Well done to all of Team Littlehampton who competed at the Sussex County Championships in March. It was our most suc- cessful year to date with a massive 87% of swims inside PBs. We had individual and relay champions, regional qualifying times galore and Bagcat winners. The Bagcat championship is consid- ered the most important for all age group swimmers (up to 14 years) and we had 3! Head Coach Report Hello everyone,

March proved an exciting month with superb performances at counties, records galore, a junior championship winner, 3 BAGCat winners, a swimmer in the National Colleges Championships and a swimmer reaching the National Schools Championships.

Sussex County Championships 2nd-3rd & 16th-17th March This year’s Sussex County Championships were both exciting and eventful.

Our pb rate was a brilliant 87%, the highest we have had since first recording this statistic in 2005. There have been many huge pbs which is amazing considering how recently many swim-mers achieved their county times and how many did pbs only a couple of weeks ago at Sussex League. It shows how even a small taper for our youth swimmers can be very effective.

Our swimmers competed in 43 finals. Jess Frayne won the Girls 50m Freestyle Junior Championship (16/under) and will re-ceive a trophy for this in a few weeks, our first Championship winner since 2007. Jess also broke one of our oldest club records held by Philippa Overy since 1993, swimming the 50m butterfly in 30.74 seconds. Not to be outdone, 13 yr old Ella Porter swam club records in both the 50m and 100m backstroke in the fastest times ever recorded by a girl of any age at our club, including those set in 1997 & 1996 by Donna Lee when she was 14 & 15yrs respectively. But 11 yr old Lauren Boothby, is hot on both their heels and I’m sure will have these records in sight having broken an amazing 8 of them, as did Will Jagger! In-deed, a magnificent 38 new club records were set: Lauren Boothby (8), Jess Frayne (3), Ella Porter (2), Phina Sunderland (2), James Fairlie (5), Sam Munro (3), Will Jagger (8), Lewis Smart (4), Will Le Merle (2), Nic Savill (1).

There were Gold Medals galore with Lauren Boothby winning 10, James Fairlie 8, Will Le Merle 7, Sam Munro 3 and Lewis Smart 1, Will Jagger 1, with our team gaining the 5th highest number of wins in the county, not bad for a small club!

Our 9 year old boys (Ollie Hodges, Ollie Iden, Jamie Bond & Will Le Merle) claimed a superb Gold in their freestyle relay and Silver in the medley relay (with Matty Smith replacing Ollie I). Our 9 year old girls (Ellie Barnes-Smith, Anna Dedman, Sophie Wayman & Jess Blower) won Silver in their medley relay and Bronze in the freestyle relay.

Our 16/u boys freestyle relay A team (Alex Bryant, Sam Munro, Harry James, James Fairlie) came 5th in the final. Both the A and B (Rob Hunter, Strachan Robertson, Nic Savill & Josh Whitcombe) teams made the final of the 16/u boys medley relay finishing 5th and 7th respectively.

Our 16/u girls (Jess Frayne, Natalia Boothby, Gemma Charman & Lauren Boothby) very excitingly stormed to the Bronze Medal position in their freestyle relay final. They also made the medley final, with Ella Porter replacing Lauren and finished 5th.

Team points are scored in each event. We finished 7th overall in the Age Group events, with our Age Group Boys coming a su-perb 3rd in the county! In the Championship events our club finished 8th in the county out of the 18 competing clubs.

County BAGCat Winners The most important competition at the County Championships for our age group swimmers (9-14yrs) is the BAGCat competi-tion which rewards the best overall swimmers. They gain points from their best 50m and 100m sprint, best ind medley, best distance free and best 200 form stroke (back, breast or fly). We have 3 winners this year (out of a possible 12) - superb con-gratulations to Will Le Merle, Lauren Boothby and James Fairlie!

Lewis Smart came 2nd and there were further top 8 places from Ollie Hodges, Jamie Bond, Amelia Wright, Charlie Hodges and Sam Munro.

