After finishing a disappointing fifth in last season’s Sum-mit League Champi-onships, the UMKC women’s golf team will look to move up the standings with three of the pro-gram’s best golfers in history returning along with four in-coming freshman who came out hot during the fall sea-son.

THE RETURNERSSenior Madison Mad-dox returns to the ‘Roos four her fourth and final season as a Kangaroo, post-ing some impressive numbers along the way. During her three and half year career, Maddox has regis-tered the sixth lowest career scoring aver-age, including two of the top-20 single season marks, been a part of all 11 of the top-10 lowest single rounds and 54-hole tournament scores and recorded one of the lowest rounds in

school history.

Junior Taylor Fisher enters her third season in the Blue & Gold as the most accomplished golfer in school history. Currently, her 77.76 career scoring aver-age is the lowest in school history, while her season scor-ing averages rank first, second and eighth all-time at UMKC. Her round of 69, meanwhile, is the second low-est round in school history and her four rounds of 72 are tied for sixth, while her 54-hole scores rank first, third, fifth and three times tied for seventh in the UMKC annals.

Sophomore Emily Isaacson returns for her second season at UMKC after finish-ing with an average of 83.36 a season ago. In her first sea-son with the ‘Roos, the Topeka, Kan., native has placed

herself seventh on the career scoring list (81.65) and fifth on the single season list (78.00).

THE FRESHMANSusan Kirschenman joins the squad out of Huxley, Iowa, and has posted an aver-age of 78.44 over nine rounds this fall, which would rank as the seventh lowest single season aver-age in school history and the second low-est career average.

Kailee Kuehn, the second UMKC fresh-man, should have a familiar name to ‘Roo fans, as her brother Korbin plays for the men’s squad and is one of the top golfer’s in The Sum-mit League. In the fall, the Overland Park, Kan., native is averaging an 83.33 over nine rounds.

After the fall season, Flower Mound, Texas, native Rachel Mulkey has posted the most

impressive numbers of any of the four freshmen, averag-ing a 77.33 over her 12 rounds. Her 72 at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invita-tional is tied for the sixth lowest round in school history, while her three round score of 226 in the same event is tied for fifth.

The fourth and final UMKC freshman is Fayetteville, Ark., native Micah Ra-dler. During the fall, Radler has shot an average round of 78.33, while notching a top-10 finish with her 230 at the MSU/Payne Stewart Me-morial.

THE FALL SEASONDuring the fall of 2011, the current UMKC women’s golf team posted a successful cam-paign with one of its deepest and most talented teams in the programs his-tory. Over the course of two months and

four tournaments, the ‘Roos shot four each of the 10 lowest rounds, 54-hole tour-nament scores and individual 54-hole tournament scores in school history.

On Sep. 11-12, the squad opened at the Golfweek Program Championship with an 11th place finish before a sixth place result at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower In-vitational in Manhat-tan, Kan.

Next the ‘Roos ven-tured to Columbia, Mo., for the Johnie Imes Invitational, finishing 13th with a 926. UMKC then closed out its fall season with its best showing yet, a run-ner-up finish at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial.

THE SPRING SCHEDULEThis spring, the Kangaroos will travel all over the country for five tournaments, including the 2012 Summit League Championships.

The ‘Roos open the 2012 season on Feb. 27-28 in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the 2012 Islander Clas-sic for the fourth straight year after finishing 11th last season. In the tour-nament, hosted by Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, UMKC has finished 14th, eighth and 11th.

From there, the ‘Roos will make their third straight appearance in the Jackrabbit Invitational, featur-ing eight Summit League schools, on Mar. 12-13. At the Primm Valley Golf Club, the site of the Summit League Championships, the Kangaroos have had some of their best success, posting four of the 10 low-est rounds in school history and the two lowest 54-hole tour-nament scores.

Following a week off, UMKC will head south for its an-nual trip to the UALR Golf Classic in Hot

Springs, Ark., on Mar. 26-27. The trip to Hot Springs will also serve as a home-coming for a pair of ‘Roos, as Fisher and Radler both call Arkansas home.

On Apr. 14-15, UMKC closes out the 2012 regular season when it travels east to Indiana for the In-diana Invitational in Bloomington. Two years ago, the ‘Roos finished 14th in the event at 957 strokes.

UMKC will then make its return trip to Primm, Nev., for the 2012 Summit League Championships on Apr. 23-24 with a spot in the 2012 NCAA Champion-ships on the line.

THE SUMMIT LEAGUE PRESEASON POLLThe UMKC women’s golf team was se-lected to finish sec-ond in The Summit League Preseason Poll in a vote by the league’s head coach-es. The ‘Roos, who finished fifth in last

season’s champion-ship, registered three first-place votes and a total of 75 points, just four points shy of 14-time defending champion Oral Rob-erts.

The Kangaroos boast four players in the top-15 of the league’s fall lead-erboard, including all-league selection Taylor Fisher. Fisher leads the squad with a 77.08 stroke aver-age heading into the spring season. Rachel Mulkey is not far behind at 77.33, while Emily Isaacson (78.00) and Madison Maddox (78.11) round out the foursome.

The Summit League Golf Championships will be held at the Primm Valley Golf Club in Primm, Nev., April 23-24. The team champion will earn the league’s au-tomatic bid into the NCAA Women’s Golf Tournament.

Former UMKC men’s golf student-athlete J.W. VanDenBorn was named the Director of Golf at his alma mater in June 2007. In this capacity, he oversees both the men’s and women’s golf programs for the Kangaroos.

Overall, VanDenBorn has been the head coach for the men’s program for the past eight seasons. In each of the past four seasons (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011), VanDenBorn guided the ‘Roos to at least a second place showing at The Summit League Championship with his 2011 squad winning the first tournament title in school history. He has led the ‘Roos to top-four finishes in the league championship tournament seven times.

In the 2010-11 season, he led UMKC to its first ever NCAA Regional team appearance, and earned Summit League Coach of the Year honors after leading the ‘Roos to the Summit League title. He coached two second-team All-Summit League picks in Ko-rbin Kuehn and Viktor Mikaelsson as well. The ‘Roos won two tournaments during the season, and placed third or better in seven tournaments.

