The event will also offer interactive sessions led by outstanding presenters. The program proposals we received were amazing, but the selection committee finally chose the topics of building and strengthening partnerships, improving youth-centered decision making, conducting needs assessments, including youth in program evaluation, and negotiating change on a community-wide scale. Each session will be tailored to address both youth (ages 10-24) and adults at all levels of the partnership process.

Finally, there will be numerous activities throughout the three days to help partners get to know each other better and simply have fun! So, the stage is set for an incredible show of learning and sharing of expertise, new ideas, and effective interventions. I’m so pleased you’re here to participate and contribute to the richness of this Community Partner event.

However, youth and adult equity in the decision making process isn’t just about a relationship status; it’s a discipline we must practice. This workshop will help adults learn how to resist the urge to overrule decisions made by youth, identify opportunities to share decision making power with youth, create an environment that ensures youth have decision-making power and are centered in the organization by developing intentional positive decision making activities. Participants will engage in experiential activities and will be provided with a reading list to continue their learning and engage-ment activities designed to assist in building au-thentic and ethical relationships with youth and the broader community.Corliss Outley, PhD, Associate Department Head and Professor, TAMU Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism Sciences

#TYANAcademy19 Youth-Adult Partnership Presentations

Wednesday, August 14Each team attending the TYAN Community Leadership Academy has their own story about youth engage-ment and their own point of view.

• You may have a well-established Youth-Adult Partnership – or you may just be getting started.• Your organization may seek out input from young people – or you may be a lone voice trying to

introduce new ways of thinking.• You may have exciting ideas to integrate youth voice – or you may have learned lessons through

challenges or setbacks.

On the last day of the TYAN Community Leadership Academy, we want you to take the lead and tell us more so that others can learn from your experience! The following pages will help you prepare.

YOUR MISSION: Choose any aspect of youth engagement that your team can identify with. On Wednesday morning you will have a half-hour to refine your presentation, and then each team will have 12 minutes to share it.

The aim is to inspire new thinking, generate insights, reveal your unique viewpoint, and connect with your peer sites in the TYAN Network. You might:

• Tell a STORY from your own experience• Pass along something you have LEARNED or give ADVICE from your own experience• Get feedback from others on an IDEA • Ask a QUESTION for the group • Share your FEARS, HOPES, and AMBITIONS for your YAP• Or SOMETHING ELSE entirely!

Focus on whatever feels right for your team. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking, but be creative!

• Bringing youth and/or caring adults together• Creating a vision and a plan for your work• Structuring leadership opportunity for youth• Youth adult partnership operation • Keeping youth adult partnership members involved and engaged • Planning and decision-making• Sustainability over the long term• Engaging community stakeholders• Assessing needs and opportunities in your focus area• Or SOMETHING ELSE entirely!

Work with your team to communicate your viewpoint any way you choose. For example, you might:

• Tell your story verbally• Make a poster• Create a Powerpoint • Do a skit• Ask the audience • Do a Q&A

Most of all, HAVE FUN! 11
