CHARACTERISTICS

1. Tank

The CALEO range of tanks in thismanual extends from 300 to 6000liters.

The tanks are made of 1st qualitycarbon steel (S235JRG2 - E24),without interior coating. The designand fabrication respect the regulationsin force (e.g. the CODAP: Code ofConstruction for PressurizedAppliances) and are validated by ourover 50 years of experience in the fieldof tank manufacture.

The exterior of the tanks is protectedby a single or double layer of anti-corrosion paint.

These tanks can only be used inpressurized closed heating-typecircuits, without renewal of water(limited quantities of refill water). Thecircuits must be conditioned accordingto the regulations andrecommendations in force.

N.B: The operating temperaturemust not be superior to 105°C(peak).

2. Heating - Equipment

possible:

● Electric back-up: stainless steelarmored electric element, withstainless steel pins, fixed to a 1"1/2coupling up to 12 kW or to threadedboss M77 from 15 to 35 kW:

- from 3 to 24 kW: voltage 230/400 V(star coupling),

- for 30 and 35 kW: voltage 400V(triangular coupling).

● Safety and control thermostat, to beused in a remote controlled circuit.

● Regarding the connection and controlof the heating elements (immersionheaters), the details are presentedbelow, on pages 16-17(Annex A2) ofthis document.

3. Thermal insulation:

CALEO range(Hot water for heating)

2 possibilities:

● Performant mineral wool from 32kg/m3 ( =0,032 W/ (m.K)), thickness60 mm, and flexible PVC jacket, firerated M1 (standard version).

● Rock wool 40 kg/ m3, thickness 50mm or 100 mm, fire rated M0, andrigid metal sheet jacket (aluminum3105 or 3005 quality, filmed on oneside)

In standard version, the bottomdished end is insulated, for tanks upto 3 000 liters.

6 NT Installation et Utilisation - CALEO

Recommendations:

● The protective film covering the metal jacket must be removed as soon as possibleonce the equipment is received. In case of long exposure to ultra-violet rays, thisprotective film can become difficult to remove.

● The temperature of use must not exceed 105°C. In all cases, the minimumtemperature of the circulating water must be higher than the dewing point of the airin the premises in which the tank is installed.

Performance of the thermal insulation:

Thermal losses during storage are calculated in relation to a cooling constant (Cr)measured in Watts.hour per liter per Kelvin and per day. According to the dimensionsof our tanks with Naturol 032 (Ø = 0,032 W/(m.K) insulation, coefficient Lambda ofthermal insulation conductivity), the results of the calculation of Cr for thickness60mm (standard version) are presented in the following table:

Tanks 200 300 500 750 1000H 1000B 1500H 1500B

* Cr 0.152 0,125 0,098 0,080 0,074 0,068 0,063 0,060

Tanks 2000H 2000B 2500 3000 4000 5000 6000

* Cr 0,055 0,052 0,050 0,048 0,042 0,040 0,039

* Unit in Wh/day.K.L ( H = High version; B = Low version)

The following is an example illustrating the insulation efficiency of the hot waterstorage tank:

It demonstrates that the annual thermal loss of a 500L tank without insulation isevaluated at 17 930 kWh, being about 900 € per year (for a fuel cost of0,05€ /kWh). Consequently, the investment return for the insulation isonly a few months.

INSTALLATION

During installation, you are reminded torespect and follow the followingrecommendations:

● The tank must be installed vertically(except specific horizontal version).

● On the upper part, provide an airvent and a degasser (on EC).

● On the lower part, connect thedrainage orifice VM to a waste waterdrain.

● Use the orifices reference DN tocreate the hot and cold watercirculation loops.

● Use the two orifices reference TE forimplantation of the thermometer orthermostat, or other means of controland measurement of temperature.

● The tanks must only be used onclosed circuits with water underpressure. It is indispensable to equipthe tank and the system with safetydevices, particularly safety valves, calibrated to the operating pressureof the tank.

● It is equally necessary to provide apressure holding or expansionsystem, to compensate for variationsin water density according totemperature.