During the 2009-10 season, VanDen-Born coached three student-athletes to individual tournament titles, which were the most individual victories since the 2000-01 season. Senior Brett Iliff won the ReBath Snowman Getaway for his first career victory, Alex Hogben was crowned champion at the Hawkeye-TaylorMade/adidas Invitational in April, where he fired a final round 64, which tied the school record, and Korbin Kuehn claimed the medalist honor at the 2010 Summit League Men’s Golf Championship on the first hole of a sudden victory

playoff.

Following the win, Kuehn was named The Summit League Championship MVP and Co-Newcomer of the Cham-pionship, as well as being named to the all-Tournament team. Kuehn also advanced to participate in the NCAA Regional Championship in Atlanta, becoming just the second ‘Roo golfer to compete in the NCAA Champion-ship.

Kuehn was the second UMKC student-athlete to win the individual league tournament title under Van-DenBorn’s tutelage. Stephen Clark was the first student-athlete to win the Mid-Con Championship in 2006, as he earned medalist honors with a two-under par 214. Subsequently, Clark also was the first UMKC men’s golfer to earn Mid-Con Player of the Year honor.

During his tenure in Kansas City, VanDenBorn has coached a student-athlete to first team all-league honors in each of his seven seasons at the helm of the program. In five of his seven seasons, he had multiple student-athletes recognized, which included two first team and one second team honoree in 2010. Dur-ing the 2005 campaign, VanDenBorn guided Brian Donnelly to Mid-Con Tri-Newcomer of the Year honors.

VanDenBorn has also coached the team to the top single round performances in school history. His squad posted single round records of 280 in a pair of rounds as the 2004 SEMO/Harris Invitational, where they finished with a 54-hole tournament record of 848. During that same event, he led Alan Johnson to a school record 54-hole total of 203

and the top single round performance (64) in school history.

Off the course and on the recruit-ing trail, VanDenBorn has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success as well. Two of his recruiting classes were ranked among the top-25 in the country according to GolfStat. VanDenBorn’s recruiting efforts have produced some of the top players in UMKC men’s golf history, as Alex Hogben, Stephen Clark, Michael Sch-negelberger and Brett Iliff all closed out their careers among the top-six in career scoring averages.

In the classroom, VanDenBorn has had 26 players named to the Academic all-League team and 18 to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. He also coached Michael Schnegelberger to Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors in both 2008 and 2009.

Prior to becoming the head coach, VanDenBorn spent two seasons as a player and another campaign as an assistant coach for the Kanga-roos under former coach Bill Ross. He was officially introduced as the head coach for the program on July 1, 2003.

As a student-athlete, VanDenBorn was a two-year letterwinner for the Kangaroos. As a senior co-captain in 2001-02, VanDenBorn recorded a 75.4 stroke average in 25.5 rounds and was twice named Mid-Continent Conference Golfer of the Week. He captured individual medalist honors by winning the Southeast Missouri State Invitational, where he matched the then school record with a five-under par 66 in the opening round of the event.

As a junior in 2000-01, VanDenBorn quickly established himself as one of UMKC’s top players. He led the Kan-garoos in four tournaments and was named Mid-Con Golfer of the Week (11-1-01) after finishing sixth with a two-over par score of 218 at the SMS Pepsi Challenge.

Before transferring to UMKC, VanDen-Born was the NJCAA Region III cham-pion in 2000, while playing for Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC). He captured the Jayhawk Conference individual championship and was an all-conference pick in 2000, which led to him being named the KCKCC Male Athlete of the Year.

Academically, VanDenBorn earned Verizon Academic All-District honors and Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar accolades. He also was the recipient of UMKC’s Stan Durwood Award, which is given annually to the UMKC student-athlete with the highest grade point average with a minimum of 100 hours passed.

As a prep, VanDenBorn was a four-year football, golf and basketball letterwinner at Henryetta (Okla.) High School.

VanDenBorn earned his bachelor’s degree in business administra-tion from UMKC in 2002. He then received his master’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing and manage-ment from UMKC in May 2009.

He and his wife, Stephanie, were mar-ried in June 2008, and they reside in Lee’s Summit, Mo

Third SeasonMichigan ‘07

Brianna Broderick is entering her third season as the head coach of the UMKC women’s golf pro-gram. The Richmond, Mo., native joined the ‘Roos after serving as the assistant women’s golf coach at Kent State during the 2008-09 school year.

In the 2010-11 season, Broderick led the ‘Roos to a fifth place finish in The Summit League Championships with Taylor Fisher earning First Team all-League honors and Kati Scholten earning Second Team all-League honors under her guidance. Schol-ten, meanwhile, was named The Summit League Golfer of the Week after finishing as the individual medalist at the Wichita State Spring Invitational. Academically, five ‘Roos earned Academic all-League recogni-tion and four were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

During her first season in Blue and Gold, Broderick guided UMKC to a top-three finish at the 2010 Summit League Women’s Golf Championship, which was the program’s second straight top-three showing. Additionally, a pair of student-athletes - Chel-sea Cadwell and Taylor Fisher - earned Second Team all-Summit League honors.

Broderick also coached the ‘Roos to the top two single

round scores in school history in back-to-back rounds during the 2009-10 campaign. UMKC fired a school record total of 300 during the final round of the Jackrabbit Invitational on March 16 before firing a 301 during the first 18 holes of the UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic on March 22 in North Carolina.

The ‘Roos also excelled in the classroom under Broderick’s guidance as a pair of student-athletes were named NGCA All-American Scholars. The program also had four of its five golfers earn Summit League Academic all-League honors and it had three student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

Prior to moving to Kansas City, Broderick helped lead the Golden Flashes to their 11th straight Mid-American Conference Champion-ship and NCAA Regional appear-ance during her lone season in Kent. She also coached three players - Kirby Dreher, Mercedes Germino and Martina Gavier - to First Team all-MAC honors, while Dreher also earned honorable mention all-America recognition by Golfweek and MAC Player of the Year honors. Germino, mean-while, was tabbed as the MAC Freshman of the Year.

Broderick also coached three student-athletes that earned

NGCA All-American Scholar honors and two student-athletes that were named to the 2009 Women’s Golf Academic All-MAC team.

Prior to joining the KSU coach-ing staff, Broderick spent eight months as the Boatwright Intern for the United States Golf As-sociation. As the Junior Golf Coordinator for the Kansas City Junior Tour, she was responsible for the promotion, scheduling and planning of the Tour events.

