Leader: I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord, our feet shall stand within Thy gates O Jerusalem! (Psalm 122:1)

People: For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. (Psalm 84:10)

Leader: Because of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek Thy good. (Psalm

122:9)

People: Those that be planted in the house of the Lord, shall flourish in the courts of our God. (Psalm 92:13)

Leader: Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house. Lord, I have loved Thy habitation, the place where Thy honor dwelleth. (Psalm 26:8)

People: For the Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him.

(Habakkuk 2:20).

Leader: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord my strength and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:14)

Unison: O Sing unto the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things. Make a

joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth, sing His praises. (Psalm 98:1, 4)

(Please Stand for the Reading of God’s Word)Old Testament

Judges 4:1-10 (New Living Translation) — She Changes Everything Leader: After Ehud’s death, the Israelites again did evil in the Lord’s sight. So, the Lord

turned them over to King Jabin of Hazor, a Canaanite king. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-haggoyim.

People: Sisera, who had 900 iron chariots, ruthlessly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years. Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help.

Leader: Deborah, the wife of Lappidoth, was a prophet who was judging Israel at that time.

People: She would sit under the Palm of Deborah, between Ramah and Bethel in thehill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites would go to her for judgment.

Leader: One day she sent for Barak son of Abinoam, who lived in Kedesh in the land ofNaphtali. She said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: Call out 10,000 warriors from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun at Mount Tabor. And I will call out Sisera, commander of Jabin’s army, along with his chariots and warriors, to the Kishon River. There I will give you victory over him.”

People: Barak told her, “I will go, but only if you go with me.”

Leader: “Very well,” she replied, “I will go with you. But you will receive no honor in this venture, for the Lord’s victory over Sisera will be at the hands of a woman.” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh.

ALL: At Kedesh, Barak called together the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali, and 10,000 warriors went up with him. Deborah also went with him.

Make your offerings, tithes, and gifts to special envelopes right from the palm of your hand. You can give to First A.M.E. Church Pasadena wherever you are.

Scripture of the Day

A Godly Woman. “She dresses with strength and nobility, and she smiles at the future. “She speaks with wisdom, and on her tongue, there is tender instruction.” Proverbs 31:25-26

Quote of the Day"There is NOTHING in this world as personal, as nurturing, or as life changing as the influence of a Righteous Woman." Russell Ballard

Thought of the WeekA godly woman is a precious and priceless gift of God. A woman shapes the way people speak, behave and even influence others. What makes a woman influential in a lasting and God honoring way is not her position, education, personality or background. The basis of her lasting influence is her character (Prov. 31:10-31).  A godly woman is the best kind of woman to have around. Proverbs 31:30 says, “charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised”. A godly woman is a woman who knows God and fears Him. To fear God means to reverence and respect Him. If we could all grasp the importance of fearing God, this would sort out a lot of divisive quarrels. What kind of influence does a godly and God-fearing woman have? A godly woman can influence the direction of an entire nation. Her influence begins in the home and then permeates throughout the life of the church and ultimately society. As a mother shapes the character of her children, they will grow up with an understanding and worldview that was primarily influenced by her.

Humor of the WeekOne day, on their 30-year anniversary, a fairy appeared at the home of a 60-year-old married couple and said to the husband: "I understood from your wife that you were a model husband throughout your marriage, and I would like to fulfill a wish of yours in honor of your anniversary." The husband smiled and said to his wife: "I am sorry my beloved wife, but such an opportunity won’t come again, “He turned to the fairy and said, “For the next few years I want to spend time with a woman 30 years younger than me." The fairy smiled and said, "That's exactly what I thought you'd answer." The fairy winked at the woman, waved her magic wand, and turned the husband into a 90-year-old man.

The Reverend Judi Wortham-Sauls

Rev. Judi Wortham-Sauls, a woman of God, is currently on the ministry staff AND serves as the young adult pastor at the historic First African Methodist Episcopal (FAME) in Los Angeles. She is also the leader and creator of a BRAND-NEW Women’s Bible Study at FAME called, W.O.W. (Women Working Out In the Word). The Bible Study consists of a 45-minute spiritual workout as well as a 30-minute physical workout.

Women’s ministry, a key and enduring priority throughout her service to the Lord, informs her life. She teaches 2 monthly Bible studies in Los Angeles and 1 monthly Bible Study in Oakland, CA. Often creative in her approach, she demonstrates journaling, crafting and coloring in ways that nurture greater insights in the Word. She assigns Scripture readings, books, poetry and incorporates music, videos and workbooks in her lessons. Open to questions and analytical, she initiates discussions that broaden spiritual awareness. She also organizes pajama parties for Christian women of all generations as an opportunity to guide, enlighten, and instruct. She organizes and speaks at retreats for women, frequently. She participates in prayer lines.

She sets a good example, as she lives her principles. Currently deeply involved in the African American Voter Turnout Task Force (working proactively for the 2020 election)—she is determined to register 10,000 new voters and to encourage a 100 percent voter turnout of African-American congregations.

With the young adults at FAME, she provides spiritual guidance to young adults (ages 19-39), and teams with them in their journey to a lifelong commitment to Christ. In addition to inspiring them about prayer, and other life tools to develop a strong and abiding faith, she also directs activities that encourage personal growth and community service.

An expert quilter, she gives lessons and displays her artistic works in a context much broader than sewing. She has been commissioned to do TWO pieces for the new AMEC Publishing House in Nashville. She is proud to be one of three African American artists and the only woman working on the art for this brand-new building that is due to be completed in May 2020.

She pieces together scraps and discards nothing, creating something beautiful and useful out of nothing, like her slave great-grandmothers, and the women who came before them. She designs and stitches abstract artwork, images from the Bible and portraits. Working with African cloth and fabrics from here, there and everywhere, she perfects storytelling and messaging. Her quilts also serve as a metaphor.

“One of my greatest purposes is to help women piece their lives together so they are like a whole quilt, with complete wellness and complete healing,” she explains. “They are complete women nutritionally, physically, emotionally, financially and spiritually.”

Like Ruth and Naomi (Ruth 1:16-17), she embraces sisterhood for life.