As a result Will Le Merle, Ollie Hodges, Jamie Bond, Amelia Wright, Lauren Boothby have all been selected to the Sussex County Development Squad (for 9-12yr olds). I expect to see a few swimmers on the Junior and Senior County Squads too - for this they need to achieve and swim 3 regional times. Currently this looks like Sam, Harry, James, Jess, Will J, Charles, and Lau-ren, with a couple more very close to this goal. Indeed, there were 17 new Regional Qualifying times and 20 improved regional times swum by: Abby Smith, Amelia Wright, Lauren Boothby, Ella Porter, Jess Frayne, Will Le Merle, Lewis Smart, James Fairlie, Sam Munro, Harry James, Will Jagger, Charles Redwood. So it is all looking very positive for the Regional Championships in May (Youth) and June (Age Group). There is still time to get more of the very tough qualifying times, especially for our age group swimmers who can do this at our open meet in April.

The counties have been a record year for us this year and it was lovely to see so many improved swims from everyone. Con-gratulations to everyone who swam, including those not already mentoned – Alice Mantle, Anna Mantle, Rachel Baily, Strachan Robertson, Drew Gowland, Nic Savill, Tom Jefferis, Ryan Lamprell, Luke Lamprell, Taylor Holter, Jack Collins, Connor McHale, Holly Porter, D’Arcy Kosla-Rule, Phina Sunderland, Leah Nicholls, Hannah Dunn-Coleman, Rebecca Dunn-Coleman, Tess Lauretani, Corey Gowans, Will Redwood, Frankie Harrison, Rob Hunter, Jessie Brown, Tyler Whitcombe and Charlie Bond..... I hope I haven’t missed anyone! You were all awesome, I am so proud of you!!

The atmosphere at the end of the final session warm up was amazing, with swimmers all around the pool and on all 32 blocks dancing to YMCA, Gangnam Style and more – brilliant! I hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

Thank you to everyone who helped at the counties: Helen Smith, Sally Hodges, Sarah Whitcombe, Sarah Frayne, Belinda Munro, Steve Bond.

An exciting development for next year is that Sussex County ASA are planning to run the County Championships long course, though full details are yet to be published. This makes sense with the changes at national level where youth swimmers can now only gain their national times long course.

Puffin Trophy Gala, Horsham 9th March

A team of 31 swimmers travelled to Horsham for the Puffin Trophy ‘B’ Gala. There were many excellent results with 26 pbs swum in the individual races (a very high 81% pb rate). We finished 6th overall out of the 8 teams competing. Special mention should go to 4 swimmers who swam what would have been County Qualifying Times for this year - Charlie Blower (50 free), Luke Lamprell (50 fly), Jessie Brown (50 breast), Taylor Holter (50 free). Team support and behaviour was excellent, with a su-perb team chant at the end! Well done to everyone who took part: Beth Bashford, Jacinta Gowans, Jessica Blower, Maisie Smart, Anna Thompson, Tierney Cox, Saffron Ahern, Heidi Cameron, Amelie Pearce, Sophie Whittington, Katie Haywood, Emily Pryke, Abigail Homer, Charlotte Cole, Lauren Wayman, Felicity James, Jessica Brown, Jamie Bond, Alfie Davis, Ryan Holter, Ollie Iden, Zak Rigby, Akos Hausnecht, Alfie Peck, Zac Evans, Taylor Holter, Luke Lamprell, Isaac Woods, William Redwood, Charlie Blower.

Thank you to our brilliant helpers - Steve Bond (judge), Daren Pryke (time keeper), Oli Cox (lane end), Denise Brown & Pip Red-wood (team managers) and senior swimmers Lewis Cox and Corey Gowans.

ESSA Primary School Relay Championships, Horsham, 20th March It was great to see a number of our swimmers representing their schools in the Sussex round of the primary school relay cham-pionships. Each team swam a freestyle relay and a mixed stroke relay (where the butterfly length could be breaststroke in-stead!). The East Preston girls (Anna Mantle, Amelia Wright & Amelie Pearce) won their mixed stroke relay and came 4th in the region (out of 71 schools), missing out on the national final by 0.01 seconds! This means they are 1st reserve for this event so fingers crossed. Other LSC swimmers competing for their schools were Akos Hausnecht, Katie Haywood, Leah Nicholls, Nancy Vincent, Heidi Cameron and one of our iSwim members in her first gala Gabriella Noyce.

