TO RECEIVE THE BEST LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE FROM YOUR UNDERDECK SYSTEM, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

First, there are four basic types of material available to choose from, including:• Vinyl – a material that does not age well• Galvanized – is steel with a zinc coating that can rust from

the edges• Galvalume – is steel with aluminum and zinc coating, but

it could still rust from the edges over time• Aluminum – offers the best option to avoid rust and

provide superior corrosion resistanceADDITIONALLY, TO HAVE YOUR SYSTEM LAST FOR YEARS TO COME, IT IS IMPORTANT TO:

• Use compatible fasteners to avoid galvanic action (or rust)• Have no obstructions which could cause water damming

and buildup of trash• Have the ability to remove a single panel to access areas

to maintain the system properly

founder’sletter

In the spirit of the New Year, “new” is all around. But

sometimes, even things

that aren’t new can be

changed, updated, spruced

up… “renewed”!

And that renewal doesn’t

have to cost a lot of money.

There are thousands of

Atlantans who showcase

their style at home every

day for less than $1,000.

How do we know? They

tell us! Our popular reader

contest “Decorating on a

Dime” invites readers and

professionals to submit

before and after photos of their favorite transformed space.

From simple updates to total transformations, decorating

can be fun without draining your nances. If you want to

share your amazing budget makeover and participate for a

chance to win in this year’s contest, go to p. 72 for contest

details and prize information. Be sure to follow us on

Facebook for updates.

That spirit of renewal has also touched Atlanta Home

Improvement itself. I recently reacquired this magazine, and

since I am the original owner and founder, I’m bringing both

new energy and time-tested experience to the table. Along

with the longtime management team of Publisher Patti

Stephens and Associate Publisher Jennifer Prins, we have

lots of new ideas and inspiration planned for you in 2015!

Happy Re“new” Year!

Remembering Bob StamperSadly, this month, we lost someone who has been really

special to many of us here at the magazine. Bob Stamper of

the Bob & Rodman radio show supported us every week as he

encouraged his listeners to pick up this very magazine. Bob

believed in us and what we were doing from day one, and he is

someone I will truly never forget. We could not have a bigger

fan, and we felt the same about him. He was brilliant, funny,

loyal and a true friend. We will miss him for years to come.

The Newness editor’sletter

I hear that adage time and again: People Fear Change. Many folks hate it. In fact,

an entire business practice

(called change management)

exists to help people feel more

comfortable with changes.

I don’t get it. Because me? I

love change! Change is fun!

When I rst began working

at Atlanta Home Improvement Magazine last year, I was a bit

intimidated by its history. It’s been going strong for over 10

years and I wanted to honor that long history. Then, a few

months after I started, something unexpected happened.

Original owner/founder of this magazine, Sherri Adair,

ofcially acquired it back.

Magic happened. Sherri brought back an entrepreneurial

spark to this magazine, which was by now an awesome

institution. We now had the best of both worlds: a well

respected, established magazine plus an injection of new

energy. Sherri challenged the whole team to think of new

ways to make our already-awesome magazine even more

useful to our readers, even more fun to read, even more

informative about all hardworking folks who work in the

Atlanta home improvement industry.

And with this issue, dear reader, I think we’ve done just

that. As usual we’ve put together some extremely helpful

features like the storage article on page 59 and the “35

Ways to improve your home for under $1000” on page 66.

But we’re also debuting two new departments.

The rst is our new expert panel. Every month we’ll be

“polling” a panel of home improvement experts with a

question of the month. This month we talked to Atlanta

design experts about the incoming/outgoing trends for

2015. The other new department is our “DIY Blogger Pick of

the Month.” For this exciting new page, we tapped into the

very talented Atlanta blogger network. This month we’re

showing you how to paint a gingham effect on your wall.

Fun, interactive stuff!

Loving the evolving,

20 ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT JANUARY 2015 AtlantaHomeImprovement.com

Our panel of expert designers chime in…

Dear God, please let 2014 be the end of glass tiles. They are over, people! This is also true for the ubiquitous band of accent tile running through tubs and showers across America. Keep it simple!

I hope gray will continue to be the new brown in 2015. Gray seems to be growing in popularity.  I love it!  I’m not suggesting people get rid of the brown they’ve been using. Try combining grays and browns.  Fashion designers have been doing it beautifully for years.  I think it’s very elegant.

