Alfred Oscar Ludwig (1906-1986)
Descriptive Summary: Repository: The Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute Call No.: MS-N026 Creator: Alfred Oscar Ludwig Title: Papers and reprints retained by Alfred Oscar Ludwig Quantity: 11 archival boxes Acquisition Information: Upon Dr. Ludwig’s death in 1986, Dr. Sanford Gifford contacted his widow, Julie Jepson, and she donated the filing cabinets to the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute archive. Processing Information: The collection was originally stored in four filing cabinets by Dr. Ludwig in his office. On the fourth floor of The Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, the materials remained locked in the cabinet for nearly 30 years until the lock was finally broken. All materials in the collection have remained alphabetically arranged, as Dr. Ludwig originally organized them. All folders in the collection are listed as they had been labeled by Dr. Ludwig. Documents have been re-housed into acid free folders and archival boxes. The last series contains reprints from unprocessed materials, added at the end because of their relationship with Dr. Ludwig’s collection. These have been organized alphabetically as well, but not mixed into the original order of the filing cabinet drawers. The main portion of the collection has been processed by Terra Bianchi. Use and Access:
No restrictions apply, but researchers must first contact the institute’s archivist, librarian, or director for an appointment.
Scope and Content: Materials in this collection consist of records kept and collected by Dr. Alfred Ludwig throughout his career. The collection holds personal notes, typescripts, and letters relating to lectures, speeches, publishing, and other correspondence. It also contains a vast majority of reprints from journals, newsletters, bulletins, pamphlets, and guides ranging from the 1940s to 1960s.