Broderick’s coaching career began at Michigan, her alma mater, where she served as an undergraduate assistant coach for four months while completing her degree.

A standout player at the Univer-sity of Michigan from 2003-07, Broderick was a two-time all-Big Ten selection, earning first team honors in 2005 and a second team nod in 2007. During her four years at U-M, Broderick did not miss a single tournament, as she played and started 47 straight events for the Wolver-ines.

Broderick, who was ranked among Golf Week’s Top-50 Play-ers in 2005, helped Michigan to nine team titles during her career in Ann Arbor, and she led her squad to a pair of NCAA Central Regional appearances (2005,

2007). She finished her career with a 77.19 scoring average, which ranks second all-time in U-M golf history, and tallied 23 top-20 finishes, 14 top-10 fin-ishes and seven top-five finishes in Maize and Blue.

On the national scene, Broderick advanced to three United States Women’s Amateur Champion-ships from 2004-06.

As a prep, Broderick was the 2001 and 2002 Kansas City Female Metro Player of the Year at Richmond High School. The three-time Missouri state cham-pion also earned MSHSAA First Team all-State honors in 2000, 2001 and 2002 and was selected to the 2000 all-Metro First Team by the Kansas City Star. She also received the 2000 Harry Devine Award for being the outstanding junior golfer in the KCGA and was named the 2002 Midwest Section PGA Player of the Year.

Additionally, Broderick competed at the 2001 and 2002 United States Girls Junior Champion-ship and at the Missouri Junior Championship, where she was the medalist in 2002, a runner-up in 2001 and placed seventh in 2000.

Broderick graduated from Michigan in December 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in general studies.

Chancellor Leo E. Morton

Leo E. Morton was named Chancellor of the University of

Missouri-Kansas City on December 15, 2008. Prior to assuming the Chancellorship, Leo was employed by Aquila, Inc, joining the firm in January 1994 as vice president, performance management. He was named senior vice president in 1996 with responsibility for re-engineering, corporate procurement and environmental services. Morton assumed additional duties for the management of human resources in 1997 and information technology in 1998. He was named senior vice president and chief administrative officer in 2000 as he also assumed responsibility for additional corporate services.

Prior to joining Aquila, Morton’s management career spanned 26 years in a wide range of engineering and manufacturing positions with AT&T Microelectronics, Bell Laboratories, General Motors, Rust Engineering Company and Corning Glass.

Morton has been a University of Missouri-Kansas City trustee since 2000 and was in his third year as chairman of the Board of Trustees when he stepped down to serve as the university’s interim chancellor. Previously, he was a member on UMKC’s Center for the City board and chaired the community relations committee of the Trustees.

He is chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Menorah Medical Center and chairman of the advisory board of Prep-KC, a major regional youth educational development organization. Morton also serves as 2nd vice chairman of the board of Swope Community Enterprises. In addition, he serves on the Board of Trustees for MRI, the Economic Development Corporation, the Kansas City Area Development Council, the Starlight Theatre, the independent advisory commission on racial profiling for the Overland Park Police Department, the Ironhorse Golf committee and as a commissioner for the Local Investment Commission.

Morton has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tuskegee University, and a master’s degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Tim Hall was named the UMKC Director of Athletics on Feb. 14, 2007. In this role, he serves as a member of the Chancellor’s executive cabinet, and is responsible for leading the strategic direction in growing the university’s intercollegiate athletics program.

Since Hall accepted the post in 2007, UMKC has seen competitive improvement every year. UMKC has won Summit League Championships in men’s soccer, men’s golf, men’s tennis and softball. This academic year, all four of those UMKC sports were named favorites to win the Summit League, with three others picked in the top three.

The women’s basketball team posted its first 20-win season since 1991-92 and its second ever trip to the Summit League Tournament Championship game. In the fall, the women’s soccer team advanced to the conference tournament for the first time in school history, while setting a school record for wins. Women’s tennis also set a record for wins following last year’s season, and advanced to its first ever Summit League Tournament Final appearance.

UMKC’s athletics department staffing has grown during Hall’s tenure as part of an effort to catch up to other Summit League schools. Those additions have made UMKC more competitive in recruiting student-athletes, while providing fundraising support for many facility improvements and agreements in each sport.

The successes were reinforced by the NCAA in 2009, as UMKC Athletics received full NCAA certification without condition. The certification showed that the University is operating its athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership and is valid for the next 10 years.

Hall led the ‘Roos to their most successful year since 2000 in 2008-09 and the ‘Roos continued excelling in 2009-10. UMKC claimed a pair of Summit League titles in men’s soccer and men’s tennis, while also earning the runner-up nod in both men’s and women’s golf, which led to a record 2009 finish in the annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup.

During the 2010 campaign, the men’s tennis team won The Summit League regular season title and the men’s golf program was the league runner-up. This helped the men’s teams finish fourth in the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All Sports Award standings, the best showing since 2001-02. Overall, the ‘Roos moved up to sixth place in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, which was the highest finish since 2006-07.

In the classroom, the department posted a grade point average of better than 3.20 this past year. It had a 3.10 cumulative grade point in the spring 2010 semester and eight programs finished with at least a 3.0 GPA. Additionally, UMKC finished with a 958.7 APR average and the volleyball team received the NCAA public recognition award.

Internally, Hall has been hard at work to align the department with peer institutions and the NCAA. He restructured the rules compliance office to be more in line with NCAA rules and the Student-Athlete Support Services Office to better assist and prepare Kangaroo student-athletes. He also continues to work with new UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton to craft the athletics’ strategic plan in concert with the University’s new strategic goals.

From a fund raising standpoint, Kangaroo Athletics have never been better. In 2008, UMKC received a $5 million pledge from the Stanley H. Durwood Foundation, the largest gift in Athletics’ and the fourth-largest gift in University history. The resulting Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field opened in August 2009 and is among the premier soccer facilities in the Midwest region.

Additional facility improvements have included revamped locker rooms and lounges for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball and the retro-fitting of Old Swinney Gymnasium, which provides the basketball and volleyball programs with a first-class practice facility. The project was funded through $500,000 of private support.

Hall also was instrumental in the renovation of the Swinney Recreation Center with the installation of new seatback bleachers and new scoreboards, which enhances the venue for the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs. The renovation allows the men’s basketball squad to move its games back on campus full-time for the 2010-11 season.

