Advent (like Lent) includes an element of penance in the sense of preparing, quieting and disciplining our hearts for the

full joy of Christmas. This penitential dimension is expressed not only through the color violet, but also through the restrained manner

of decorating the church and altar.

MAKE STRAIGHT HIS PATHSToday’s readings are a source of great comfort and strength for us. In the first reading from Isaiah, we hear, “Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs…” (Isa 40:10). We are reminded that Jesus, whose birth we anticipate, truly is the Good Shepherd. He comes to us not as a harsh judge, but as a humble, loving shepherd who guides us, cares for us, nurtures us and protects us.

While comforting, our readings also challenge us to use this holy time to ready our hearts to receive Jesus. We do not wait passively, like when we stand in line – we actively anticipate our Savior’s coming and “make straight his paths.” We must ask ourselves, how can we prepare the way for the Lord – in our personal lives, with our family,

in our relationship with God, with our coworkers and friends? This Advent, we are being called to recommit to “conducting ourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and

hastening the coming of God” (2 Pet 3:12).

A TIME OF ACTIVE WAITINGAs we move through the Advent season as one family of faith, let us remember that this is a time of active preparation. As Christians, we are always expecting the coming of the Lord. Jesus came, he will definitively come, and he is coming even now – for the risen Lord wants to take up residence in us today. Advent is a preparation for that coming. We are getting ourselves ready to receive the Christ who wants, even now, to be born in us (Getting the House in Order, Bishop Robert Barron).

HAGAN RECTOS SUS SENDEROSLas lecturas de hoy nos brindan gran consuelo y fortaleza. En la primera lectura de Isaías, escuchamos: “Como un pastor, apacentará su rebaño; llevará en sus brazos a los corderitos recién nacidos...” (Isa 40:10). Se nos recuerda que Jesús, cuyo nacimiento anticipamos, es verdaderamente el Buen Pastor. No viene a nosotros como un juez duro, sino como un pastor humilde y amoroso que nos guía, nos cuida, nos nutre y nos protege.

Aunque son un consuelo, las lecturas también nos desafían a usar este tiempo santo para preparar nuestro corazón para recibir a Jesús. No esperamos indiferentemente, como cuando esperamos en alguna fila–anticipamos activamente la venida de nuestro Salvador y “hacemos rectos sus senderos.” Debemos preguntarnos, ¿cómo podemos preparar

el camino para el Señor, en nuestra vida, con nuestra familia, en nuestra relación con Dios, con nuestros compañeros de trabajo y amigos? Este Adviento, “piensen con

cuánta santidad y entrega deben vivir ustedes esperando y apresurando el advenimiento del día del Señor” (2 Pd 3:12).

Como cristianos, siempre estamos esperando la venida del Señor. Jesús vino, definitivamente vendrá, y viene incluso ahora, porque hoy, el Señor resucitado quiere establecerse dentro de nosotros. El Adviento es una preparación para la llegada de Dios. Nos estamos preparando para recibir al Cristo que quiere, incluso ahora, nacer en nosotros (Ordenando el Hogar, obispo Robert Barron).
