PERSONNEL


J.W. VanDenbornFormer UMKC men’s golf student-athlete J.W. VanDen-Born was named the Director of Golf at his alma mater in June 2007. In this capacity, he oversees both the men’s and women’s golf programs for the Kangaroos.

Overall, VanDenBorn has been the head coach for the men’s program for the past 12 sea-sons. In six of the past eight seasons (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015), VanDen-Born guided the ‘Roos to at least a second place showing at conferece championship with his 2011 squad winning the first tournament title in school history and the 2013 squad winning the second. He has led the ‘Roos to top-four finishes in the league

championship tournament nine times.

Last season, VanDenBorn led the ‘Roos to a runner-up finish at the WAC Championhsip with Antoine Rozner garnering WAC Player of the Year and First Team All-WAC honors with Mitch Tucker joining him on the First Team. During the year, Rozner and Tucker notched the first and second lowest averages in UMKC history, placing them first and third on the career list. As a team, the ‘Roos carded four of the eight lowestrounds in school history and three of the eight lowest tournament scores in school history, including the lowest in both.

In 2014, he guided the ‘Roos to a fourth place finish in their first ever appearance in the WAC Championship, while helping Nathan Hughes and Rozner to Second Team All-WAC Recognition, with Hughes capturing the individual title at the Desert Shootout to highlight the season. Academically, Hughes, Cole Chelle and Jack Fiscus were each honored as Aca-demic All-WAC selctions, as well as GCAA All-American Scholars.

During the 2012-13 season, VanDenBorn was named Summit League Coach fo the Year after guiding the ‘Roos to their second trip to the NCAA Tournament in school history. Under his guidance, Korbin Kuehn, Hughes and Rozner were named to the First Team All-Summit League and Chelle and Fiscus were named to the Second Team All-Summit League, while Kuehn was named Summit League Golfer of the Year and Golfer of the Tournament after claiming his second individual Summit League title and Antoine Rozner was named Newcomer fo the Championship.

Academically, Hughes was named to the Summit League Academic All-League Team, while six individuals were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence and seven were named to the 2012-13 Summit League Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll, including three as Distinguished Scholars.

In the 2010-11 season, he led UMKC to its first ever NCAA Regional team appearance, and earned Summit League Coach of the Year honors after leading the ‘Roos to the Summit League title. He coached two second-team All-Summit League picks in Korbin Kuehn and Viktor Mikaelsson as well. The ‘Roos won two tournaments during the season, and placed third or better in seven tournaments.

During the 2009-10 season, VanDenBorn coached three student-athletes to individual tour-nament titles, which were the most individual victories since the 2000-01 season. Senior Brett Iliff won the ReBath Snowman Getaway for his first career victory, Alex Hogben was crowned champion at the Hawkeye-TaylorMade/adidas Invitational in April, where he fired a final round 64, which tied the school record, and Korbin Kuehn claimed the medalist honor at the 2010 Summit League Men’s Golf Championship on the first hole of a sudden victory playoff.

Following the win, Kuehn was named The Summit League Championship MVP and Co-New-comer of the Championship, as well as being named to the all-Tournament team. Kuehn also advanced to participate in the NCAA Regional Championship in Atlanta, becoming just the second ‘Roo golfer to compete in the NCAA Championship.

Kuehn was the second UMKC student-athlete to win the individual league tournament title under VanDenBorn’s tutelage. Stephen Clark was the first student-athlete to win the Mid-Con Championship in 2006, as he earned medalist honors with a two-under par 214. Subsequently, Clark also was the first UMKC men’s golfer to earn Mid-Con Player of the Year honor.

During his tenure in Kansas City, VanDenBorn has coached a student-athlete to first team all-league honors in each of his seven seasons at the helm of the program. In five of his seven seasons, he had multiple student-athletes recognized, which included two first team and one second team honoree in 2010. During the 2005 campaign, VanDenBorn guided Brian Donnelly to Mid-Con Tri-Newcomer of the Year honors.

VanDenBorn has also coached the team to the top single round performances in school history. His squad posted single round records of 280 in a pair of rounds as the 2004

SEMO/Harris Invitational, where they finished with a 54-hole tournament record of 848. During that same event, he led Alan Johnson to a school record 54-hole total of 203 and the top single round performance (64) in school history.

Off the course and on the recruiting trail, VanDenBorn has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success as well. Two of his recruiting classes were ranked among the top-25 in the coun-try according to GolfStat. VanDenBorn’s recruiting efforts have produced some of the top players in UMKC men’s golf history, as Alex Hogben, Stephen Clark, Michael Schnegelberger and Brett Iliff all closed out their careers among the top-six in career scoring averages.

In the classroom, VanDenBorn has had 26 players named to the Academic all-League team and 18 to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. He also coached Michael Sch-negelberger to Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors in both 2008 and 2009.

Prior to becoming the head coach, VanDenBorn spent two seasons as a player and another campaign as an assistant coach for the Kangaroos under former coach Bill Ross. He was officially introduced as the head coach for the program on July 1, 2003.

As a student-athlete, VanDenBorn was a two-year letterwinner for the Kangaroos. As a se-nior co-captain in 2001-02, VanDenBorn recorded a 75.4 stroke average in 25.5 rounds and was twice named Mid-Continent Conference Golfer of the Week. He captured individual medalist honors by winning the Southeast Missouri State Invitational, where he matched the then school record with a five-under par 66 in the opening round of the event.

As a junior in 2000-01, VanDenBorn quickly established himself as one of UMKC’s top players. He led the Kangaroos in four tournaments and was named Mid-Con Golfer of the Week (11-1-01) after finishing sixth with a two-over par score of 218 at the SMS Pepsi Challenge.

Before transferring to UMKC, VanDenBorn was the NJCAA Region III champion in 2000, while playing for Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC). He captured the Jayhawk Conference individual championship and was an all-conference pick in 2000, which led to him being named the KCKCC Male Athlete of the Year.

