Auxiliary Hi-Lites September/October 2016 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 3 Letter from the President’s Desk Hello Auxiliary members, I hope you all had a most enjoyable summer. It does go by fast, however, in another month we will be seeing God’s beauty as the trees begin to change. First on the agenda is to thank you all again for the hours you give to Good Samaritan Hospital. My gratitude comes from my heart. Speaking of the heart, I want to make our volunteers aware of the “Heart Screening Special Offer.” Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital is offering a $49 (self-pay) heart screening. There is no preparation, non-invasive, physician order not needed. Early detection of heart disease is so important. The cost is minimal, many could spend as much on a dinner but the difference is that the test could save your life. The screenings are offered at two facilities, Advocate Good Samaritan, 3815 Highland Ave. and 7530 S Woodward Ave., Woodridge. The phone number is 630-275-8571. I have included information in this newsletter. Place the information by your phone for a reminder to make that important CALL. This special has been extended until October 31 st . Look what is happening for Festival 2016! It’s the Mad Hatter’s Ball so “Don a Mad Hat and don’t be late. Mark your calendar for a very important date.” October 15, 2016 is the date, Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort is the place. This is such an enjoyable event, decadent dinner, exciting auction, so put your Mad Hat on and take the dance floor as well. The website for tickets is advocategiving.org/festival. See you there. Included in this newsletter, Jo Amick, Vice President Development, has given us an update on the Capital Campaign, “Journey of Excellence.” I think it is especially noteworthy that no gift is too small! A gift may be spread over five years and you select the installment payment dates. This is a plus to the giving experience. Our next General Meeting will be held on September 28, 2016. You will find a flier for this event in the newsletter. I welcome everyone, bring a friend. It is always a nice way to catch up with friends, meet new ones and enjoy a great lunch. Remember, I am always open to questions or concerns. My phone and e-mail are in the handbook and I would welcome your call. Carol Kennedy Auxiliary President

At 1:00 p.m. Carol Kennedy, President, called the business meeting to order. She recognized the past presidents in attendance: Annette Goetz, Bob Hurdle, Cheryl Kehl, Ruth Anne Unik, and Donna Wadycki. Dorothy Paige stated that the minutes of the March 23, 2016 General Meeting were printed in the May/June issue of the Auxiliary Hi-Lites newsletter. Linda Breagel made a motion to approve the minutes as printed, Steven Leonardi seconded the motion and all were in favor. Dorothy presented the Treasurer’s Report in the absence of Jean Harlow, Treasurer. As of May 25, the Checking Account balance was $7,102 and the Money Market Account balance was $66,182. Carol reported on the upcoming events at the Daisy Basket and encouraged everyone to stop by. Tiffany Gardley, Volunteer Services Manager, presented the Gingham Tree report stating they will have a 15% off sale on fur items. Carol stated that the Gingham Tree and the Daisy Basket continue to work hard to support our pledge as well as Ways and Means (Ed Ptacek and Tom Brown, co-chairs) with the shoe, scrubs, linen and book sales. She mentioned the work of ARK (Lynn Murphy and Dolores Kondrashow, co-chairs) whose ladies make the baby caps and knit baby blankets that are sold in the gift shop. She acknowledged the work of Maureen Budinger and all those involved with the Vintage Fashion Show. Carol stated that, in her new role as President, she feels blessed to be a part of the Auxiliary and Good Samaritan. She asked the group to call or email her with their suggestions or concerns and ideas for speakers or entertainment for our next two General Meetings. She closed her comments with a quote, “When you are surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible”. The next blood drive will be held on May 31 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Red & Black Oak Rooms. Following the business meeting, Susan Williams, partner with Faermark & Williams, made a presentation on elder law. John Holmberg from the Advocate Foundation provided a few words and handouts on gift planning through the Foundation. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m. Following the meeting, the group was divided into three groups for tours of the new bed tower and mock-up room led by Jo Amick, Laura Neiberg and Melissa Chumbley. Respectfully Submitted, Dorothy Paige Secretary

“JOURNEY OF EXCELLENCE” As a valued volunteer with Good Samaritan Hospital, I’m sure you’ve seen the amazing transformation happening across our campus, as 3 major construction projects continue to change the way we care for our patients. Striving for continuous improvement, Good Samaritan Hospital has embarked on a $100 million dollar campus expansion project that includes:

New Private Rooms. For the first time, we will be able to provide every patient with a private room—a clear necessity for a hospital committed to excellence. Private patient rooms enhance healing by providing for infection control; privacy and a quiet environment for both the patient and their family and friends.

