“Chaney was histeries! Almal sê net ‘Ag shame Petro’ terwyl hulle my drukkies gee. Dit was vir my oorweldigend en ek het in-mekaar gesak,” het tannie Petro gesê, terwyl sy probeer om die trane terug te hou.

Haar trane is verstaanbaar.

The South African Air Force (SAAF) this week dismissed media reports that it will be forced to close some of its units.

In the Beeld of 27 March, it was reported that the SAAF will soon be forced to close either 85 Combat Flying School or 2 Squadron at Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado outside Louis Trichardt as a result of a 10% cut in the SAAF’s annual budget. This was according to military analyst Helmoed Heitman when asked to comment about the dilemma facing the SAAF. A similar article appeared on the DefenceWeb website.

“The SAAF has no intention to close 85 Com-bat Flying School or 2 Squadron or any other unit within the SAAF.” This was the clear mes-sage from Brig Gen Marthie Visser, direc-tor of SAAF’s Corpo-rate Staff Services. She responded to a media enquiry by the Zoutpans-berger about the future of the two units and its members at AFB Makhado this week.

The initial reports stated that if a decision was to be taken as to what unit should be closed, it would probably be the Hawk unit. Apart from the 10% budget cut, it was argued that the depreciation of the rand also played a major role as it had become too expensive to purchase replacement parts for the planes, especially with regard to the Hawks as parts have to be bought in British pounds.

With regard to the above, Visser admitted that although they were under severe budgetary pressure, the SAAF was doing everything in its power to keep its planes in the air.

“The SAAF and Combat budget is currently under revision and, although under severe pressure,

consistent strategies are being formulated daily to ensure that no capabilities are lost and/or closed. The pressure to ensure that all contracts and flying hours can be maintained is, however, a priority,” Visser said.

Visser added that, following the media reports, sessions were conducted with the base personnel to assure them of the importance of the tasks they perform and that there are no plans to close the base or any of its units. “Owing to the current budget allocation deficiencies and continual price escala-tions, it is, however, extremely difficult to maintain the full amount of flying hours and certain cuts had to be absorbed and limitations were implemented without a loss in capability,” Visser said.

AFB Makhado, orig-inally known as AFB Louis Trichardt, was offi-cially opened in October 1987. It was first home to the Cheetah E aircraft from 5 Squadron, which were phased out by the Cheetah C in 1992. The arrival of the Cheetah D training flight in 1992,

following the closing down of AFB Pietersburg, resulted in the centralisation of all Cheetah assets at AFB Louis Trichardt.

In addition, AFB Louis Trichardt was also home to 19 Squadron, equipped with Oryx helicopters. In 2003, however, the SAAF assigned AFB Louis Trichardt the status of a fighter base and the decision was taken to co-locate the Hawk and Gripen fleet at AFB Louis Trichardt.

This led to the Oryx fleet of 19 Squadron relocat-ing to AFB Hoedspruit to make way for 85 Combat Flying School in 2004, the same year the base’s name changed from AFB Louis Trichardt to AFB Makhado. The following year (2005) saw the transi-tion of the base to becoming an all-jet base, with the SAAB Gripen replacing the Cheetah fleet in 2008.

Yet another child’s life came to a sad end before it could even start.

Members of the Makhado Police are looking for a mother who dumped her newborn baby in Louis Trichardt and left it to succumb to the elements. More heartbreaking is how the last remains of the unborn baby were discovered.

According to information sup-plied to the newspaper, the baby was discovered by a resident of Flamboyant Street’s dog. It is suspected that the dog discovered the baby’s body in a vacant plot at the back of its owners’ house and decided to take it home.

The exact site is difficult to determine, as there are many va-cant plots in the surrounding area, as well as the bordering forestry area north of Flamboyant Street.

A spokesperson for the local police, W/O Cassius Mabatha,

confirmed that the police are in-vestigating the matter. According to him, the police’s investigation is somewhat hindered by the fact that the baby’s body was badly mauled, making a positive iden-tification difficult.

Mabatha pleaded with commu-nity members who might have information about the incident to notify the station immediately. An inquest docket was opened to determine the age and exact cause of death. Pending the outcome of a post mortem, the case might be changed to one of murder, rather than concealment of birth.