● Do not use adjustable safety valves.Use valves of dimensions adapted tothe installed power and/or flow.

● The evacuation of the safety valvemust not be impeded. This impliesthat the drainage tube has acontinuous and adequate slope andis of a diameter appropriate to thesystem.

Connection to a «funnel type»evacuation circuit is strongly advised forvisualizing the operation of the valve.

● Trade practices must be respected, particularly the assembly of thedielectric coupling to the hot waterdeparture between the tank and thesystem, to avoid any « iron-copper »galvanic corrosion.

● Avoid all mechanical shocks to thetank during transport and/or handling, particularly if the ambient temperatureis close to 0 °C.

● The heating elements, designed fortotal immersion, must never operatewithout water, under penalty of theimmediate destruction of the tank.

Electrical connections must be madeaccording the rules, regulations andstandards currently in force at the placeof installation (NF C15-100 etc.).Grounding of the tank is compulsory. The installation must include a cut-offand protection device uphill of the hotwater tank.

If the tank must remain out of use duringthe winter, in a place where there is arisk of freezing, it must imperatively bedrained. Disconnect the electricconnection if the appliance is electricallyequipped. Close the cold water inlet.Place the lever of the safety unit on theposition « VIDANGE » (DRAINAGE)and open a soak-away point for thedrainage..

N.B: Unless otherwise specified, valves must be rated at 7 bar maximum.

Re-tightening of the nuts and bolts of the manhole

Mounting of the inspection manhole covers (plate/companion flange) and theassembly of the bolting is carried out in factory according to an exact procedure.

However, during transport and/or handling, there is a risk of the bolting becomingloose due to the effect of vibration or other causes (e.g. temperature, pressure). Thefollowing safety procedures are therefore recommended:

Ensure that the bolts are tightened to the recommended torque afterinstallation of the material on site as they may become loose during storageand/or transportation.

At the first water filling, ensure there are no leaks,

After one month of use, ensure the torque tightening and absence of leaks.

As an example, here are some recommended torques (µ = 0,2):

Type TH TH400 TH400 TH400 TH500 TH500

Joint (3 mm) m=2,5 ; y=12 m=2,5 ; y=12 m=2,5 ; y=12 m=2,5 ; y=12 m=2,5 ; y=12

WATER TREATMENT

The provision of a water treatmentsystem for the fill-up water for theheating circuit against scaling andcorrosion is necessary in order tocontrol water quality in the circuit.Essential to correct operation, it mustbe defined according to the physical-chemical properties of the water used, and the operating conditions of theinstallation.

It is important to emphasize thenecessity of thoroughly and correctlycleaning the system beforecommissioning, in order to de-scale thepipes, (at hot, with a dispersing agent, followed by rinsing) and to eliminate allconstruction debris (filings, fibers, soldering waste, etc.).

Two groups of parameters arepresented below:

1) Intersyndical agreement of boilermanufacturers (1969)

This document provides the minimumcharacteristics that supply water for anLTHW circuit (hot water at lowtemperature) must present, in respectof the risks of deterioration of boilersby corrosion and/or scaling. The non-respect of these minimum conditionswill result, in case of damage, in theinvalidity of the warranty.

pH>7,2 TH<25ºF >2000 .cm

Si TH>25ºF : water softenertreatment

Si pH<7,2 or 2000 .cm :film-forming treatment.

Comments:

pH>7,2 : this condition is insufficientwith regard to the risk of acid corrosion

of the black steel tube (protection forpH>9,6).

Also, with a TH of 25ºF (250 ppm inCaCO3) there is a strong risk ofimportant scaling of the production unitif fill-ups are frequent.

2) SNEC / CSNHP (1980)

This document envisages not only theLTHW system but also those conveyingHT HW(hot water at high temperature) orsteam, or circuits serving air conditioningequipment (chilled water, dampeningwater).

- If the system is in black steel: pH>9,6.

