Lucerne’s fortification – the Musegg WallThe 14 th century was a turbulent time of power struggles. Lucerne – which haddeclared independence from Habsburg and joined the Swiss Federation in 1332 –built the fortification to protect the city from invaders. The Musegg Wall,built between 1370 and 1442, is part of the historical city fortification that once had30 towers. What remains of the wall today is 870 meters long, nine meters talland 1.5 meters thick. There are now nine towers, four of which are open tothe public during the summer months. From here there is an impressive view ofthe city, the lake and the Alpine panorama. This tour includes a trip back in time tolearn about Lucerne’s history in the Middle Ages. The guide will also explainhow the wall was restored without harming the rare plants and animals that livenear this national landmark. Unique collection of old tower clocks (1526 to1820) in Lucerne‘s clock tower. Experience the huge clock face and rhythmicmovements of the 9-meter pendulum.

Lucerne and wineThat wine has always been a great tradition in Lucerne is evident from the nameof one of the town’s most important market squares, namely the Wine Market.The town’s population could enjoy not only Lucerne and Swiss wines, but alsointernational vintages. While the incomparable Paul Kleecollection of 125 paintings, water-colours and drawings documents every periodof the artist’s creative work, the collection of Picasso paintings concentrateson Picasso’s creativity after 1938. In addition there is a whole series of importantpictures and drawings by more than 20 world-famous masters of the 19 thand 20 th centuries (including Cézanne, Monet, Matisse, Miró) on display. City walk with Lion Monument and Glacier GardenThe Glacier Garden is a significant natural monument with its huge glacial pot-holes and erratic blocks from the Ice Age, fossilized shells and palm leavesfrom 20 million years ago. City walk with Lion Monument and Bourbaki PanoramaThe Bourbaki Panorama by Edouard Castres is a testament to the public’sappetite for visual sensations. The huge circular painting, 10 meters in height anda circumference of 112 meters dating back to 1881, is one of the most visuallyarresting works in the history of the media and, with its call to humanity, depicts anexceptional event in history. People in the 18 th and 19 th centuries were, as today,driven by a craving to be whisked away to foreign parts by the medium of theoptical illusion.