As far as the police were able to determine, this baby was the third abandoned newborn baby whose body was discovered in Louis Trichardt since January. Earlier in the year, a baby was discovered in the bushes along the N1 near the Information Cen-tre. Another baby was discovered in some bushes near the Louis

Trichardt Provincial Hospital. In the meantime, Past Leonie

Mayfarth of the AFM Church in Louis Trichardt has once again pleaded with expectant mothers to rather seek help than turn to such extremes. She said that it was not only the AFM church that could assist. Any local church or clinic can be ap-proached, who will in turn assist an expectant mother. There is also an institution in Polokwane who can facilitate adoptions. Mayfarth has invited young mothers who need help to contact her at 084 219 4406. Alternative-ly, Capt Danelle Fourie of the local police’s family protection unit can be contacted at 082 729 0378 for assistance, information or a referral to a social worker. Fourie can also be approached with information that can assist the police with any information that could assist them in their investigations about the three babies.

More than 21 000 direct employment opportu-nities are expected to be created when the newly launched special economic zone (SEZ) in the Vhembe area gets off the ground. Government and subsidiaries are pushing R49 billion into the project and infrastructure development is expected to start in 15 months’ time.

The project was officially launched at the Mphephu Royal Kraal last Thursday. During the ceremony, the manager of the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LIEDA), Mr Ben Mphah-lele, said that the project would start in Actonville in Musina, Bokmakierie, and in Makhado.

The SEZ about to be set up in the Vhembe

Vhembe to be part of multi billion rand SEZ projectarea also came up for discussion in Parliament on Tuesday. In an article that appeared in Business Day Online on Wednesday, it is reported that the Department of Trade and Industry’s director-gen-eral, Lionel October, and chief director Alfred Tau spoke about this to Parliament’s trade and industry portfolio committee. Musina is expected to become the biggest zone, as it will be a springboard for exports into the rest of Africa.

The attractiveness of the SEZs will probably lie in lower corporate tax (15%), incentives, in-frastructure and freedom from customs duty and VAT. “The new special economic zone policy and incentives package have significantly improved the attractiveness of special economic zones,” Mr October told the portfolio committee.

It was reported that the zones were not selected by the Department of Trade and Industry, but by provincial governments. National government provided the overall policy framework and paid for the infrastructure, while provincial governments carried operational costs and municipalities often owned the land. Mr October stressed the impor-tance of close collaboration between the three spheres of government if the zones were to succeed.

During Thursday’s ceremony at Mphephu’s Royal Kraal, Mphahlele also emphasized that this is a project with long-term goals. “We have to first do the environmental impact assessments and approvals,” he said. He was also very optimistic about the job-creation potential of the SEZs. “Re-member, this is just a project which, if it succeeds,

will spread countrywide and will help create much-needed jobs in the rural communities,” he said.

His words echoed those of Trade and In-dustry Minister Rob

Davies, who said a new programme was needed to achieve diversification and decentralisation of industry away from the country’s heavily concen-trated economic zones.

Mphahlele said that SEZs were high-impact eco-nomic catalytic projects and as such were expected to create indirect job opportunities because of the concentrated commercial activity in the areas with-in and around the SEZ footprint. He said that capital projects of this nature required an intricate set of academic qualifications, work experience, compli-ance, regulatory and accreditation considerations.

“There should, however, be room for skills training and a social pact between the business and local communities in terms of employment and em-powerment of resident enterprises. The approach is, therefore, multifaceted,” he said.

King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana described the project as a good agreement and preparation for future generations.

“All the headmen in this area must encourage their people to get involved. This is a historic project for the people of Vhembe, so I want all the people to benefit from it,” he said.

Dignitaries pose for a photograph during the event. Second from left stands King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana and on the far right is Mr Ben Mphahlele, manager of LIEDA, along with officers from LIEDA.

Members of the Soutpansberg Squash Club were filled with a sense of déjà vu as they opened their clubhouse doors this week.

On Tuesday morning, members woke to the news that their club had been broken into - again.

It was a scene of utter destruction. First the thugs unsuccessfully tried to break down an outside safe-ty door. When they could not manage to force the door’s lock open, they proceeded to cut a hole in the roof. This enabled the thieves to lower themselves down into the little kitchen of the clubhouse, from where they embarked on a path of destruction.

The burglars literary left no stone unturned. The contents of every cupboard and drawer were turned out onto the floor. When they could not succeed in breaking the lock to the store room, they simply smashed a hole right through the door, trashing the room once they were inside. After snacking on some the club’s food and drinks, the thieves took off with the club’s stereo system, microwave and computer.

Ironically enough, the stereo was on loan to the club, after their previous stereo got stolen during a very similar burglary in August of last year. Much like Tuesday’s incident, the thugs then also gained entry by cutting a hole in the clubhouse’s thatched roof.

