Frome has had a thriving

market since the time of The Domesday Book, and today regular markets still take place, with general markets every Wednesday and Saturday. Check out Frome Country Market for local produce, plants, crafts and art every Thursday in the Cheese and Grain. The Frome Collectors and Flea Market is every Wednesday, where you can hunt for quality second-hand goods, antiques and collectables.

Wander through Frome’s Artisan Quarter - the narrow cobbled streets of Catherine Hill, Palmer Street, Paul Street, Stony Street and the lower part of Catherine Street. Here you’ll find classic gifts, stylish clothes and accessories, ceramics, haberdashery, vintage clothes, and great cafés and restaurants.

Cheap Street, off Market Place, is one of Frome’s prettiest, with a leat running down the middle that carries water from the stream beneath St John’s Church.

Come and explore this charming town!

The George Inn at Norton St Philip was built in the 14th or 15th century and claims to be Britain’s oldest tavern, although it has rivals. Originally built as a wool store for the Carthusian Hinton Priory at nearby Hinton

Charterhouse, it’s thought to have got a licence to sell alcohol from 1397. The timber-framed upper floors were added in the 15th century.

Popular today, it serves a good range of beers and excellent food.

The priory at Hinton Charterhouse was one of originally twelve Carthusian

priories in England. Carthusian monks led a life of contemplation with the emphasis on solitude and silence.

The priory was closed on 31 March 1539, part of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries.

Midford once had two railway lines running through it, the famous Somerset & Dorset between Bath and

Bournemouth and a branch line from Limpley Stoke to Camerton, both now long closed.

The 1953 Ealing Comedy film, The Titfield Thunderbolt, opens with an express speeding

over the viaduct on the Somerset & Dorset while the branch line train chuffs away underneath.
