimmy Mitchell, guided Northwestern in NCAA Tournament play in their second seasons and have been back to postseason since. NSU’s 2006 basketball team scored one of the most memorable upsets in the history of March Madness, coming from 17 down to stun No. 15-ranked Iowa 64-63. Burke has selected head coaches who have subsequently been hired by Alabama, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi State and Wichita State. From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of having a balanced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitive strides have been made in women’s athletics under his guidance. The NSU soccer program was the first one in Louisiana ever to reach the NCAA Tournament and remains the only one with multiple appearances. Volleyball set attendance records and has made its best-ever showings in conference play in recent years. In softball, NSU posted the nation’s most improved win total in 2010 regular-season play under second-year coach Donald Pickett, and moved among league contenders in 2011. The Lady Demons joined Stanford as the only women’s tennis programs in the country in 2010 with only one regular-season loss, while sweeping Southland regular-season and tournament titles and making a first-ever NCAA Team Tournament appearance. While on-field success by Demon and Lady Demon teams has been a source of pride for NSU supporters, Burke is equally proud of the tone which has been set within the NSU athletic program as it relates to academic achievement and community service. The academic accomplishments are reflected annually in the NCAA’s APR and GSR studies. Community service by NSU student-athletes, coaches and staff more than doubled to over 5,000 hours in 2009-10 and remained at that level in 2010-11. Burke spearheaded the adoption of the slogan “Great Tradition, Brighter Future” for NSU Ath-letics, and the creation of NSU Athletics “Cornerstones” for student-athletes: “Academic Achieve-ment, Personal Responsibility, Competitive Success … Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Day!” In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America Football Foundation’s Gen. Rob-ert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award and that same year, was also tabbed as one of two Natchitoches Parish Cenla Newsmakers of 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper’s editorial staff. He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from his alma mater, Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, recognizing his community service and professional achievements. Burke became one of only 21 alumni honored since the award was instituted in 1982. In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelist at the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors convention in New Orleans, addressing members of the College Athletic Business Managers of America and also participating in a panel discussion of “Fundraising from an Athletic Director’s Perspective” speaking to the National Association of Athletic Development Directors. Since 2007, Burke has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Championships/Sports Man-agement Cabinet, a 49-person panel which makes recommendations to the NCAA Board of Direc-tors on key issues facing Division I athletics. He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002) and concurrently served a term on the eight-member NCAA FCS Committee that administers the national playoffs. Since his committee term expired, Burke has served as a site su-pervisor for Football Championship Subdivision playoff games across the nation and he is regarded as one of the country’s premiere advocates of FCS football. In 2004, NSU received the highest possible rating, “fully certified,” from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, affirming that Northwestern operates its athletic program in substantial conformity with operating principles ad-opted by the NCAA Division I membership. Burke is a past president of the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club and remains active in that civic group. He has also been part of the steering committee for the Natchitoches Christmas Festival and is a former president of the Natchitoches Area Jaycees. He is involved with the American Heart As-sociation and was 2010 March of Dimes chairman locally. He and his wife, Susu, is a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and an elementary teacher. Their 17-year-old daughter, Catherine, is captain of the St. Mary’s High School cheerleading squad, in addition to being a point guard on the basketball team and a member of the tennis team.

Kyle Barnard has been named the interim athletic ticket manager and is also assistingwith development. His duties include working with event management, external af-fairs, and alumni relations aside from his ticket manager needs. His career plans are to become an associate athletic director.