The club’s recent encounter also shared some characteristics with a break-in reported at Ridge-way College on 10 April (on which the newspaper reported in last week’s edition). Much like at the club, the burglars who broke in at the college first tried to force open security rails and doors. Only after their attempts failed, did the burglars cut a hole into the roof.

A spokesperson for the Makhado Police, W/O Cassius Mabatha, confirmed that a case of house breaking has been opened for further investigation. At the time of our going to press no arrests had been made.

In the meantime, however, the club assured members that they would keep the squash courts open, so that members could go and play during the normal club hours.

AFB Makhado

The officer commanding of Air Force Base (AFB) Makha-do, Brig Gen André Barends, pleaded with members of the base, and particularly those working in the administra-tive headquarters, to do their utmost in support of the ac-tivities happening on the base.

These activities include the spouse’s forum, charitable ac-tivities, official tasks, social tasks and religious tasks. Bar-ends was speaking during an indoors ceremony on 15 April aimed at welcoming new staff members while also introducing himself to all members (uniform and defence civilians) work-

ing at the base headquarters. Among the delegates present were the officer commanding of 3 Aircraft Servicing Unit, Col Moses Njomo, and members of the Base Command Council.

Barends said that every mem-ber working in the administra-tive headquarters was equally important and that he or he had a role to play. He urged all members to remain loyal, devote themselves to working hard, and to promote esprit de core among each other. Barends said that this would help in achieving the core business of the base in support of the South African Air Force.

In addition, Barends said that an award for the best worker

of the month would be given to dedicated members who performed over and above their tasks as a way to boost their morale and confidence.

Barends welcomed the base’s air wing coordinator Col Pine Pienaar who, according to him, will also be serving as his second in command of the base. He also welcomed the newest member on the base, Ms Chrestinah Mandule, who was appointed as the base’s secre-tary with effect from 1 April. Barends also commended Ms Ogiena Francis on a job well done by acting voluntarily as the base’s secretary since 2012 in the absence of the unit secretary until the post was re-advertised.

The new officer commanding of AFB Makhado, Brig Gen André Barends (in front left), on 15 April not only introduced himself to the administrative staff of the base, but also welcomed the newest member on the base, Ms Chrestinah Mandule (standing to his right), who was appointed the base’s secretary. Also welcomed was Col Pine Pienaar (front right) who will act as Barends’s second in command. Left of Pienaar is Ms Ogiena Francis, who has been acting as the base’s secretary since 2012. Mining company Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) is urgently scurrying around to get their water licence back.

Last week, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DoW) sus-pended the integrated water-use licence for CoAL’s imminent Makhado Mine. The mine will be situated approximately 65km southwest of Musina and, if it becomes a reality, it will sur-round the indigenous Mudimele community.

According to CoAL, the li-cence’s suspension follows an appeal made to the department, which was submitted by the Vhembe Mineral Resources Fo-rum (VMRF) and other parties. VMRF’s appeal automatically suspended the water use licence in terms of the South African National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998).

After CoAL received the li-cence in January this year, they continued with plans to begin building the mine in the second half of this year. The licence was for 20 years’ use, and the suspen-sion could prove a major setback for the company.

CoAL said last week that they had expected this move from the VMRF. The firm added that they were in the process of preparing an urgent representation to the Minister of Water and Sanita-tion, Nomvula Mokonyane, to request that the licence remain in full force and effect, pending the final conclusion of the appeal by the Water Tribunal. CoAL CEO David Brown explained: “We are actively engaging with the department to resolve this appropriately.”

The VMRF, which consists of farmers and community mem-bers, said their hand was forced, despite the fact that they had

warned both CoAL and the DoW of the serious consequences of the withdrawal of 4.2 million litres of water per day from the Nzhelele catchment area to sustain mining activities at the Makhado Mine.

In the meantime, lifting the suspension is not the only chal-lenge CoAL faces to see the Makhado project becoming a reality.

In December 2014, the High Court granted an interdict in favour of the VMRF against the establishment of the mine. Fur-thermore, the VMRF is awaiting the outcome of their review application in the High Court against the rejection of their appeal against the environmental approval for the mine. No deci-sion is expected before next year. This will mean that the interdict remains in force and that CoAL’s hands will be tied for at least the duration of this year.

On Sunday, the 24-year-old Limpopo star, Clement “Clemour” Ngobeni, put in one of the most powerful performances yet during the first live television broadcast of The Voice South Africa.

The young man from Waterval blew away the competition judges and the audience with his bril-liant rendition of the Joan Osborne song, One of Us. The song was a fitting choice for the artist who grew up singing gospel music. In a very brave and bold move he added his own identity to the song, transforming it into a powerful message.

