President’s MessageThough the 2012-2013 League year does not end until May, I have begun looking back on the year and the numerous projects in which the JLNVB has involved itself. I continue to be overwhelmed by all that we have accomplished. With just having completed the Past Presidents Luncheon, Kids in the Kitchen (our largest community project) and with our first annual Touch-a-Truck fundraiser right around the corner, I could not be more proud of all that we do to engage and train our members while making our community a better place. In talking to our past presidents the sentiment was echoed, “What you do is just amazing! I am so proud of my affiliation with this League as you continue to do such great work.” This is, however, not the great work of a president, the board or its members alone, it’s the collaborative effort of our team that continues to help the JLNVB thrive.

As the great Vincent Lombardi once said, “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.”

This holds true for our great organization. This year we have been blessed with a great leadership team. Our board of directors has worked countless hours to ensure the success of our League through financial growth, training, membership initiatives and various other projects. They are kind, talented and generous women that “think big” and approach every task with a can-do attitude. We have also been very fortunate to have sustaining members that continue to provide their support through mentoring in an advisory capacity and many others who have participated in the 1925 Society to help us to continue both our training and community projects. Lastly, we have been blessed with a wildly motivated membership and provisional class that truly believe the sky is the limit. We have partnered with dozens of non-profit organizations and completed hundreds of volunteer hours; our reach throughout Hampton Roads is immeasurable. Each of you continues to put your heart and soul into this organization with the same goal in mind; to continue improving the lives of women and children in our community. For all your hard work, I applaud and thank you.

Best Wishes,

Melissa Steadman2012-2013 President

We would like to give a special thank you to the EVMS Office of Development for hosting us for the March GMM. JLNVB truly appreciates the generosity of EVMS in supporting our mission.

In response to member feedback we made some changes to the General Membership Meetings this year and had fun inviting our significant others and children to meetings in the fall to show them how we make an impact in our South Hampton Roads community. In February we had inspiring cluster meetings to learn more about the community partners we help. As we wrap up the 2012-2013 League year, we are excited to return to Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club for what will be an entertaining, social occasion to celebrate all that we have accomplished this year!

CommunityLeftovers: February by the Numbers

On February 23, 14 members sorted and bagged 631 meals for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore Backpack Program. This nationally-recognized program distributes nutritious food to children at the end of the school day, before weekends and/or school breaks.

On February 26 we collected over $600.00 dollars in snack items for the ForKids Snack Drive. ForKids is striving to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty for families and children.

As their Done in a Day Project, members of the Provisional Class made 75+ Easter baskets to donate to military children through Operation Homefront.

KIDS IN THE KITCHENThe Kids in the Kitchen Committee would like to thank everyone for their help in putting on a flawless event. We exceeded our goal on attendance! We were hoping for 250 participants but reached a total of 285 based on the number of bags distributed to the registered guests!

With Pembroke Mall’s remodel, we were able to set up tables in three main areas of the mall that lent well to the mall’s travel pattern. Having registration in the center of all the stations and the stage allowed us to direct traffic and answer any questions in the center of all the action. Center Court was full of informative interactive booths to include the VA Department of Health (WIC), Lions Club eye screening and Terra Firma bringing healthy food literally back to its root.

One area was designated for crafts and clubs. As usual, the Chef Hat area was a big hit! With Abrakadoodle Arts and Jack and Jill doing fun face painting, kids of all ages had an art project to make and take home with them. Another area was dedicated to the major food groups, with the addition of Whole Food’s ‘food art’ and Jim White’s version of ‘Ant’s on a log’, families saw all the yummy, interesting ways one can enjoy foods of all kinds. It was especially nice to be able to grab a cookie from Farm Fresh or Gluten Free Lucy’s Cookie as a sweet treat.

The third leg of the mall included a great mix of vendors to show healthy lifestyle options. It included a reading area from Apple Tree Kids, Tae Kwon Do from World Champion TKD and personal trainer April Sethman showing how all those unhealthy food affect your body. The Provisional class put together an awesome obstacle course for kids to do fun exercise, even indoors. They showed kids how to jump, crawl and climb to a more active life.

The main attractions for the day were the demonstrations held hourly at the main stage. The kids enjoyed learning how to work out with Richard Harris and Jim White Fitness, Zumba dance and an awesome show of strength, balance and focus from World Champion TKD!A great time was had by all!

Organizational Development Institute 2012: Members Share Their ExperiencesSubmitted by Maura Boswell

“There was an exciting buzz the moment we walked into the conference! We participated in several activities learning about different leadership styles. In this capacity we were able to learn about our personal leadership styles as well as how to collaborate more effectively with others. The opportunity to meet members of other Leagues and learn about their community impacts and fundraising activities is invigorating and will allow us to incorporate ideas for improving the lives of women and children in the South Hampton Roads Community.”Maura Boswell

“After attending ODI, I walked away feeling empowered, inspired and most of all, honored to be part of such an incredible organization of women. I felt privileged for this opportunity and have returned with fresh ideas and excitement for this upcoming League year. It was most interesting to hear what other Leagues are doing to improve their communities, ranging from a focus on human trafficking, to packing food backpacks for children, to planting gardens in local schools. A common theme through the weekend that really hit home was honoring the women who make these communitiesbetter...YOU! I would like to say thank you for all that each of you do for our local League and I look forward to working together this year and finding new ways to honor and inspire each of you to keep doing the fantastic job you do!”Abbe Malone

Amanda Lloyd (provisional), as Chair of Touch-a-Truck, attended the workshops on Diversified Fund Development to learn more innovative and diverse ideas for JLNVB. Carol Scott, consultant, presented great ideas and tips, from when is the best time of year to make the “ask” to having a position or someone in your League dedicated to writing 1-2 grants a month. The group was very focused around events as fundraising tools, which should not be the only or major source of funding—giving natural disasters as an example of event disasters beyond our control. Seeking those corporate sponsorships, endowments, and big donors each year is most important and presenting your cause, why you of all organizations—our Case For Support.