Wallpaper is huge! I’m booking wallpaper hangers months in advance now, so I’d say it’s back and better than ever.  Note: I’m not referring to grandma orals and boring stripes. Today, it’s all about natural woven papers, Grasscloth and unusual textures are plentiful.  I also love any wallpaper with a natural craft paper background (brown bag) with a crisp white graphic printed on it.

What we see happening intown is a huge resurgence of renovations of historic homes in the older Atlanta neighborhoods. The younger generation is moving intown en mass. The unique challenge is to preserve the original structure and intent with the main focus on updating bathrooms and kitchens to today’s standards.

Suppliers of vintage xtures, reclaimed lumber and craftspeople who can do the ne work of incorporating original trim and framing with the needs of today’s inhabitants are having a eld day and are in high demand. Fresh ideas and a reverence to the original structure are creating a new design aesthetic in Atlanta.

We are also seeing some of these trends in u-encing new construc-tion both inside and outside of the perimeter as people shy away from the cookie cutter “formula” way of living.  New homes are sporting mid-century and crafts-man in uences.

One thing that’s on its way out is reclaimed wood furniture. When big box stores begin to knock off reclaimed pieces it’s only a matter of time until that race has been run!

Dark stained oors are also on their way out. Espresso, dark walnut and ebony nishes have been a popular trend for several years, so say goodbye to dark colors and hello to lighter natural oors.

Brushed Brass is coming in. Brushed Brass has been around the last several years but 2015 will really be the Year of Brushed Brass. It’ s especially making its debut in lighting and tabletop accessories.

I love seeing the mixture of family heirlooms mixed with modern furniture trending. This creates Scandanavian interiors or “Transitional” interiors. There seems to be more thought about lling your home with collected pieces rather than just buying something to ll a void in your home.

Design trends What’s in – and what’s out – for 2015?

CRAIG DUNCANC. W. Duncan Designs

BARBARA ENGLISHTo The Trade Only

I see modern home design evolving from the white box contemporary - seen as cold and uninviting - to the “soft modern.” This style affords the same spacious oor plan but with gentler lines, more organic materials and warmer palettes.

My clients are all looking for high-tech upgrades and the ability to control their comforts and entertainment from their smart devices. We’re responding by incorporating smart-home ready features into our design like wireless access points, streaming music, television and video surveillance; these systems can grow as technology advances.

ARLENE DEANArlene Dean Quality Homes

My predictions for 2015:

Color & Materials: Smokey shades of gray, soft neutrals, rich leather, marine tones, vibrant jewel and natural tones, even pastels. Metals mixing bronze, copper, steel, and gold with stainless steel and chrome.

Nature: Authentic nishes in rustic wood, stone, glass, organic shapes and patterns, indoor / outdoor furnishings, greenery, woven materials and soft, matte nishes.

Craft: New Appreciation for handmade, “authentic” items. Lighting, furniture, accessories, all customized for the individual project.

Mix It Up: Antiques, recycled items, traditional ethnic colors, patterns and textures, with contemporary design.Remember, trends are cyclical. Your home design is about you. In the words of Coco Chanel, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

A Message from Tom Dwyer President of NARI Atlanta 2015

Congratulations!

You are holding in your hands a directory of companies owned and staffed by some of the most professional men and women in the remodeling industry.

NARI Atlanta is the local branch of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. It is the oldest trade association dedicated strictly to the remodeling industry. NARI’s Core Purpose is to “advance and promote the remodeling industry’s professionalism, product and vital public purpose.”

Why choose a NARI contractor?

Because we have all heard a horror story or two about a remodeling project gone bad. NARI screens its members prior to admission and has a strict Code of Ethics, including an independent review board to investigate homeowner complaints.

NARI also promotes education of its contractors, associate members and the general public in how to qualify as a professional contractor – as well as how to hire a professional contractor. (See NARIAtlanta.org for some great information.)

NARI Atlanta has also begun an initiative to team up with the Work Force Development Project. This project is based in Warner Robins, Georgia, and will become a training facility that will enable returning veterans to enter the remodeling industry.