Clemour is currently studying Film and Tele-vision at the University of Johannesburg. He was invited to enter for the competition and in the first round competed against hundreds of other artists. During the blind auditions he managed to get three of the four judges to turn for him. He chose the Par-lotones’ frontman, Kahn Morbee, to be his coach.

A few weeks ago he passed with flying colours during the “sing-off” stage of the competition. He literally roared with enthusiasm while he performed

Katy Perry’s song Roar. Clemour describes his style as a “mash-up of electro-blues” and he feels he brings along “a different feel in South African music”.

During Sunday’s live performance, Clemour did not disappoint. In this part of the competition, each coach has four artists performing and then selects one to “save”. The remaining three need to rely on votes from their fans to proceed to the next round.

Coach Morbee commended Clemour and said that “listening to Clemour’s big powerful voice is like a reminder of singers from yesteryear.” Unfor-tunately for Clemour, he did not get a “free ticket” to the next round and now has to put his trust in the fans to help him go forward.

The voting ends on Thursday night (21st) at 22:00 and fans have three ways in which they can vote. The easiest way is to SMS Clemour’s unique number (09) to 33692. Fans can also download the WeChat app on their phones. Simply add the ID mnettv and vote up to 100 times for free. The final option is to register on the website, http://thevoicesa.dstv.com/ and vote. Users can also vote 100 times and registration is free.

Now’s the time to give Clemour your support

The Makhado Municipality said over the past week that they did not expect a recur-rence of the spate of power outages that struck the town two weeks ago.

Initially it was believed that the power outages that affected Louis Trichardt over the week-end of 8 to 9 April were due to the go-slow action by members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and

Independent Municipal and Al-lied Trade Union (IMATU). Last week, municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi confirmed that union members had embarked on a go-slow and that the two departments most affected were the departments of community (waste collection) and technical services (electricity). The go-slow followed union members’ unhappiness over the issue of the benchmarking of their salaries.

Bobodi said, however, that the recent power outage was caused by a broken earth conductor that eventually encroached on two live conductors, thereby causing a fault that tripped the power sup-ply line. “The problem was on the municipal side, causing a power failure of the central feeder that supplies the main town and CBD. The primary cause of the problem was fixed at that point of the faulty area,” Bobodi said.

Municipal News

The office of the auditor general (AG) is pleased with the way in which Musina Local Municipal-ity handled its finances in the 2015/16 financial year as per the set regulatory guidelines and procedures.

The office attested to this during the recent public hearing of the Municipal Public Account

Committee (MPAC) held in the council chamber of the Musina Municipality.

The MPAC is the committee of the munici-pal council that ensures that the finances of the municipality are handled well in terms of the set guidelines. Although the municipal chamber was filled to capacity, mainly by members of the public and stakeholders, only the municipal council, mu-nicipal manager and Mr Gert Odendaal from the

AG’s office took part in the deliberations.

“The office of the AG is pleased to know that Musina Local Munic-ipality has improved when it comes financial management. This is a great achievement,” Odendaal said.

While accounting to the public and MPAC, the municipal manager, Mr Johnson Matshivha, acknowledged that the municipality was work-ing hard to ensure that service delivery issues were prioritised. “De-spite the fact that we have limited resources and financial muscles, we are doing our best to achieve our set targets every year. We have the interests of our peo-ple at heart and we are enthused to do more,” Matshivha said.

Echoing equal sen-timents was the chair-person of the MPAC in Musina Municipality, Cllr Siyaphi Shirilele, who said that it pleased her to know that the municipal executives continued to be very re-sponsible when it came to issues of financial management. “This clearly indicates that the council members are on the right track to ensure good governance and responsible financial management.”

Education

Beneficiaries of the De Beers Teacher Subven-tion Programme visited the De Beers Venetia Mine last Friday. The Teacher Subvention Programme funds 56 additional educators and administrators for three local schools in Musina.

The schools are Mes-si na Primary School, Musina High School and Eric Louw High School. De Beers in-vested R3.3 million in-to the programme last year, which included school-fee subsidies for disadvantaged learners in the two fee-paying schools.

Last Friday, school g o v e r n i n g b o d i e s (SGBs) were treated to a tour of the open-pit viewpoint and the ore-processing plant at South Africa’s larg-est diamond mine. “De Beers recognizes the SGBs are important el-ements in the success-ful management of our local schools. As one of our social partners, it is

important for schools to understand our business and the inherent opportunities for employment, development and community investment that exist within the mining industry,” said Corporate Affairs Manager Josephine Pieters when commenting on the visit.