A key component is reaching out to other Leagues around the country to connect and ask what works best for them. All Leagues as a part of AJLI can access the Grants database system, it’s a part of the annual subscription fees. Gift acceptance policies are a good tool to have in place, for example if someone donates artwork or land, what will be the policies and procedures surrounding it? Don’t be afraid to seek outside help or fundraising professionals such as independent consultants, sometimes investing in this can produce big outcomes.

www.JLNVB.org 10

Our major topics covered and discussed were: • Fundraising Methods and Basic Principles • Financial Management • Elements of a Fund Development Plan • Event Fundraising (w/Sample Budgets)• Foundations • Corporate Solicitation• Endowment Funds • Grants• Capital Campaigns • Planned Giving • Ten Basic Fundraising Principles • Various Resources • Databases

“We enjoyed a whirl wind weekend in Dallas that began as a whole group on Friday afternoon. After breaking into smaller groups to focus on our individual tracks Maura and I were able to learn about what other leagues are doing to successfully recruit and retain members as well as how keep sustainers engaged on the Membership Development Track. We were able to gather information from leagues similarly sized the JLNVB, such as the Junior Leagues from Annapolis, MD; Ann Arbor, MI; Northwest AR; Fort Smith, AR, Bakersfield, CA, Wichita, KS and Sarasota, NY.” Betsy Glover

I have already implemented two ideas from ODI with this year’s Provisional Class which include a True Colors Personality/Leadership Style assessment that was done at the March PMM and organizing a panel of Past Presidents to come and speak at our April PMM to share in the excitement as our Provisional Class is voted into active membership this May. I also have a few other ideas I hope to pass along to my Chair-Elect and the Membership Vice President to implement for next year. One idea we can all take away as we head into recruiting season is thinking of a powerful two-minute speech to share with potential new members about your favorite experience as a member of the JLNVB. What has been that one thing that has just touched you more than anything? That will be what sells the JLNVB. Think about it...I’ll be testing you the next time I see you!

Notes About PlacementMember Obligation Fulfillment Are you concerned that hours you have completed are missing from your record or you may not be able to fulfill all of your obligations?

It’s important that any issues be discussed and resolved by April 30, 2013 and the PlacementCommittee (the Placement Chair, the Transition Chair, the Provisional Chair and allAdvisors/Mentors) is here to help.

Here are the steps you should take to ensure your commitments are fulfilled:

1. Check your current obligation fulfillment status by logging in and reviewing your member page on TidewaterNet (www.jlnvb.org)

2. If any hours that you’ve completed are missing, please contact the Chair of that Committee to confirm that hours have been turned in to the JLNVB Web Liaison, Haley Landers, to be posted. If the hours have been turned in and they are still missing from your record, please contact your Advisor or Mentor and let them know: what, when and the time you worked (from when to when) and the event contact. Your Advisor or Mentor is your advocate and will get these issues straightened out for you.

3. If you are concerned that you may not be able to fulfill all of your obligations, you need to let your Advisor or Mentor know as soon as possible so you can work together to come up with a plan. The JLNVB is very accommodating and we try to help each of our members fulfill her obligations in a way that works best with the member’s personal schedule.

Why is the April 30th date so important? Each member’s obligations will be reviewed on April 30th per the Membership Section of the Bylaws, Policies and Procedures (page 27, Section II.F, Failure to Meet Membership Requirements). Following that review, members will be notified via a letter of any outstanding obligations (based on what is recorded in TidewaterNet). Membership Council understands that the record may be incorrect and we depend on you to inform us of any errors. In addition to being notified of any unmet obligations, the options available for fulfilling your outstanding obligations will be listed. If you receive this letter, please keep in mind that it is only intended as a notification of where you stand and what options are available for you. These may include fines and the possibility of working makeup hours. In order to remain in good standing for the 2012-2013 League year, all obligations should be satisfied by May 31, 2013.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact your Advisor or Mentor or Hanan Mitry at [email protected].

Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.11

Member Status Changes Are you Sustaining? Do you need to take a Leave of Absence?

Just a reminder, if you intend to change your status for the upcoming League year, thenyou will need to complete a Change of Status Form by April 30, 2013. This form can be found on TidewaterNet (www.jlnvb.org) in the JLNVB Resources section (under Interactive Forms). Completion of this form automatically notifies the Placement Chair and the Office Manager of your request.

One of them will contact you to further discuss your request. If you have any problems completing the online form, please contact Hanan Mitry at [email protected].
