Shijun cares about everything that could touch off an old days feeling: ancient poetry with implied meaning, ancient pottery with rough and simple

design, flying faeries on the ancient Silk Road. Indeed, Shijun seems to look back into space-time while her paintings spring forward into our time to bring us images of deep and profound souls glimmering in soft, golden light. In Shijun’s art it is impossible to discern the real from the imagined or the ancient from what is now.

It may be that Shijun’s quiet life and gentle heart have enabled her to express dreams and emotions lost or hidden to the rest of mankind. She brings forth vivid images of life that draw us deep into thought and wonder and into a realm where we ourselves become lost in worlds full of bright color and soft light.

Shijun is blessed with an artist’s eye and a poet’s heart. Whether painting in oil or traditional Chinese painting, she is forever delighted by the results which seem to spring from a deep and ancient well that forms her artist’s palette. Her muse gives her a love for oriental simplicity of form.

Shijun was born and raised in Foshan, an old town in the south of China full of history and famous for an active aesthetic nature. She is a graduate of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts 1987. Shijun is a recipient of numerous awards for her artistic achievements in both painting and art instruction. Shijun has lived in the Atlanta area since early 2003 with her husband and numerous

pets. She teaches art classes at Callanwolde Arts Center in Atlanta and at her studio located in Lilburn.

Shijun’s friend and art collector Patty Hutton says, “Thank you for your beautiful images. This world of ours needs people like you who create inspiring art that lifts us up. Your paintings will bring me much joy for years and years to come.”

By Nicholas Carson

Hi! My name is Nicholas and I’m 11 years old. I want to tell you about Act3 Productions—what it is, what I’m doing

there and why I wanted to do it.Act3 Productions is a theater company that

presents all sorts of plays starring adults and kids. This year, Act3 has new classes for children and teenagers, and I’m taking the kids’ musical theater class. I’m the only boy in the class, which was a little disappointing at fi rst, but we have a male teacher, Mr. Joe, who is awesome, so it’s OK. I signed up because I wanted to feel more comfortable on stage and also because I love drama and performing.

We have four teachers. The fi rst is Miss Michelle (Peck). She’s really funny and has a spectacular singing voice. Next is Miss Johnna (Mitchell), who also sings very well, but she’s best at dancing. Miss Aubrey (Turnbull) is the youngest teacher. She’s helping Miss Johnna teach us the dance steps and she’s good. Mr. Joe (Arnotti) is super funny and gets along with everybody. He’s also an awesome dancer, which is kind of surprising, since he’s a pretty big guy.

We’re learning how to sing, dance and act. Everyone has a chance to be a soloist. It’s OK if you don’t want to, the teachers are nice to you either way. For the fi nal class, we’ll perform for our friends and family. I’m excited about that!

Last week, we had a lesson in Actor’s Perspective and learned about Stage Left, Stage Right and Center Stage. It’s the opposite if you’re in the audience, except for Center Stage, of course. Mr. Joe took the class on a backstage tour and showed us how the actors move from the stage to their dressing rooms.

My parents say it’s good for me to try new things and taking the class at Act3 Productions is really new for me. I was a little nervous the fi rst day, but it turned out to be so much fun I felt comfortable very quickly. Maybe you’ll see me on stage some day! www.act3productions.org

T he Georgia State University School of Music and the Rialto Center for the Arts present the 15th

annual Gala Holiday Concert on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 2, 2012 at 3 p.m. at the Rialto Center for the Arts. This year’s performances will feature traditional holiday favorites as well as music with an international twist—celebrating the School of Music’s international initiatives and involvement in the community.

Over 200 student and faculty musicians will perform as part of this university-wide celebration of the season, including members of the University Symphony Orchestra, Choruses and Jazz Band and faculty and student soloists. Conductors Michael Palmer, Gordon Vernick, Robert J. Ambrose and Deanna Joseph will lead the musicians in a potpourri of works by Duke Ellington, Tchaikovsky, Handel and others. The program will conclude with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols, a magnifi cent work written for baritone, chorus, and orchestra. Other selections will highlight the musical traditions of China and Brazil, featuring School of Music students performing works from their native lands.

Back by popular demand, the concerts will

again feature a special presentation of African dance and percussion by students from the Charles Drew R. Charter School. The School of Music has had a partnership with the Drew Charter School, located in the East Lake neighborhood of Atlanta, since 2006, thanks to a generous, multi-year grant from the Cousins Foundation, Inc. The School of Music/ Drew Charter School partnership has twice been awarded funding through the Race to the Top program to help create one of Georgia’s fi rst STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) models of education.

