Paralanguage is the use of voice variation and extraneous sounds to communicate.

Pitch, rate, volume, and quality make up the tone of your voice.

The use of pause can create suspense, emphasize words, etc.

The use of extraneous sounds such as “um” and “uh” fill space in a sentence.

Tone:A particular quality, way of sounding,

modulation, or intonation of the voice as expressive of some meaning, feeling, spirit, etc.

 Pitch:The degree of height or depth of a

tone or of sound. Inflection:

Modulation of the voice; change in pitch or tone of voice.

Volume:The degree of sound intensity or

audibility.