Finally, this year we have opened an ofce and hired our own staff. We strive to better coordinate all our efforts towards the goals of the association and to better serve our members and the general public. www.NariAtlanta.org | (770) 516-2091

Within our PDI showroom, we repeatedly receive similar questions from customers regarding the ToucH2O faucet. “How does it operate?” “How do I control the temperature?” “Is the faucet easy to install?” and “What kind of batteries does this ToucH20 technology require?” The answer to each of these questions is really quite simple.

Operation: While you may choose to operate this device like any other standard faucet, it is equipped to perform just as well with a touch of your hand or forearm. (Note: If faucet is left on after walking away, it will shut off within 60 seconds).

Temperature: With a handle controlled temperature that can operate manually or in “touch” mode, water temperature settings can remain the same from previous use.

Installation: Similar to any other pull-down kitchen faucet, each free-standing installation connects to wires operational through a AA battery pack. The estimated battery life is 11 months.

While ToucH2O technology has become more popular within the residential home, one of the main benets is the prevention of cross contamination.

Delta’s smart touch technology is thoughtfully designed for responsive control whether you touch the spout or handle. This impressive smart touch technology can even recognize the difference between a touch and a grab.

When making the decision to remodel any room within your home, there is a lot to consider. What is your overall vision? Is the remodel within your budget? What is your speci c style, and how long exactly will it take to complete such a formidable task? With our tips and suggestions, sprucing up any bathroom can indeed be smooth and stress free.

Browse: To get the most of your makeover, rst set aside a time to create an idea book full of found inspiration from websites like Atlanta Home Improvement, Pinterest or Houzz. Visiting showrooms and new subdivision model homes are also wonderful “hands on” sources for ideas.

Color Selection: A neutral color scheme that either includes whites, off-whites, beiges and bones, will guarantee your bathroom as a newfound place of refuge and relaxation. You can always add color with towels, rugs and window treatments.

Size Matters: If you share your retreat, make more room by installing a larger double-sink vanity. These days, bigger truly is better, as larger tiles (with texture and shade) are very much on trend.

Other Considerations: Bathroom remodels can take as little as one week up to three to four weeks. Your bathroom should be considered off limits for the entire time of the installation.

The better prepared you are initially (pictures, budget, plan), the easier and quicker the process will be.

The holidays are over, and you’ve nally taken down all of your festive decorations. If you’re like many homeowners, you now have countless boxes of yuletide trimmings that you need to store away

for nearly a year.

Do you schlep everything down to the basement and try to make room for it there? Is the garage a better option? What about a spare room? The problem is, you probably already have a plethora of other “stuff” that’s taking up that all-important space in your home. If so, then this is the perfect time to examine and create a new storage strategy for the New Year.

Start With Your StuffWhen you start thinking about storage and organization in your home, the only way to begin is by knowing what you have—and deciding whether or not you need everything that’s

there. “People hold onto things that they just don’t need,” says Scott Saffran, owner of The Garage Dude. “So the rst step in any organization project is to declutter.” Taking an inventory of the items you have—and deciding whether or not you can throw out or donate things you don’t need—will give you a good foundation for developing an effective storage plan.

What To Do With What’s Left “Deep storage should only be used for items you rarely need

to access or items you have no intention of unpacking,”

says Monica Ricci, CPO, owner of Catalyst Organizing. Items

that fall into these categories include off-season clothing,

holiday decorations, food preparation items (often used for

holidays or entertaining), historic and family memorabilia

(including photographs), sports or camping equipment,

oversized or large luggage and more.

When deciding what to put into deep storage within your home, certied professional organizer Claire Kurtz, owner of The Well-Organized Woman, recommends that you identify items that you rarely need access to or only use during specic times of the year.

“What you are trying to avoid is letting something that is used once a year (or rarely used) dominate space in your everyday living space,” she notes. “Instead, think of a space that is clean and safe where you can store those items once you’ve properly protected them from dust and the elements.” Suellen Germani, professional organizing consultant and owner of Creative Order, adds that a good gauge is whether an item is used less than once a month. She notes, “If it’s only a few times per year, then it’s probably best stored in deep storage.”

A Home Within Your HomeMain living areas like the kitchen, bedrooms, family room and ofce obviously won’t make the best locales for deep storage items. The attic, the basement, a spare room, the garage and a shed (if you have one) are ideal. Yet, not everything can be tucked away in just any of these spaces. Each area will make the perfect home for specic items; you simply need to know what should go where.