Hall is also in the midst of a partnership with the Kansas City Parks Department to build a sports complex that will house both indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a 200-meter indoor track and a softball field.

On an annual basis, the Kangaroo Athletics Scholarship Fund, which was rebranded prior to the 2007-08 school year, has posted three straight years of 50 percent growth, while donor participation is up over 200 percent. He also increased the department’s total sponsorships and gift-in-kind assistance to over $1.5 million and cash and trade sponsorships have increased 265 percent since 2008. Additionally, Hall has increased UMKC’s external support by 45 percent over fiscal year 2009 from $1.6 to $2.4 million. Hall also has also reconnected with over 200 former ‘Roos with the former student-athlete association.

In the community, Hall has been active in an effort to get more community leaders involved in the Athletics Department. Hall restructured the Athletics Foundation Board in 2009 by adding representatives from a number of Kansas City-based businesses such as Cerner, Kansas City Southern Railways, Lathrop Gage LLC, and Mark One Electric. New partnerships have come quickly to Kangaroo Athletics, including television (Niles Media Group) and radio (810 WHB) agreements that ensure a continued presence within the Kansas City region. Renowned local advertising firm Bernstein-Rein produced a redesigned athletics logo and graphics set, while additional contractual agreements have also been signed with adidas, Truman Medical Centers, Pepsi, T-Mobile and JumpTV to better serve the department’s student-athletes.

Hall continues to bring leadership to UMKC and The Summit League. In addition to his role on the Chancellor’s Executive Cabinet, Hall serves on The Summit League Joint Council leadership committee and sits on the league’s men’s basketball scheduling committee and the men’s and women’s soccer coaches committees. Additionally, Hall is also in the second of a three-year term on the NACDA Division 1-AAA Executive Committee and serves on the NCAA volleyball rules committee.

Hall came to Kansas City after serving as the Associate Athletics Director for Development at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, from 2003-07. While at KSU, he was a member of the athletics senior administrative staff, working in all phases of departmental management including game and personnel contracts, scheduling, budget, policy and strategic planning.

In this role, Hall created and implemented a comprehensive restructuring of the athletic advancement unit, resulting in the creation of the Office of Athletic Advancement. He increased fundraising by more than 33 percent, helped secure the largest gift to date in the history of KSU athletics, a $1.53 million gift for the baseball stadium renovation, and raised more than $16.1 million.

Prior to moving back to Ohio, Hall worked at Eastern Kentucky University from 2000-03. Hall began work as the collegiate Director for Development in 2000 before being promoted to the Director of Major Gifts and Special Projects in 2001. In this capacity, he raised over $4.6 million for the university, including $1.3 million for athletics.

Hall also served as the Assistant Director of Development at Saint Xavier University in Chicago from September 1999 through October 2000. At Saint Xavier, Hall managed fundraising efforts for a $13 million Athletic and Convention Center. He also managed the President’s Club, and developed and implemented the Cougar Club, an athletics affinity group.

Before moving to Chicago, Hall worked at Youngstown State University as an Assistant Director of Athletic Development from 1997-99. In this role, he helped the university complete its successful $26 million capital campaign. Hall also began his collegiate career at YSU, serving in the school’s athletic marketing and promotions office.

Hall earned his bachelor’s degree in sports administration from the University of Toledo in 1994. He then received his master’s degree in sports administration from Kent State University in 1998.

Hall and his wife, Beth, have four children, Aidan, Aislin, Donovan and Landon, and they reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Carla Wilson was promoted to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business and Administration in September 2007. Prior to her appointment, Wilson served as the Assistant Athletics Director for Business Operations for nine years.

In her current role, Wilson is responsible for the human resources and business operations of the department, as well as all day-to-day operations in the absence of the Director of Athletics. Wilson is responsible for the preparation, development and maintenance of the budgets for all 16 sports and nine administrative areas of the department. She is also the sport administrator for women’s basketball and men’s and women’s tennis, and serves as a member of the Director of Athletics senior staff.

As Senior Woman Administrator, Wilson is the highest ranking female involved with the management of UMKC’s Intercollegiate Athletics program, and represents UMKC in dealings with The Summit League and the NCAA. She also partakes in program-wide administrative responsibilities, including decision making at the institutional, conference and national levels. She collabora-tively addresses departmental goals, supports women’s interests and supports and helps manage diversity, gender equity and Title IX matters.

Wilson, who is an action member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators, the College Athletic Business Management Association and the Minority Opportuni-ties Athletic Association, is a 2010 graduate of the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program.

A 23-year career Kangaroo, prior to Wilson’s 14 years in athletics, she served UMKC as a budget specialist in the University’s administrative affairs office for four years, where she was respon-sible for assisting in the preparation of the University’s $159 million budget. From 1988-93, she also served in the accounting department as a senior accountant.

Wilson graduated from UMKC in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She and her husband Kevin, have four children, Shae, Tristan, Kevin Jr., and Kylan, and they reside in Olathe, Kan.

Carla WilsonSenior Associate Athletics Director for Business and Finance/Senior Woman Administrator

Ursula Gurney was named the Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services in August 2008. Prior to her appointment, Gurney spent seven years in various roles in academic athletic support at The Ohio State University.

In her current role, Gurney serves as a member of the Director of Athletics Senior Leadership Team and is responsible for the academic development of over two hundred student-athletes in sixteen varsity sports. She oversees athletic advising, initial and continuing eligibility monitoring, at-risk programming, the tutorial, mentoring and summer bridge programs, study hall, athletic orientation and freshman transition classes. She also directs the Athletic Department’s Life Skills program and serves as the advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). In addition to her academic responsibilities, Gurney serves as the sport supervisor for the Men’s and Women’s Golf programs.

Under Gurney and her staff, UMKC has built a tradition of academic success. The current cumulative department GPA is 3.23, and in 2010-11 UMKC topped the Summit League with a cumulative GPA of 3.22. Currently 14 of UMKC’s 16 teams have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better.

At Ohio State, Gurney served as an academic specialist in the Student-Athlete Support Services Office. She assisted in the academic support of over 900 student-athletes in 36 varsity sports. She specialized in preparing football student-athletes to meet education requirements, and traveled with the football team to the 2008 BCS National Championship game in New Orleans, La., to monitor academic development.

