Two inches of pouring rain didntdeter art enthusiasts attending theopening of Milynda Rogers rst solo

exhibition, Changing Perceptions.Friends and supporters travelledfrom Alpha, Aramac, Muttaburraand Morven to celebrate with

Milynda and her husband Darryl.Unfortunately Milyndas motherwas unable to attend and HazelRogers presented her with a divinebunch of gerberas on her mothersbehalf.

Milyndas long association andconnections with Tambo madethe Grassland Art Gallery theideal venue for her inauguralexhibition; the gallery is built onthe location of the old Rogers Store

which boasted a mural painted byMilynda on the western wall.

Father-in-law, Bill Rogers openedthe exhibition and delighted the

crowd with stories of Milyndasearly days entering the familyand her involvement with RogersGrocery Store, where she hungher work when she was in juniorhigh. Bill and Hazel were amongthe rst to purchase artworks from

Milynda, when they swappeda painting for a formal dress forsenior graduation.

Not being a keen public speakerMilynda wanted to make surethat when she did is was aboutsomething that really matteredto her. She spoke of the source ofher inspiration, her admiration ofFred Hollows and John Flynn andabout kindness, because kindnessis an excuse to believe in ourselves

and the world around us. Thereare two paintings in the exhibitionfrom which the prots will be

donated to two charities, the Fred

    Hollows Foundation and the Royal

    Flying Doctor Service. Tambo

Main Street is being tendered by

a silent auction and the proceeds

from the sale of RFDS over the

    Warrego will be donated directly

to that organisation.Changing Perceptions is an

    exhibition full of colour and

    texture, exploring the persistence

of beauty in nature with local

    scenes and vistas from Aramac,

    Lake Dunn and Tambo. Three

    fantastic sculptures created from

twisted barbed wire and with very

    strong wrist work add another

    dimension to the show.

The exhibition will on displayat the Grassland Art Gallery from

    8.30 4.45pm until April 22.

magazines and are eligible to attendworkshops. MLA has BusinessEdge Workshops scheduled forRoma in April and Barcaldine for14/15 June.

Previous business news articleshave spoken about the rate ofchange around the world. Anotherexample is that Amazon.com, theworld biggest bookshop, sold moreelectronic books in 2010 thanreal books. Perhaps thats why

bookshops around the world aregoing broke.Speaking of change, try this

quiz. What company was startedsix years ago by a 19 year oldwho designed a website to helphim meet more girls? Well, thatcompany is now worth $50 billion, its free services are used by 500million users plus worldwide andit has been used as a tool to toppletwo governments just this year,Tunisia and Egypt. The answer?Facebook. Many will shake theirhead at this in disbelief.

Are big changes possible forBlackall and Tambo? Well, thatsperhaps what the people in theWestern Downs Regional Councilarea, including Dalby, Chinchilland Miles, thought. It seems they

are sitting on a lot of coal and coal-seam methane. Current projectson the table add up to $140billion. Miles, which now has 680houses, has just had an extra 800new housing blocks approved bythe Council. Thats a doubling of

the town by the stroke of a pen. What change may come for

Blackall and Tambo? Its hard tosay. Over in Egypt many peoplelive on $2 a day and a key reasonfor the forced change of governmentis that people want the freedomto earn more money. Who couldblame them? Whats that to dowith us? Well Egypt now buysa fair bit of lamb and beef fromAustralia. If their income goes up,

they may well want to buy more. Can the Blackall and Tamboregions produce more animals?

Some may say the R&D currentlydone isnt relevant for us. Well, the farmers in Birchip, a grainsregion in Western Victoria, thoughtmuch the same. So, they startedtheir own R&D group, the BirchipCropping Group, see www.bcg.org.au. This group now employs20 people doing local eld trials

etc. Could we start a BT GrazingGroup to do applied research onthe grazing issues in our region? The Council is looking at gettingsomeone out to talk about theidea. Interested? Contact theEDO John Hine on [email protected].

Deep landholder distrust of thestate governments motivationfor its proposed Wild Riversdeclaration of the Cooper Creekbasin was evident at a meeting inBlackall last Wednesday.

Thirty people packed the venueat the Blackall Club despite claimsof poor notice of the meeting.

The presentation by Cairns-based Wild Rivers coordinatorsRoss Brown and Don Wottonbrought an antagonisticresponse when graziers foundthemselves described as otherstakeholders.

The message from Ross Brownto embrace the process, be

constructive and proactivewas drowned in a chorus ofdiscontent.

A perceived sidelining of grazinginterests were expressed alongwith questions about the integrityof the governments scientic

data and mapping, based onpast experience with vegetationmanagement guidelines, scepticism that declarationswould prevent mining activities, and fear of ways legislation maybe changed in the future.

Even a simple question on wherea High Preservation Area (HPA),which will have management codesassociated with it, was measuredfrom, brought a conicting

    response.While Mr Brown responded

that it was measured from theouter bank of the main channel, landholder advocate ChristineCampbell said she understood it

was measured from the bank ofthe outer channel, and thereforeHPAs could be kilometres wide.