Academically, VanDenBorn earned Verizon Academic All-District honors and Cleveland Golf All-Amer-ica Scholar accolades. He also was the recipient of UMKC’s Stan Durwood Award, which is given annually to the UMKC student-athlete with the highest grade point aver-age with a minimum of 100 hours passed.

As a prep, VanDenBorn was a four-year football, golf and basketball let-terwinner at Henryetta (Okla.) High School.

VanDenBorn earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from UMKC in 2002. He then received his master’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing and management from UMKC in May 2009.

He and his wife, Stephanie, were married in June 2008, and they reside in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

brianna broderickBrianna Broderick is enter-ing her seventh season as the head coach of the UMKC women’s golf pro-gram. The Richmond, Mo., native joined the ‘Roos af-ter serving as the assistant women’s golf coach at Kent State during the 2008-09 school year.

This past season, the ‘Roos finished third in the WAC Championship, with Susan Kirschenman being honored as Second Team All-WAC after finishing her career at UMKC with the lowest scoring average in school history. During the year, Broderick guided the ‘Roos to five of the

ten lowest round in school history and five of the nine lowest tournament scores, including the lowest marks in both.

Broderick guided the ‘Roos to a fourth place finish in their first ever WAC Cham-pionship in 2014, while helping Kirschenman to Second Team All-WAC honors. Academically, Kirschenman, Emily Isaacson and Micah Radler were each honored as Academic All-WAC selections, while the trio along with Abbey Campbell all garnered WGCA All-American Scholar honors.

In 2012-13, Broderick oversaw the ‘Roos match their best finish in school history with a runner-up finish in the 2013 Summit League Championship with Isaacson earning all-tournament honors in the process. During the regular season, Isaacson and Kirschenman were each named to the First Team All-Summit League, while Taylor Fisher garnered Second Team honors.

Academically, Kirschenman and Isaacson were named to the Summit League Academic All-League Team, while the duo, along with Micah Radler were honored as WGCA All-American Scholars. Four ‘Roos, meanwhile, were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, while five were named to The Summit League Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll, including one Distinguished Scholar.

During the 2011-12 season, Broderick guided the Kangaroos to a third place results at the 2012 Summit League Championships with a three-round score of 916 that included a school record final round of 299. Under her watch, Fisher garnered her third consecutive all-league recognition and her second consecutive first team selection, while Kirschenman was named to the Second Team in her first season as a ‘Roo. Academically, six UMKC linksters were named Distinguished Scholars on the Summit League Winter/Spring Academic All-League Team.

In the 2010-11 season, Broderick led the ‘Roos to a fifth place finish in The Summit League Championships with Fisher earning First Team all-League honors and Kati Scholten earning Second Team all-League honors under her guidance. Scholten, meanwhile, was named The Summit League Golfer of the Week after finishing as the individual medalist at the Wichita State Spring Invitational. Academically, five ‘Roos earned Academic all-League recognition and four were named to the Com-missioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

During her first season in Blue and Gold, Broderick guided UMKC to a top-three finish at the 2010 Summit League Women’s Golf Championship, which was the pro-gram’s second straight top-three showing. Additionally, a pair of student-athletes - Chelsea Cadwell and Fisher - earned Second Team all-Summit League honors.

Broderick also coached the ‘Roos to the top two single round scores in school history in back-to-back rounds during the 2009-10 campaign. UMKC fired a school record total of 300 during the final round of the Jackrabbit Invitational on March 16 before firing a 301 during the first 18 holes of the UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic on March 22 in North Carolina.

The ‘Roos also excelled in the classroom under Broderick’s guidance as a pair of student-athletes were named NGCA All-American Scholars. The program also had four of its five golfers earn Summit League Academic all-League honors and it had three student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

Prior to moving to Kansas City, Broderick helped lead the Golden Flashes to their 11th straight Mid-American Conference Championship and NCAA Regional ap-pearance during her lone season in Kent. She also coached three players - Kirby

Dreher, Mercedes Germino and Martina Gavier - to First Team all-MAC honors, while Dreher also earned honorable mention all-America recognition by Golfweek and MAC Player of the Year honors. Germino, meanwhile, was tabbed as the MAC Freshman of the Year.

Broderick also coached three student-athletes that earned NGCA All-American Scholar honors and two student-athletes that were named to the 2009 Women’s Golf Academic All-MAC team.

Prior to joining the KSU coaching staff, Broderick spent eight months as the Boatwright Intern for the United States Golf Association. As the Junior Golf Co-ordinator for the Kansas City Junior Tour, she was responsible for the promotion, scheduling and planning of the Tour events.

Broderick’s coaching career began at Michigan, her alma mater, where she served as an undergraduate assistant coach for four months while completing her degree.

A standout player at the University of Michigan from 2003-07, Broderick was a two-time all-Big Ten selection, earning first team honors in 2005 and a second team nod in 2007. During her four years at U-M, Broderick did not miss a single tourna-ment, as she played and started 47 straight events for the Wolverines.

Broderick, who was ranked among Golf Week’s Top-50 Players in 2005, helped Michigan to nine team titles during her career in Ann Arbor, and she led her squad to a pair of NCAA Central Regional appearances (2005, 2007). She finished her career with a 77.19 scoring average, which ranks second all-time in U-M golf his-tory, and tallied 23 top-20 finishes, 14 top-10 finishes and seven top-five finishes in Maize and Blue.

On the national scene, Broderick advanced to three United States Women’s Ama-teur Championships from 2004-06.

As a prep, Broderick was the 2001 and 2002 Kansas City Female Metro Player of the Year at Richmond High School. The three-time Missouri state champion also earned MSHSAA First Team all-State honors in 2000, 2001 and 2002 and was se-lected to the 2000 all-Metro First Team by the Kansas City Star. She also received the 2000 Harry Devine Award for being the outstanding junior golfer in the KCGA and was named the 2002 Midwest Section PGA Player of the Year.

Additionally, Broderick competed at the 2001 and 2002 United States Girls Junior Championship and at the Missouri Junior Championship, where she was the medal-ist in 2002, a runner-up in 2001 and placed seventh in 2000.

Broderick graduated from Michigan in December 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in general studies.

