Classic Glass Corvette Club General Meeting Minutes, July 9, 2013

President: James Swope had to work tonight, so Past President/Director Greg Brooks called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

Greg welcomed all to the meeting and then immediately called on Mana Swope to talk about the Title 1 School, Powers Ferry

James Swope

Harriette Majoros reported that there were no additions or corrections sent to her regarding the minutes of the last meeting and so asked for a motion to accept as printed in the last newsletter. Gary Griffin moved and John Pardus 2nd. Passed.

Elementary backpacks and school supplies project for this year. Mana showed us the backpacks that come in four colors this year and samples were passed around. There are 60 again this year. She thanked Calvin Cruce, Harriette & Bill Majoros & Larry & Sherry Yon who each gave $100 to pay for the backpacks. (Mana & James were the other couple who contributed.) The cost was $412. She passed out two colored slips listing the supplies as well as passed around sign-up sheets, asking that people take a colored sheet (one or the other), buy the entire list of supplies and bring those items to the August general meeting. If you do not want to buy, she will gladly take your money and buy for you.

The lists this year are very realistic and will cover the grades K thru 5. The school administration is very excited about CGCC helping out their underprivileged students. Mana urged folks to take advantage of the school supply sales as they come up from now until August as well as coupons. Steve Wilder brought up a coupon and refund card he had to add to the pot. She also pointed out this is a most important charitable project that has great impact on kids.

Club Picnic will be held on July 13, this coming Saturday. Bring desserts, sides, chips, your own soft drinks. The club will provide the food – pork, chicken, slaw, beans & potato salad - from BBQ Street which has been ordered by Larry Yon. Take advantage of taking a picture of your car in front of the remains of the furnace. Bring serving utensils and cut your pies/cakes ahead of time. Those who have volunteered to set up come between 9:30 & 10. All others 10:30.

Events you many have missed were: the June 15 Greg Wyatt Tour. There were 7-8 cars from Corvette Atlanta that joined our 11-12 cars. Lunch was in Summerville. The Dunwoody 4th of July Parade got off between rain showers and was a VIP riders only parade so there was a very limited number of cars in the event.

Then there was SVS on June 22. A lot of work was done by a lot of folks to make this a success. Wonderful weather for the day! 138 cars registered for the event. There were a few shirt issues that are being worked on. Bob Zajicek will have a blast email sent out regarding who did and did not get a shirt and proper size. There are a few XL’s in stock. Day’s Chevrolet had a great day too selling 8 cars.

Barry Tomlinson wanted to thank all of those who gave to make the silent auction portion such a success. Don & Cindy Pope, John Iroff, John Ivankovich from Buy-a-vette.com, & Days Chevrolet as the biggest donors. It netted over $1000.

She then reported that for a change, we have no one in the sick bay, etc.

Cindy Cowart

Treasurer’s report was given by Cindy Cowart. This can be viewed on line behind the firewall. Reggie Martin moved for acceptance and John Pardus 2nd. Passed

Cindy went on to explain some of the SVS monies that were shown on the slide.

VP of Activities Bob Zajicek was next up telling us that on June 26 there was the first “Lessons Learned” session after SVS and that the next one would be on July 31 here at Tavern 120 at 6:00 and that it is open for anyone to attend.

Upcoming events include Tomcat Photos

on July 27 at the Aviation Museum in Marietta. We will be meeting event manager Calvin Cruce here at Tavern 120 at 2:00 p.m. and caravan over. The cost is $10 per car. Bring your camera and be ready to take advantage of the afternoon sun.

August 3 will be the Old Soldiers Parade in Alpharetta and so far only 4-5 cars have signed up. Need at least 8. This year there will be a special route for the Vettes to leave and the police are aware of it. This hopefully will eliminate the biggest complaint we have had in the past.

September 14 will be the October Parade in Helen – more for the weekend than the parade but a fun time. This fills up fast so get on the list. The Country Inn and Suites has 18 rooms reserved in the club’s name.

Alan Cowart placed flyers on the tables about a car show on September 7. This is not a club sponsored event and is the same day as our VetteStock at Bailey’s which benefits the NCM.

Chris Reed

There is $70 in the pot and was won by Ken Cearns. The first ticket drawn got no response. There was then a drawing for a C-6 plate and that was won by Rita Brooks.

and for the first time, there was a public touch, feel and sit in 5 of the cars and they were a great hit for the weekend. The groundbreaking was most well attended by local and state dignitaries. The BOD of the NCM has authorized an additional 10 Million dollars to finish up the first segment of the track/park. Only track in the world where the curves etc. of Le Mans can be practiced and it will be the home track of the Corvette Racing Team. Clubs will be able to buy a day or track time once done. Clubs that have purchased an acre will get a day. We have only purchased as a club, ½ acre although 2 members have purchased entire acres. One club has purchased 4 acres and one person 5 acres at $15K each.