In addition to her advising role, Gurney served as an undergraduate instructor in the history department at Ohio State from 2002-2008.

Gurney earned her bachelor of arts degree in history from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2000. She then went on to earn her master’s degree in history from SFU in 2002. She is currently a PhD. candidate in history at The Ohio State University.

Ursula GurneyAssociate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Services/Director of ‘Roo Life Skills

Aulet, who began his duties at UMKC in May 2007, oversees game operations for each of UMKC’s 16 intercollegiate sports and serves as point person for construction of new athletic facilities for the Kangaroos. Additionally, he serves as the coordinator for the strength and conditioning departments, and is the sports supervisor for men’s soccer and volleyball. Prior to his tenure at UMKC, he served as equipment manager at the University of Kansas, where he was responsible for maintenance and inventory of all equipment for KU’s Olympic sports programs. He was also the departmental contact for Coca-Cola and served as the chair of the KUAC Staff Advisory Committee during the 2003-04 school year.

Aulet received his bachelor of arts degree in management from Hiram College in 1995, earning a master of arts degree with a sports administration concentration from Kent State University in 1999. He and his wife Kerrianne have two daughters - Danielle and Samantha - and reside in Lawrence, Kan.

Ron Aulet Associate Athletics Director for Operations/Facilities

Josh Snyder was hired on as the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance on May 31, 2011. Snyder comes to UMKC from Boise State University, where he served as the Executive Director for NCAA Compliance. Prior to his appointment at Boise State, Snyder spent seven years at Iowa State in several different leadership roles. While at Boise State, Snyder served as a senior staff member for the Compliance Department. He was responsible for all compliance operations and efforts. He began his appointment with the Cyclones in 2003 as the Director of Compliance and moved up the ranks to be named an Assistant Athletics Director in two years.

Snyder received a bachelor’s of science in exercise and sports sciences from Iowa State University in 1995. He went on to graduate Cum Laude from Creighton University School of Law in 2001, ranking in the top-15 in his class. Snyder was admitted to practice before all Nebraska state and federal courts.

He has served on multiple NAAC Committee’s and presented at several NCAA Regional Rules Seminars. While at Creighton, Snyder received two American Jurisprudence Awards for finishing first in his class in a course, was on the Editorial Staff and was a published author.

Josh SnyderAssociate Athletics Director for Compliance

Jessica Dickson was named the Assistant Athletics Director for External Relations in July 2007. Dickson joined the UMKC staff as the Director of Marketing and Promotions in Aug. 2006. As the As-sistant AD for External Relations, Dickson oversees the marketing and promotions and ticketing initiatives for the Kangaroos.

Dickson came to UMKC from Time Warner Cable/Metro Sports in Kansas City. While with TWC, Dickson created promotional materials and advertising packages for sporting events, movies, specials and cable networks. She also educated Time Warner media sales departments across the country on the network programming.

Dickson graduated from Central Missouri State University in May 2002 with a bachelor of science degree in public relations and a minor in photography. At CMSU, she was a four-year letterwinner on the women’s soccer team.

The Kangaroo Athletics Scholar-ship Fund (KASF) supports the

student-athletes of UMKC through the offsetting of expenses such as scholarships, travel, recruiting, and equipment. As costs continue to rise, support for our student-athletes through the KASF becomes more crucial as we continue to build an elite Summit League athletics depart-ment.

Dr. Russell WhiteHead Sports Medicine physicianDr. Russell White received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine in 1974 and completed a three-year residency in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Missouri Medical Center-Columbia. Today he is Professor of Medicine and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Community and Family Medicine at the UMKC School of Medicine where he is Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Center.

Dr. Meg GibsonTeam Sports Medicine physician Margaret “Meg” Gibson MD is board certified in family medicine and has a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine. She works at Truman Medical Center Lakewood Hospital. She participated in collegiate athletics at Washington University in St. Louis. She completed her medical training including sports medicine fellowship in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia at the Unversity of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She has worked with athletes of all levels, from high school to professional. She spent additional time training in concussion management and is a Certified ImPACT Consultant.

Dr. George HarrisTeam Sports medicine physicianGeorge D. Harris, M.D., M.S., is a Professor and Assistant Dean at UMKC School of Medicine. He is board certified in family medicine and has certificates of added qualifications in both adolescent medicine and sports medicine. He has written widely on a variety of medical topics including areas in Sports Medicine. He is the Associate Director for the UMKC Sports Medicine Fellowship. His experience in the coverage of athletes and sporting events spans over 26 years. He was previously involved in Spring Training for Toronto Blue Jays professional baseball in the early 1990’s team and continues to provide medical coverage of Division I Collegiate sports teams, presently with UMKC.

Dr. Billy IronsTeam Sports Medicine physicianDr. Billy Irons attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine and did his residency at Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals. He is on the American Board of Family Medicine as well. He is now at Truman, and came there after 22 years in private practice in rural Oklahoma. During that time he assisted with high school sports. While at Truman he has spent five years in a Family Practice Orthopedic clinic and the last five years he has been involved in the UMKC Sports Medicine Fellowship.

Dr. Nina Upham Intern Sports Medicine physician Dr. Nina Upham was born and raised in Finland, where she also completed medical school. After working for 2 years in Finland as a family physician, she moved to the US and completed UMKC Family Medicine Residency at TMC Lakewood. During residency, she met and married her husband. After residency, she continued her education in UMKC Sports Medicine Fellowship where she now serves as a physician for the UMKC athletes.

Dr. Dan Gurley Team Orthopeadic physicianDr. Dan Gurley attended Texas Christian University and received his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He did his residency in Wichita. He was a member of the Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center, in Jackson, Miss. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). Gurley specializes in Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy and Orthopedic Surgery; specializing in shoulder, elbow, and knee injuries

Dr. Grant Smith Team DentistDr. D. Grant Smith is a comprehensive family dentist providing cosmetic, restorative and general family dentistry. Dr. Smith graduated from the UMKC School of Dentistry. Following graduation Dr. Smith decided to complete a Residency program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at UMKC. Dr. Smith received a Bachelor degree in Biology from Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. He is a member of the Academy of Sports Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the Missouri Dental Association, the Greater Kansas City Dental Society, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Kansas City University Dental Study Club.