The AtticWhile the popular perception is that the attic is a great place to store items you don’t use every day, it’s actually one of the least favorable options in your home. “The attic is not my favorite location to store things in the house,” Kurtz asserts. “I nd the temperature variations to be very extreme between summer and winter.”

Ricci agrees; however, she notes that there are ways to make the attic a viable alternative for your storage needs. “If you must store things in an attic, be sure they’re items made

of materials such as glass or ceramic,” she recommends. According to Germani, the attic is a great place for suitcases, as well as holiday decorations, off-season clothing, memorabilia that is not temperature sensitive and old tax documents that you need to keep in case of an audit. The key for the latter items is to place them in airtight, clear or opaque plastic containers that snap shut and are well labeled. Never use cardboard boxes to store items in the attic; they can attract pests. Additionally, don’t store temperature-sensitive items like photos, candles, vinyl records or old paint in the attic.

If you do decide to use your attic space, be sure to keep a few other tips in mind. Attic ooring should be sturdy so you can get into the space and access your items. “Walking on and across trusses just isn’t a safe way to navigate the attic,” Ricci says. Lay down plywood or Attic Dek ooring tiles to create a solid surface. Germani also suggests that you check the pull-down attic stairs to make sure they’re safe and function well. Finally, according to Kurtz, the attic should be well lit so you can see what you’re doing; Ricci recommends using high-wattage light bulbs to improve visibility.

The BasementThe type of basement you have will dictate the types of items you can store there. According to Ricci, “If your basement is below grade, you could experience moisture issues, so only store items there that won’t be affected by dampness, such as durable housewares or baby equipment you’re storing for your next child. If your basement is above grade and climate controlled, it’s likely safe to store almost anything in there.” Kurtz points to oversized luggage,

GUEST ROOM: Make your clutter cuter. Clever shelves put it in its place.

ATTIC: Get it up and off the floor with tidy storage shelving and racks.

SHED: The great outdoors gets organized with a spacious shed.

While the idea of packing items

away at an off-site storage facility

is tempting, it might not be the

best decision. “Sometimes, off-site

storage ends up being a place

to off-load stuff you will likely

never use or need again,” Suellen

Germani says.

While off-site storage can be great

for short-term needs, such as

during a renovation or for staging

a home to sell, long-term deep

storage should be kept in the

home. According to Claire Kurtz,

“Simply storing items that you

don’t know what to do with or

can’t bear to let go of can be very

hard on your bank account and

psyche when you realize two years

down the road that you’ve paid far

more than the value of the item to

store it for no strong reason.”

rarely accessed collections (like record albums or baseball cards), specic-use sports equipment and tools, among other items, as options.

Many of the principles that apply to attic storage also are applicable in the basement. However, moisture can pose a big challenge in practically any basement. For the presence of general dampness, Germani recommends using a dehumidier to even out moisture levels. In addition, there is always a possibility of water leaks or ooding in a basement; Ricci suggests not storing anything directly on the oor. Instead go vertical with shelving and raise items off the ground. Also, use plastic containers instead of cardboard—just like the attic—to keep items protected from water and pests. Saffran endorses the use of plastic containers while offering an additional tip. “Use colored bins, such as orange bins for Halloween items and red and green bins for Christmas decorations,” he says. “It helps you stay organized by giving you a visual cue; you’ll be able to nd what you’re looking for much more easily.”

The Spare Room

Like most homeowners, you probably use a spare room in your home as a guest room. However, you may want to reconsider. “A room inside the home is always going to be better for storing delicate or extremely meaningful items that cannot and should not withstand temperature and moisture extremes,” Kurtz asserts. Printed photographs, artwork, anything made of paper or fabric, candles, special occasion clothing, bed linens and gift wrapping supplies can all be stored in closets in a spare room, Ricci says. Yet, you can go beyond the closets as well. “Unless you have house guests more than once a month, build your spare guest room around your space and storage needs—not around guest needs,” Ricci continues.

“Don’t ll the space with a bed unless you have overnight guests at least quarterly,” Germani contends. “Otherwise, the bed becomes a catch-all for everything in the house that might not yet have a home.” Of course, you can still accommodate visitors when necessary. A pullout couch, futon or blow-up bed can provide comfortable sleeping arrangements for relatives and friends while not taking up too much space.

