On what calendar do you note appointments and important occasions?
Is it on the refrigerator, by the phone, in a pocket or purse or on your
phone? Well, wherever that calendar is, please take it out now.
No, really, I mean it. Please get your calendar out before reading any
further.
Thanks. Now, open to June. On Saturday, June 27 write (or type) HAVEN BLOCK
PARTY, 10 am - 2 pm. Use bold print or surround the words with a circle or box so
you won’t miss it.
It started as one family’s experience at another church and the Holy Spirit took it
from there. The Parish Education Team kept returning to the idea of a BLOCK
PARTY — a purely fun occasion for families and our other neighbors. Provide
games, food, entertainment, prizes, opportunities to converse and laugh together
and maybe sign-up for Vacation Bible School (VBS). Finally the team thought,
“Let’s go with it and see where God leads us.” We began to imagine. What kind of
games? Could we get one of those “bouncy houses”? What about a craft table? Hot-
dogs, chips and bottles of water? Maybe a petting zoo? Everyone began researching
possibilities and the Evangelism Team agreed to join in, too.
A BLOCK PARTY on June 27 is a wild and crazy idea. After all, in June and July
we’re busy gathering supplies, food, staff and sponsorships for V.B.S. But here is
the fascinating thing — we’re having fun, getting excited and, yes, still a bit scared,
too. But I can tell you from personal experience, that’s often how it feels when
you’re following the Lord’s lead. The Holy Spirit — our Lord on the loose among
and in us – is like a powerful wind and breathless wonder that sweeps you up and
into pathways of grace. You’re a bit startled yet intrigued; a bit overwhelmed yet
unable to turn away from this dream that has taken hold.
In the coming weeks you will hear more about the BLOCK PARTY. You will be
asked to find a part in this neighborhood and family event Haven is sponsoring.
Think about it. If you like planning big parties, we could use your ideas! If you
know some resources or have connections to persons or businesses who would par-
ticipate or make donations to a family event, we would sure appreciate hearing
from you! If you’d like to join the fun of making this BLOCK PARTY come true,
you’d be a blessing! If you can be available to help in some way for any amount of
time on June 27th, you’re in! In any case, contact Marge Cunningham, Mary Fort-
son or any member of the Parish Education or Evangelism teams to be among the
hands doing God’s wild work right here at Haven on June 27.
Would you get that calendar out one more time, please? On Monday, June 1st write
PRAY for BLOCK PARTY* Then put an asterik by each June date so you will re-
member to pray each day for Haven’s BLOCK PARTY. Pray that the Lord will be
at work to bring together the people, plans, and donations needed to make the
BLOCK PARTY a blessing. Pray that the Lord will be at work in the lives and
hearts of families and neighbors that they come to the BLOCK PARTY and experi-
ence the grace of God and the fun of being together as God’s children.
PRAY.... VOLUNTEER... COME.... CELEBRATE...
GOD’S WORK. OUR HANDS.

HELPING THE RESIDENTS OF HOLLY PLACE – For the month of May we will be collecting
Paper Towels for the residents of Holly Place. There is a container in the narthex for you to place your items.
EASTER FOOD BASKETS—The AMEN Team would like to thank everyone for their generous contribu-
tions of food items and monetary donations for the Easter food basket distributions to needy families. It is in-
dicative of the caring of the congregation for those in need. Also we would like to thank everyone who helped
pack and deliver the baskets. Great effort on everyone’s part and again thank you for your generosity.
COUNCIL
LOOKING FOR DELEGATE(S) TO REPRESENT HAVEN AT THE
WASHINGTON COUNTY COALITION OF LUTHERANS.
Since 2010 lay members from the Lutheran churches in Washington County have been meeting as a
"Coalition" the first Monday of each month. What is the purpose? Read on:
Washington County Coalition of Lutherans
Working hands led by God
Mission: (Who are we and why do we exist?) Called by God to build relationships, share resources, inspire others and grow spiritually
Objectives: (What will we do?)
Establish communications between Lutheran congregations in Washington County
Develop resource listing
Share information via congregational newsletters, internet, and other channels
Determine, plan, implement and evaluate quarterly county-wide service, fellowship and educational
events
Offer help to other people within the broader Washington Co. community
Work toward goodwill relationships between congregations
Create a sense of continuity within the Coalition
Hopefully you've heard of some of the events sponsored by the Coalition: An annual Picnic and Volleyball
tournament; a joint Sunday worship at the Maryland Theater; a county-wide "God's Work. Our Hands" event
last September.
Pastor Alessandri is now the clergy contact working with the Coalition. But Haven does not currently have any
delegate participating in this cooperative venture. What would a delegate(s) do?
* Attend one meeting a month (first Monday)
* Have the opportunity to meet other Lutherans and hear what is going on in their congregations
* Enjoy the creative fun of sharing possibilities and shaping plans
This might be just the place for YOU to serve our Lord and congregation. Give it some thought and prayer.
Speak with Pastor Alessandri if you want to know more. Contact Council President Ed Distad to volunteer to
give it a try. This may be just your way "to honor God, to reach out with love to our members and the commu-
nity and to share the gospel of Jesus Christ."
WILL HAVEN’S THREE LITTLE PIGS BE FULL BY MAY 28th?
There are three cartons that bear a quirky resemblance to pigs hanging around Haven. Each piggy bank holds
$30 in quarters. If each congregation in the Delaware-Maryland Synod fills three piggy banks, we will be able
to give about $15,000 towards the ELCA World Hunger programs.
Next time you pass one of our piggy banks, put in your quarters so these little piggies can go “Wee, Wee,
Wee” all the way to the May DE-MD Synod Assembly and join the battle against hunger.

