THE BIBLE STORY HOUR. by Yvonne Bajko

. - _ ' ^ one week, so a Bible Story Hour was• Started. This was an extension of

the Vacation Bible School, only instead of being held every day, it was held only on Saturday afternoons. It operated the same way the Vacation Bible School did - with a songservice, Bible lesson, arts and crafts, and refreshments. The children, whose enthusiasm was high from VBS, came eagerly. However, there was one problem. Many of the children would not come bythemselves. This meant that workers would have to be sent to get them. With nearly 80 children to be "picked up" many workers were needed.Willing workers are hard to find. It is extremely difficult to findsomeone who is willing to put as much time and effort into this workthat is needed. Some do not understand these "street" children.Others

are ashamed to stop children on the street and invite them to church.Still others are afraid to face their living conditions, and talk tothe parents.

For the little time and the few workers we have, we are making excellent progress. We teach the children many choruses and tell them a-bout God's wonderful love.

The children are also taught honesty and discipline. This job has been the hardest, but we have been successful in thatpart also. Many of the children come by themselves now - not only to the Saturday Story Hour, but Sunday School also. We have about 20 that come regularly, and we hope and pray we will soon have more. This work has only began, but with your prayers, and more workers itwill go farther and farther, and reach many, many more children.

TRIP TO POLAND

Pmxl Bajko, Director

J'JL 18 19&?

July, 1969.

Due to our very extensive ministry in Poland, it is our policy to visitPoland every 3-5 years during the sunmier months. The first visit was made in 1960 and the second in 1963» The next vi

sit was planned for 1968 but my visa was denied by the Polish governe-ment without any explanation, and the trip was postponed till thisyear. Once again I was unable to get the visa. Despite this, I plannedmy trip to other European countries, especially Czechoslovakia, wherewe have thousands of radio listeners and receivers of our literature.

But hope was not given up for receiving a visa to Poland.

May 15th, I departed by the SS France, and Immediately after my landingin Europe, I went to the Polish Embassy. Before going there, I openedthe Bible and my eyes fell on Mark 9:23: "Jesus said unto him: If thoucanst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth". Withoutany hesitation I thanked God for answering my prayers, and one hourafter entering the Polish Embassy I had in my possesion a Polish visa.In the next few hours I was on my way to Poland. Due to my other schedule, I was only able to stay in Poland five days, but what a glorioustime I had!

Saturday, May 24, at 6.14 p.m., I was met at the train in Warsaw by alarge group of preachers and Christian workers. From the station wewent in George's car to his place where dinner was prepared. We had toeat in a hurry because our preachers from all parts of Poland were waiting for a special meeting. The meeting lasted till 3 or 4 o'clock inthe morning.

Page 6: Bajko Paul Adela 1969 Poland ECC

I was able to hear reports of their activities, achievements and victories, also about failures and difficulties* There was an open, sincere exchange of thougths and ideas about work in Poland, and much timewas given for evangelism and ministry among the youth.

All preachers and workers expressed their sincere appreciation for thesupport given by the Department of Missions, for our publications andvital interest in the Polish ministry. From my side I assured the brethren about our stand behind them and further presentation of that workbefore the Brotherhood here. There was mutml understanding and harmonyin all phases of the work in Poland.

May 25th was very busy. I preached for both services in the Church ofChrist, Pulawska Street, which we helped to build two years ago, whereBro. J. Sacewicz and P. Bajenski are ministers and George Bajenski isyouth leader and choir director. The house of the Lord was filled toits capacity at both services. The choir sang beautifully from our songbooks and then, after the evening service, the youth gathered for a special singspiration where they sang many choruses from our chorus book.My eyes were filled with tears listening to those beautiful melodies.

Between the services I had at least 30 personal conferences with preachers and workers. After the evening service George, Kostek and I met in the home of Bro.and sister A, Lewczuk for another conference, which lasted till 4 o'clockin the morning. Here we talked about the ministry among the young people. I was also glad to hear how the Lord is blessing them in the workamong the youth and how helpful are our song books. Life of Christ, vis.

Book of Acts and our Polish

magazine in the work.I thanked

together with them forthese great victories.

Monday, after two hours ofsleep, I went with George, hisfather and Bro* Sacewicz to

home for aged people inOstroda, where we spent seve-

'* ra I hours in fellowship withthe old people and closed thatfellowship with a special service where I preached again.

Then we departed to Kostek's place. On the way we visited a Christianlady, who is dying of cancer, in Olsztyn, where we had short fellowshipand prayer, then we stopped In Sz.to visit one preacher and his family, and by 12.15 midnight we reached Kostek's place, where we ate a late, late dinner and after a couple of hours of fellowship retired to ourbeds.