UMKC FIRES SCHOOL RECORD AT RIO VERDE INVITATIONALThe Missouri-Kansas City women’s golf team finished fifth at the Rio Verde Invitational after shooting a school record 54-hole score of 907 at the White Wing Golf Course, topping the previous record of 911 set at the Johnie Imes Invitational earlier this season. The ‘Roos followed up their first round 303 with rounds of 301 and 303, giving them the fifth and twice the 10th lowest team rounds in school history. Susan Kirschenman led UMKC in the event with a 225 that is tied for the eighth lowest round in school history after five birdies over the final two rounds to tie for 13th, while Abbey Campbell tied for 29th, also tallying five birdies in rounds two and three, including twice on the par-4 13th.

‘ROOS CONTINUE HOT SPRING WITH 5TH PLACE FINISH IN ARKANSASThe Missouri-Kansas City women’s golf team continued its best spring in school history as the ‘Roos tied for fifth during their an-nual trip to the UALR Golf Classic in Maumelle, Ark., at the Mau-melle Country Club. The ‘Roos opened the event with a first round 316 on Monday and followed later in the day with a second round 293 that set a new school record by six strokes and stood as the lowest score by any team in any of the three rounds. In Tuesday’s final round, the Kangaroos carded a 312 to finish at +57 with a 922 that ranks as the sixth best 54-hole tournament score in the UMKC annals. Leading the ‘Roos in the return to her home state, senior Micah Radler finished a career-best tied for fifth with a career-low 227. After opening the tournament with a 77 in the first round, Radler came back and shot the lowest score of her career and lowest score of any ‘Roo this season with a 71 that ties for the seventh lowest round ever by a Kangaroo and was one of only two rounds under par by any of the 84 golfers in the field. The Arkansas native then closed out the event with a final round 79 that left her at +11 over the three rounds. Notching the ‘Roos second top-20 finish in the event, sopho-more Mackenzie Black finished in a tie for 19th with rounds of 82, 73 and 76 to send to her to the clubhouse at +15, with the second round 73 standing as the lowest round in the Independence, Iowa, native’s career.

BLACK SETS SCHOOL RECORD ON OPENING DAY OF KANSAS CITY SHOOTOUT PRESENTED BY GARY CROSSLEY FORDMackenzie Black fired a school record 67 in the opening round of the Kansas City Shootout presented by Gary Crossley Ford, becom-ing just the fourth ‘Roo to shoot a round in the 60’s and leading the Missouri-Kansas City women’s golf team to a sixth place standing after the opening day of play at the Shoal Creek Golf Club.

KIRSCHENMAN AND RADLER’S TOP-10 PERFORMANCES LEAD UMKC TO 3RD PLACE AT WAC CHAMPIONSHIPThe Missouri-Kansas City women’s golf team tallied a 921, the sev-enth lowest tournament score in school history, propelling them to a third place finish at the 2015 WAC Women’s Golf Championship at the Wigwam Golf Course in Litchfield Park, Ariz. In their final event in the Blue and Gold, seniors Susan Kirschen-man and Micah Radler led the ‘Roos in the tournament, tying for seventh at +10, 226. The Huxley, Iowa, native, Kirschenman shot a 78 in her final collegiate round with 12 pars on the day, earning a spot on the All-WAC Second Team, while Radler’s third round 77 was highlighted by her birdie on the par-5 13th. Making her WAC Championship debut, freshman Maria Henao carded the ‘Roos lowest round of the day with a 76 that also in-cluded a birdie on 13 and placed her in a tie for 15th on the leader-board. Three shots back, Mackenzie Black notched the ‘Roos fourth top-20 result with a 20th place finish after a final round 79 that saw the sophomore birdie the par-4’s of 8 and 14. In her second ap-pearance in the WAC Championship, sophomore Abbey Campbell tied for 30th, carding birdies on the par-5 4th and the par-4 7th for a final round 80.

FOUR ‘ROOS NAMED WGCA ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLARSThe Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars for Division I, II & III were announced today with a total of 758 women’s collegiate golfers recognized with this prestigious honor, including four ‘Roos, Micah Radler, Susan Kirschenman, Kailee Kuehn and Abbey Campbell. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.

DIAZ TIES SCHOOL RECORD, LEADS ‘ROOS TO 6TH PLACE FIN-ISHCynthia Diaz fired a school record tying 219 at the Chip-N Club Invi-tational to tie for 10th at the Country Club of Lincoln and lead the UMKC women’s golf team to a sixth place finish in the 13 team field with a 914 that ranks as the fourth best score in school history In the opening round, Diaz shot an even par 72 with five birdies, including back-to-back on 17 and 18. The freshman matched her score in round two, carding three birdies in the round, registering her second straight on both the par-4 1st and the par-3 14th. Diaz then closed out the event on Tuesday with a final round 75, high-lighted by her lone birdie on the par-5 13th.

Leo E. Morton was named Chancellor of the

University of Missouri-Kansas City on December

15, 2008. Prior to assuming the Chancellorship,

Leo was employed by Aquila, Inc, joining the firm

in January 1994 as vice president, performance

management. He was named senior vice president

in 1996 with responsibility for re-engineering,

corporate procurement and environmental

services. Morton assumed additional duties for

the management of human resources in 1997 and

information technology in 1998. He was named

senior vice president and chief administrative

officer in 2000 as he also assumed responsibility

for additional corporate services.

Prior to joining Aquila, Morton’s management

career spanned 26 years in a wide range of

engineering and manufacturing positions with

AT&T Microelectronics, Bell Laboratories, General

Motors, Rust Engineering Company and Corning

Glass.

Morton has been a University of Missouri-Kansas

City trustee since 2000 and was in his third year as

chairman of the Board of Trustees when he stepped

down to serve as the university’s interim chancellor.

Previously, he was a member on UMKC’s Center for

the City board and chaired the community relations

committee of the Trustees.