How the scam works: 1. A job seeker will respond to a job advert placed by the fraudsters.2. The job applicant will then be called by the so-called ‘recruiter’ who will ask

the applicant to pay a ‘fee’ to ensure his application is successful.3. The applicant is then instructed to pay this fee, usually via an electronic

payment method. 4. The applicant will then either be given false information about a job interview

or never hear from the person again.

A job seeker responds to a fraudulent job advertisement

(usually on websites or by word of mouth).

The “recruiter” will then contact the applicant to pay a recruitment

fee in order to ensure that the application is successful.

The applicant is then requested to pay the fee, usually via an electronic payment method.

In desperate times people will do anything to get work.

Scam fraudsters know this and will use various ways to try and steal your money. Recently there have been a number of scams regarding employment at De Beers Venetia Mine. Innocent job seekers have fallen prey to these scammers and fraudsters who advertise jobs and request a finder’s fee.

Ensure the recruiting company is legitimate: a registered recruiter will not ask for a fee for someone to get registered on a database. Never pay a recruiter who promises employment or to be invited for an interview.

Hokkienuus

Last year, Ali, who also plays for the school’s first rugby team, was invited to be part of the Eagles Invitational U/19 team that participated in the Dubai tournament.

Hierdie liga word elke jaar aangebied by Laer-skool Pietersburg Noord in Polokwane.

015 516 5151.

Laerskool Louis Trichardt se O/10-netbalspan het ‘n tweede plek verower in die Super 8-skoleliga. Voor, van links na regs, is mev. Elzabe Stewart, Kohani Munzhelele, Mia Alberts en Mulweli Muthala. Agter is Elri Dreyer, Jasmin Louwe, Naledi Maluna, Janie Potgieter en Lutenda Mudau.

Triegies wys hul slag in Super 8

I am ... The Way the Truth and the Life

The most agonizing problem about the assurance of salvation is not the problem

of whether the objective facts of Christianity are true (God exists, Christ is God, He died for sinners, He rose from the dead, He saves forever all who believe, etc.). Those facts are crucial for our faith, but the really agonising problem of assurance is whether I personally am saved by those facts.

What makes this agonizing is that there are people who think they have saving faith, but don’t. For example, read Matt. 7:21-23.

So, the agonizing question for many is: Do I really have saving faith? Is my faith real? Am I deceiving myself?

There are necessary life changes that show the reality of faith (2 Cor. 5:17). We should begin by realizing there is an objective warrant for resting in God’s forgiveness of our sins, and there is a subjective warrant for assurance that our sins are forgiven. The objective warrant is the finished work of Christ on the cross (Heb. 10:14). The subjec-tive warrant is our faith, which bears fruit in “being sanctified”.

Saving faith has two parts. When you hear or read what God has done for sinners on the cross and through the resurrection of Jesus, this appears to your heart as a great and glorious thing in and of itself, even before you are sure you are saved by it. Read 2 Cor. 4:4+6. This happens as a work of the Spirit of God through the preaching of the gospel.

Firstly: faith is warranted resting in this glorious gospel for our own salvation. For those who “see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ”, their resting is warranted.

What this means, practically, is firstly that we should continually look to the cross and the work of God in Christ because this is where God makes the light of the gospel shine.

Secondly, we should continually pray for God to enlighten the eyes of our hearts (Eph.1:18). Thirdly, we should express our trust in Christ by loving each other (1 John 3:14). Assurance is a precious gift of God. Let us pray for each other that it will abound among us.

“Nee hel, Daisy. Noudat dit later lig word, soek ek jou warm lyf hier langs my in die oggend! Ek drink tot alleen koffie ... Los nou al hierdie New Age foefies en lê liewers lepel met my!” murmureer hy. Daisy glimlag net ongestoord en geheimsinnig.

“Dis my hemelsake, Bernard,” verduidelik sy.

“More, mooiste!

Enige man se

Haar man se Bloubulblou oë blits, maar hy sê niks.

“Daar was foto’s by, Bernard. En dis nie ge-Photoshop nie.”

Daar is stilte.

Verstaan jy mooi, my liefste vrou?”

Bernard praat stadig en sag en duidelik. Daisy skrik haarself bleker as haar wit meditasie-uit-rusting.

Dis ‘n klap in my gesig. Nou - read my lips: ek stel in GEEN ander vrou belang nie.

Julle is afgeneem by At se Gat op Alldays? Twee keer.

“Dis heeltemal waar, Daise. Ek ken haar baie goed. Haar naam is Alicia. Dit was besigheid. Persoonlike besigheid.”

loor hul aanskoulike wedstryd nael skraaps 10-12.

Spanne pak mekaar weer ná vyf jaar