By 7 a.m. we were once again on our feet because some Christians cameto meet us and have fellowship with us. We also discussed the establishment of a Church in Bielsk-Podl.

I would like to make a note that at the present, Kostek is thefather of a fine boy, who was born a couple of weeks ago.

proud

After breakfast we left Kostek's home on the way to "Warsaw in order tobe at a special service in Warsaw, but we had to stop in Szeszyly,Siel-ce and Siemiatycze, where many people came to meet us. Seeing so manyof them, we had to have short services, where once again I had to preach. Then we hurried to Warsaw where we bad only 45 minutes to refresh ourselves, change, and run to another service and after the service to aspecial banquet. After that more conferences with many workers and individuals and with only a few hours of sleep we were on our way to Cie-szyn, my last stop and service in Poland where I was accompanied byGeorge, Kostek and Lonek. Then I had to leave Poland by midnight May28th, for Czechoslovakia. I will write about the trip to Czechoslova -kia and services there in the September issue of our news letter.

I would like to mention that it was a most exciting and glorious trip!

^̂ which are sung throughout al^of Poland, including Roinan Ca

tholic Churches, what opens the door for our workers to go among thosepeople and preach the Gospel.

I thank God for Bro. Winnik because our radio ministry is reachingthousands of homes in Poland, Czechoslovakia and other countries, andmany people have responded to the Gospel invitation because of thisministry.

I thank God for all American Christians who support the Department ofMissions, and through it, the work in Poland, where our preachers canpreach and receive our publications.

I thank God for George, Kostek and Lonek and Alina Lewczuk, who workamong young people and youth with great dedication and success.George and Kostek were a special blessing to me. With tears in oureyes we talked about their study in U.S., about our work together inpublication and the Slavic Church, also of visits to Churches, camps,American friends and work in Poland.

If George will get his visa to go to Canada in order to get married,we will see him also in the States, but if not, Vera, his fiance, willgo to Poland and they will be married in Poland.Next year our Slavic Church will observe 10 years of existence andbecause Kostek and George were chartered members of our church, weplan to invite both of them to the States for that great occasion.

I thank God for all faithful and loyal ministers in Poland who preachthe Gospel with great dedication.

Now at the end of this letter, I would like to thank all Christiansfor your prayers in my behalf, our work, your special gifts, and yourwonderful support of our ministry. We need you all the t^e.

Yours in His service,

TRIP TO CZECH osfo V A K I A

Our acquaintance with the people in Czechoslovakia began a few yearsago thanks to our Polish broadcast from Monaco. We received hundredsof letters every year with petitions for Christian literature, song-books and Bibles.

Because there was not much hope to receive a visa to Poland, I planned to go to Czechoslovakia this year for 2 weeks. However as I wrotein my previous report, the Lord opened the door to Poland. ThereforeI went to Czechoslovakia directly from Poland.

The impression I got after crossing the boarder from Poland to Czechoslovakia is hard to describe; but it was a favorable impression. Iwent to meet people whom I never met before in my life - people whose names were known to me only from correspondence. At the time I arrived in Czechoslovakia there was an annual conference of the preachers of the Czechoslovakian Church of Brethren. I wasintroduced to all of them and I was given an apportunity to preach atthat conference and have talks and fellowship with them.I found that the Church of the Brethren there is very close to ourRestoration Movement doctrinally, and they were very happy to hear a-bout the Church of Christ - Christian Church movement in America andPoland. As a result of that conference I was invited to many churches across the land to preach.I found in Czechoslovakia, close to the Polish border, many large and

- 1 -

Page 10: Bajko Paul Adela 1969 Poland ECC

small churches. All the church choirs use our songbooks, Sundayschools use our publications such as the Life of Christ and New Testament Heroes, visualized, and the youth use our Polish magazine witharticles and poems. Everywhere I went they prepared special numbersto show how well our material is used.

There were special youth meetings which lasted for hours, at which Ipreached and talked about our Colleges, youth camps and the Restoration Movement. i

I had the opportunity to meet, with many Lutheran pastors and talkwith them about the Lord. All of them admired the structure of theChurch, the Scriptual practice and the simplicity of worship as it ispracticed by the Churches of Christ.

The highlight of my visit was on the last day of my stay in Czechoslovakia. It was on the Lord's Day and I had four services beginningwith Free Pentacostal Church, then going to the Brethren Church, nextto the Free Evangelical Church and finally the Lutheran Church. Eve-rjrwhere crowds were in hundreds but the most impressive service wasin the Lutheran church where hundreds of people came for a special, unscheduled service, arranged by a so called youth "Missionary Group'.'Before I went behind the pulpit I was welcomed by the pastor of theChurch as the friend, then by children with flowers and poems as onewho provided them with spiritual food and by the youth with beautifulroses with appreciation for songbooksj Life of Christ, flanelographs.Bibles, Polish magazine, etc.