The Shed

“If your shed is a structural shell without insulation, it’s almost like outdoor storage, so it’s best for things like garden tools and chemicals, camping items and sports equipment,” Ricci notes. A shed is a great location for a lawn mower or other large outdoor maintenance items. Of course, this area can get extremely cluttered if items are tossed in and left for later. “Don’t just pile things in a shed without using stackable containers and shelving,” Germani says. “You will never use what is stored in the back of the shed if you cannot conveniently access it.”

You also may not even know what you have if you keep piling things into the shed. “Organization and the ability to see what you have will help you avoid buying multiples of the basics,” Kurtz states. “Many people cannot nd items when they need them and immediately buy more of the same.” So, a storage shed can either be a money saver or a money pit, depending on how you use it.

The Garage

Many homeowners use the garage as a key storage area in the home, placing everything from kids’ toys, sporting equipment and holiday decorations to beach and pool

PROTECT IT! Stor-Pod™ Shelf Enclosure creates a fully enclosed storage area and protects items from dust, bugs and moisture.

PRESERVE IT! Acid-Free Resealable Bags protect heirlooms like artwork, photos, collectible cards and more.

CONTAIN IT! Nalgene® Rectangular Leakproof Bottle is made from durable plastic and features a laboratory-quality seal.

Although it seems that the garage is the best place for certain items like paint and gasoline, experts warn against this common practice. “The garage is one of the worst places to store cans of paint,” Saffran says. “It needs to be kept in a cool, dry place—so consider storing it in the basement.” Ricci adds gasoline in closed containers to the list of items that should not be kept in the garage, a shed (or anywhere in the home, for that matter). She says, “Gasoline is a volatile chemical which produces vapor, and it must vent in order to be stored safely.”

items and home repair and gardening tools. But, as Saffran notes, that really shouldn’t be the goal for the space. “The goal for the garage should be to park two cars inside,” he says. The space that’s left over can then be used for storage. But that’s where things get tricky.

Typically, the garage isn’t going to be the most ideal space for most deep storage. For instance, while holiday décor is only used once a year, Saffran reveals that nearly one quarter of the garage is taken up by Christmas decorations in many homes. People end up tripping over their festive trimmings every day on the way to their car. That space could be put to better use. Instead, consider using the basement as an alternative for items like holiday décor and allot that real estate in the garage for other things. Design a storage plan with wall-mounted shelving units that allow you to make the most of vertical space and avoid the pitfalls of simply stacking items like rakes, brooms and golf clubs in corners (which can collect dust and attract insects). And, as Saffran recommends, create zones so kids’ toys aren’t right next to dangerous tools.

No Dumping

No matter what area of the home you are using for deep storage, it’s important to keep one thing in mind. “Do not use these areas as a dumping ground or repository for items you can’t make a decision on about whether you want to keep them or not,” Kurtz concludes. Just as you do with your main living areas, think long and hard about what items you have and where they are best suited to live in your home. If you do, you’ll be able to keep your most cherished “stuff” safe and protected—and enjoy it for years to come.

Editorial Resources begin on page 76.

Putting items in deep storage in your home can make your main living spaces feel open and clean. But don’t forget about those areas where you tucked everything away. According to Claire Kurtz, “It is a very good idea to have your pest control provider check these areas every quarter just to catch and treat any emerging pest issues. Then quickly maintain over time with a sweep and a dust totaling 10 minutes or less twice a year.” What’s more, Suellen Germani adds, “The cleaning process re-familiarizes you with what you have stored in the space and gives you an opportunity to purge what you realize is no longer relevant or of use to you and your family.”

35 Waysto Refresh your Home

Get creative, Atlantans! As you take

down your holiday decorations and

ready your home for the New Year,

we’ve got some great ideas to refresh its

look. These ideas are not only going to

perk up your home decor, they’ll also be

easy on your bank account!

