Bedfont & Feltham v Sandhurst Town The Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Football League, Division One Saturday 21st September 2019. Kick-Off: 3.00pm
Volume 7, Issue 5
Good afternoon everyone.
Welcome to The Orchard for our fifth home match of season 2019-20. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Sandhurst Town Football Club; and our three match officials for this Division One fixture. We trust you enjoy your brief stay with us and have a safe journey home afterwards.
Our visitors, known as The Fizzers, have had a couple of weeks off from playing. Their last match was on Saturday 7th September when they beat our neighbours FC Deportivo Galicia 4-1 at home. Last weekend saw them have a team bowling session and ‘a few beers’. Despite the lack of recent action, they have played seven league matches and have won 5, drawn 1 and lost 1.
Our last home match was on 31st August when we beat Lutterworth Athletic 5-0 in the Buildbase FA Vase First Round Qualifying. Michael Capon scored 4 that day and Jae Kelly the other. That saw us through to play Bedford FC in the Second Round Qualifying last Saturday. Jae Kelly opened up the scoring in a lacklustre first half whilst Michael Capon bagged another hat-trick in the second, making us clear 4-0 winners. We will be hosting Colliers Wood United (CCFL Premier Division) in the First Round Proper on Saturday 12th October.
Continuing with our recent form, we visited Fleet Spurs on 7th September in the league and won 2-1 with Michael Capon and Jae Kelly scoring late in the match to clinch the three points. Also, on the cup front, we lost 0-4 to Southall in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup back on the 10th September. We were due to play Molesey in the Southern Combination Challenge Cup on Tuesday evening, but their FA Vase match against Greenwich Borough had to be re-played due to last Saturday’s match being abandoned due to injury to Greenwich’s goalkeeper.
We’re on the road next Wednesday to Tooting Bec in the Premier Challenge Cup, then away to Ash United next Saturday. We’ll be at home to Epsom & Ewell on Tuesday 1st October in the Division One Challenge Cup. An updated fixture list can be found on the middle pages of this programme.
A full catalogue of last season’s programmes is on our website, and this season’s are being added as we go - https://www.bedfontandfelthamfc.co.uk/content.php?pg=downloads&pd=1047 Enjoy today’s match and see you again soon. Rob – Editor.

Manager’s Notes Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with Sandhurst enjoy their short stay with us. It has been a while since my last set of notes but in that time we have had 2 Vase wins; a good 3 points at Fleet Spurs and a Middlesex Charity cup defeat to Southall. We have matched the club record to reach the first round proper for the 2nd year running in the FA Vase. Along the way, we’ve scored 9 goals and kept 2 clean sheets. A good away day at Bedford last weekend now sees us drawn at home to Combined Counties Premier side Colliers Wood. We will look to try and reach the second round for the first time in the club’s history on 12th October. Back to the league campaign today against a Sandhurst team that have started the season well. Last time out at Fleet, we were nowhere near our best on a tough pitch but still managed to claim the 3 points. Despite losing Rambo to injury early on and down to 10 after our first ‘sin bin’, the lads just kept going and sheer work rate will get you a lot at this level. We hope for a better performance today but as always we expect this squad to work hard and work smart. I hope you enjoy the game, thank you for your support. Adam.
Introducing Our Visitors – Sandhurst Town Sandhurst Football Club was formed in 1910 and played in the Reading & District League until 1979 apart from a short spell in the East Berkshire Football League. In 1979, the Club was elected into the Aldershot & District Football League.1984 saw the Club finish as runners-up from whence they became founder members of the Chiltonian Football League and a stepping-stone toward becoming a senior club. The best season in the Chiltonian Football League was in 1986-1987 when they finished in second place. In 1990 the Club applied for membership of the Combined Counties Football League and were granted senior status by the Berks & Bucks County Football Association. The first two seasons were disastrous finishing in bottom place on each occasion and only escaped relegation back to the Chiltonian Football League at the end of the second season due to the resignation of another member club. However, the form of the Club improved dramatically thereafter over a number of years with managers Peter Browning and subsequently John Underwood bringing the club cup and league success. The first ground used by the Club was a field adjacent to the Bull & Butcher public house that may well have been used as the club headquarters. After a few years, a move was made to the Memorial Park where the Club remained until the 1996 close season, apart from a couple of seasons during the 1950’s spent on a nearby pitch in St. John’s Road. The introduction of the National Lottery prompted an immediate bid for funding for a new ground in Bottom Meadow adjacent to the Memorial Park. With support and backing through additional matched funding from Bracknell Forest Borough Council and Sandhurst Town Council, the Club were successful in the first round of allocations by the National Lotteries Charities Board. The new facilities opened in August 1997 at a cost of £265,000. The club celebrated its Centenary season in 2010/11 winning the Combined Counties League Cup final and getting through to two other semi-finals. The club today has a strong stable, business, financial and community focus today with our 1st team playing in Division 1 of the Combined Counties League. With Michael Herbert and Darryl Jelly starting their second season in charge they have taken the opportunity to strengthen their management team with Ryan Weeks joining as goal keeper coach and Jack Dumbleton as coach/ analyst. By David Richardson IT’S quite telling that Danny Cowley mentioned his and brother Nicky’s Non-League roots in the opening press conference as Huddersfield Town manager. From the Essex Senior League to the Championship in a little over a decade is some rise – and they will never forget where they came from.