Dr. Andrew Jacobs Sport PsychologistDr. Andrew Jacobs is one of the top sport psychology experts in the United States. He works with athletes of all ages from youth athletes to professionals in areas from concentration to motivation, to team building to sportsmanship. His expertise is at helping athletes and coaches reach their peak potential. He became one of the first sport psychologists to work with the U.S. Olympic team, professional teams and a major university in the 1980’s. Since 1992, he has hosted an extremely popular weekly sport psychology radio call-in show. He has produced numerous audio programs on success and visualization and has given over 1000 speeches nationally about mental training and sportsmanship. Dr. Jacobs grew up in Kansas City, received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in 1976 and his doctorate from the California School of Professional Psychology: San Diego in 1981, with a specialty in sport psychology and performance enhancement.

Becca McConville DieticianRebecca McConville, MS, RD, LD, is the UMKC registered and licensed dietitian. She is a member of the Kansas City Dietetic Association, the American Dietetic Association (ADA), and the ADA’s SCAN (Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition) group. She attended the University of Kansas Medical School and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Missouri. She currently works at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, Mo.

Victor F. Swyden Athletics Training FacilityThe Victor F. Swyden Athletics Training Facility continues UMKC’s commitment to the total care of each student-athlete. Under the guidance of Head Athletics Train-er Ted Ferris, the UMKC Sports Medicine staff prioritizes prevention, treatment and

rehabilitiation in working with Kan-garoo student-athletes.

Built in 1999, the Swyden Athletics Training Facility honors the memory of former Kansas City councilman and longtime UMKC Athletics supporter Victor F. Swyden, who headed the taskforce that guided the Kangaroos from NAIA to NCAA Division I. A lifetime resident of Kansas City and a graduate of Paseo High School, Swyden was honored in 1993 with the Golden Torch Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by UMKC upon an individual.

For the 2009-10 season, the UMKC Athletics Department is teaming up with the UMKC School of Medicine Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, under the direction of Dr. Russell D. White. The Fellowship Program will provide health care for the student-ath-letes by staffing the training room 3-4 days per week and will also be available to see student-athletes in need of urgent care. Members of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program will also be present at all major home sporting events and tournaments, in addition to providing assistance with any specific athletic events. Dr. George D. Har-ris, Dr. Meg Gibson, Dr. Billy Irons, Dr. Matt John and Dr. Emily Lott will all be serving the needs of UMKC student-athletes.

Dr. Dan Gurley, meanwhile, is entering is eighth year as the Kangaroos primary ortho-pedic surgeon, and Dr. Grant Smith serves as the team dentist for the Kangaroos.

Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field will serve as the official home of the Kangaroos and will provide student-athletes, students and community groups with one of the top soccer facilities in The Summit League and the Mid-west. The $9 million addition adds to the growing residential feel of the UMKC campus. The gift from the Durwood Foundation and its trustees to construct this stadium is another in their long history of supporting a variety of UMKC initiatives.Durwood will provide seating for 850 fans and a separate addition will host locker rooms, offices and concession areas. Stanley H. Durwood was one of the University’s and the athletic program’s most ardent supporters. His affiliation with UMKC began when NCAA Division I partici-pation was a pipe dream. Durwood also helped establish an endowed scholarship for UMKC student-athletes.

The home of UMKC Athletics, Swinney Recreation Center is also one of the finest fitness centers in all of Kansas City. Created through a $14.5 million addition to the old Swinney Gymnasium, the center includes five basketball courts, four racquet ball courts, a 25-meter indoor/outdoor pool and three exercise rooms - two weight rooms and a cardio room.

The competition court serves as the home venue for UMKC volleyball in the fall, UMKC women’s basketball and select men’s basketball contests during the winter. It is also the main practice venue for the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams.

Kangaroo student-athletes enjoy some of the finest locker room facilities in The Summit League courtesy of a major renovation undertaken prior to the 2007-08 school year. Along with providing each student-athlete their own individual locker space, the facility also features a player’s lounge that includes leather couches and a big screen television. In addition, the lounge is equipped with a computer workstation with a high-speed internet connection.

Original Old Swinney Gymnasium, affectionately known as “Old Swinney”, which is part of the Swinney Recreation Center received a face lift in the summer of 2010. The renovation transforms the Old Swinney Gymnasium into a modern, collegiate practice facility that will better serve the student body, faculty and staff members and community members, as well as provide outstanding training opportunities for ‘Roo student-athletes.

The $500,000 renovation plan calls for new basketball/volleyball court flooring and basketball standards and volleyball nets to be installed in the existing facility. The current skylights in the building will also be altered, which will allow for modified lighting to be put into place. The entire Old Swinney interior will be updated and scoreboards will be installed.

UMKC Athletic Facilities & Departments

The Dutton Brookfield Strength and Conditioning Center at UMKC’s Swinney Recreation Center was officially dedicated on Sept. 22, 2004.

Led by Director of Strength, Conditioning and Sports Enhancement Trumain Carroll, the Brookfield Center is designed to help enhance UMKC student-athletes’ levels of perfor-mance while significantly reducing the chances for injuries. The benefit of performing structured strength and power training throughout the entire year will give student-ath-letes the opportunity to reach new levels of physical development.

The center contains free weights, plus platforms, benches and machines and the latest cardiovascular equipment. In the summer of 2006, the area purchased the latest Sports Motion system to give student-athletes the video analysis needed to improve their techniques.

2010-11 UMKC Student-Athlete Award RecipientsThe Student-Athlete Academic Support Services Office (SASSO) provides a variety of support services to ensure student-athletes acquire the tools

to meet their academic, professional and personal goals. SASSO integrates its services within the mission of the University of Missouri–Kansas City and the Athletics Department to promote the overall development of the student-athletes. To foster the positive development of student-athletes, SASSO provides a comprehensive support unit which includes: academic counseling, degree progress monitoring, assessment, tutoring, computer access, academic and individual skill development, mentoring, individual-ized study plans and knowledge of on-campus resources.

The Student-Athlete Support Services Office was founded in 1987 in con-junction with the UMKC Center for Academic Development (CAD).