His first year at Northwestern State served as a graduate assistant for the department. While working with game day operations and marketing/promotions, he served on the diver-sity council for NSU during the NCAA recertification process. Kyle organized a NCAA diversity workshop for both coaches and players. Barnard received his undergraduate degree in kinesiology and fitness from Ouachita Bap-tist University. He was a 4 year letterman and a 3 year starter on the offensive line for the OBU football team. As a captain his junior and senior year, the team had their highest ranking in school history. He served as member and president of OBU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Com-mittee. While attending OBU, Kyle reached the dean’s list and was a member of IFC (Inter Fraternal Council) and also was a member of Rho Sigma men’s social club. His hometown is The Woodlands, Texas. In high school, he was named to the all-district and all-county teams at The Woodlands High School. Kyle also earned a power lifting letter. The son of Ron and Brenda Barnard, he was born Nov. 13, 1987, in Corpus Christi, Texas and

has one brother, Conall. He is currently married to Brittany Barnard, a pediatric RN at Cabrini Hospital.

Faculty Athletic Representative Jody Biscoe is Associate Professor

of Psychology and Addiction Studies at Northwestern State, where he is the coordinator for the undergraduate Addiction Studies, and Substance Abuse/Prevention concentrations. Since 2006, he has served as Faculty Athletic Representative for NSU. This role includes the chair of the NSU Athletic Council. Since 2006, Northwestern State University has made numerous paradigm shifts in how it addresses the needs of student-athletes; however, one thing has been consistent in that its student-athletes are winners on the field and in the classroom. All have heard about higher educational institutions being penalized by the NCAA for academic improprieties. NSU has attempted to be a model program of “Doing Things the Right Way,” by following the Athletic Department motto: Great Tradition – Brighter Futures. This past year, NSU was one of only four schools in the State of Louisiana that did not receive any penalties for low NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) with baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, women’s indoor & outdoor track, and volleyball rating in the top three in the Southland Conference. Among the 40 Northwest-ern State student-athletes and athletic staff members who graduated in spring 2010, 10 of the 20 receiving undergraduate degrees graduated either cum laude or magna cum laude. Gradu-ation rates of student-athletes in soccer, volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball and football ranked in the top four of the Conference. These accomplishments could not have been achieved without the support and efforts of the student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administration. Also, Jody is the Director for the Louisiana Addiction Technology Transfer Center at NSU. He has served on the National Addiction Technology Transfer Center’s (ATTC) - Practice and National Leadership Institute Committee. In addition, he has coordinated five nationally recog-nized leadership institutes for Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico and a member of the National ATTC Leadership Directors Committee. Recently, he was appointed to the NAADAC - National Addiction Studies & Standards Collaborative Committee. This past year, Jody was selected to serve on the United States Health and Human Services – Substance Abuse & Mental Health Service Administration Expert Panel concerning workforce issues. Jody’s married to his wife, Veronica (Roni), an avid runner, and daughter Roxy is a senior co-captain on the varsity cheerleading squad and Lady Tiger basketball team at St. Mary’s School. All are devoted Demon fans!

Cary Bruno is the Assistant Academic Coordinator with over-sight of the following sports: Freshman Football, softball, volleyball, men’s track and cross country, women’s track and cross country, and women’s basketball. Cary is also the Director of the Enhanced Aca-

demic Program, a program that mentors academically underprepared student-athletes. Bruno also assists Carrie Crowell with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, which is designed to assist with the transition phase of college to work . Bruno was a member of the Demon Softball team from 2005-2009. During her time at Northwestern State, her most memorable honors include the esteemed Southland Conference Steve McCarty Citizenship Award as well as being selected as the Southland Conference Softball Student Athlete of the Year in 2008. Bruno graduated from NSU in May 2009 with a B.S. in Business Administration. She is currently earning her Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services with a concentration in Student Affairs Administration.

