“WE’VE DRIFTED AWAY FROM BEING FISHERS OF MEN

TO KEEPERS OF THE AQUARIUM”

PAUL HARVEY

KNIGHTS OF SAINT JOSEPH

Men, the season of Lent is fast approaching and why not take the month of February as an opportunity to do a thor-ough house cleaning of our spiritual lives before Lent be-gins. Many of our mothers and wives engage routinely in spring house cleaning and figuratively and/or literally kick to the curb unwanted items that gather dust or impede the keep-ing an orderly home for our children and family. The num-ber one doctor approved remedy by Our Lord and King, Je-sus Christ, is to start by availing one’s self to the Sacrament of Confession after conducting a thorough self-examination of conscience. Couple that with frequent adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, Lectio Divina and performing acts of self-mortification to weed out as it were those sinful imper-fections which separate us from being in the state of sancti-fying grace. The Knights of St. Joseph pray that men, wom-en and children use the month of February to build grace upon grace as befits their vocation in life. Come join the Knights of St. Joseph for their evening of prayer on Friday, February 7, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, at St. James the Less (1032 Caledonia St). Our evenings start by praying the Angelus, Exposing the Blessed Sacrament, pray-ing both Evening and Night Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours. During our period of adoration there is an opportuni-ty for confession. Around 7:00 pm, Fr. Altman will give the Knights of St. Joseph a talk on St. Stephen, the first Chris-tian Martyr and what martyrdom entails. The evening con-cludes with Benediction. Men, kindly extend the invitation to your fathers and sons as well as those who are in your sphere of influence.

THREE CANDLES IN THE SANCTUARY

“I baptize you with water, but the one who is com-ing will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with

fire.”

(The Baptism of the Lord, the Liturgy of the Hours)

During the month of January the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. Here at Saint James, we will remember not only our own bap-tism, but also those who have been Baptized over the past year, represented by the three candles in the Sanc-tuary

The Prayer for the Lighting of the Candle from the Rite of Baptism:

“Receive the light of Christ. Parents and godpar-ents, this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. This child of yours has been enlightened by Christ. He (she) is to walk always as a child of the light. May he (she) keep the flame of faith alive in his (her) heart. When the Lord comes, may he (she) go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom.”

Catholic Traditions Because building our Faith does not happen by accident

Lex ordandi, lex credendi ~ As we pray, so we believe.

“[Jesus said to the Apostles] If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept, be-cause it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” Jn 14:15-18

As you have heard me say time and time again, Jesus did not go through all He went through only to leave us confused about Truth. He is the Truth, and He promised to send the Spirit of Truth. So, when we want to know the Truth, we look at 2,000 years of unchanged and unchangeable Truth. When any modernist tries to change 2,000 years of Truth, we know the modernist is a liar. Let us focus, then, on Church architecture and its meaning and see how the Catholic Church has preserved worship of Almighty God by and through its architecture which largely was unchanged since the first major basilicas were built, after the Catholic Faith finally was made legal under Constantine way back in 314 A.D., until the modernists held sway after Vat-ican II. In his book, Dogma and Preaching, Pope Benedict XVI included a chapter “On the Meaning of Church Architecture.” He referred to a novel written by the great Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The First Circle. In that book’s chapter entitled “Civic Temples,” an old communist named Rubin has been imprisoned by Stalin, but nevertheless unconditionally supports communist ideology. As we know, communist ideology absolutely denies God, and in God’s place, puts civil government. Rubin carries a remarkable project in his pocket entitled “Civic Temples.” Rubin recognized that in an atheistic communist society, the moral coherence provided by Faith in God is shattered. He realizes that “The Party” has taken the place of God. Therefore Rubin believes that it was more important for the Soviet Union to improve public morality than to build projects such as canals or dams. To do this - improve public morality - Rubin proposed that the Soviet Union build “civic temples” in which critical occasions of human life are to be celebrated in solemn ceremonies with collective participation, quote: “Indeed the whole architectural ensemble of the temple must breathe majesty and eternity.” In addition, there would have to be temple attendants who “enjoyed the love and trust of the people because of their own irreproachable, unselfish and worthy lives.” Dear family, human nature does not change. The same sins and sinfulness for which Almighty God gave to Moses the Ten Commandments 3,400 years still apply to us this very day. Then, as now, those Ten Commandments are necessary to guide people of Faith in moral living. Jesus obviously thinks so, which is why He said at the Last Supper, “If you love Me, you will keep My Commandments.” Jn 14:15 Just as human sinfulness does not change, so, too, is human need to worship Al-mighty God. If we are looking for Truth with regard to how we should go about it, then we need look no further than Almighty God, Who made it crystal clear exactly how we are to worship Him in Exodus chapters 25-31. Those chapters guided the build-ing of the first Temple 3,000 years ago, circa 1000 B.C., and the second Temple which was completed circa 515 A.D. Let us remember that Jesus regularly went to the 2nd Temple, and to synagogues modeled after the Temple, and never once criticized the buildings themselves, nor the form of worship, but only the bad shepherds who had lost the spirit of the worship. It should come as no surprise to us that Catholic Churches, with their sacred sanctuaries, greatly resembled the Temple. Since 314 A.D., and for the next 1,700 years, the model essentially was the same. Is it remotely possible that the Spirit of Truth would have let Catholics wallow in ignorance and error regarding all-important worship of Almighty God for 1,700 years, or even the last 800 years, when Notre Dame Cathedral first was constructed? Notre Dame, and all the great Cathedrals around the world, were constructed with specific intent to “breathe majesty and eternity,” as Solzheni-tsyn’s character put it. Let us understand, then, that it took liturgical loons after Vatican II to upend and upset roughly 3,000 years of sacred liturgical practice, since the first Temple was built until now. Mess with the Sanctuaries and mess with the wor-ship in the Sanctuaries, mess with the Faith of the people. We know this. Lex orandi, lex credendi. Pre-Vatican II, all Catho-lics believed in the Real Presence. Post V-II, just 30%. There is a profound moment in the Extraordinary Form of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass that no longer is understood by the vast majority of baptized Catholics, who no longer see that Form and no longer understand the moment. It is when the Missal is moved from the Epistle side of the sacred Altar over to the Gospel side of the Altar. If one were to ask the average Catholic, “what is the point of that?,” the Catholic might strive to deduce that it is meant to signify the relative importance of the Gospel. Incorrect. It is meant to signify the very words of Jesus Who said to the Jews: “Therefore, I say to you, the king-dom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.” Mt 21:43 The Jews rejected the Gospel and the Kingdom was taken from them, period. Anyone who denies that preaches a different Gospel than Jesus. As St. Paul said - twice - “Let them be accursed.” Gal 1:8-9 Let us realize that Jesus would not have endured His Passion and Death on the Cross only to leave us orphans - He said so Himself - nor to leave us confused about Truth, which is why He promised to send the Spirit of Truth. Let us understand the unchangeable Truth of Church architecture means that our church “must breathe majesty and eternity,” and that our Sacred Liturgy has been defined as Almighty God knows our human nature requires it. Let us realize majesty and eternity are not found in modernist edifices, or protestant stages, nor in post Vatican II novelties, but are found in classic Cathedrals like Notre Dame and in sacred liturgy that teaches us, in all it says and does, that we come to church to worship God, not for fellowship with man (do-able in the other 167 hours of the week).