- 2 -

Page 11: Bajko Paul Adela 1969 Poland ECC

I was astonished, and with tears in my eyes I thanked God for the fruitsof our work. After I preached for over 1 hour I was greeted by all people and then we went to the Parish fot further fellowship, a questionperiod and singing.

What did I find in Czechoslovakia? - I found that at the present timepeople have freedom to worship and people, redeem the time, I found thatat every service people pray and preachers have to ask people to beshort in prayers because there are hundreds who want to pray. I foundthat there is a shortage of Christian literature and I found how appreciative those people are for what we have done for them.Everywhere people were trying to present to me monetary gifts forliterature we sent for them, which I had to turn down telling them thatit is Lord's work and encouraged them to help those who are in need.I found that people are listening to our broadcasts faithfully and readeverything we send to them. I brought with me hundreds of new adresseswhere we can send spiritual food; I received many requests for more Bibles, songbooks, Bible slides, Bible stories, Christian records, etc.I received urgent request to publish Life of Christ and New TestamentHeroes, visualized,in Czechoslovakian language, what will be done assoon as we will receive the translation from Czechoslovakia.

I received requests to come back as soon as possible but for longer vi-_ . sits because

Page 12: Bajko Paul Adela 1969 Poland ECC

left there part of my heart and now we try to do as much as we can forthe people over there in addition to our ministry in Poland. It was very hard for me to depart without tears.

I thank God for our wonderful country of America where we live so freely and have acces to all of God's blessings, and I thank God for faithful Christians across this great land who, through us, carry the Gospelof Christ to the far countries of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Russia andothers.

I returned to this country with greater zeal and determination to servemy Lord better by fulfilling His Great Commission.

On my way back I was able to meet missionaries from European Evangelistic Society? Bro. Bartchy Scott, Bro. Thurston and I>r. Th. Mosalkow}from the Black Forest Christian Mission: Bro. and Sister Alva Phillipsand co-workers; from the West German Christian Mission: Bro. and SisterEd Fausz and family; from the French Christian Mission: Bro. M. Duhonjfrom European Christian Camp, Bible Christian Call and Appello Cristia-no: Bro. and Sister Guy Mayfield, and had with all of them great fellowship exchanging thoughts about work in Europe,

Since my return, we have sent out hundreds of packages with spiritualfood behind the Iron Curtain and received many letters of appreciationfor my visit and preaching.I consider my trip to Europe this past summer very succesful and beneficial and and thank God for His guidance and blessings.

The publication of the Life of Christ and New Testament Heroes, visualized, in Czechoslovakian language will cost us over $ 1500.00.Those who would like to contribute toward this project, please send youroffering to Department of Missions and it will be appreciated very much.

November, 1969,

It is so good to serve the Lord. Every day I pray that the Lord will use usin His service in the best and most suitable way. We see the need which isgreat. From everywhere we receive hundreds of letters with a cry for help.

We thank God that in the name of the Lord and through prayers and support ofmany Christians across this land, we are able to answer the call.We go in person where we can reach people. At the same time we go into homesof people in Poland, Russia, Czechoslovakia and many other countries throughbroadcasting, Bibles, New Testaments, song books, magazines and other Christian literature which we produce and send. We go by tapes, letters and post^cards. We go by prayers, we go by building houses of worship, supporting many preachers and training young people for the ministry. Our lives are verybusy and we thank God for it.

We thank God for you, dear friends, who pray for us and help us. Most of ournews letters are composed of news from our mission fields, but due to lackof space very seldom do we put letters from this country from people who staybehind us. This time I would like to enclose one out of many and I would like to tell you that such letters inspire us and challenge us for a greaterministry and more sacrifice:"Dear Brother Paul, I cannot begin to tell you how much your visit to Fair-mount, has meant to our people. This Missionary Day was one of the most suc-cesful we have had in a monetary value, and I feel sure it was the most suc-cesful in a spiritual value. We have grown much to complacence in our workhere, but I believe many are beginning to wake up. Mr, Wilson has stirred usto new commitment and you have shown us how badly our help is needed throughout the world. Pray for us, as we strive to do better in the Lord's work andhope we won't back slide " Mrs. G,M,Bagby, Corr, Seer. Miss. Comm.