Carrie Crowell, a two-year Academic All-Southland Confer-ence soccer standout for Northwestern State in 2005-06, from Arling-ton, TX, now serves as an academic coordinator in the Johnnie Em-mons Athletic Study Center at NSU as well as being the Senior Woman

Crowell served as an intern in the Academic Services and CHAMPS/Life Skills program in January 2009, while also completing her second season as a graduate assistant soccer coach and finishing work on her master’s of science in sport administration. She was a magna cum laude graduate of NSU in August 2007 in business administration, and also was a key contributor on the Lady Demons’ 2005 NCAA Tournament team that won the Southland Conference Tournament. Crowell is the academic coordinator for the sports of soccer, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s track, volleyball, and veteran football. She also heads the Enhanced Academic Program which provides additional help for student-athletes and aids in maintaining a healthy and successful balance between academics and athletics. Crowell served an internship in the summer of 2008 with the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, helping stage events supporting a Nationwide Tour golf tournament co-sponsored by the Hall. She also assisted in daily operations of the museum in Springfield, Mo., and helped stage the Missouri High School Basketball All-Stars Game. Crowell was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta honors society from 2005-2007, graduating in three years with a 3.74 grade point average. She made the SLC Commissioners’ Academic Honor Roll in the last three seasons she competed for NSU, capped by a 2006 season in which her defense helped the Lady Demons set a school record for least goals allowed per game. Crowell graduated with her Masters of Science in Sport Administration with a 4.0 GPA in May 2009.

Dustin Eubanks is in his 13th year in the NSU athletic de-partment and his 12th year at the helm of the compliance duties, keeping all athletic personnel current and in accordance with NCAA and Southland Conference guidelines. A 1996 education graduate of Northwestern, the 38-year-old avid

fan of all teams that hail from Pittsburgh seized an opportunity to serve as a graduate as-sistant in the sports information department at Northwestern while beginning the pursuit of his master’s degree in health and physical education (concentration in sports administration), which he obtained in May of 2003, and was impressive enough to earn a promotion to full-time status in November 1998. Eubanks is married to the former Dawn Hornsby of Branch and the couple has two daugh-ters, Emilie (16) and Taylor Nicole (5). The sisters share the same birthdate. Dustin and Dawn, who is the Associate Director of Financial Aid at NSU, will celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary this summer. Roxanne Freeman began working at NSU in 1983 as an

accounting clerk in business affairs. She transferred to the athletic department as football/baseball/track secretary and served under Sam Goodwin, Leon Johnson and several baseball coaches for eight seasons before graduating with a B.S. in accounting in May 1995.

Freeman then became the compliance coordinator and academic advisor during a three-year span before leaving in 1998. She returned to NSU in the Fall of 2000 in her current position as Business Manager where she now serves as liaison between the athletic department and business affairs. She has one son, Aaron Pizani, who is also an NSU alum. Todd Garzarelli was named as the Associate Athletic Director

for External Affairs in October 2011 after a successful three-year stint at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and will oversee all external areas at Northwestern State, including the NSU Athletic As-sociation.

Garzarelli came to Northwestern State from SIUE where he immediately made an impact on the SIUE Athletics Department in helping but the external unit from the ground up. During his short tenure, he signed the school’s first-ever apparel contract, helped launch a newly designed website, and worked to enhance the radio network that included online streaming for the first time. He also established a corporate sponsorship platform and a compreshensive annual fund and put together a major gift program and portfolio to enhance a $50 million capital campaign. Prior to SIUE, Garzarelli was at Northern Illinois University, where he served most recently as the Associate Athletic Director for Marketing, Corporate and Broadcast Relations. During his tenure at NIU, revenue in corporate sponsorship, tickets, licensing, hospitality and media trade all increased dramatically. Garzarelli also successfully negotiated and landed multi-year agreements with Chicago Sports Leader in radio WSCR 670 AM “The Score” and Comcast Sport-net Chicago which gave Huskie Athletics inmeasureable exposure in radio and television. In all, the Huskie football team played in more than 40 regional or national television broadcasts during his tenure. Garzarelli also established the first NIU All-Access platform on internet that streamed over 100 audio and video events annually. Before his time at NIU, Garzarelli previously worked as the Director of Marketing and Pro-motions at the United States Military Academy (Army) from 2001 to 2004. He also served as marketing associate at the University of Missouri during the 2000-2001 season. He spent one season at the Air Force Academy as a Marketing and Development Assistant and one season as an Assistant to the Director of External Affairs at Saint Francis (Penn.). At Army, he helped maintain an 18-station radio network that covered most of the U.S. market and assisted in a regional television agreement for Army football. He also played an instrumental part in landing Jeep as the Title Sponsor of the annual Army/Navy Football game. Army Athletics increased corporate sponsorships, tickets and overall attendance under Garzarelli’s watch.