HAVEN GOALS FOR 2015 - 2016 (as proposed at March 14 Council Retreat; revised at April 11 Cabinet Meeting
and adopted by the Congregational Council on April 20)
1) Establish an Endowment fund
2) Plan for maintenance of church property, both regular care and other
needed projects, including:
a) listing and prioritizing property needs
b) managing and furthering church roof replacement
c) schedule of regular maintenance tasks (ex. stripping and waxing floors)
3) Strengthen the church community
a) Increase and improve communications by utilizing bulletin boards, calling absent members, asking others
to participate in activities, committees etc.
b) “Re-imagine” Team Functions
c) Develop a Youth Ministry that meets regularly and broaden pool of adults to lead and attend youth events.
Please read, talk and pray about these goals. Offer your feed back to any Council member. Consider how the
Lord may be calling YOU to be a part of bringing one or more of these goals to fruition.
EVANGELISM TEAM
2015 SPRING BAKE AND YARD SALE A GREAT SUCCESS! How do we know it was a great success?
One of our goals was to get out into the community --- to interact, be helpful, be a visible neighbor. Well,
many, many, many people visited the Bake and Yard Sale on April 18th. There was a steady flow of people
visiting the various sellers, looking over the offerings and enjoying the absolutely beautiful day. People shared
conversation over baked goodies and coffee. We engaged in friendly banter and exchanged personal gems
about family or life as folks looked over yard sale items. People met as they "oohed" over a cute babies or
"ahhed" over a sweet pet. There were no "insiders" or "outsiders" just children of God sharing a beautiful day.
It was like watching the kingdom of God open its arms and say, “come on down” and we all were happy for
the chance. Our other goal was to raise money to battle hunger. Any money raised would be split between St. Mark's
Food Bank and Micah's Backpacks here at Haven. Look at these numbers!
Haven's Bake Sale $287.57
Table Rentals $190.00
Haven's Yard Sale Table $461.85
TOTAL $939.42
And then a Haven member thought the total should be a round number and turned in a check for $60.58 to
make it $1,000!
So, yes, the 2015 Spring Bake and Yard Sale was a success, thanks to many who donated baked goods and
yard sale items... called people to bake or help... set-up tables or staffed them. A success, thanks to the many
members of the community who came. A success, thanks to our Lord who gave us the desire and will "to
honor God, to reach out with love to our members and the community and to share the gospel of Jesus
Christ.*" Amen. * Haven's Mission Statement
EVANGELISM: REACHING IN AND REACHING OUT— The Team has considered several dimensions
of “evangelism”—not only reaching out to the community, but reaching in to members of our congregation.
Reaching out, under the leadership of Pam O’Connor, we planned a yard and bake sale for April 18,
coordinating the date with that of the Western Maryland Hospital. In addition, we are working with Mary
Fortson and the Education Team to plan a “block party” for June 27. (continue article on page 4)
M A Y 2 0 1 5

