    1 Introduction

    These instructions and recommendations intend to facilitate the set-up and configuration of the GranitoGrav. The focus lies primarily on the interaction with our High-Z machines and the WinPCNC Economy software.

    For more details, please refer to the separate manual of the control software WinPCNC!

    Pictures and drawings may differ from the real GranitoGrav and accessories. Please contact us if you are not sure of your settings to avoid any problems.

    In the screenshots, the relevant data is highlighted. The other settings are not relevant.

    3 Application description

    Technical description The GranitoGrav makes photo-engraving/2D photo-engraving and vector engraving on granite and glass possible. For that purpose the grinding tool penetrates the surface. The result is grinding marks on the surface which will ultimately create a picture.

    The surface is deliberately destroyed by this kind of process. The original state cannot be restored.

    4 System requirements

    - High-Z XXX-T (T version only) or RaptorX-SL - Software: WinPCNC Economy version required! Important: currently no other WinPCNC version possible - PC with two parallel port interfaces

    If two LPT ports are not available or possible, the GranitoGrav can be operated alternatively with one LPT port with a matching Y-adapter (possible loss of signal quality)

    - 1GHz, 1GB Ram, USB port, 10MB free disk space, Win2k, XP, Vista or Windows 7

    - Expansion of software for 3D ConstruCam for GranitoGrav

    6 Assembly on High-z S-xxx/T

    For mounting the grinding unit drive the Z-axis to the machine centre. There, drive the Z-Axis as far down that the screw heads of the 43mm Euroneck clamp are freely accessible. Dismantle the 43mm Euroneck clamp To mount the grinding unit, jack up the machine so that the grinding unit can be installed without ground contact. Then, drive the Z-axis to the top and thereby avoid ground contact after lowering the machine. Now, the grinding unit can be connected.

    7 Electric wiring diagram, two options

    The power supply unit should be plugged directly into the rear socket of the machine control. This outlet is controlled by software via a relay.

    If you order a machine including the GranitoGrav the connection from the control box to the grinding unit (3) is integrated in the energy chain and must be connected accordingly.

    8 Work piece positioning

    The work piece, for example a granite slab, should be placed under the GranitoGrav in the following way:

    1. The surface of the work piece should lie within a tolerance zone of 1mm to the XY plane (best would be total plane surface).

    2. The minimum distance should be approximately 1mm from the stationary grinding pin and the maximum distance should be 2mm.

    3. The work piece should lie non-slip to prevent shifting. Work pieces that are too light to maintain their position by their own weight are to be fixed by appropriate clamping means.

    9 Parameter settings in WinPC-NC

    All described parameter settings are accessible upon delivery of the latest software WinPCNC as parameter file after installation. This does not apply to the old versions of the software and must in that case be carried out manually.

    To use the full range of the GranitoGrav the maximum rotational speed must be set to 15000. Proceed as follows:

    1. Open window parameter 2. Choose tab machine 3. Press button Axis XYZ 4. Set maximum spindle speed to 15000 5. Check the settings and then save and close the window

    The control box requires the PWM signal coming from the PC. To direct the signal to the control box (2 options) assign the PWM output to a cable as follows:

    10 Reference run with GranitoGrav (! risk of collision!)

    The GranitoGrav is a tool that protrudes forwards and downwards. In order to avoid collisions with the machine frame, the machine must be restricted in its traverse path. In order to do this, the WinPCNC software provides a so-called offset. Please set it as indicated below.

    This causes a shifting of the actual zero point to the value entered. The order for the reference run (Z, Y, X) must be strictly observed. As the machine performs the reference run Z first and stops afterwards in top position, the reference run X will cause no problem. After that the reference offset takes effect.

    The only alternative to the reference offset would be the adjustment of the magnet switch for the X-axis.

    Since the machine is now limited in the traverse path X it is also absolutely necessary to limit the traverse path of the machine. (Calculation = standard traverse path - offset)

    11 Loading of a milling program (Creation of a milling program for the GranitoGrav is described under point 17)

    In WinPC-NC click open file (F2) to load file.

    To be able to see a comprehensible picture on the work surface, switch 3D colour shade to rotation speed. Proceed as follows:

    1. Open window parameter 2. Choose tab Misc parameters 3. Press button More 4. Set under 3D colour shading from Spindle speed 5. Check the settings and then save and close the window

    The resulting greyscale picture is to be evaluated as follows:

    Black => no intervention into work piece

    All levels of grey => intervention into work piece

    White => deep intervention into work piece

    12 Approach zero-point on the work piece

    Approach the zero-point of the work piece (Z) in WinPC-NC. On the milling unit of the GranitoGrav is a switch. For the approach of the zero-point it should be switched into the switching position 0 (OFF). Open the window (drive manually) in WinPCNC. Then lower the Z-axis to approximately 1mm above the work piece surface (use spacer). Save the zero-point. Afterwards reset switch to switching position 1 (ON).

    To keep the approached zero-point after saving set the function safety distance to the value 0 mm.

    Proceed as follows:

    1. Open window parameter 2. Choose tab coordinates 3. Press button dimensions 4. Set Tool Lift distance to 0.00mm 5. Check the settings and then save and close the window

    Manuel adjustment of the Z-axis (optional)

    Please note: This function is only available for machines that were sold together with the GranitoGrav. On those you find on the motor of the Z-axis an additional hand wheel for manual adjustment. Carry out the following steps:

    1. After the reference run 2. Switch off the control unit (! Dont shut down WinPC-NC!). 3. Remove the connecting cable of the Z-axis from the controller Zero-2 or

    Zero-3 4. Then switch the control unit back on 5. Now, the Z-axis can be adjusted via the hand wheel.

    Advantage: The height (and thus also the pressure of the work piece) can be controlled during the program sequence.

    13 Creation of a milling program with ConstruCam

    Please note: To create a milling program for the GranitoGrav the appropriate ConstruCam upgrade must be installed.

    To create a milling file for the grinding process images off the following formats can be read: PCX, BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG, TIF, TIFF

    The best results are achieved with images as dark and rich in contrast as possible (optimal images can be realised with image editing software)

    1. Start ConstruCam 2. Start a new graphic. 3. Choose the position of origin of co-ordinates (e.g. in the middle) (The size of the image is determined in point 7) 4. Click extras in the menu bar. 5. Click GranitoGrav. Thereupon the window for file selection opens

    (selection of images) 6. Choose desired file (image) (possible formats see above) 7. Thereafter, the output size of the image can be selected Keep proportionality yes/no and length values for X and Y. 8. In the window line raster that now opens adjust the following settings: - Line spacing: for the line spacing values between 10 and 30 have been

    proven to be optimally suitable. - Angle: set the desired angle in which you want to grind (e.g. 0 degrees

    or 45 degrees) - In minimum and maximum level you can convert the upper and lower

    percentage of the grey scale into white/black - Invert: here, the bright/dark shades of colours can be swopped to create

    a negative image. (default: no) 9. Now, click start. (the calculation process may take a few minutes) 10. Save the file under any name in the NC-format.

    The created file can now be loaded in WINPCNC.