He is chairman of the Board of Trustees of the

Menorah Medical Center and chairman of the

advisory board of Prep-KC, a major regional youth

educational development organization. Morton also

serves as 2nd vice chairman of the board of Swope

Community Enterprises. In addition, he serves

on the Board of Trustees for MRI, the Economic

Development Corporation, the Kansas City Area

Development Council, the Starlight Theatre, the

independent advisory commission on racial profiling

for the Overland Park Police Department, the

Ironhorse Golf committee and as a commissioner

for the Local Investment Commission.

Morton has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical

engineering from Tuskegee University, and

a master’s degree in management from the

Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

CARLA WILSONDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSUMKC, 1988

Carla Wilson was named the fourth Director of Athletics in the Division I era, made official on Monday, December 2, 2013 with a public announcement at the Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City. She held the position in an interim role the previous five months.

Wilson leads the Athletics Department as it competes in the Western Athletic Conference. Wilson’s leadership in the department has touched many facets – budget, human resources, facilities, sport administration and student-athlete welfare and development.

Wilson became the only female athletics director in the Western Athletic Conference, and the first ever female leader of intercollegiate athletics at UMKC. She is one of a few minority women serving as an athletics director at the NCAA’s 351 Division I institutions. At the time of her hire, less than 9 percent of Division I athletics directors were women; less than 4 percent were minority women. She was also the only African-American woman athletics director in Division I not at a historically black college or university.

“Carla is a nationally recognized leader in college athletics, and was an easy and natural choice for this position,” said Leo E. Morton, Chancellor of UMKC. “While we are promoting from within, we are also choosing the best candidate for this important position. Carla has the experience, the dedication and the vision to be an exemplary leader.”

In 2012, she was named the Division I Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators. A member of the WAC AD’s council, Wilson’s 17 years of experience in athletics is vital as she works with the WAC on strategic planning and branding initiatives. Well rounded in sport administration, she has been the sport administrator for 14 of the 16 sports sponsored by UMKC throughout her career – men’s

basketball, women’s basketball, men’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

Prior to the AD appointment, she served as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business and Administration and Senior Woman Administrator since 2007. In this role, Wilson was responsible for the human resources and business operations of the department, as well as all day-to-day operations in the absence of the Director of Athletics, and served as a member of the Director of Athletics senior staff. Wilson was responsible for the preparation, development and maintenance of the budgets for all 16 sports and nine administrative areas of the department. She also served as the sport administrator for women’s basketball, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s tennis. Wilson also served as the Assistant Athletics Director for Business Operations for nine years prior to her time as Senior Associate Athletics Director.

As Senior Woman Administrator, Wilson is the highest ranking female involved with the management of UMKC’s Intercollegiate Athletics program, and represents UMKC in dealings with the conference office and the NCAA. She also partakes in program-wide administrative responsibilities, including decision making at the institutional, conference and national levels. She collaboratively addresses departmental goals, supports women’s interests and supports and helps manage diversity, gender equity and Title IX matters.

Wilson, who is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators, the College Athletic Business Management Association and the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, is a 2010 graduate of the NCAA Fellows Leadership

Development Program. The 18-month program was developed with the specific goal of enhancing the employment and leadership opportunities for racial/ethnic minorities and women at the senior management level of intercollegiate athletics administration. She is also a 2009 NACWAA HERS East graduate. Wilson is also a member of the MOAA Educational and Professional Development Committee and the Program Committee, which is responsible for programming of the MOAA Symposium held at the annual NACDA Convention. Wilson is also a frequent presenter at CABMA Conventions, and serves on the Membership and Program committees for the organization.

Wilson has also been active on NCAA committees during her time at UMKC. In 2010, Wilson began a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Women’s Softball Committee, and serves as the chair of the committee for 2013-14. From 2004-07, she also served on the Division I NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee. Both committees are responsible for selecting the teams that compete for the opportunity to play for a national championship. Since 1999, Wilson has also served on the NCAA Region V Post Graduate Scholarship Committee.

A 25-year career Kangaroo, prior to athletics Wilson served UMKC as a budget specialist in the University’s administrative affairs office for four years, where she was responsible for assisting in the preparation of the University’s $159 million budget. From 1988-93, she also served in the accounting department as a senior accountant.Wilson graduated from UMKC in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She and her husband Kevin, who reside in Olathe, KS, are parents to four adult children, Shae, Tristan, Kevin Jr., and Kaylan.

URSULA GURNEYSENIOR ASSOCIATE A.D.INTERNAL OPERATIONS/SWA

Ursula Gurney was named the Senior Woman

Administrator in May of 2014 as well as being

promoted to the Senior Associate Athletics Director

for Internal Operations. Prior to her appointment,

she was the Senior Associate AD for Academics and

Strategic Initiatives.

In her current role, Gurney oversees the areas of

academics, sports medicine, sports performance

(strength and conditioning), and is the primary

liaison with the admissions and registration

offices. In her new role, Gurney will also oversee

the area of compliance, and have liaison duties

with campus residential housing. She will continue

to serve as the sport administrator for men’s and

women’s golf while furthering her sport supervision

responsibilities to include women’s volleyball. She

will represent UMKC as a member of the Western

Athletic Conference (WAC) Administrative Council

and serve as a member of the Director of Athletics

Senior Staff.

As Senior Woman Administrator (SWA),

Gurney provides administrative leadership in

the management and governance of UMKC’s

Intercollegiate Athletics program, and is heavily

involved in key decision making at the institutional,

conference, and national levels. Gurney collaborates

to address strategic initiatives and departmental

goals, serve as a resource to all student-athletes

and coaches, support gender equity and title IX

issues, and evaluate performance of departmental

employees. Gurney is charged to help foster a

culture that embraces diversity and advocates for

student-athlete welfare.

Under Gurney and her staff, UMKC has built a

tradition of academic success. The current

cumulative department GPA is 3.24. Currently 15

of UMKC’s 16 teams have a cumulative GPA of 3.00

or better. UMKC’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR)

remains steady at 87%, while its current cumulative

Academic Progress Rate (APR) is 966.