Garzarelli received a sport management degree from Slippery Rock University in 1998. He also earned a master’s in sport management from Northern Illinois in 2006. Garzarelli and his wife, Leah, have a five-year old daughter, Goia, and a two-year old son, Gabe.

After a brief hiatus from college athletics, Clay Shaw returns to the profession as the new assistant for sport marketing and promo-tions at Northwestern State. An Ohio native, the 2003 graduate of the University of Toledo earned his bachelor’s degree in graphic design with coursework in business and marketing.

He enrolled at Bowling Green University in 2006 to work towards a career in sports mar-keting and was a volunteer intern. He followed that with a marketing assistant internship at the University of New Mexico and the University of Tulsa. He landed his first full-time job in college athletics as the promotions coordinator at Cali-fornia State University-Bakersfield. Shaw stepped away from college athletics to work in professional sports as a ticket repre-sentative for the Fresno Grizzlies Triple-A baseball team, and the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. Prior to joining NSU, Shaw spent two years with Bisk Education as a representative of Villanova University Online.

Rocky Smith is in his first year as the Director of Athletic Facilities and Game Operations at NSU. Smith began his career as a student worker under Alan Pasch and progressed his way from student worker to graduate assistant to then assistant director. He has served as game manager for the majority of sports for NSU along with special event management for the university.

A native of Bedford, Texas and a graduate of Trinity High School, Smith earned his bach-elor’s degree in general studies from NSU and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sports administration. At Trinity, he participated in gymnastics state and national competitions in rings, pommel horse, and parallel bars. In college, he was a part of the Spirit of Northwestern marching band as a bass trombonist and a four year rower. Smith is in his third year of being an assistant coach for the rowing team specializing in sculling. Born March 9th of 1986, he is the son of David and Robbie Smith and brother of younger sister Delayne Smith.

Scott Smith is no stranger to Northwestern State athletics. He has spent the last two years with the Lady Demon tennis pro-gram while working on a master’s degree. He joined the staff as an assistant coach and brought experience to the tennis program as a teaching pro and a head college coach. From 2002-2004, Smith was a tennis teaching professional at the

Raveneaux Country Club in Spring, Texas, as well as the Woodlands Country Club in Houston. The next two years he was the assistant coach at the University of the Ozarks from 2004-2006 and became the head coach at Ozarks from 2006-2008. He has been a tennis teaching professional at the Westside Tennis and Fitness Club in Houston since 2008 before joining Coach Patric Dubois on the NSU coaching staff in August 2009. Smith received his B.S. degree in business administration in 2007 from the University of the Ozarks. He received his associate’s degree in recreational leadership – Tennis Teaching from Tyler (Texas) Junior College in 2002. He is currently working on his master’s degree in sport administration here at Northwest-ern State.

Ginger Craig was a standout at the plate at North-western State, playing from 1985-88. While playing, she set 10 career hitting records, one of which still re-mains (triples-18). She also holds individual season re-cords for batting average (.428) and slugging percentage (.783). She was the first Louisiana Athletic Director’s Association Player of the Year and was the Gulf Star Conference Most Valuable Player in 1987. She also played two seasons (1984-86) for the Lady Demon basketball team.

Rhonda Rube remains the most highly decorated player in Northwestern State softball history. She is the only player to ever earn All-American honors, third team (1991). She set four career hitting records in-cluding hits, doubles, batting average, and walks, one of which still stands (walks-95). She was a three-time Louisiana Athletic Director’s Association Player of the Year and a four-time All-Southland Conference pick, three first team selections and one second team.