- Presence of an oxygenic corrosioninhibitor (oxygen reducer) with thefollowing proportions:

Sodium sulphite: 2 to 10 ppm, Hydrazine : 0,2 to 1 ppm (at N2H4), Tannins or lignosulphonates: 0,4 to

20 ppm. Maintaining an alkalimetric title

(TA): from 5 to 30ºF. If the circuit contains elements in

brass: TA from 5 to 10ºF. If the circuit contains elements in

aluminum: TA lowest possible. If a treatment is made based on a

film-forming: maintain the activeagent in excess.

Comments:The presence of sulphites creates therisk, at low temperature, of encouragingthe development of sulphate-reducingbacteria.In the presence of brass there is a riskthat this will degrade and cause theformation of sulphides.Hydrazine (N2H4): This is a toxic productwhich, due to the incurred risks, can onlybe used in an industrial environment.

Remark: oxygen reducers, with theexception of hydrazine and of sulphites, exist on the market.

11 NT Installation et Utilisation - CALEO

In addition, for equipment in cast aluminum, it is necessary to maintain the pH at avalue inferior to 8,5.

In any case, it is strongly recommended to use the water treatment procedureshaving the technical recommendations of CSTbat (Centre Scientifique etTechnique du Bâtiment: Scientific and Technical Centre for Building). MAINTENANCE AND

OPERATION ADVICE

● Do not exceed the operational andmaterial limits mentioned in thechapter « Characteristics »(temperature, pressure, etc.)

● Use the tank exclusively in a hot orcold closed water circuit, underpressure.

● Ensure correct operation of thesafety valve(s) (once a month).

● Check the functioning of thedegasser (once a month).

● Check the water quality (once every3 months).

● Examine and clean the heatingelements as necessary(1 to 2 times a year).

● Ensure the water tightness of theclosed circuit under pressure.

● Monitor the variation in pressureupstream and/or downstream of thetank. Ensure that the pressure isconstant and there is no strongvariation (P < 1,0 bar). Do notexceed the maximum indicatedoperating pressure. Check that youhave followed the hydraulicconnection diagram shown below.

Troubleshooting:

Continuous water running from thesafety device (valve):

- Check the pressure in thesystem. If this is superior to thespecified operating pressure, install a pressure reducer on themain water supply.

- If the pressure is correct, cleanthe safety valve of the safetydevice.

Loss of pressure in the system or atthe tap:

- Important scaling. Drain theappliance, then descale andcheck the safety devices.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

The volume of water in the systemvaries with the temperature. In theabsence of an expansion system, thisphenomenon provokes a rise inpressure until the safety devices areactivated. During cooling, the pressurefalls. This is why it is indispensable toprovide an expansion system.

In general terms, every installationmust have a hydraulic safety systemagainst:

- Overpressure in the distributionsystem.

- Overpressure due to a rise intemperature (expansion duringheating).

- Overpressure due to failure of athermostat or relay contactor.

During filling, it is necessary to ensurethat the air is entirely displaced by thewater. The heating elements, designedfor total immersion, must never operatewithout water, under the penalty ofimmediate destruction.

The eventual electrical connectionsmust be made according to the rules, regulations and norms in vigor at theplace of installation. (i.e. NF C15-100).

On commissioning, check that:

● The drainage tap operates correctly.

● Electrical connections are correctlytightened.

● Connection characteristics are inconformity with those of the mains.

● The water tightness of the hydrauliccircuit is correct. Retightenreasonably if necessary.

The set point values shown on thethermostats are indicative. It may benecessary, if an exact temperature isrequired, to correct the settings untilthe desired temperature is obtained.

When draining the water heater, particularly for regular maintenance, ensure there is sufficient air entry atthe top to avoid implosion of the tankdue to depression.

Limit the top-up of water in thesystem:

By adding water to the boiler, there is arisk of introducing lime and aggressiveoxygen. These elements contribute tothe deterioration by corrosion of thewhole installation: degradation ofpipes, taps, heating body, boilers;production of deposits and blockage ofvalves, blockage of exchangers, ofboilers etc. This deterioration mayoccur rapidly.

