Year of the Family

Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these

least brothers of mine, you did for me.

—Matthew 25:40

“We have all known the long loneliness,” wrote the

great social activist Dorothy Day, “and we have

learned that the only solution is love and that love

comes with community.” If we look for God only in

rarefied moments of prayer and beauty, then we’ll

almost entirely miss him. For God is in us, whom he

calls the least of his brothers. “We cannot love God

unless we love each other, and to love we must know

each other,” wrote Day. “We know Him in the break-

ing of bread, and we know each other in the breaking

of bread, and we are not alone anymore.” So look for

God at the table—in church, at home, in the soup

kitchen—anywhere there is, as Day put it, a crust of

bread. Taken from: http://www2.loyolapress.com

Harmony Day

Last week, a note went out about Harmony Day which

we are celebrating on March 17th. We are inviting

parents to share their own cultural stories by

facilitating group sessions with students of 40 minutes

duration. If you are interested, please return the form

on the note asap to assist with the organisation.

Part of the activities on the day will also be around the

‘National Day Against Bullying’ which has a particular

focus at this time of year across all schools in Australia.

Also, being March 17th, it would be amiss of us if we

didn’t consider St Patrick’s Day. T/1 Room 14 will be

presenting an assembly on St Patrick’s Day and we

hope to have some Irish dancing at the end of

assembly from the ‘Rince Na Eirann’ (means: we dance

with our hearts) group featuring our own student, Ciara

Shakes. It will certainly be a great day of activities,

learning and fun for your children here at Holy Family.

You are also invited to join us for parts of the day which

is outlined in the note, which includes joining the staff

for morning tea at 10.30am. We hope some of you are

able to make it.

Like the Green Tree Frog, I grow and change.

Like the Bush Bee,

I can work with others and on my own to be successful.

Like the Eagle, I see what I

need to do to achieve my

goal and take responsibility.

Like the Crocodile,

I can overcome challenges and keep

going when things get

tough.

Like the Dolphin, I am free to

develop my own ideas and take

risks.

Like the Green Ant, I use what I know and

what others know to

build meaning.

Like the Tata Lizard I can become a learning detective, searching

for answers or clues to my own or

others questions.

Cultural Dress or Wear Orange

We also encourage students to come in their tradition cultural dress for the day. We will have a parade after

recess for students to show their dress to the school and perhaps explain parts of the attire to the audience.

For Harmony Day, students can also wear something orange as a symbol of coming together as a community

against bullying. If they have neither, school uniform would be the best alternative.

Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews

This year, we will hold our interviews in the week beginning 27th March. More information will follow next

week.

Courtyard Upgrade – Update

Last week we met with contractors who have the tender documents for the courtyard upgrade. They viewed

the site to more clearly understand the scope of works. Joining us for the meeting were the WHS and

infrastructure consultants from the Catholic Education Office. Tenders are due back this Thursday (tomorrow)

and we hope to award the contract soon after. Works need to be completed by the end of May so we should

be full steam ahead within the next few weeks.

As part of the new works, we will have some of the old pavers being removed. Rather than having them

thrown out, we hope some parents might be interested in picking them up themselves and finding a use for

them.

Disco (From last week)

The on again, off again disco is back on! Kev, our DJ, has had a cancellation and we are good to go for this

Friday, March 17th. Thank you to our P&F for being so flexible and committed to make this happen for your

children. Some points to remember on the evening:

that supervision of your children is your responsibility at the disco, not school staff. Students are not to

be dropped off without a supervising adult.

That you remind your children they need to walk on the concrete paths

That students need to remain in the courtyard areas

Toilets are not an area for play

Car Park Pick Up and Drop Off

Last week, I received an email from a parent with concerns around the pickup zone in the afternoon. I cannot

stress enough that student safety is an absolute priority at these times due to traffic. Therefore, please make

sure you follow correct procedures by either waiting in the queue or parking the car and coming to collect your

child. Please do not ‘double park’ and call your child over. This is a particularly unsafe method of collecting

students.

Hot Cross ‘Bundraiser’

Brumby’s Karama have a fundraiser that we are happy to support. Below is from part of their letter to us:

As a fundraiser, Brumby’s KARAMA will sell you packs of 6 Hot Cross Buns in the following flavours:

Traditional, Fruitless, Choc Hazelnut and Double Choc for only $5.00. You can sell these packs at Brumby’s

recommended price of $ 6.90. This means you will make $1.90 profit per pack sold.

A Message from the Principal ...

If you are interested in this at all, please place your

order at the front office with the payment and we will

pass onto Brumby’s.

Orders will close Friday, 24th March.

God Bless,

Shane Donohue

Office for our Easter Raffle.

SCHOOL COUNCELLOR

Just a reminder that our school counsellor, Suzie, is based at Holy Family each

Tuesday and this is a free service provided to students.

Referral forms can be collected from the office.

HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE

We would like to notify parents that we have had a case of hand-foot-mouth disease in our school. Hand-foot-mouth disease is a common mild childhood illness, typically affecting children under the age of ten, which is caused by a moderately contagious virus. Adults may also become infected with the virus. If your child is affected by this disease please notify the school. We ask that you keep your child home for the first few days of the infec-tion (until the blisters have dried up) to reduce the spread of the virus. There is an information sheet attached to the newsletter if you would like further information about the disease.

Be Aware

Holy Family

Catholic Primary School

has students with severe

allergic

reactions to foods.

Please be mindful when

packing recess and lunch

boxes.

Lunches

We have noticed that some students

are arriving at school without any

food. Please ensure your child has

been catered for appropriately for

food during the school day. A lack of

food does hinder concentration and

therefore the child will not perform at

their best during the day.

My name is Bronwyn Williams, mother of Luke in Miss Lorenzo’s class,

Emmi-Jay in Mrs Garrick’s class and little Sebastian attending Rainbow’s

day care.

This year I'm participating in the WORLD'S GREATEST SHAVE. The big day

will take place on the 4th of April at Tommy Guns barber shop in

Casuarina Square. I'm looking for sponsors to help me raise much

needed funds for the Leukemia Foundation.

I will be shaving my hair this year and will also be donating it to

another fantastic cause, ‘The Princess Charlotte Alopecia’ program.

My hair will be made into wigs for young children with Alopecia, a

condition that causes hair loss from the scalp and in some cases, all

areas of the body, for which there is no known cure.

If you would like to help me raise much needed funds for the