Give your front door a new hue. Give your home a new first-

impression look with a bold or soft color. “Five of the colors that

I believe will find their ways to many front doors in 2015 are bold

and influenced by cross-cultural experience, such as Bronze Tone (by Benjamin Moore) and Tripoli

Sand (by Pratt & Lambert),” says Kate Smith, chief color maven for Therma-Tru Doors and president

of Sensational Color. She also suggests Sherwin-Williams’

Frank Blue or Nifty Turquoise (shown) or Behr’s Cranapple. For a softer, calmer door color, Smith

recommends Behr’s Night Shade, Pittsburgh Paints’ Wright

Blue Mist, Valspar’s Drizzling Mist,

Benjamin Moore’s Amazon Soil or Pratt & Lambert’s Thyme

Green. ($13–$26)

Refresh your walkway: Repave that cracked walkway or install new pavers and edging stones. (Under $900)

Add new house numbers that reflect your home’s architectural style, recommends

Atlanta-based marketing professional Sylvia Small. ($15–$20)

Add a fresh coat of paint to your entryway or foyer—“It will create an instant

impression and give the illusion of a larger space,” says Egypt Sherrod,

Atlanta-based host of HGTV’s Property Virgins and founder of The Egypt Sherrod Real Estate Group. She

notes that lighter paint colors will make the space feel larger, and

“the color gray has become the new neutral, whereas in the past shades of taupe, brown or cream colors

were considered fresh and neutral.” Sherrod

recommends using an airy shade of gray like Sherwin-Williams’ A New

Gray or Dove Gray. “A classic yellow can give a home instant personality as well,” she adds. ($13–$26)

Make new pillows for your sofa or bedroom using decorative cloth dinner napkins.

“Dinner napkins are ideal to make pillows

with because they are already shaped for a pillow and the edges are finished,” says Shelly Dozier-

Mckee, author of the blog ConfettiStyle. ($20 for materials

to make three to four pillows)

Power wash your front entrance to clean and

brighten the area. ($20–$35 an hour

for a power-washer rental)

Pressure wash and seal your driveway. You’d be amazed at how much brighter and cleaner

your exterior appears with a

sparkling clean driveway. (Under

$200)

Buy a new doormat for your front entry to update its look. ($20)

Add pattern to plain cotton curtains by using a stencil

and spray paint. “Spray paint comes in so many colors!”

Vickers says. ($6–$20)

Have custom curtains made. Find your fabric by visiting Marietta’s Fabric & Fringe Warehouse or browse FabricsAndFringe.com

($150- $450)

Change out your

table linens to revive your dining room, suggests Haley Morgan with MODA

Floors & Interiors. ($15–$30)

Create an accent wall. Rooms with fi replaces or bookshelves already have

natural focal points; so choose those areas for the

accent wall. For professional help

in selecting colors and getting the job done, visit NorthHighlandPaint.com

($13 and up for paint only)

Add architectural detail to plain slab doors or walls with moulding kits. Luxe Architectural’s kits, available online at www.luxe-architectural.com, provide assembled, primed and painted moulding with special adhesive on the back that takes the place of nailing or gluing. ($69.99)

Add pattern to plain walls with a creativity and Frogtape. Atlantan Rhoda Vickers, author of Southern Hospitality Blog, created a gingham print on her wall using paint that was one shade darker than the base color mixed with glaze—all for the cost of only a quart of paint and Frogtape. ($25–$30) (Want to know how to DIY your own gingham wall? Turn to p. 78)

Replace a piece of artwork with an inexpensive mirror. “Mirrors are great during the colder months to enhance the lighting in a room and make it feel brighter,” Dozier-Mckee says. To make the most of a mirror, place it opposite

a window so it refl ects the natural light coming into the home. Mirror shown

available at Ikea.com. ($20–$40)

Install wallpaper. Atlanta designers all agree that wallpaper is coming back in…in a big

way! Avoid the grandma look by steering clear of the old school fussy fl orals. Instead look into

newer trendier styles like larger, overscaled patterns and grasscloth. ($400-$1000,

depending on wall and room size)

Renew hardwood fl oors by adding a glossy coat of Quick Shine fl oor cleaner and fi nish. “It will give your hardwoods a glossy, polished fi nish and keep it looking shiny for about 2 to 3 weeks,” Sherrod says. ($9.49 per bottle)

Hire a Flooring Pro. If your hardwoods are looking sad and need more TLC than a just quick polish, hiring a pro might be more affordable than you think. Many installers are also adept at fi xing scratches and buckling and giving a new life to an older fl oor. ($700-$900)

Re-mat artwork. “If you have dusty old canvas art or portraits,

give them new life by adding sleek matting,” Sherrod says. “You can even double mat with a texture to give the artwork more interest.”