British Colleges Championships, Bath, 23rd March Jess Frayne competed in the National final of the British Colleges Championships, having won her 100m freestyle in the re-gional round (representing Worthing College). She finished 4th in her individual event and superbly swam the final leg of the relay moving the South East Region team from 5th when she took over to 2nd and the silver medal! The South East Region finished 2nd overall in the swimming.

ESSA South East Region Inter-County Gala, Guildford, 24th March Will Jagger and Will Condron represented Sussex Schools in the Regional Championships last Sunday. Will Jagger repeated his county success by again winning both the 200m & 400m freestyle. He will now travel to the Liverpool Aquatic Centre at the end of June to represent the South East Region in the ESSA National Schools Swimming Championships.

Portsmouth Northsea Easter Festival, 28th – 31st March 8 Littlehampton swimmers competed in this top level long course open meet – Will Jagger, Jess Fraye, Ella Porter, Holly Porter, Lewis Smart, Tyler Whitcombe, Amelia Wright and Abby Smith. All swam long course PBs, with Will and Ella both medalling. Ella stormed to the finish in her 50m backstroke final, moving from 6th seed to finish 3rd in the bronze medal position. In our last event of the long weekend Will was seeded 2nd in his 200m freestyle final, just 0.16s behind Will Condron (swimming for Portsmouth) so we knew it would be a good final and we weren’t disappointed. A very exciting race saw Will C take a strong early lead in the first 100m, but was caught up by Will J who edged ever so slightly ahead in the last 50m only to be beaten by 0.6s with a superb finish from Will C. Will’s heat time of 1:57.69 was just 1s off his national qualifying time. Thank you to Sarah Whitcombe, Helen Smith and Donna Jagger who helped team manage.

I hope you all had a lovely Easter. Good luck to everyone swimming in our April open meet.

Happy Swimming! Sue X

The Adlington Academy

Hi Team,

Happy Easter to you all! I hope that you had lots of delicious Easter Eggs!

I went to The Triangle today with my children (it’s a swimming pool and play pool too) and was really impressed to see Theo having fun in the rapids and practising his swimming too. Remember the more you swim the stronger and better you will get.

It’s the same at training too, the more you practise your starts and finishes, the easier they will be. Try to always start with a streamlined push and glide (arrow) and finish with 2 hands at the same time for breaststroke & butterfly, on your back for backstroke and with a one-handed superman finish for front crawl. Amanda & I will keep reminding you which will help and we will also be watching to see if anyone can remember themselves.

Keep trying your best all of the time.

Jackson Squad

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, I'd like to start by thanking Fliss for taking on the role of newsletter editor. The club is very grateful . We are very keen to bring new members on board to help run the club so please come forward, we desperately need a Gala Secretary to take over from Bernie. Suzanne Nichols has very kindly taken on the role of Grants Officer and has been very busy applying for all sorts of grants, thanks go to her.

Well done to all those who swum at the Counties, fantastic results, a huge pat on the back goes to Sue for getting those swimmers to that level of competition (and further). Special mention goes to Ollie Iden who swam in the 9 year relay at counties, the only Jackson Squad member there!

We are still concentrating on streamlining our strokes within Jackson squad. Remember the more streamline you are the faster you will go. Your head position is very important too, ask your lane coach to, look at the position of your head with each stroke, they will be able to advise you and guide you. Don't forget to get your entries in for our Open Meet on 21st April, again speak to your lane coaches regarding what you should enter.

Happy Easter ( don't eat too much chocolate)!

That's all, Denise xx

Littlehampton Swimming Club Needs YOU! As a swimming club we rely on volunteers to make sure

the swimmers can compete and train. We really need volunteers to help at our next Gala in April.

There are lots of jobs that need no experience, it is also a great way to meet other parents

and learn more about the club. Please speak to the helpdesk to volunteer.

Happy Easter to you all! I hope the Easter hedgehog brought you lots of delicious eggs!

Well done to everyone who swam in the Puffin Gala; Abigail H, Charlotte, Jess, Amelie, Sophie Whittington, Stephen, Zac, Jamie, Akos, Katie and Emily. It sounds like you all had a great time with individual wins for Sophie & Jamie, second places for Amelie & third for Jess & Abigail. PBs were swum by Sophie Whittington, Akos, Amelie, Zac, Katie, Emily, Jamie, Abigail.

