The origins of JIRAAt the CEO Fireside Chat, Atlassian co-Founders and co-CEOs Scott Farquhar and Mike Cannon-Brookes offered some insight into how JIRA was born.

As they began to work together, they realized how difficult it could be to collaborate, even when it was just the two of them - a challenge that has grown as the Atlassian team has.

To work effectively and efficiently together, Farquhar and Cannon-Brookes realized that what they needed was the right software to help them work as a team.

This is where the Atlassian passion for teamwork originated, and was the motivation behind Atlassian’s first product: JIRA.

Latest release: 7.2.3

It’s the #1 software development tool used by agile teams, and Atlassian is continuously working to improve it even further. So what’s new in JIRA Software to help teams innovate and collaborate more efficiently?

Boards

Boards are fundamental to the way agile teams work and a great way to visualise the progress of a project. That visualisation will soon be clearer than ever.

JIRA Software cards have been redesigned, making organization even simpler. As your projects and ideas grow, so do the number of cards on your board – so Atlassian is introducing Kanban backlogs to improve the organisation of your agile boards.

With a specific space for backlog items, there’s more space on your board for the issues you’re currently working on. You lower the risk of ideas getting lost. The dedicated backlog becomes your area for planning, and it’s easier than ever to move issues between statuses.

Portfolio

A good plan is all about visibility and communication, but it can be difficult to keep a plan up to date and in sync with reality. By the time a plan is in place, some aspect of a project is likely to have already changed.

This is where Portfolio for JIRA comes in. Atlassian is introducing live plans: easy to set up and always up to date, reflecting changes in estimate and scope in real time. Where previously it would take up to 40 steps to create a roadmap to visualise the scope and work involved in a project, plans can now be done created in just 5 steps.

5 million users are now using Bitbucket in the cloud. Both Atlassian Summit keynotes demonstrated why that number is so high.

Git Large File Support

Git Large File Support is one of Bitbucket’s most popular features, bringing the tool unique capabilities. Thanks to Git LFS, users can upload large files 3x faster than they’d otherwise be able to.

That jumps to 10x faster when uploading changes to a file, thanks to the way Git LFS breaks down the file and uploads only the changed parts.

This increase in speed has a huge impact on the productivity of teams and has proved to be a major time saver, supporting all file types, from graphics, videos, audio, documents and more.

Bitbucket Pipelines

Bitbucket Pipelines bring you modern build pipelines.

Previously, when building and shipping monolithic applications, teams would need hundreds of programmers to build one, single thing. This isn’t the case any longer: with new microservices, new programming languages, and a shift to the cloud, the structure of teams has changed. This means the way teams work has needed to change with it.

Configuration as code.

Bring together your code and your configurations. Bitbucket Pipelines is built using industry standard Docker containers, meaning it doesn’t matter what programming language you use. Featuring over 10,000 pre-built environments, it becomes easy to manage versions alongside code, and it makes it simple to get started from the command line.

Native to Bitbucket.

With Pipelines, you can see status of a build before starting work on it. That means no more working on code that’s already broken; it also ensures you don’t break the build for others before merging by seeing the status.

Infinite scale.

When you need to configure capacity ahead of time, it’s difficult to configure enough build capacity, and this leads to wasted time while teams wait. Pipelines is designed to solve this it will scale up instantly when developers need it, and scale down when they don’t.3 4

With every new release of Confluence, users can organize and navigate more easily than ever. New features like drag and drop organization in pages and spaces mean you’ll soon be able to navigate 3x faster than ever before!

Confluence is also bringing users more and more dynamic content. At the Summit, Atlassian announced that this will include live data, a range of file types, live links from JIRA Software, and the ability to edit Marketplace Add-ons directly from a Confluence page.

With the upcoming release of Confluence 6.0, users can look forward to a host of new features.

Concurrent editing

This long awaited feature allows teams to take their collaboration to the next level.

You can now see who else is editing the page, as well as their real time changes, with all of your layouts, macros and the other editing features you love still available.

Your changes and edits are now also automatically saved and synced – all you need to do is hit publish when the time is right.

Shared drafts

In contrast to the way Confluence previously created drafts, where if you edited a page but didn’t save it would create a personal draft, visible only to you, Confluence now creates a shared draft whenever anyone edits a page. All page editors will work on this same draft. The shared draft will exist until the page is published.

The move to shared drafts does mean that personal drafts will no longer be editable, but you can still access the content at Profile > Drafts. 6

Copy page hierarchies

This is another popular feature request, bringing users the ability to copy a page and all of its child pages in one step.

This means it’s quick and simple to duplicate existing content, kick off new projects, take a snapshot of important pages, and much more. You can also choose the location you want to copy a page hierarchy to – no more manually moving copied pages to the right space. With options to modify page titles and control what’s included in new pages, organising your Confluence spaces has never been easier.

You can also delete a page and its child pages if you need to. Previously you would need to delete each page individually, so this is a handy feature for quick mass edits.

It’s ideal for cleaning up old content. Confluence will warn you of any incoming links, so you’ll even be able to tidy up links before you delete.

Confluence mobile

More good news for Android fans! As with JIRA Software, Confluence for Android is on its way.

Atlassian Team PlaybookAll teams need to be part of the same visible, end to end service. A great team will have the right products and the right practices in place.

That’s no small feat, but it’s the key to effective teamwork.

This is why Atlassian is introducing Team Health Monitors and Team Plays, together making up Atlassian’s Team Playbook.

Team Health Monitors

Team Health Monitors are designed to identify the most common issues your teams face – and identify them before they cause real problems. These are desigend for Project Teams, Leadership Teams, and Service Teams.

Assess your team against eight attributes common amongst healthy, high-performing teams, and monitor your progress over time.

Team Plays

The second aspect of the Team Playbook, Atlassian is introducing over 20 different “plays”: exercises and techniques developed to help fix common problems and assist teams in making a substantial amount of progress over a short period of time.

At the Summit, Team Playbooks were described as “one of the most impactful things Atlassian is doing”, and it’s proving transformative for teams.

The importance of teamsWith each new product release, Atlassian is proving its dedication to improving teamwork. Finishing his keynote speech, Scott Farquhar emphasised why this is so important to Atlassian: because great teamwork leads to incredible outcomes.
