Context

The concept of Globalisation developed in the 1960s after Canadian academic Marshall McLuhan used the term Global Village to describe the breakdown of spatial barriers around the world.

A few lessons ago we looked at the different dimensions of Globalisation: Economic, cultural, political, environmental, linguistic, demographic etc.

More recently, people have attempted to measure the extent to which individual countries exhibit globalisation in these different forms.

They give an indication of how much or little countries are opening themselves up and connecting with others. If countries are to develop through trade then how globalised they are is significant.

Today we look at the two main methods that have been used.

5

How would YOU measure Globalisation?

What variables would you look at?

What is the criteria for being a highly globalised country?

Why?

6

What would your top ten variables be for measuring how globalised a place is?

This is a study that assesses the extent to which the world's most populous nations are becoming more or less globally connected. It gives countrys a score from 1 to 1000.

Method 1:The A.T. Kearney/FOREIGN POLICY Globalization Index

"The worldmay not be flat for everyone, everywhere, but there’s no turning back the clock on globalization. For the seventh year,Foreign Policy partners with A.T.Kearney to measure countries on their economic, personal, technological, and political integration. Find out who’s climbing the ranks, and who’s sliding down."

This includes each country's memberships in a variety of representitive international organisations e.g. UN

Counts the number of internet users, hosts and secure servers

Including international trade and foreign direct investment

Including telephone calls, travel and remittances.

Method 2: The KOF Index of Globalization

This measures the three main dimensions of globalization: * economic e.g. trade

* social e.g. personal contacts (international telecom traffic and the degree of tourism a country's population is exposed to), information flows (internet users, cable tv subscribers, international newspapers traded and number of radios.) and cultural proximity (domination of US cultural products, number of Mcdonalds/IKEA).

* and political e.g Number of embassies in a country, number of international organisations teh country is a member of and the number of UN peace missions the country has been involved in

1. Use the handout (GEO Factsheet 243) to briefly summarise the two methods of measuring Globalisation.2. On your copy of the Index ‐ Examine the countries and their positions for each variable with your partner. During discussion annotate on any criticisms or explanations for placements on this index.3. On the animation above why do some countries appear to slide up and down the index through time?4. Use pg 2 to suggest who globalisation is a BIG imperative for. Why?5. Give one characteristic of more and one of less globalised countries (pg 2)6. Use the handout to explain what the digital divide is7. Comment on Fig 4 from the geo factsheet.8. Briefly describe the pattern shown in Fig 5 (global telephone landline calls)9. Use pg 3 of the Geo Factsheet to suggest reasons for this pattern.10. In what way has globalisation increased inequalities at the global level?