Sonja Doyle expressed theviews of many when she askedhow Blackall region creekssuch as Ravensbourne andWooroolah could be identied

as major tributaries in the WildRivers nomination, when nomeasurements of the water ows

in either of these creeks wereavailable.

    Mr Brown contested the

suggestion that there was noscientic data, but Ms Campbell

said it was all premised on a lackof real data and statistics.

Dont you see the frustration withthese motherhood statements, she said. People are asking, whydo secondary streams have a 300metre buffer, why does mininghave a 100 metre buffer?

A question was raised on thepossibility of putting in more

instream weirs for water supplies, using an example of increaseddependency on groundwaterif artesian supplies werecontaminated.

Mr Browns statement that theonly new instream weirs thatwould be possible would be fortown water supplies was greetedwith surprise by Blackall-Tambomayor Jan Ross, who said sheunderstood it was only existingweirs that could be extended.

And that will help a lot of cows,Robyn Adams added.

Meeting attendees said theyfound it hard to believe thatWild Rivers legislation would notbecome more restrictive in comingyears, citing changes to vegetationmanagement laws in other states.

When you look at it again in afew years, theres no guaranteethat you wont alter stocking ratesor make us fence our country off,

Bevan Hauff suggested. All I can say today is that there is

no intention to change anything,Mr Brown responded.

Ms Campbell added that therewas no provision in the proposedlegislation for the public to haveany input to future reviews, and

that any changes were at the

    discretion of the minister.

Ms Adams asked if Wild Rivers

    legislation was overrriden when

    mining companies receive a rating

    of state signicance from thegovernment.

    It (proposed mining activity)

    would denitely come to DERM

    (Department of Environment

    and Resource Management) for

    advisory comment, Mr Brown

    responded. We would note

that it would have Wild Rivers

    signicance.

In the end, will it stop mining

occurring? I dont know. Miningcompanies have lots of money,

    they go hammer and tongs.

    Mr Brown urged people to

look up the Wild Rivers code of

    development activities on the

    DERM website and think about

how they would like to see them

    applied in the Cooper basin.

    We can help you formulate

your objection so that its relevant

to what you want to achieve, hesaid.

    We are seeking your contribution

    to make it work.

    Ms Campbell said an AgForce

panel she was working with had

    already managed to get some

changes, and she felt it was

    denitely worthwhile putting in a

    submission.

    The closing date for submissions

is April 29.The department is planning for

    another round of consultation

meetings in the region prior to the

    closing date.

    Wild Rivers coordinators in

western Queensland last weekfor the round of consultationmeetings say they are happy tomeet with groups of landownerson their properties.

Don Wotton said that while theremay be time constraints, they areprepared to consider requests.

One such visit was made toCoolatai station south of Blackallat the end of February.

    Ravensbourne Creek, one of the

tributaries listed in the CooperCreek nomination made inDecember last year, runs throughthe property.

Alan MacDonald said themeeting had been offered to himwhen he was talking with a DERMofcer recently.

I thought it was a good chance

to actually have these people sit

on the bank of the creek underquestion, he said.

At that stage there was no noticeabout the meeting in Blackall.

Mr MacDonald said a fewmatters had been claried by

the gathering, which was alsoattended by people from ve other

properties nearby. On the whole, people went

away feeling a bit better, so it wasproductive that way, he said,

while still expressing scepticismabout the value of the legislation.

I heard the minister saying lastweek that Wild Rivers will stopmining in the Cooper basin.

Its going to do nothing of thesort, only in a High PreservationArea.

If a mine is located 501 metres

off a creek, Wild Rivers wont stop

anything as far as I can see.

    He was also unconvinced by

    Sustainability Minister Kate

    Jones comment that no onerous

    rules would be imposed on

    landholders through Wild Rivers

    legislation without going through

    parliament.

    Given the lopsided nature of

    the Queensland parliament, it

would be no trouble to push any

    changes through.

Fuel theft inTambo district a reminder about security

    Wet weekendacross the district

It was a wet weekend for the Blackall Tambo district,

with 37mm of rain in Blackall over the weekend

forcing the cancellation of the Blackall races.

Tambo received the brunt of the rainfall with 153mm

falling in town, with rainfall varying on surrounding

    properties.

Marilyn Clift from Isoroy said they received 154mm

with rain continuing steadily over the weekend with

    several heavy falls.

Like many people, wed just done some grading for

rebreaks and the rain caused a bit of havoc, washing

    them away, Marilyn said.

We cant even get out at the moment.

Neighbouring property Uanda received a much lower

rainfall with 90mm, but owner Jack Russell said he

    was happy with that amount.

That was an ideal amount- it didnt cause any

    damage. Jack said.

At Jynoomah, Peter Nevell said they received 117mm

with rain continuing throughout the weekend.

It was pretty steady apart from the rst two inches, which fell on Friday morning, Peter said.

Manning was by far the wettest property in the

district with a fall of 250mm.