Located in the Swinney Recreation Center, SASSO was renovated and ex-panded in 2005 and updated in 2008. The academic unit includes a study and computer room, quiet tutor spaces and several offices for personnel.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC)Two members of each team are selected to serve on SAAC, the members represent the student leaders for the depart-ment. SAAC meets every three weeks during the academic year to discuss a variety of issues including student-athlete welfare, NCAA issues and UMKC issues. Additionally, SAAC is engaged in community and UMKC outreach. Under the direction of the Associate AD for Student-Athlete Services, SAAC students have been involved in many community and UMKC events such as: Walk A Mile in Her Shoes, Harvesters and Children’s TLC.

“Ascending” and “improving” are adjectives frequently used in media coverage of The Summit League as it continues a renaissance on the playing fi eld and in the classroom. As The Summit League celebrates its 30th anniversary season as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, the level of performance and achievement among the 11 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes in 19 championship sports continues to grow. Since 2007, The Summit League has produced 39 All-Americans and 28 Academic All-America selections along with three NCAA Champions, two NBA Draft choices and one Olympic Silver medalist. Headlining The Summit League’s most recent history were the additions of the University of South Dakota and the University of Nebraska Omaha to its membership. USD joined in 2009 and the 2011-12 academic year marks its fi rst year of full league competition. UNO’s membership took effect on July 1, 2011 and it will begin league competition in 2012-13. The Summit League’s visibility continues to expand on several fronts. The 2011 Baseball Championship drew a record 5,128 fans, topping the previous high by almost 1,500. Another successful Summit League Basketball Championship totaled a combined attendance of over 32,000 which ranked as the second-highest fi gure in league history while the men’s tournament was one of just six outside the traditional “power conferences” to average 4,400 or better per session. Television exposure also increased with the broadcasts of four Summit League sport championships in 2010-11. For the second consecutive season, all 14 men’s and women’s basketball tournament games were televised live, including the women’s championship on ESPNU and the men’s on ESPN2. Furthermore, The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships were televised for the fi rst time and the league’s entire Baseball Tournament was carried live, marking another fi rst. The national reach of The Summit League was furthered when three member institutions hosted 2010-11 NCAA Championship events. IUPUI was a quad-host for the Women’s Basketball Final Four, UMKC co-hosted the Volleyball Championship and Oakland hosted the Great Lakes Cross Country Regional Championship. In 2013, Oakland will host the Men’s Basketball Second and Third Rounds and IUPUI will serve as co-host for a Men’s Basketball Regional. In men’s basketball, The Summit League ranked No. 18 in the Sagarin Ratings, placing four teams among the top 150 and six in the top 200. In the Mid-Major Top 25 poll, league champion Oakland ranked No. 5 with two fi rst-place votes entering the NCAA Tournament, putting them ahead of two Final Four participants, including the national runner-up. The Summit League set a league-record by playing 16 games against AP nationally-ranked teams, the highest total among mid-majors, including seven top-10 opponents, highlighted by Oakland’s win at then-No. 7 Tennessee. Women’s basketball joined the men in sending multiple teams to the postseason with three teams advancing for the second-straight year, including Oral Roberts, which reached the WNIT’s round of 16 to match the league’s deepest run in that tournament. Summit League teams combined to record four victories over “power six” conference foes during the season.

Individually on the hardwood, Oakland’s Keith Benson was selected in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks and Oral Roberts’ Steven Roundtree was named Mid-Major Freshman of the Year by CollegeInsider.com. On the women’s side, ORU’s Kevi Luper became the fi rst player in NCAA history to lead the nation in both points per game and steals per game in the same season. Several teams continued impressive championship streaks within the league in 2010-11. Oral Roberts, which fi nished the season nationally-ranked, won its 14th-straight baseball title, tying for the second-longest streak in NCAA history. Oakland captured its 12th-consecutive men’s and women’s swimming and diving titles while North Dakota State won its fourth-straight men’s and women’s indoor track and fi eld championships and its third softball crown in a row. South Dakota State became the fi rst women’s basketball team to win three consecutive league championships. The Summit League enjoyed a successful track and fi eld season with eight All-Americans, including six at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Oral Roberts’ Jack Whitt fi nished as runner-up in the pole vault at the Outdoor Championships after placing third indoors. North Dakota State’s Whitney Carlson became the fi rst female athlete in league history to earn All-America honors in two events at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships during the same year. Two Summit League student-athletes received the prestigious NCAA Elite 88 Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the fi nals site for each of the NCAA championships. Amy Anderson (women’s golf) and Carlson (outdoor track and fi eld), both from North Dakota State, the lone non-FBS public university to have multiple recipients, were presented with the honor and added All-America honors for their athletic performances. Anderson led the league’s individual accomplishments, placing 12th at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships, the highest fi nish ever by a Summit League player, and competing as an amateur in the U.S. Women’s Open. IPFW’s Amy Recht claimed her fourth consecutive Women’s Tennis Player of the Year honor and became the fi rst Summit League athlete to win the sport’s top award in each season of eligibility. Academically, six Summit League student-athletes received Academic All-America honors and six teams were bestowed with the NCAA Public Recognition Award, an honor given to teams that have a Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The accomplishments of 2010-11 came on the heels of the exceptional success the previous two years. In 2009-10, IUPUI’s Chen Ni became The Summit League’s fi rst female NCAA Champion when she took fi rst in the platform dive. Celebrating its 30th season in Division I athletics

Bahamas’ 4x400-meter relay team after winning both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 400-meter titles and IUPUI’s George Hill became The Summit League’s second NBA fi rst round draft pick. Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its fi fth year of rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all league student-athletes. Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the creation of a new image and the addition of three member institutions. The Summit League has a combined enrollment of over 135,000 at 11 universities, fi ve of which are located in the top 76 U.S. media markets (Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Tulsa and Omaha). Member institutions include: IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), the University of Nebraska Omaha (which begins league competition in 2012-13), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, the University of South Dakota (in its fi rst year as a full member), South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. Eastern Illinois University is an associate member in swimming and diving and men’s soccer. These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s outdoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in all applicable sports. Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League has had several transcendent moments on the national stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the fi rst round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on its way to a berth in the Sweet 16. A decade later, Valparaiso captured the nation’s attention when Bryce Drew hit “the shot” to defeat No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA fi rst-round game and spark its Sweet 16 run. More recently, Oral Roberts’ baseball program fi nished the 2004 campaign with a national-ranking and became the fi rst Summit League school to reach an NCAA Super Regional in 2006. Three years later, North Dakota State’s 2009 softball team became the fi rst League member to win an NCAA regional and advance to the Super Regional round. During the 2008-09 basketball season, South Dakota State’s women’s team was nationally-ranked throughout the year and capped its season with an NCAA Tournament fi rst round victory. The League has produced fi ve NCAA champions, four Olympic athletes and several All-Americans in the sports of track and fi eld, swimming and diving and cross country. Numerous professional athletes and several draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball fi rst round picks, a pair of NBA fi rst rounders, and one WNBA selection. Former Summit Leaguer Kevin Duckworth (NBA) was a two-time all-star during his professional career. Recent and historical success coupled with an increased growth among its membership base gives The Summit League a promising future on the landscape of college athletics.