Doug then told that the Labor Day event will include the Corvette Hall of Fame inductions of which Johnny O’Connell will be one of the inductees. He also said that we are just over one (1) year out from the 2014 Caravan so start to make your plans to attend now.

He also had 3 give-a-ways from the ground breaking.

VP at Large Tonie Etter is absent but in her place was ‘I can’t read your lips if you don’t stand up” Shirley Huffman. No one admitted to a new car so she went right into the 50/25/25 drawing. Marsha’s great cookie recipe Chewy-crisp and intensely almond-y, here's a version of the King Arthur Bakery's best-selling cookie: the Almond Bianchi. These were the cookies Marsha Zajicek baked for the picnic and many of you wanted the recipe

10 ounces almond paste 1 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 large egg whites, lightly beaten 1/4 teaspoon gluten-free almond extract

Confectioners' sugar or glazing sugar, for topping

Directions 1) Preheat the oven to 325°F. Lightly grease (or line with parchment) two baking sheets.

2) Blend the almond paste, sugar, and salt until the mixture becomes uniformly crumbly; this is best done in a stand mixer.

3) Add the egg whites gradually, while mixing, to make a smooth paste.

4) Stir in the flavorings.

5) Scoop the dough by heaping tablespoons onto the prepared pans.

6) Sprinkle the cookies heavily with confectioners' sugar, then use three fingers to press an indentation into the center of each cookie.

7) Bake the cookies for 20 to 25 minutes, until they're brown around the edges. Remove them from the oven, and let them cool right on the pan.

Yield: 21 cookies.

Webmaster Chaz Cone is not present.

Tonie Etter

Chevrolet went to Jim Madrid.

There was then an auction for a $200 off coupon to Discount Tire good on a set of 4 tires, good for 6 months and the high bidder was Tom Wilder with $100.

Wrap Up – Greg said it is not too early to start thinking about the fall elections. He encouraged folks to come to a BOD meeting to see what transpires. Next BOD meeting is on August 6 and the General Meeting will be on August 13.

Thanked the wait staff. Lauren will no longer be with us on Tues and she will be working different days.

Ken Cearns stood up to thank all of those folks who put in a lot of time in the sun parking the cars at SVS which made things easier for the judges.

Meeting adjourned at 8:32 p.m.

Respectfully submitted

Celebrating Celebrating the 4th Dunwoody style CGCC member Denny Shortal is a city council member in Dunwoody. This year we accepted his invitation to participate in their large July 4th parade.

The persistent rain held off long enough for 6 cars to drive the 2.2 mile route.

Even though the crowds were down greatly they were enthusiastic and we had a fun time.

Thanks for the invitation Denny.

After the parade we were treated to a delicious BBQ lunch.

Cindy Cowart, our "Decorating Queen" did not let the threat of rain deter her. She goes all out every parade.

Denny Shortal certainly enjoyed the parade watchers along the route.

Our VIP cars were all together at the front of the parade.

School Supplies for Powers Ferry Elementary School

Hey, folks, The first day of school is rapidly approaching, but many families can’t afford the extra expense of school supplies. However, with your generosity, we can help relieve this added financial burden for some. I'm hoping that you will join us in filling backpacks with school supplies for a local elementary school again this year. We've selected Powers Ferry Elementary School, located not far from the 120 Tavern. Like last year's school, Powers Ferry Elementary is a Title One school, which means it has a large population of children from low-income families. We've purchased 60 really nice backpacks, but instead of asking the club to fund the purchase, Sherry and Larry Yon, Harriette and Bill Majoros, and Calvin Cruce helped James and me buy them. I'm asking each of you to help by purchasing school supplies so that we can fill up the backpacks. While last year's list may have seemed a "tad" excessive, this year's list is much more reasonable. Since a couple of the grades had just a handful of items, I thought it would be more equitable to create a list with every item from their school supply list (below): Most needed items:

• 3-4 dozen #2 pencils (Ticonderoga, if possible) • 2 boxes of 24-count Crayola crayons • 4 large or 8 small glue sticks • 1 pack Crayola colored pencils or Crayola

markers • 2 dry erase markers • 2 hard cover composition notebooks (no spiral

notebooks, please) • 2-3 packs wide-ruled loose-leaf paper • 2 pocket folders with fasteners • 4 pocket folders without fasteners • 2 bottles hand sanitizer • 2 canisters antibacterial disinfecting wipes • 3-4 boxes of tissues • 1 box of Ziploc baggies (gallon or sandwich)

Other supplies needed: • Scissors • Pens (red, purple, blue - no black) • Pencil-top erasers • "Block" erasers • Highlighters • Pencil box or pouch

That's it! Thanks to each of you who took a school supply list (or two or three!) or donated money at the last meeting or at the club picnic! If you would like to help (or want to do more), please do not hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email. And if you don't have the time, I don't mind doing the shopping for you (in other words, cash and checks accepted!). Please bring all school supplies to the next club meeting. If you won't be at the meeting, please let me know - we can work something out. Thanks again,

Mana Swope

Let’s build it!

