The English writer and poetWilliam Shakespeare is consideredby many to be the greatest play-wright of all time. While most peopleare familiar with the name of WilliamShakespeare, no one knows whenhe was born. Experts know that hewas baptized on April 26, 1564, andbelieve that he was 3 days old atthe time. This is why the April 23date has been adopted as his offi-cially recognized birthday. This datealso is the day he died on, 52 yearslater in 1616.When Shakespeare left his home

in Stratford-upon-Avon for London, itis rumored he had to leave becausehe was caught poaching (huntingillegally). Shakespeare married at18 and wrote his first known playwhen he was 25 years old. He wasa very well known actor as well as aplaywright, performing in his ownand other people’s plays.Shakespeare worked with a compa-ny of actors called the LordChamberlain’s Men, for whom hewrote his plays and performed with.William Shakespeare’s writings

have been translated into more lan-guages than those of any otherauthor. There are more than 80 dif-ferent translations of his plays andpoems being performed and readby people all over the world.Shakespeare used 17,677 differentwords to write his plays and poems, including 1,700 that he created him-self (The word “assassination” wasinvented by Shakespeare). Most

people use only 2,000 to 2,500words when speaking and writing, but Shakespeare was able to useseven times this number.Shakespeare is credited with 39

plays, including “Hamlet,” “Macbeth,”“Romeo and Juliet,” and “JuliusCaesar.” His plays are usually divid-ed into three types: comedies(which have a happy ending), histo-ries (which are based on realevents) and tragedies (which havean unhappy ending). There is stillmuch debate about which poemsand plays were written by WilliamShakespeare, as he often collabo-rated with other writers to createplays, which was common at thattime.“Cardenio” is the name of a play

that was written by Shakespeare, and performed while he was alive, but there is no copy of this play sur-viving today. Many people have triedto find out what the play was about, but the mystery of this lost workmay never be solved. If you can finda copy, keep hold of it — it will beworth a lot of money!