LET'S THANK GOD FOR THE SOULS

§1# ... ^ "Dear Bro. Bajko. Peace be unto you!T * I• Thank you very much for your wonder-

|M ^ ful letter and exhortation. I wouldI. H| like to inform you that Sept.27, six

mi precious souls were baptized intoChrist. Our choir sang beautifully

I _ and Word of God was preached in po-wer and there were prayers of repen-

-^1 tance and thanks. Next day, the 28thof September we had Thanksgiving Day when we thanked God for spiritual andmaterial blessings. We thanked God that with your help we were able to buildour new chapel with baptistry which is always ready to be used when peoplecome to Christ. For over a year alredy we enjoy this new place and I wouldlike to tell you that in the past year 18 souls were added to the Lord'schurch in Warsaw - 16 by baptism and 2 by statement. I am very happy thatLord is blessing you there and us here. In the last few days I visited manychurches where I preached. Please remember us in your prayers. J.S."

"Beloved Bro. Paul and Sister Dela! We were invited by a Catholic priest forthe 150 aniversary of the Catholic Church in S. After long prayer we decidedto accept the invitation and went there together with another Christian man. There were so many people that all services had to be outside. On the platform I saw 15 bishops and priests. There was a big choir and a band and there before the band and choir I saw your song book "One Song". The band started to play "Yesterday, today, for ever, Jesus is the same". Then our friendpriest introduced us as the members of the Church of Christ who came to singand to talk about the "Old rugged Cross". We sang one song after another andpeople cried. After the official ceremony came to the end, people asked us tostay and to sing more and tell them more. We did and it is hard to describe

the effect this had on the people. Then we were invited to an official dinnerand we were asked to sing again. , iIt lasted for 3 hours. When the l' 'time for departure came, priests - Iand people took us to the bus s- ^ ^tation and handed to us an enve- ^ rr.lope with money. Of course we didnot accept money but asked themto give it to the mission workfor song books and other litera-

that know the

touched the hearts

of many and with tears in eyeswe departed praying that the sown seeds will produce big harvest. Your laboris not in vain. Everything what you do brings fruits. Yours,Aleksy&Alina".

the time that He uses youin such a wonderful way to spread the Gospel everywhere. Please thank thosewho took part in this great deed and helped us to preach Christ. Please remember us in your prayers, Bro. Sacala".

A MESSAGE FROM KOSTEK

"It is a long time since I wrote to you. All our time is occupied by theLord's work and we thank God that we see the fruits of our labor. I am suremany other workers wrote you about our Youth camps this summer. We had a musical part and the most important part - teaching the Scriptures.Half of those who attended were unconverted youth and we thank God that 33souls responded to the Gospel invitation. It was wonderful. Your song book"One Song" is something unusual, wonderful and great. Our youth begs for itand most of them received it. We try to distribute the song books in such away that there will be a few of them in each congregation. Your chorus book"Heavenly Sunshine", although it is older, still has the same popularity andeffect as it did in the first days of its appearance. We use them everywhere.

In the first camp under the leadership of George we had over 100 young people in attendance. The second camp under ray leadership was smaller becauseit was harvest time, but many of those who could not attend during the daytime were coming in the evening, and each evening we had great gatherings.Wehad Bible dramas and other activities but every day always ended with a evangelistic meeting, and after that, because people who came from neighboringvillages did not want to go home, we sang for another hour or two.On the Lord's day, Aug. 17, we had a baptismal service. We all worked hardand the Lord blessed us.

Now we are working on our house of worship in B.P., and we will soon have a

nice place to meet in. We tl^nk God for the help we receive from you, andthanks to this, it is possible for us to do many things for the Lord.I thank God that He called you there that you might be the channel of bles -sing which, through the gra^e of God, flows into our country. May the Lordreward you and bless you in vour work. Your effort is paid a thousand timesby the joy and thanks of those who receive all the spiritual and materialfood you provide constantly^ Yours in God's love. Kostek".

SISTER MJENp|ci DEPARTED TO THE LORD: 1

It was a shock to all of usj Ito receive a telegram from Poland on October 7thinforming that sister Bajenjsjki, the wife of the faithful minister in Polandand mother of George Bajenski, former Polish student of Eastern Christian Co-liege and Lincoln Christian jColiege, now faithfully serving the Lo]^din Polandbut presently visiting Cana<^ and U.S.A., died suddenly. This past sunaner I spent mairjy hours in her home and enjoyed her wonderful hospitality with many others Who came to Warsaw to meet me. She was always patient, calm, understanding, smiling and willing to help any one. Every dayshe helped someone. Her home| was a "guest house". When after a busy day e-verybody would go to rest in bed, she would stay in the kitchen and work.Shealways was in the Lord's hbijse and took an active part in the service of theLord by singing in the choir and participating in other Church activities. She will never be forgotten|by neighbours and friends across Poland. She willalways live on in our hearts and minds and we thank God for her life. Our deepest sympathy goes t6 Bro. Bajenski, to George and the rest of the family who have to carry on tljie task of service to others.
