Abstract

The present paper deals with the study of phytodiversity of Nagaur district which is purely based on floristic

exploration during the period of 2014-2017. A total number of 227 species belonging to 172 genera and 80

families of 5 different groups of phytodiversity viz. algae (1), fungi (3), Bryophytes (3), pteridophytes (2),

gymnosperms (2) and angiosperms (69) were recorded. This study provides on understanding of

phytodiversity pattern in arid and semi-arid region. Out of total 227 species, 205 species of angiosperms

belonging to 160 genera were recorded.

Introduction

Rajasthan is the largest state of India which is located in the north-western part of India. Geographically it

lies between 23030”N to 30012”N latitude and 69030”E to 78017”E longitude. The district of Nagaur is

poor in forest resources. Nagaur district is situated between 26025” and 27040” North latitude & 73010”

and 75015” East longitude. It is the fifth largest district is Rajasthan with wast terrain spreading over 17,718

km2. Its geographical spread is a good combine of plain, hills, sand and mounds a part of great Indian thar

desert. According to census of India, 2011, Naguar comprises 33, 07,743 populations (male - 1696325,

female - 1611418) with 19.25% decadal growth rate (2010-11). The literacy rate is 64.08% (Male - 78.90%,

Female - 48.63%). These study will also be helpful in the state and national flora. In order to achieve the

objectives, district flora for the state of Rajasthan has been started. In this context, district, flora of Jaipur

(Sharma, 1974), Flora of Indian desert (Bhandari, M.M., 1978 & 1995), Flora of Bhilwara (Parmar and

Singh, 1982), Flora of Tonk (Shetty and Pandey, 1983), Flora of Banswara (Singh, 1983), Flora of Jalore

(Vyas et al., 1985), Flora of Bikaner (Parmar et al., 1985), Flora of Alwar (Parmar, 1987), Flora of Pali

(Pandey and Singh, 1989), Flora of Shri Ganganagar (Singh and Dhillon, 1989), Flora of Churu (Singh et

al., 1997), Flora of Nagaur (Sharma and Aggarwal, 2008), study of phytodiversity of Sikar district (Vyas et

al., 2014), spermatophytic flora of Ajmer district (Harsh et al., 2018), Vegetation of Deedwana Tehsil,

Nagaur (Quereishi, 2018) and Floristic composition of beer Jhunjhunu conservation reserve of Rajsthan,

India (Chaudhary et al., 2018).

The present work is an endeavour to begin with phytodiversity of this region for the collection of specimens

as future reference and herbarium methodology given by Jain and Rao (1976) was followed.

The taxa are arranged alphabetically order under their respective families which are arranged accoring to the

classification of Bentham and Hooker (1862-1883). Identification of species is based on the flora of

Bhandari (1995) and Shetty & Singh (1987-1993).

Materials and methods

The survey for plant collections and observations were conducted at regular interval during 2014-2017.

Excursions were undertaken 3-4 times per month. Field trips were arranged in a way to cover all the

locations at more or less flowering or fruiting stages. A detailed field stidy was carried out to observe the

diversity of plant species including algae, fungi, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Plant species were collected documented and identified with the help of taxonomic literature and RUBL,

Jaipur. These taxa are arranged alphabetically under their families which are arranged according to the

classification of Bentham and Hooker (1862-1883).

Result & Discussion

The Indigenous and naturalized phytodiversity of Nagaur district is comprised of 227 species belonging to

172 genera distributed among 80 families in which 1-algae, 3-fungi, 3-bryophytes, 2 - pteridophytes, 2-

gymnosperms and 69 angiosperms are reported in this study.

Out of 69 angiosperm families, 62 dicot and 7 monocot familes are reported. Out of 69 families of

angiosperms recorded from Nagaur, dominant families are fabaceae (23), poaceae (11), caesalpiniaceae

(10), euphorbiaceae (10), solanaceae (9), asteraceae (8), mimosaceae (8), amaranthaceae (6) and malvaceae

(6).