Gurney is an active member of the National

Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics

(N4A) and the National Association of Collegiate

Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA). Gurney

is individually certified by the N4A, and has

presented multiple times at N4A’s national and

regional conventions. She is a current member

of the N4A’s Board of Directors, serves on the

N4A’s Strategic Planning Committee as the Chair-

Elect, and is also a member of the NCAA Division I

Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet.

She is a graduate of NACWAA’s 2012 Leadership

Enhancement Institute (LEI), the 2010 NACWAA

West Institute for Administrative Advancement

(IAA), and a 2009 graduate of the N4A’s Professional

Development Institute (PDI) Leader/Manager Track.

Previously, Gurney spent seven years in various

roles in academic athletic support at The Ohio

State University. At Ohio State, Gurney served as an

academic specialist in the Student-Athlete Support

Services Office. She assisted in the academic

support of over 900 student-athletes in 36 varsity

sports. She specialized in preparing football

student-athletes to meet education requirements,

and traveled with the football team to the 2008

BCS National Championship game in New Orleans,

La., to monitor academic development.

In addition to her advising role, Gurney served as an

undergraduate instructor in the history department

at Ohio State from 2002-2008.

Athletically, Gurney swam competitively at

the national level in Canada participating in

several National Championships, Olympic and

Commonwealth Games Trials.

Gurney earned her bachelor of arts degree in history

from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British

Columbia, in 2000. She then went on to earn her

master’s degree in history from SFU in 2002. She

is currently a PhD. candidate in history at The Ohio

State University and resides in Kansas City with her

husband Andrew and son Jackson


BRIAN MORRISSENIOR ASSOCIATE A.D.EXTERNAL OPERATIONS

Brian Morris joined UMKC in September of 2014 as

the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External

Operations.

Morris served as the Associate Athletic Director for

External Operations at Oklahoma Baptist University

previously, and has served in several collegiate

athletics development and corporate sponsorship

roles at institutions such as Oklahoma State,

Wichita State, Arkansas State and Oklahoma.

While at OBU, he assisted in securing a $1.5 million

split gift for OBU and the OBU athletics department.

Morris also increased the athletics department

sponsorship and ticket revenues by 900 percent

from $40,000 to $400,000 in less than two years.

Prior to OBU he was the senior account executive

for Oklahoma State Cowboy Sports Properties

(Learfield Sports), generating $115,000 in new

sponsorship revenue.

Morris also served as the Associate Athletic Director

for Development at Wichita State University. While

at WSU, he led the athletics development staff

and served as a member of the athletic director’s

senior management team. He secured a $1.2 million

naming-rights gift for the Bombardier Learjet

Indoor Practice Facility and maintained oversight

of the $3.4 million annual fund for the Shocker

Athletic Scholarship Organization. He also secured

half of the private funds for the $3.7 million Building

Excellence for the Student-Athlete Campaign.

Morris also worked as the Assistant Athletic

Director for Development at Arkansas State

University, where he led the development staff in

setting a record breaking level for athletics annual

fund giving. He also secured $250,000 in major

gifts for renovation of their baseball stadium.

As the Assistant Director of Athletics Development

at the University of Oklahoma, he raised $850,000

in major gifts during the stadium renovation

campaign, while assisting in the record-setting

annual fundraising drive.

Morris also served as a representative of the

Missouri Valley Conference for the National

Association of Athletic Development Directors.

Morris earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism

and mass communications from Kansas State

University in 2003 and a master’s degree in sport

management from Wichita State University in 2013.

JESSICA DICKSONSENIOR ASSOCIATE A.D.FACILITIES, OPERATIONS & CHAMPIONSHIPS

Jessica Dickson was named the Associate

Athletics Director for Facilities, Operations and

Championships in October 2014. Prior to her

appointment, she served as Assistant Athletics

Director for External Relations for five years.

Dickson joined the UMKC staff as the Director of

Marketing and Promotions in August of 2006.

In her current role, Dickson’s areas of responsibility

include: event management, television and radio

production, marketing and promotions, licensing

and sponsorship execution. In addition, she serves

as the sport administrator for women’s soccer,

softball and spirit squads.

Dickson is an active member of National

Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators

(NACMA) and National Association of Collegiate

Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) and has

presented on multiple occasions at the NACMA

national convention. Dickson is a graduate of the

2011 NCAA/NACWAA Institute for Administrative

Advancement (IAA).

Special assignments at UMKC have included the

2012 NACWAA National Convention Local Organizing

Committee, serving as championship manager for

The 2012 Summit League Men’s and Women’s Tennis

Championships and 2010 NCAA Division I Volleyball

National Championship host liaison to the NCAA.

Dickson has been a volunteer at the Kansas City

Sports Commission and Foundations/WIN for KC

since 2005 and an active member of the Downtown

Council of Kansas City and genKC.

Prior to joining the UMKC team, Dickson spent 4

years at Time Warner Cable/Metro Sports in Kansas

City. While with TWC, Dickson created promotional

materials and advertising packages for sporting

events, movies, specials and cable networks. Her

duties with Metro Sports included serving as a

communications and promotions liaison between

Metro Sports and the media sales office.

Dickson graduated from Central Missouri in May

2002 with a degree in public relations and a minor

in photography. At Central, she was a four-year

letterwinner on the women’s soccer team.

Dickson, her husband Ryan and their daughter

Morgan reside in Kansas City, Mo.

The Victor F. Swyden Athletics Training Facility continues UMKC’s commitment to the total care of each student-athlete. Under the guidance of Head Athletics Trainer Ted Ferris, the UMKC Sports Medicine staff prioritizes prevention, treatment and rehabilitiation in working with Kangaroo student-athletes.

Built in 1999, the Swyden Athletics Training Facility honors the memory of former Kansas City councilman and longtime UMKC Athletics supporter Victor F. Swyden, who headed the taskforce that guided the Kangaroos from NAIA to NCAA Division I. A lifetime resident of Kansas City and a graduate of Paseo High School, Swyden was honored in 1993 with the Golden Torch Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by UMKC upon an individual.

Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field serves as the official home of the Kangaroos and will provide student-athletes, students and community groups with one of the top soccer facilities in the WAC and the Midwest. The $9 million addition adds to the growing residential feel of the UMKC campus. The gift from the Durwood Foundation and its trustees to construct this stadium is another in their long history of supporting a variety of UMKC initiatives.Durwood will provide seating for 850 fans and a separate addition will host locker rooms, offices and concession areas. Stanley H. Durwood was one of the University’s and the athletic program’s most ardent supporters. His affiliation with UMKC began when NCAA Division I participation was a pipe dream. Durwood also helped establish an endowed scholarship for UMKC student-athletes.

The home of UMKC Athletics, Swinney Recreation Center is also one of the finest fitness centers in all of Kansas City. Created through a $14.5 million addition to the old Swinney Gymnasium, the center includes five basketball courts, four racquet ball courts, a 25-meter indoor/outdoor pool and three exercise rooms - two weight rooms and a cardio room.The competition court serves as the home venue for UMKC volleyball in the fall, UMKC women’s basketball contests during the winter. Kangaroo student-athletes enjoy some of the finest locker room facilities in the WAC courtesy of a major renovation undertaken prior to the 2007-08 school year. Along with providing each student-athlete their own individual locker space, the facility also features a player’s lounge that includes leather couches and a big screen television. In addition, the lounge is equipped with a computer workstation with a high-speed internet connection.Original Old Swinney Gymnasium, affectionately known as “Old Swinney”, which is part of the Swinney Recreation Center received a face lift in the summer of 2010. The renovation transforms the Old Swinney Gymnasium into a modern, collegiate practice facility that will better serve the student body, faculty and staff members and community members, as well as provide outstanding training opportunities for ‘Roo student-athletes. The $500,000 renovation plan included new basketball/volleyball court flooring and basketball standards and volleyball nets to be installed in the existing facility. The current skylights in the building were also altered, which allows for modified lighting to be put into place. The entire Old Swinney interior will be updated and scoreboards will be installed.

The Dutton Brookfield Strength and Conditioning Center at UMKC’s Swinney Recreation Center was officially dedicated on Sept. 22, 2004.

The Brookfield Center is designed to help enhance UMKC student-athletes’ levels of performance while significantly reducing the chances for injuries. The benefit of performing structured strength and power training throughout the entire year will give student-athletes the opportunity to reach new levels of physical development.

The center contains free weights, plus platforms, benches and machines and the latest cardiovascular equipment. In the summer of 2006, the area purchased the latest Sports Motion system to give student-athletes the video analysis needed to improve their techniques.

UMKC reached an agreement with the city in the fall of 2011 to play its softball games at the Missouri 3&2 Complex. Since its first season there in the spring of 2012, UMKC has added a new scoreboard and re-furbished the fences around the game field.In its first season, UMKC softball hosted the Missouri Coaches Versus Cancer Classic, and the Summit League Championships.

Municipal Auditorium, a building that many fans believe is the best arena in which to watch basketball, is the home of UMKC men’s basketball. The venue, which has a rich and storied basketball tradition, is now in its eighth decade in Kansas City.

Municipal, which was opened in 1936, has hosted nearly every type of event - from U.S. presidential campaigns to NCAA Final Four Championships. In fact, the auditorium has hosted a total of nine NCAA Championships, which are the most of any other building in the country. The facility is also the home to the NAIA National Tournament and the MIAA Tournament.

A facility upgrade included $3.5 million in renovations, encompassing new arena lighting, new seating and enhanced locker rooms for players and officials.

Municipal Auditorium is located in the heart of downtown Kansas City and steps from the Kansas City Power & Light District.

Municipal Auditorium comfortably seats 10,700 people, including 7,300 permanent uphol-stered seats.

The Arena is one of four self-contained venues in the Municipal Auditorium, and has its own lighted marquee, box office, show office, coat check, restrooms and concessions. It is accessible from the south side of 13th Street, where visitors enter through the splendid Grand Foyer.

The arena is also connected by covered walkways to the Convention Center, Conference Center, and the Auditorium Plaza Garage.

The UMKC men’s and women’s tennis teams practice and compete at the Plaza Tennis Center, which is located just minutes away from the UMKC campus.

The Plaza Tennis Center sits next to the Country Club Plaza, the Midwest’s oldest outdoor shopping area featuring a number of unique shops, restaurants, boutiques and Spanish architecture. The facility includes 14 outdoor lighted courts, a pro shop and locker rooms. The exhibition court, adjacent to the clubhouse, features permanent and bleacher seating for about 300 spectators.

The center has hosted many events, including three Big 12 and the final Big Eight Championships, NCAA Division II Nationals, the Missouri Valley’s National Qualifier Sweet 16, a USTA professional men’s satellite tournament, USA Tournament Tennis sanctioned play, USTA leagues and instructional programs.

The facilty has received local, regional and national awards since its grand opening in 1996. In 1998, the United States Tennis Association named the center a USTA National Outstanding Public Tennis Facility. In 2005, it was named PTR Public Facility of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Registry.

In 2007, the Plaza Tennis Center was recognized as one of the top 50 Tennis Welcome Centers in the country. UMKC Hosted the Summit League Men’s and Women’s Championships there in 2012.

STUDENT ATHLETE SUPPORT SERVICES OFFICEIt is the mission of the Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) to provide a variety of educational support to ensure student-athletes acquire the tools to meet their academic, professional and personal goals. SASSO provides a comprehensive support unit which includes, but is not limited to the following services: academic counseling, academic mentoring, degree and NCAA eligibility monitoring, assessment, tutoring, computer access, academic and individual skill development, individualized study plans, a comprehensive Summer Bridge Program, academic workshops, knowledge of on-campus resources and Life Skill development.SASSO offers a comprehensive tutoring program available to all student-athletes. SASSO employs undergraduate and graduate student tutors to provide assistance in a variety of academic areas. The mission of the tutoring program is to provide subject-specific support and assistance to any student-athlete with equal access for all sports. All SASSO tutoring takes place in study hall, SRC 251.