35 Ways

to Refresh

your Home

Reupholster your favorite armchair or couch: One of the simplest ways to

upgrade the look of your living space is to get your main seating area completely

reupholstered. ($400-$1000)

Refinish old or beat-up chairs with spray paint. “A few cans will

do it,” Vickers says. ($15–$20)

Organize your shoes. “Do you find yourself

walking into a pile of dirty

shoes every time you

walk through

the front door?” Nichol

asks. “Keep

them corralled

with a basket—it will

keep your floors clean and prevent tripping.” ($20)

Replace the blades of a ceiling fan to update its look. You can find new blades online, or you can paint your current blades. “Many

people don’t realize you can even paint the metal finish of a fan,” Sherrod notes. “If it’s an

outdated gold-plated finish, you can always paint it a silver or pewter metallic.” ($13–$26)

Did one of your holiday gifts come in a nice box? Repurpose it into a magazine and mail holder, as

Small did with this wooden wine box. (Free)

Install new pendant or recessed lighting.

Bad lighting can ruin the look of any

room, no matter how nice the décor.

Get rid of your harsh overhead

fluorescents and have recessed

lighting installed. Or install dramatic,

colorful pendant lights over your island for a real

pop of new style. Pendant light shown available at Builders

Specialites.Net or multiple Atlanta

locations. ($900-$1000)

Change out the hardware on your kitchen or bath cabinets. Sherrod calls this “room jewelry,” noting

that it can really change the look of a space. “Look for brushed nickel or chrome if you want to modernize,” she says, noting that the least

expensive place to find new hardware is the fabric store. ($1–$2 per piece)

Spray paint any mismatching doorknobs with a can of Rust-oleum. “I did this for all of my knobs,” Bowling says. “It’s a small tweak, but it makes the whole house feel so cohesive.” ($8)

Refinish your bathtub. Even the grittiest old bathtub can often find new life with a professional refinishing job. ($400-$500)

“New rugs transform

the flavor of a room,” says

Linda Castle with Decorated

Designs. You can find inexpensive

rugs at stores known for bargains, such

as IKEA and Target. ($25–$40) Rug shown

available at Ikea.com.

Hire a Professional Organizer: The best way to reduce stress (and add light!) in your home is to clear the clutter. If you are overwhelmed by where to start, consider hiring a professional organizer to come in help you with your battle plan. ($400-$600)

Install an aromatherapy diffuser in your shower to amp up your bath’s spa

appeal. The ESSIO diffuser can attach to your existing

showerhead and comes with three

essential-oil pods. ($49.99) EssioShower.com

Give a freestanding

bathroom cabinet a

custom aesthetic with a can of bright paint. “I’d dress up my vanity with a punch of cheerful yellow, like Benjamin Moore’s Yellow Raincoat, to contrast my charcoal gray walls,” Bowling says. She notes that the current black cabinet color looks too “big-box store” for her taste. ($13–$26)

Refinish a vanity countertop or tub surround for a fresh look. Rust-oleum offers a paint-on product that will make your bathroom feel like new. ($26)

Repurpose a clear-glass candleholder with a few pebbles and an artificial succulent. “Works great in areas where light is an issue or you don’t want to get water on your furniture,” Small

How to Tackle Your Long-Term Deep Storage NeedsDEEP THOUGHTS

By Amy Meadows

BARBARA ENGLISHTo The Trade Only

I see modern home design evolving from the white box contemporary - seen as cold and uninviting - to the “soft modern.” This style affords the same spacious oor plan but with gentler lines, more organic materials and warmer palettes.

My clients are all looking for high-tech upgrades and the ability to control their comforts and entertainment from their smart devices. We’re responding by incorporating smart-home ready features into our design like wireless access points, streaming music, television and video surveillance; these systems can grow as technology advances.

35 Waysto Refresh your Home

Get creative, Atlantans! As you take

down your holiday decorations and

ready your home for the New Year,

we’ve got some great ideas to refresh its

look. These ideas are not only going to

perk up your home decor, they’ll also be

easy on your bank account!