The County championships were awesome this year, everyone did brilliantly with a really high PB rate. Summarised below are the main results for Foster, for full results please look on the notice board or Sue’s e-mail.

Don’t forget there’s a packet of sweets on offer for the first person to spot the random word in Foster squad chat -just to make sure that you all read it (No grown-ups this month, that’s outrageous!!). My email address is [email protected] so feel free to send me any updates or anything else you’d like me to mention in swim talk. It’s also good for any questions too.

Keep up the good work

Thorpe Squad

Hi Guys

There have been a few moves this month so I would like to welcome Felicity James and Lauren Wayman who moved up and joined us. Also, good luck to D’Arcy, Ryan and Turner who moved to Phelps, keep up the good work.

Well, there have been loads of galas this month, including the Counties, and plenty more to come before the sea-son is over. We had a great turn out at the Counties, so a huge well done to all our swimmers; Lewis, Lauren B, Charlie H, Anna, Tyler, Hannah, D’Arcy, Tess, Rebecca, Rachel, Jess, William, Corey, Luke, Jack C, Taylor, Tom and Ryan.

Great results from: Lauren B, who won the girls age 11 50m breaststroke, 200m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 50m fly, 100m backstroke, 50m backstroke, 100m IM, 200m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 200 IM. Congratulations on winning the age 11 girls BAGCats! In addition Lauren was also part of the girls 16/under freestyle relay team who came second!

Lewis S, who won the boys age 11 50m breaststroke, coming 2nd in the boys age 12 category.

Through their great achievement at the Counties, coming in the top 8 BAGCat positions for their age group, Lauren, Lewis S and Charlie H will be able to go to extra County training provided at K2. Hope you guys enjoy it and work hard to make sure you get the most from it. Regionals and Nationals are calling I think!!

The next few galas are the Portsmouth Easter Meet, the Crawley Spring Open Meet, our own Last chance Qualifier and the Vanessa Knight Memorial at the Arena pool. Good luck to any one swimming at Crawley and Portsmouth and I hope you are all entering one or two events at our gala and the Bognor gala (unless you are at the Regionals that weekend). The Last Chance Qualifier will be the last opportunity to gain a regional time so, if you are close to one, make sure you get your entry in!!

Good luck to Caleb who is swimming at the British Disability Gala. He will be swimming the 100m back, 200m free-style and 50m fly.

Back to training, could you all please make an effort to know your PBs, or at least the main ones, i.e. your 50ms and 200m free. When we do a set using the pace clock or a set that requires you to work at PB + x seconds, you really need to know what you are aiming for and whether you have achieved it or not. You all have County and Regional potential in this Squad but you need to help yourselves sometimes to achieve this potential. It is very important that you are able to train at these very specific timing levels. Please ask if you are not sure of anything.

Also, please make sure you use the block to help you get the explosive start you need every time you dive, I have shown you how but will go over it again.

Finally for training, thanks to the lane who worked really hard the other Tuesday on improving technique especially Rachel in the breaststroke turn, as she gave all the demos! Also to Will Redwood who has finally cracked the free-style arms...well done Will, keep it up!

If there are any parents who would like to help poolside in setting the swimmers off, crowd control etc... we would be most grateful to have you. These are a lovely but lively bunch and the more help we can get the better, thanks.

Lastly, thank you to Katie, our university student from Chi who has been helping on Tuesdays as part of her course. You have all made her feel really welcome so thanks for that and she has been doing a great job. As always, thanks to Oli too.

If you need to get in touch with me for any reason at all, including to let me know what you have achieved, you can contact me on [email protected].

Swimmer of the Month

Well done to everyone who swam at the County Championships; everyone swam fantastically, supporting and encouraging each other poolside. We had an amazing PB rate and an outstanding number of Regional Qualifying Times. First qualifying times were gained by Abigail Smith, Ella Porter, Lewis Smart, Amelia Wright, and Will Le Merle! Our relay teams also did very well, the Girls’ 9 year old Medley Relay and 16 and under Freestyle Relay Teams both came 2nd, and the 9 year old Boys Freestyle Relay Team came 1st. We were beating many of the big major clubs in Sussex! Coming up we have our own club Open Meet at which many of you will be swimming. This will be a great op-portunity to get some more PB’s. I hope you all had a lovely Easter and look forward to seeing every-one back soon