Most tutoring sessions are a one-on-one meeting with a tutor and student-athlete; however, group tutoring sessions are also available. The SASSO tutoring program serves as an additional support for course material but does not supplement for class attendance. The primary focus of tutoring is the teaching of skills and strategies that support independent learning. SASSO Tutoring services are a privilege and may be revoked if abused.

ATHLETIC ACADEMIC POINTS OF PRIDE• The Athletic Department boosted a cumulative GPA of 3.29 for 2014-15.• 16 of 16 teams finished the 2014-15 with a cumulative GPA above 3.0. The top three

were Women’s Basketball at 3.70, Women’s Cross Country at 3.45 and Women’s Golf at 3.43.

• A total of 141 student-athletes were named WAC Academic All-League.• 106 student-athletes were awarded the distinction of UMKC Scholar-Athlete for 2015.

This distinction is awarded to those with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and higher at the end of each year.

• During the Division I era nine student-athletes have been named Academic All-Americans. Most recently, women’s track and field/cross country’s Courtney Frerichs garnered the honor in 2015.

• The Graduation Success Rate (GSR) is 83%, above the 81% Division I average.

STUDENT-ATHLETES IN THE COMMUNITY The UMKC Athletics Department takes great pride in giving back to its neighbors and friends. During the 2014-15 school year, the ‘Roos outdid themselves by hosting and participating in a plethora of successful events. Service

projects included:

The Roo Life Skills Program is designed to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for UMKC’s student-athletes, encouraging holistic well-being, personal and academic growth, mature decision making skills, and a commitment to the campus and surrounding community. The Life Skills program strives to support student-athlete development in five areas: academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service.

Life Skills Programming

Performance Team - The Performance Team Programming gives student-athletes and coaches the opportunity to gather information to support a healthy lifestyle and achieve optimum athletic performance.

Career Development - Partnerships with UMKC’s Career Services and Career Athletes have been developed to best prepare current student-athletes for life after college.

Community Service Partnerships - Community service is strongly encouraged, and UMKC Athletics feels strongly in the value of giving back to Kansas City and the UMKC campus. SASSO has formed several partnerships in the community and encourages teams and individuals to get involved.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee - UMKC’s SAAC representatives serve as leaders within the athletic department, and on campus. The group of representatives meets monthly to encourage team, department and school unity, while promoting excellence and a commitment to community and campus service.

THE NEW STUDENT UNION UMKC opened a new 109,000-square-foot Student Union in August 2010. The new Union offers a bird’s eye view of Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza, a new 329-seat theater, a two-story bookstore, new restaurants (Chick-fil-A Express, Baja Fresh Mexican Grill, SubConnection and Jazzman’s Café & Bakery) and 10,000 square-feet of space dedicated to student organizations. Located near UMKC’s residential halls at 51st and Cherry Streets, the $38.3 million Student Union features a green roof terrace and wide floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the Plaza, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and UMKC’s Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field.

The Legends at Village West boasts 1.1 million square feet of retail space and is home to more than 100 shops and restaurants. This northern shopping mecca is also located by the Kansas Speedway, Children’s Mercy Park and Community America Ballpark.

The Kansas Speedway hosts major league racing events like NASCAR’s Sprint and Nationwide series. Sporting Park is home to the MLS’s Sporting KC, while Community America Ballpark is home to the Kansas City T-Bones.

Located within a short walk from the Volker Campus, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art includes works of art from some of the great masters. The lawn of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art resembles a badminton court with 18-ft.-tall sculptures, titled “Shuttlecocks.”

The Country Club Plaza offers 14 blocks of shopping amid beautiful Spanish architecture, fountains and statues.

More than 80 miles of lights outline every building, dome and tower on the Country Club Plaza each holiday season. The Plaza is within a short walking distance from the Volker Campus.

Kansas City is known as the City of Fountains with more than 200 fountains on the Plaza and in downtown KC.

Although Kansas City’s reputation outside the Midwest may be that of an agricultural cowtown, its residents know the truth. UMKC is in the middle of it all, with history, culture and entertainment options on all sides and within just a short walk or drive.

Here’s just a few of the options that students at UMKC have at their disposal.

Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, seats more than 79,000 on game day.

The Kansas City Royals play in Kauffman Stadium, which just wrapped up a $250 million renovation. Kauffman Stadium’s unique features include a 322-foot-wide water spectacular. The water spectacular is the largest privately funded fountain in the world. Both teams play at the Truman Sports Complex.

Municipal Auditorium has hosted more NCAA Tournament games and more Final Fours than any other venue in the country. The UMKC men’s basketball team plays the majority of its games at this historical venue.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum chronicles the history and heroes of the Negro Leagues from their founding after the Civil War to their demise in the 1960s. The first professional Negro Leagues were founded in Kansas City in 1920, just two blocks from the museum.

The $850 million Power & Light District is the largest new development project in the Midwest. Just steps from the Convention Center and a short drive from the Volker Campus, the Power & Light District features eight blocks of dining, nightlife and entertainment venues.

Located next to the Power & Light District, the Sprint Center opened in downtown Kansas City in October 2007. The Sprint Center is a state-of-the-art, 18,500-seat arena offering marquee concerts and sporting events.

Located in the Sprint Center, the College Basketball Experience celebrates college basketball by placing visitors in electrifying, game-like situations. Home to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as well, UMKC had the honor of opening the CBE and held its first practice of the 2007-08 season.

FACTSAfter completing its 51st year of intercollegiate competition, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and feature some of the nation’s best programs. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the schools in the WAC to advance their pro-grams to contend at the top levels of the NCAA.

The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s most diverse markets and largest metropolitan cities. In addition, the WAC’s student-athletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions.

The WAC has experienced tremendous success over the years. In men’s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 24 of the past 29 seasons. In baseball, the WAC has boasted two national champions since 2003. In women’s basketball, the conference has had at least two teams qualify for the NCAA Tournament 10 times in 22 seasons, with a record five teams in 1998. The WAC also sent teams to three BCS football bowl games since 2006.

In 2013-14, the WAC will create a new digital network to give fans streaming internet access to many of its regular season games and postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, softball and baseball.

The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition.