“These annual performances are a way for us to celebrate with our entire GSU family, and the Atlanta community,” said W. Dwight Coleman, director of the School of Music and artistic director of the performances. “What better way to usher in the holiday season than with the glorious sounds of our students, faculty and guests on stage at the Rialto.”

Tickets range from $22-$48 (Georgia State students, faculty and staff may receive 1/2 price tickets with ID) and are available in person at the Rialto Center Box Offi ce, by calling 404-413-9TIX or online at www.rialtocenter.org. Free parking is provided for this event at the Equitable Building deck on Fairlie Street.

HEAR THE MUSIC, CLOSE YOUR EYES, FEEL THE RHYTHMfLASHDANCE—THE MUSICAL IS LIVE oN STAGE

Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, FLASHDANCE is donning the torn shirts and leg warmers once again as it leaps off the screen and onto the stage this January. Based on the iconic 1983 movie that revolutionized a generation, FLASHDANCE will launch in Pittsburgh, the

Steel City where the story unfolds, and will continue on to over 20 cities during its fi rst season on tour. An additional company will launch on the Great White Way in August of 2013. With dance playing a signifi cant part in today’s culture (Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, Glee to name a few), this new stage production couldn’t be more relevant.

FLASHDANCE tells the inspiring and unforgettable story of Alex Owens, a working-class girl from Pittsburgh with a dream of becoming a professional dancer. She works by day as a steel mill welder, and a bar dancer at night while aspiring to be accepted at a prestigious ballet academy. When Alex catches the eye of her boss Nick Hurley, their romance shows her the meaning of love and drives her ambition to pursue her dream.

The musical features a book by Tom Hedley, who co-wrote the original screenplay, and Robert Cary. In fact, Hedley originally intended for the story to unfold on the Broadway stage thirty years ago before Hollywood snatched up the property.

Fellow maniacs, never fear: the show will include iconic songs from the fi lm such as the Academy Award-winning hits, “Flashdance—What a Feeling,” “Maniac,” “Gloria,” “Manhunt” and “I Love Rock & Roll,” as well as 16 new songs for the stage production. Robbie Roth has written the music with lyrics by Cary and Roth. At the helm as director and choreographer is Sergio Trujillo (Choreographer of Jersey Boys, Memphis, and The Addams Family and many others).

“There are so many elements that are iconic from the movie that we have assimilated into the production,” said director Sergio Trujillo. “I want audiences to walk away feeling the way I did when I saw the movie—I wanted to dance!”

“The new work we’ve already seen Sergio create in the studio is downright brilliant. He’s come up with new ways of storytelling through dance that bring you immediately to the heart of this iconic story of a girl with a dream in a way I’ve never seen,” said producer Marc Routh. “And we all remember where we were when we fi rst heard these hit songs, they bring you back to a place in time. ... We can’t wait for audiences to embrace this new musical across the country.”

Set in a world made of steel and stone, this high-impact production fi lled with all styles of dance is not to be missed. WHAT A FEELING!!

“Choices”, from DreamCatcher Productions, delves deep into the journey of two married couples, as they travel through the minefi eld of infi delity, with all the secrets, thrills, heartbreak and betrayals it brings. It takes a

hard look at some of the big questions, too: Is cheating inevitable in a long-term relationship? Are marriages meant to last forever? What happens when we marry the wrong person? What happens when we make life-long decisions in order to keep “others” happy? Using the lens of marriage, “Choices” examines life circumstances, the choices we make, and their impacts on our lives. LITTTE WoMEN: A timeless classic. A well loved story. A musical for all.

FABREFACTION THEATRE COMPANY presents “Little Women” – a musical based on Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel of the same title. Set in New England during the Civil War, Reverend March is away ministering to the Federal troops. He leaves behind in Concord, Massachusetts matriarch Mrs. March (Marmee) with their four daughters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy who through the course of the musical turn from young girls into women. Jo is headstrong, tomboy like, passionate and an aspiring writer. Despite her protestations she works for her wealthy Aunt March as a lady’s companion bringing in much needed funds for the family. In her spare time she writes stories in the little attic room, dreaming of becoming a famous writer. It is Jo who puts pen to paper and weaves the tale of her sister’s trials and tribulations as they grow up experiencing poverty, love, friendship and the importance of family.

This well loved story is a celebration of women breaking the mold and achieving success both in work and life. The show explores themes of family, ambition, the struggle of poverty, and well before its time this tale fi ghts for women’s rights to work as well as publish books in their own name. This poignant and timeless classic is the perfect holiday show for the entire family.