ASSOCIATE MEMBER: Eastern Illinois University competes as an associate member in swimming and diving and men’s soccer.

One of the Summit League’s most iconic moments came when Valparaiso’s Bryce Drew hit “the shot”, a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, to top Mississippi in the fi rst round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Valpo’s story captivated the nation as they became the league’s second team to reach the “Sweet 16.”

The Legends at Village West boasts 1.1 million square feet of retail space and is home to more than 100 shops and restaurants. This northern shopping mecca is also located by the Kansas Speedway and Community America Ballpark.

The Kansas Speedway hosts major league racing events like NAS-CAR’s Nextel and Busch series and Indy Racing League. Community America Ballpark is home to the Kansas City T-Bones and serves as the temporary site for the Kansas City Wizards. The Wizards are currently constructing a new $160 million state-of-the-art stadium at Legends.

Located within a short walk from the Volker Campus, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art includes works of art from some of the great masters. The lawn of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art resembles a badminton court with 18-ft.-tall sculptures, titled “Shuttlecocks.”

The Country Club Plaza offers 14 blocks of shopping amid beautiful

More than 80 miles of lights outline every building, dome and tower on the Country Club Plaza each holiday sea-

son. The Plaza is within a short walking distance from the Volker Campus.

Kansas City is known as the City of Fountains with more than 200 foun-

tains on the Plaza and in downtown KC.

Cowtown ShmowtownAlthough Kansas City’s reputation outside the Midwest may be that of an agricultural cowtown, its residents know the truth. UMKC is in the middle of it all, with history, culture and entertainment options on all sides and within just a short walk or drive.

Here’s just a few of the options that students at UMKC have at their disposal.

Kansas City

Municipal Auditorium has hosted more NCAA Tournament games and more Final Fours than

any other venue in the country. The UMKC men’s basketball team will play a game there this

season.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum chronicles the his-tory and heroes of the Negro Leagues from their founding after the Civil War to their demise in the 1960s. The first professional Negro Leagues were founded in Kansas City in 1920, just two blocks from the museum.

The $850 million Power & Light District is the largest new devel-opment project in the Midwest. Just steps from the Convention Center and a short drive from the Volker Campus, the Power & Light District features eight blocks of dining, nightlife and enter-tainment venues.

Located next to the Power & Light District, the Sprint Center opened in downtown Kansas City in October 2007. The Sprint Center is a state-of-the-art, 18,500-seat arena offering marquee concerts and sporting events.

Located in the Sprint Center, the College Basketball Experience celebrates college basketball by placing visitors in electrifying, game-like situations. Home to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as well, UMKC had the honor of opening the CBE and held its first practice of the 2007-08 season.

Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, seats more than 79,000 on game day.

The Kansas City Royals play in Kauffman Stadium, which just wrapped up a $250 million renovation.

Kauffman Stadium’s unique features include a 322-foot-wide water spectacular. The water spectacu-lar is the largest privately funded fountain in the world.

Both teams play at the Truman Sports Complex.

The Evolution of the Kangaroo

When choosing a mascot, the discussion usually starts with three main categories - predatory animals, historical or regional figures, or humans that represent

power and strength - and ends with a collection of the usual suspects. Thanks to Walt Disney, The Kansas City Star and the Kansas City Zoo, UMKC has a very unique mascot, but how exactly does the Kangaroo fit? As it turns out, quite well.

In 1936, the issue of a mascot was first brought up by the editors of The University - the campus newspaper for Kansas City University. Although there were no organized intercollegiate athletics teams at the time, the newspaper staff felt that KCU’s debate team - and more importantly the school itself - deserved a unique identity. During that same year, the Kansas City Zoo purchased a pair of baby Kangaroos, and The Kansas City Star lit the fire with an article titled “Kangaroo May Go To KCU ... Student Editors Believe University Should Have A Symbol.”

Others on campus were not as enthusiastic. The editors of The Crataegus - the University’s yearbook - thought that a Kangaroo was not an appropriate symbol for KCU. A proposed feature page in the 1936-37 yearbook for the Kangaroo emblem was deleted, sparking a tremendous amount of debate.

As the debate wore on, interest from the campus community began to wane. It looked as if KCU would not adopt a mascot after all. But in 1937, two events would combine to indelibly link the Kangaroo with the University and give the mascot a name.

During the student government elections in the spring semester, the CO-OP Party adopted the Kangaroo as its official mascot, naming him Kasey. With a landslide victory in April behind the slogan “Kasey fits KC”, the first part of the foundation was laid. During the same month the first issue of KCU’s humor magazine - The Kangaroo - was published, with a kangaroo gracing the cover. Six months later, a kangaroo made another appearance on the cover of The Kangaroo, and although it wasn’t a solo appearance, it put a quick end to the debate over whether a kangaroo was an appropriate mascot for KCU.

Missouri native and famed cartoonist Walt Disney provided the artwork for the cover illustration, which featured Mickey Mouse shaking hands with Kasey Kangaroo. In a matter of a few years, The Kangaroo thrived while The Crataegus floundered, with the latter eventually folding. The Kangaroo became the University’s yearbook and the Kangaroo became the official mascot of Kansas City University.

Kasey has undergone several changes over the years, with the most recent metamorphosis led by UMKC Director of Athletics Tim Hall. With the help of local advertising agency Bernstein-Rein, UMKC developed a set of new athletics marks in the spring of 2008. After a community vote, the new Kangaroo logo was unveiled in May. With its aggressive snarl, the new Kangaroo capitalizes on UMKC’s mission to be an outstanding urban university while keeping mindful of the traditions established in 1937.