A double winner at the NCM was a 60th Anniversary celebration of the Corvette and a ground-breaking event for the new Motor Sports Park. Both Tadge Juechter and Doug Fehan stirred the passions of the crowd in the two different parts of the Corvette lifestyle.

Photos by Calvin Cruce

People made pictures of the new C7’s from every conceivable angle.

For the first time people were able to touch and sit in the new Stingray’s.

Local and state politicians along with Wendell Strode, NCM Board Members, and Corvette Racing’s Doug Fehan, tossed the symbolic first shovels of dirt.

A green flag was used to start the earth moving equipment on the site.

A larger than expected crowd watched the ground breaking ceremonies.

Bowling Green Mayor Bruce Wilkerson holds a “Let’s build it” sign to the delight of everyone present.

Details about how you can accessorize the C7 have been vague at best. Here is a dealership LPO card which details some of the accessories that are coming from Chevrolet for the 2014 Corvette Stingray.

When placing an order for the Corvette Stingray, buyers select options and accessories from a list of Regular Production Options or RPOs. But there is also a list of LPOs which stands for Limited Production Options. These are preordered options that include a single accessory or a collection of accessories that are part of a special package. LPOs are usually dealer installed prior to customer delivery unless otherwise noted.

Examples of the available LPOs include Stingray logo floor mats, door still plates, center caps and indoor and outdoor car covers. Included on the list are the 5-spoke chrome Torque wheels and the 5-piece luggage kit. One item that isn’t listed is the rumored Cyber

Gray Grille which is assumed will replace the front mounted black carbon flash grille.

There will be an Exterior Trim Kit which swaps out all the black Carbon Flash vents – quarter vent, hood vent, fender vent and taillamp scoops for those painted Cyber Gray.

A number of spoiler options will be available as well. For the non-Z51 cars, you can get a body color painted wing instead of the standard black, or you can get the Z51 full-length spoiler in either carbon flash or full body color too.

A Stingray Appearance package for the Coupe comes with a crossed-flags underhood liner, indoor car cover and chrome center caps.

Talk with your sales specialist about these new options.

Popular summer picnic a success again

The desert table was a very popular place.

The line formed quickly for the BBQ lunch.

Even though rain was in the forecast, it held off until after the festivities were over. CGCC’ers who did attend were treated to an enjoyable time with old and new friends and some great BBQ.

As good as the BBQ was, it was the consensus that the deserts provided by members was a definite highlight. In fact, you may have found one popular cookie recipe elsewhere in this newsletter.

Thanks to everyone who worked to make this the success it was.

After participating in numerous parades, Nancy Holman had a bright idea. She decided to offer trunk covers to CGCC parade goers like the one she made for herself and has used successfully many times.

C5 and C6 covers are currently available in several different fabric designs. Nancy can make any size or use any fabric design.

An added benefit is that it

Track Rental Reservations Now Open

The NCM Motorsports Park is now accepting reservations for track rentals for September – December 2014 as well as for the full 2015 calendar year. Early registrants will receive first priority date selections and discounted track rental rates, along with several other “perks” for stepping forward and getting the ball rolling.

Member Care Center

Phil Lewis had kidney stones blasted out on July 16

Harry and Margie Wilson are recovering from glass cuts suffered in a wreck in W. Virginia. The car is in for repair.

If your convertible top is not dirty, just rinse it thoroughly at least once a month with a strong jet of clear water. If your convertible top is dirty, use a non-detergent-based convertible top cleaner followed by your convertible top protectant.

Use a very soft bristle scrub brush for cleaning your convertible top. If you can rub the brush across the back of your hand without scratching your skin, it's safe to use on your convertible top.

Do not use a cloth, chenille-covered sponge or lamb's wool mitt on your convertible top, as they will leave lint. Make sure you rinse the top thoroughly with a stiff stream of water to remove all of the dirt, grime and suds from your convertible top cleaner. After washing, dry your convertible fabric or vinyl top using a Microfiber Drying Towel. The best method is to use the towel to blot up the water.

Do not use a terry cloth towel or diaper to dry your top. They will leave lint on fabric convertible tops. The Microfiber Drying Towels will also work well on clear vinyl windows.

IMPORTANT: A CONVERTIBLE TOP MUST BE THOROUGHLY DRY BEFORE USING YOUR CONVERTIBLE TOP PROTECTANT!

Keep your convertible top protected like you do your paint. For best results, protect your fabric, cloth or canvas convertible top at least 3-4 times per year and your vinyl convertible top as often as every 4-5 weeks.

Fabric, cloth or canvas convertible tops tend to attract lint, dust, pollen and other things that fly around the air and find a home on your convertible top. This can look especially bad on a black convertible top! To keep your convertible top looking sharp, keep a lint roller handy and when your top is dry, just run the roller over the top. You will be surprised how this simple step will bring back that crisp new look.
