The preterite tense:The preterite tense is like the simple past tense in English.

It is used to talk about completed actions in the past. E.g.

- I went to France / Fui a Francia- I played football / Jugué al fútbol- I ate paella / Comí paella

It is used to talk about things that had a definite beginning and end. So, for example, you wouldn’t use it to say ‘I used to play football’, but you would use it to say ‘I played football’.
