The 30th Anniversaryof the SLAVIC CHURCH OF CHRIST

in Baltimore, MD

ililiiillMllii!

The Slavic Church of Christ which was started by the Department of Missionsin 1960 will celebrate this year# on May 20th, her Tliirtieth Anniversary!

The history of the Slavic Church is very unique. In 1960, there were no morethan 6 people meeting in a private home at first, and then in rented facilities of a Methodist Church. When in 1961 the small congregation of 12 memberswas incorporated as a Church, it then purchased its own church building.People gave sacrificially toward the payments for the building and, at thesame time, toward the Church program. jThe growth of the Church was slow, but steady. At the present time, the SlavicChurch counts 44 members with an average attendance of 55.

In 1961, the congregation called Bro. Adam Korenczuk as their minister whohas been ministering there till the present time.

In 1970, the congregation became totally self-supporting and started to support 9 different mission programs in Poliand, South America, and the USA. Thegeneral giving grew from $ 800.00 per year in 1960 to $35,000.00 in 1989!

The Slavic Church is unique also because of its unity. The congregation consists of people of different nationalities: Polish, Russian, Ukrainian andAmerican. Its services are in all those languages! Each Lord's Day the Gos-

pel is preached in English, Polish, Russian and/or Ukrainian. Each servicehas at least 4 songs sung in all those different languages! And at the Lord'sTable, the meditation is given in one language while the prayers are in another two languages.

The Slavic Church's choir sings beautifully in all four languages as welland it can be heard on a Church sponsored local radio program each Sunday.

We thank God for such a unique Church, with still the same Old Message, thewonderful Gospel of Jesus Christ, which, although proclaimed in differentlanguages, still is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes! „ , „

Page 8: Bajko Paul Adela 1990 Poland ECC

About 120 persons attended our dedication service and all could not haveseated places. Many people from our town were present there that day. Myprayer is that our chapel may soon be filled with Christians as many as therewere people during that dedication service.

We thank the Lord Jesus for you, Brothef, for helping us purchase that houseof worship. We are glad that Bro. Irek Woloszczyk will be with us this summer. I know his parents very well and ^im also from his childhood years.Once again, thank you very, very much for everything! Words are not enough toexpress my gratitude. Greetings to youu^nd all those working with you!

"Dear Bro. Bajko,

We are very grateful for the opportunit:l.es that the Lord provides for us toserve Him and for making His Church here in Poland grow, especially recently.Through God's Word people come to know the Lord and turn to Him, this for Hisglory and our joy! \Thank God, we have less room in our chapel this year than a year ago! We hadto make a decision to have a double wo^hip service on Sundays because of thelack of space.Our efforts to enlarge our existing facilities will soon come to realization.God willing, we will move on this year with the construction works.The money that we received from you - $ 5,000.00- came at a proper time. Wethank you very much for it! This gift is for us one more evidence that Godhas His faithful servants through whom He builds up His Church.We thank God for your ministry. Its harvest will be saved sinners and growingchildren of God here In Poland. _ Christ-

"Dear Bro. Bajko,

The Holidays are gone. Christmas and itsj charms and worries are behind us now.But how pleasant it was for us to see once again your kindness, care and concern for us here in Poland. We thank you very much for all the wonderfulthings that were sent to us as Christmas gifts. Ham, coffee, shampoo and soapare but material things, and yet they express so well your love and concernfor us here. New church building in Zalesie

W. Rakus and P. Juszczyk. We discussed the progress of the work/ the need formore churches and building programs. We also viewed the new building in Rybnikwhich is very efficient. There is a beautiful bookstore at the church whereeach day dozens of customers come to purchase books/ Bibles, literature, cards,etc.

June 16th, early in the morning, we headed for Biala Podlaska where Bro.Peter Bronowicki, Sr. preaches. On the way there we stopped for three hours atMuratyn and had a short service. There is a small country church in a very remote area and they long for fellowship with other Christians. Bro. Sacala isthe preacher of that church. We reached Biala Podlaska very late.

On Sunday June 17th we had a service at 10 AM. The chapel was filled withpeople. After a quick lunch we drove 50 km (35 miles) to see the new churchbuilding which is being built in Zalesie, where Bro. P. Bronowicki, Jr. is min-istring. The work is progressing rapidly there. They plan to dedicate thatbuilding next year.

For the evening service we went to Siemiatycze where Bro. A. Zegunia isministering. Also that evening we discussed the work in Czama Srednia andthe need for a building there. Bro. E. Hetmaniok is the minister of the churchin Czama Srednia and he also sends Bibles to Russia.

Next day, June 18th, from the early morning, we visited Milejczyce andSielc. In the afternoon, we arrived to Bielsk Podlaski where Bro. Kostek Ja-koniuk is the minister. There we saw great progress in the construction worksof the new church building. Lord willing that sanctuary will be dedicated nextyear at the 70th Anniversary of the Churches of Christ in Poland in the datesof June 29 & 30, 1991.

Page 11: Bajko Paul Adela 1990 Poland ECC

On June 19-22, we had services in Suwalki, Ostroda# Lidzbark- Warminskiand Gdynia where Bros. J. Szymczuk, J. Puszcz and S. Kobus are ministering.In Gdynia, we met together with Irek and Judi Woloszczyk who, after a shorthoneymoon, went also to Poland. (Irek's trip report will be in our next newsletter .)

June 22nd we were in Zlotow - a new place for us. A year ago, we purchased a building there and Bro. Matulewicz, an elder of the church in Kolo-brzeg, moved to lead the work there. He rotiodeled and adapted the buildingfor worship services. That day we had the first service with the sanctuaryfilled with 50 people! From a recent letter I found out that already two soulsrequested baptism.

June 23rd we were in Gryfice where also a former elder of the Kolobrzegchurch is preaching, Bro. H. Zagrodnik. This church exists only two years andit has already two fast growing mission station-'

Baptismal service in Polczyn-Zdroj

Sunday 24th was an exciting day. By 9 Am, imder cloudy skies, havegathered by a huge lake in Polczyn-Zdroj for a baptismal service of ten souls!And by 4 PM the same day we were already in Kolobrzeg for another baptismalservice where five arniig were immersed in a beautiful baptistry. Bro. PeterKarel is leading that fastest growing church in Poland.

June 25th we went to Bialogard to view the situation there and to seethat the work on the new building is progressing. They need $12,000.00 in order to finish the sanctuary and move the services from a small garage type ofsanctuary to the new beautiful building.

June 26th we went back to Ostroda where we held an all day long meetingwith the Executive Conmittee discussing their problems, needs, oi^hasis on

- .3 -

Page 12: Bajko Paul Adela 1990 Poland ECC

evangelism, need for more teaching/ treiining preachers, organizing the SundaySchools, and so on. Also in Ostroda, ' thanks to the IntematicHial Disasterfinergancy Servicses who contributed $ 15,000.00, we were able to purchase15 tons of canned meat and 8 tons of sugar which were distributed among thechurches in Poland.

Summarizing my unscheduled trip, I can say that I am glad I went. Thisfor several reasons;

1. I saw how people cope with the failing econany;

2. I saw how Christians open their homes for visitors and how they save everypenny to serve the best meals for their guests. There is enough of foodin the stores, but things are very expensive. Some items are more expensive than in the USA while an average Polish income is only $80 a month!

3. I saw how Christians share with non Christians. Each church decided to shareat least 1/3 of the food which was bought for $15,000 with the most needypeople. It is a great witness to tte whole coiranunity!

4. I witnessed how churches which are in building programs give sacrificiallyto buy material and how they work diligently themselves to save the laborcost;