In addition, scaling of the boilersconstitutes an insulation which hindersthe transmission of heat. It results inexcessive heating of the materials andexcessive energy consumption, whichcan be considerable, depending on thethickness of the scale build-up.

It is therefore important to locate thecause of water loss and remedy it asquickly as possible.

ANNEX

A1. Technical instructions for

the tightening of the bolts

It is to be noted that the drafting ofthese procedures is based on apublication entitled « Directivesconcerning the safe use ofwaterproof joints – Flanges andSeals » by the European SealingAssociation (ESA).

Reminder of some fundamentalprincipals

The ideal tightening of the« flange/bolting/joint » assembly is theapplication of a correct mountingpressure on the joint, a pressure lowenough to avoid damage to the jointbut sufficiently strong to avoid a leak. Aprecise control of the effort applied tothe arrangement of a particular flangeis of vital importance.

The order in which the bolts orthreaded rods are tightened weighsconsiderably on the repartition of thepressure of the assembly on the joint.Incorrect tightening of the bolts canalter the parallelism of the flange. Ajoint will generally be capable ofcompensating for a feeble deformationof this type, but serious difficulties maybe encountered if the parallelism of theflanges is very much affected.

The nuts must be tightened, whateverthe tool used or by hand, according toa CROSS tightening diagram.

For most of the materials which makeup the flange arrangement (includingthe joints, fixings, nuts, washers), therelaxation stabilizes after a shortperiod. For the materials used for softjoints, one of the principal factors is

generally the phenomenon of distortion- relaxation of the joint. These effectsare accentuated at high temperaturesand have as a clear result a reductionof the compression pressure on thejoint, which increases the possibility ofa leak. Retightening of the assembly tothe nominal torque at least once, 24hafter the initial mounting or beforedelivery, is recommended.

Do not retighten an elastomer jointafter it has been exposed to hightemperatures.

Simplified tightening procedures in3 phases (Minimum)

● Phase 1: First of all place the nuts inposition by hand. This allows you tocheck that the threads are matchingcorrectly. Next, tighten the nutsuniformly by hand according to theCROSS tightening diagram, at leastrespecting the order indicated by thefigures in RED (see diagrams below).

● Phase 2 : With the aid of a ratchetwrench, tighten by hand up to 70% ofthe torque recommended according tothe cross tightening diagram, at leastrespecting the order indicated by thefigures in RED. Check that the flangerests uniformly on the joint [thethicknesses of the joint must be(relatively) homogenous aftercompression].

● Phase 3: Use a torque wrench totighten to the full predefined torquefollowing the cross tightening diagram,at least respecting the order indicatedby the figures in RED.

Page 15: Ballon Caleo IU-0009-EN-201009 - Lacaze Energies€¦ · 5 NT Installation et Utilisation - CALEO CHARACTERISTICS 1. Tank The CALEO range of tanks in this manual extends from 300

15 NT Installation et Utilisation - CALEO

Tightening procedure in 5 phasesrecommended by the ESA

● Phase 1: First of all place the nuts byhand. This allows you to check that thethreads are matching correctly; (if thenuts cannot be placed by hand, thereis probably a defective thread: tryagain and replace the defective parts,if necessary). Then tighten the nutsuniformly by hand according to theCROSS tightening diagram (seebelow).

● Phase 2: Use a torch wrench totighten to 30% of maximumrecommended torque once all roundaccording to the cross tighteningdiagram. Check that the flange restsuniformly on the joint.

● Phase 3: Tighten to 60% maximumrecommended torque once all roundaccording to the CROSS tighteningdiagram.

● Phase 4: Tighten to the full torquerecommended according to theCROSS tightening diagram.

● Phase 5: Finally, pass at full torqueclockwise on the adjacent fixings.

After the five passes of basictightening, it might be useful to repeatphase 5 again until no further rotationof the nut can be observed. The finaltightening must be uniform, each of thebolts taking the same load.