Reaching in, the team has led the congregation in four sessions during the adult Sunday School hour about
changes as we grow older: the emotional and spiritual lessons of diminishments (such as knee replacements),
caring for the caregiver, major transitions such as leaving one’s home, and planning one’s funeral. Our discus-
sions were enriched by experts from Washington County Cares, Diakon, Hospice, and Fiery Funeral Home,
and of course, Pastor Allessandri. Several members of the congregation raised hopes of beginning a congrega-
tional support group.
In another manifestation of reaching in, the team began the practice of praying for a different Sunday
School class each month during the worship service, recognizing the students, teachers, aides, and study topic
of each group. Don Evason and Beth Johns, co-chairs

In the month of May the Evangelism Team invites you to keep our
Teen School Sunday School Class in your daily prayers.
This month they will be learning more about our Savior and deepen their relationships with Him and each
other. Pray that the teaching and learning in their class is blessed with the power and presence of our Lord.
VISITATION TEAM - we will meet on May 9th at 9:30 AM in Pastor’s office.
PARISH EDUCATION TEAM
And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God,
which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is,
the word of God, which is at work in you believers. 1 Thessalonians 2:13
As the Sunday School moves toward May and our closing of the 2014-15 year, we have much to give thanks to
God for.
We thank God for the packing of Micah’s backpacks done on a regular basis by the Sunday School classes.
This ministry allows us to feed hungry children and recognize the blessing of food that God has given us.
We thank God for the assemblage of 17 Zach Packs, a new ministry that enables us to reach out to home-
less children. This has allowed us to take time to thank church members for their generosity as well as
thank God for His mercy in supplying our need for shelter and the basics. In future church bulletins and
newsletters, we will be asking for additional supplies as the need arises.
We thank God for the confirmands. We thank God for their faithfulness to confirmation classes and their
personal affirmations of their faith.
We thank God for our Sunday School classes that have grown not only in size but in faith. During the
year, we ministered to the Hagerstown community through the Haunted Rooms and the world wide com-
munity through Heifer International Projects. In both of these ministries, we were humble in our vision, but
God outperformed us and enlarged our scope.
We thank God for our continuing faith that will allow us to sponsor our first annual Block Party on
Saturday June 27, 2015 10-2 here at the church. It is our vision/mission that with God’s help and yours,
we will have a day of family, fun, and fellowship featuring a bouncy house, food, games, petting zoo, face
painting, and MORE…. We are thankful that this ministry allows us to come together corporately in faith
and allows us in faith to expect God to bless this effort.
We ask that you continue to pray for all who participate in Sunday School with a special emphasis on the Teen
class under the leadership of Pastor Alessandri, Mike Manspeaker, and Jensen Richards.

HAVEN’S NEW MINISTRY “ZACH PACKS” - Dear Haven Family,
On behalf of the Salvation Army and myself, I want to thank you for your overwhelming re-
sponse to the Zach Pack Ministry. As you can see from the photo, supplies were in great abun-
dance, and backpacks were delivered to the Salvation Army on Monday, April 13th. Your love
and support is bringing so much happiness to homeless children in our community. We are
truly blessed to be a blessing to others. God is good all the time! All the time, God is good.

WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY - Women will meet in the Parlor on Thursday, May 28, from 10:00-11:30am to
continue their study of the "Transforming Life and Faith" series from "Gather " magazine.
We will complete our April study, "Inspired by the Risen Lord" and do as much as we can of the May study,
"The Church: Transforming and Reforming."
Copies of both studies are available on the portable message board. All women are invited to join us for this
informative and relevant study and discussion of God's word.

School so YES everyone counts. Keep them coming Haven Friends!
PARISH LIFE TEAM
ATTENTION BOOK LOVERS! - Join us on Thursday, May 21st at 2 pm in the Parlor to
discuss “Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brown. This book is an irresistible story about
beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times. It is the improbable, intimate
account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936
Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant. The book for June is “The Lovely Bones” by Alice Sebold.
Hope to see you—Joan Schupp
LOOKING FOR A GOOD BOOK? - Be sure to check out Haven’s free library located on a book cart in the
Adult Sunday School classroom – (sometimes in the Narthex). Help yourself to a book, read & enjoy, return it
or pass it on.
COFFEE HOUR - Remember to sign-up to serve as host for our coffee hour following the service every
Sunday. Coffee, tea, and paper products are provided. Hosts bring simple treats, and love.
PROPERTY TEAM
The Property Team would like to thank all those who came out and helped with our Church Clean Up Day.

church when you are finished in them.