The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men’s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title. Arizona finished second in the NCAA College World Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State claimed the league’s first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy. Fresno State was the last WAC school to earn an NCAA team title when it won the College World Series in 2008.

Since 1962, several changes have occurred. UTEP and Colorado State became members in September 1967, while Arizona and Arizona State withdrew on June 30, 1978. The WAC then added San Diego State (1978), Hawai‘i (1979) and Air Force (1980). Before 1990, the WAC sponsored championships only in men’s sports. However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single conference under one administrative structure, and the 1990-91 athletic year was the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name. Fresno State was added in 1992, and then in 1996, the women’s programs from Air Force and Hawai‘i along with six new schools (UNLV, Rice, San Jose State, SMU, TCU and Tulsa) came into the WAC. Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming withdrew on June 30, 1999. Nevada (2000), Boise State (2001) and Louisiana Tech (2001) were added while TCU withdrew following the 2000-01 season. In 2005, Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State joined the WAC after Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa withdrew. Boise State withdrew prior to the 2011-12 season. In 2012, the WAC added Denver, Seattle U, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State. The current membership began on July 1, 2013 when the WAC added Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, Kansas City, UTPA and Utah Valley to join Idaho, New Mexico State and Seattle U. The new institutions replace withdrawing members, Denver, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, Utah State, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State.

The WAC has had just six commissioners in its history. Paul Brechler was named the first leader of the conference and held the position from 1962-1968. He was followed by Wiles Hallock (1968-71), Stan Bates (1971-80), Dr. Joe Kearney (1980-94), Karl Benson (1994-2012) and current commissioner Jeff Hurd (2012-present).

Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports – nine men’s and 10 women’s. For the men, there are champion-ships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball.

The WAC office has been located in the Denver area since the conference’s inception with the exception of a two-year stay in Phoenix from 1964-66.

A decade on the move...July 1, 2005 - Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State become official members of the WAC.

November 24, 2005 - The WAC streams its first sporting event (the opening match of the volleyball tournament) via the internet using WAC.TV.

September 3, 2008 - The WAC announces a contract extension with ESPN that guarantees more than 300 regular-season and 45 championship events will be aired on the ESPN networks through the spring of 2017.

August 27, 2010 - The WAC and Learfield Sports announce the creation of the WAC Sports Network to enhance the coverage of football and basketball in the WAC’s media markets.

July 1, 2012 – Denver, Seattle, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State become official members of the WAC.

October 9, 2012 - The WAC Board of Directors extend invitations for membership to CSU Bakersfield and Utah Valley, effective July 1, 2013.

November 27, 2012 - The WAC Board of Directors extend an invitation for membership to Grand Canyon, effective July 1, 2013.

December 5, 2012 – Chicago State becomes a member of the WAC, effective July 1, 2013.

December 19, 2012 – Texas-Pan American accepts an invitation to become the eighth member of the conference for the 2013-14 season.

January 9, 2013 – The WAC reinstates men’s soccer.

February 7, 2013 – The University of Missouri-Kansas City accepted an invitation for membership to join the conference effective July 1, 2013.

June 11, 2013 – Jeff Hurd is named the sixth commissioner in league history.

June 11, 2013 – WAC Board of Directors determined that the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will return to Las Vegas and the Orleans Arena March 12-15, 2014. The Board also committed to the development of a strategic plan to facilitate conference growth that includes both a digital network and a new marketing/branding campaign.

July 1, 2013 – CSU Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, UMKC, UT-Pan American and Utah Valley become official members of the WAC.


When choosing a mascot, the discussion usually starts with three main categories - predatory animals, historical or regional figures, or humans that represent power and strength - and ends with a collection of the usual suspects. Thanks to Walt Disney, The Kansas City Star and the Kansas City Zoo, UMKC has a very unique mascot, but how exactly does the Kangaroo fit? As it turns out, quite well.

In 1936, the issue of a mascot was first brought up by the editors of The University - the campus newspaper for Kansas City University. Although there were no organized intercollegiate athletics teams at the time, the newspaper staff felt that KCU’s debate team - and more importantly the school itself - deserved a unique identity. During that same year, the Kansas City Zoo purchased a pair of baby Kangaroos, and The Kansas City Star lit the fire with an article titled “Kangaroo May Go To KCU ... Student Editors Believe University Should Have A Symbol.”

Others on campus were not as enthusiastic. The editors of The Crataegus - the University’s yearbook - thought that a Kangaroo was not an appropriate symbol for KCU. A proposed feature page in the 1936-37 yearbook for the Kangaroo emblem was deleted, sparking a tremendous amount of debate.

As the debate wore on, interest from the campus community began to wane. It looked as if KCU would not adopt a mascot after all. But in 1937, two events would combine to indelibly link the Kangaroo with the University and give the mascot a name.

During the student government elections in the spring semester, the CO-OP Party adopted the Kangaroo as its official mascot, naming him Kasey. With a landslide victory in April behind the slogan “Kasey fits KC”, the first part of the foundation was laid. During the same month the first issue of KCU’s humor magazine - The Kangaroo - was published, with a kangaroo gracing the cover. Six months later, a kangaroo made another appearance on the cover of The Kangaroo, and although it wasn’t a solo appearance, it put a quick end to the debate over whether a kangaroo was an appropriate mascot for KCU.

Missouri native and famed cartoonist Walt Disney provided the artwork for the cover illustration, which featured Mickey Mouse shaking hands with Kasey Kangaroo. In a matter of a few years, The Kangaroo thrived while The Crataegus floundered, with the latter eventually folding. The Kangaroo became the University’s yearbook and the Kangaroo became the official mascot of Kansas City University.

Kasey has undergone several changes over the years, with the most recent metamorphosis led by former UMKC Director of Athletics Tim Hall. With the help of local advertising agency Bernstein-Rein, UMKC developed a set of new athletics marks in the spring of 2008. After a community vote, the new Kangaroo logo was unveiled in May. With its aggressive snarl, the new Kangaroo capitalizes on UMKC’s mission to be an outstanding urban university while keeping mindful of the traditions established in 1937.