Give your front door a new hue. Give your home a new first-

impression look with a bold or soft color. “Five of the colors that

I believe will find their ways to many front doors in 2015 are bold

and influenced by cross-cultural experience, such as Bronze Tone (by Benjamin Moore) and Tripoli

Sand (by Pratt & Lambert),” says Kate Smith, chief color maven for Therma-Tru Doors and president

of Sensational Color. She also suggests Sherwin-Williams’

Frank Blue or Nifty Turquoise (shown) or Behr’s Cranapple. For a softer, calmer door color, Smith

recommends Behr’s Night Shade, Pittsburgh Paints’ Wright

Blue Mist, Valspar’s Drizzling Mist,

Benjamin Moore’s Amazon Soil or Pratt & Lambert’s Thyme

Green. ($13–$26)

Refresh your walkway: Repave that cracked walkway or install new pavers and edging stones. (Under $900)

Add new house numbers that reflect your home’s architectural style, recommends

Atlanta-based marketing professional Sylvia Small. ($15–$20)

Add a fresh coat of paint to your entryway or foyer—“It will create an instant

impression and give the illusion of a larger space,” says Egypt Sherrod,

Atlanta-based host of HGTV’s Property Virgins and founder of The Egypt Sherrod Real Estate Group. She

notes that lighter paint colors will make the space feel larger, and

“the color gray has become the new neutral, whereas in the past shades of taupe, brown or cream colors

were considered fresh and neutral.” Sherrod

recommends using an airy shade of gray like Sherwin-Williams’ A New

Gray or Dove Gray. “A classic yellow can give a home instant personality as well,” she adds. ($13–$26)

Make new pillows for your sofa or bedroom using decorative cloth dinner napkins.

“Dinner napkins are ideal to make pillows

with because they are already shaped for a pillow and the edges are finished,” says Shelly Dozier-

Mckee, author of the blog ConfettiStyle. ($20 for materials

to make three to four pillows)

Power wash your front entrance to clean and

brighten the area. ($20–$35 an hour

for a power-washer rental)

Pressure wash and seal your driveway. You’d be amazed at how much brighter and cleaner

your exterior appears with a

sparkling clean driveway. (Under

$200)

Buy a new doormat for your front entry to update its look. ($20)

6 Simple Steps

78 ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT JANUARY 2015 AtlantaHomeImprovement.com

diybloggerspickofthemonthHow to Paint a Gingham WallThis month we are debuting an exciting new series! We know that - for most home improvement jobs - you need to

hire a pro. But for the smaller projects, you can “DIY it” and have a little fun along the way. So we’ve reached out some

wonderful Atlanta bloggers and in the coming months we’ll bring you project each month. This is our rst!

1Measure your wall and decide how

many horizontal stripes you want to paint. For instance, my ceilings are 8’ tall and I used 12˝ stripes for my wall.  Keep in mind that every other stripe will be painted.

2Using a laser level, create pencil marks across the wall to create a line that will guide you when you tape the

wall. Once you’ve made the marks go back with a long level or yardstick and connect them so that you will have one continuous line.

3Tape off the walls with FrogTape or

painter’s tape. You will tape outside the lines that will be painted, so make a note of that as you are taping. You will paint 4 lines total.

4Mix up 2 parts clear glaze with 1 part paint and using a small foam roller, paint the lines on your wall.

Paint right over the edge of the tape and immediately tear off the painters tape from the wall. The glaze will make the paint translucent, which is what you want. Let the stripes dry well.

5Measure and tape the vertical stripes

next, using the same method as above. You will end up with more stripes to paint vertically than you did horizontally.

6Mix up more paint and glaze as directed above and paint every other stripe vertically. The resulting squares

will be darker, which creates the gingham effect. As soon as you are nished painting the stripes, tear off the tape. Let the wall dry well and you are nished!

As a pioneer in the home blogging community, Rhoda Vickers is a thrifting diva who frequented second hand shops long before it was cool. She loves sharing creative home projects and does so daily on her blog, SouthernHospitalityBlog.com. Rhoda pulled together a talented team of bloggers and events planner and kicked off a home/DIY blogging conference in 2012 in Atlanta called Haven, which is now going into its 4th year.