Cancer Care Center Expansion. Expanding our Cancer Care Center will ensure an exceptional experience for patients at every stage of their fight. The plan includes for expanded treatment options including advanced radiation therapies, outpatient chemotherapy and infusion services—all with the comfort and convenience of one centralized location.

Cardiovascular Diagnostic & Rehabilitation Suite. Completed in August 2015, the consolidation of cardiovascular diagnostics, catheterization, observation, recovery and rehabilitation ensures that patients receive higher quality and faster care through the use of new technology—all with the comfort and convenience in one centralized location. In other words, we will offer our patients one-stop heart care.

In 2014 the “Journey of Excellence” Capital Campaign was launched to raise a minimum of $10 million dollars in support of these projects. Stepping forward to give our campaign a great start, the Auxiliary generously pledged a $2 million dollars gift. Today more than $9 million has been raised and a victorious capital campaign is just around the corner. For us to be successful, however, we need all our friends to make a personal gift. Whatever your circumstance, there are a variety of ways that you can support our campaign, including:

Cash/pledge: A pledge of a cash gift can be spread over five years, giving you the option of selecting installment payment dates that best suit your circumstances.

Bequests: Through your will or living trust, you can designate a certain dollar amount, percentage or residue of your estate.

Beneficiary designation: You can make a gift by designating us as a direct or contingent beneficiary of

your retirement plan, life insurance policy or financial account. Life income gifts: Charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts allow you to make a gift and

provide an income for yourself and/or others. Lead trusts provide income first to the Advocate hospital you choose; after the agreed time the assets return to you or your loved ones

IRA Charitable Rollover: If you are over age 70 ½, you may make a charitable gift by directing a distribution from an IRA (up to $100,000) directly to Advocate Charitable Foundation in support of Good Samaritan Hospital. When you do so, the gift distribution will not count as taxable income.

Regardless of the size of your gift, your gift is important. So if you haven’t already made your gift to the “Journey of Excellence” Capital Campaign, please considering doing so today. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 630-275-1360. Thank you for your consideration, and thank you for being an important member of the Good Samaritan Hospital team. Jo Amick Vice President of Development Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital

Hand Hygiene – Let’s Keep Everyone Safe….

Why is hand hygiene so important? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hand hygiene is the most important measure to prevent the transmission of harmful germs. What is the proper procedure to use when using alcohol-based hand rub? Apply product to palm of one hand. Rub hands together, covering all surfaces of hands and fingers. Continue rubbing hands together until hands are dry. What is the proper procedure to use when washing with soap and water? Wet hands first with warm water. Apply soap, and rub hands together vigorously for at least 20 seconds, covering all surfaces of the hands and fingers. Rinse hands with water and dry thoroughly with a disposable towel. Use towel to turn off the faucet.

ARK Lynn Murphy We make baby caps for our Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital newborn babies. We are in need of ladies who like to sew. We’ll supply everything to make the baby caps.

The group meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 9:00 AM. to 11:00 A.M. usually at the Cancer Care Conference Center. If interested, please leave your information at the volunteer office and I will get back to you. Thank you. Lynn

WAYS AND MEANS Ed Ptacek & Tom Brown There are two sales left for Ways & Means. The next sale is September 22-23 and is the linen sale. There will be a wide assortment of luxurious sheets, pillow cases and blankets. Many different colors will be available. Bamboo pillows will also be featured. The last sale is November 2, 3 & 4. This is the book sale, which includes a wide assortment of unique items. We will be located right outside the cafeteria. Stop by and check us out. Many of the items in each sale would make wonderful gifts for the upcoming holiday season. For the year, we are running slightly behind last year regarding total sales. Therefore, we would greatly appreciate any business.
