Welcome to Hape. This is our 27th year in business.

We’ve come a long way from our beginnings as an

educational toy supplier to kindergartens in Germany.

While our imaginative wooden toys have remained true

to their classic roots, we continuously rethink nearly

every other aspect surrounding them. Reduce, reuse,

and recycle are not just words at Hape. They are a

mantra. Responsibility is reflected in an assessment

of the environmental impact at each stage of our

toys’ lifecycle: from the materials we use, to the way

products get to your store, to the packaging a child

opens up. Because we manufacture products for

children, how every product affects the world we

live in is a high priority.

Our toys are designed to have a long life, which is why

many of them are passed down from generation to

generation. But rethinking ways to tweak traditional

play patterns is where innovation kicks in.

Play is neither limited, nor defined, by culture, language, or gender.

Since producing one of the first full lines of

bamboo toys in 2005, we’ve continued to explore

the possibilities of this amazingly flexible resource.

We now maintain our own bamboo forest, and

sponsor bamboo workshops for international

designers. Several of the newest bamboo toys in

our collection are the result of those workshops.

Finally, when we think and rethink play, we strive to

create toys with a global sensibility. All Hape toys

bamboo and wood, classic and new are designed to

be intuitive. Play is neither limited, nor defined, by

culture, language, or gender. Every Hape toy

encourages children to have fun, no matter who

they are or where they live.

These are the ideas that drive our company.

We hope you’ll think and rethink about them

MaterialsHape was the first company to introduce a full range of bamboo toys. Bamboo is an environmentally friendly material that offers new possibilities for sustainable toy production.

ProductionHape has strategically considered surface treatment, energy consumption, and packaging options to minimize environmental impact and maximize efficiency.

By-products & WasteHape has introduced key processes to ensure that the variety of by-products produced cause minimal impact to the environment. A water purification system utilizes limited or no chemicals to release the cleansed water back into circulation.

Shipping & TransportationHape buys materials from 10 countries and sells to over 50. Locating the Hape factory only 3km from the Ningbo-Zhoushan Harbor, one of the largest ports in the world, created transportation as well as ecological advantages.

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing

plants in the world. If cultivated properly,

it can fully regenerate within 3 months

causing no detriment to the surround-

ing ecosystem. Bamboo raises the water

level in the areas that surround it. It is

an enormous consumer of CO2, thereby

increasing the amount of oxygen in the

air. It softens the sounds of the city, and

provides a natural barrier of beauty.

Although technically a grass, bamboo

has the look and feel of the wooden toys

that Peter Handstein played with as a

child. It’s strength and flexibility offer

interesting and ecological alternatives to

Hape’s designers.

In 2004 Hape hosted China’s first UNESCO

bamboo workshop. The unique properties

of bamboo inspired new types of designs

and twists on traditional toys. Hape’s

bamboo toys, the industry’s first collection

of toys based on this natural resource,

grew out of the UNESCO event.

Hape has since established its own bamboo

workshops, inviting international design

students to work with their craftsmen to

create new toys using bamboo. A special-

ized bamboo design facility is located in

Zheijang, adjacent to the company’s own

bamboo forest.

Like parents, bamboo is both a provider and a protector.