The Cowley brothers have now been at every level of English football from tier two down to Non-League’s Step 5. They even picked up back-to-back Manager of the Year honours at our annual National Game Awards!
Their recent success at Lincoln City, who they took to the National League title and then League Two winners, has seen them linked to a number of jobs higher up the ladder. For Imps fans, news of their departure would have been something they’d have known was eventually coming but would have done little to dampen the pain of seeing them leave Sincil Bank for pastures new last Monday.
Of course, it all began at Concord Rangers with Danny as joint-manager to Danny Scopes – the man back in the Beachboys’ hot-seat this season – and Nicky as a player. Since then they’ve gone on to form a formidable partnership, taking Concord to National League South football before a third-place finish with Braintree Town in Non-League’s top tier and a subsequent move into the full-time management with Lincoln.
Concord chairman Ant Smith told The NLP what stood them apart all those years ago and how a relentless quest to be as good as they possibly can has been the cornerstone of their success, which is why he thinks they’ll go right to the very top. “Danny would only ask for that extra one per cent to make things better for the players or the club,” said Smith. “He wasn’t asking for thousands of pounds, just little bits and pieces that would make a big difference.
“On a Thursday night after training we’d have ‘Pizza Night’. I’d order them in, a few of the committee would go down there and we’d have a laugh and it just helped that comradery and the bonding between us all. Little things like that. “Their desire to win games and their attention to detail was just incredible. For anybody in Non-League to watch what they’ve done gives everyone hope. I truly believe they will manage England one day.”
It would be a remarkable story should they go on to lead the Three Lions but for now we wish them all the best in their new challenge and know they continue to be great ambassadors for Non-League football.
Like Chris Wilder in the Premier League at Sheffield United, it is a boost to Non-League gaffers with big aspirations to see these examples. It shows there are sharp managerial minds outside of the Football League. Let’s hope more get a shot because of them.
Our History Bedfont & Feltham Football club was formed in May 2012 following the amalgamation of Bedfont Football & Social Club with Feltham FC, taking the place of Feltham in the step 6 Combined Counties Division 1. The changes bought some decent results; two 5th place finishes in their first two seasons.
The 2015/16 season saw a runners-up spot, 3 points behind CB Hounslow United and this was good enough for promotion to the Premier Division.
The club only lasted at the higher level for one season, finishing second-bottom and some 13 points adrift of safety. Season 2017-18 saw the club finish in 17th place. In the summer of 2018, Adam Bessent joined from Staines Lammas and their loss was Bedfont & Feltham's gain.
Season 2018-19 started very well for Bedfont & Feltham seeing them unbeaten at the top of the league. Getting off to a cracking start helped: an 11-0 win over Bagshot earned the TalkSPORT 2 'Non-League Team of the Week' award.
The club held their heads high and were one of the forerunners throughout the season; suffering their first league defeat in November. Further losses in January and February saw the crown slip slightly, leading to an eventual fifth-place finish. In the FA Cup, 2015-16 saw the club's best FA Cup run as they beat London Tigers and AFC Hayes (both after replays). A tough test against AFC Rushden & Diamonds awaited them in the 1st Qualifying Round where the run ended, despite a credible performance in the 2-1 defeat. The FA Vase has proved trickier, the best run being the 1st Round in 2013 where they lost 1-0 at Welwyn Garden City. Local cup wins include the CCL Division 1 Challenge Cup, lifted in 2015 as they beat Worcester Park 4-3 on penalties in the final as well as the Middlesex Premier Cup a year earlier.
Adam Bessent has brought in Emil Kot as Head Coach, alongside Mark Goff as Coach, and the club is continuing its foray into youth football, with teams from Under 8s to Under 16s.
The club has retained the FA Charter Standard and looks forward to season 2019-20 with great enthusiasm.

Game of the People
Why we grudgingly tolerate international breaks.
NO MATTER how well Gareth Southgate’s team performs and how much good progress was made in the 2018 World Cup, many football fans still find international break weekends tedious and an unwelcome distraction.
Southgate and his immediate predecessors got what England managers, going way back as far as Sir Alf Ramsey and Don Revie, wanted – a decent preparation period for important international matches. I would wager that club managers don’t warm to the international break for it disturbs momentum and, quite often, players come back injured or jaded after a long journey.
The media must also find it a chore. Regardless of how much they talk-up internationals, lower division games and women’s football, the absence of top-level football is like a blank weekend for many people.
Way back in time, the debate of “club v country” was really built around player availability and the vain hope that clubs would prioritise the development of the national team. The idea of a break in domestic football was one of the many subjects that came to the fore when England failed to qualify for the World Cup in 1974 and 1978. There has always been a desire to create an “England FC” as managers try to replicate the spirit of a club rather than a disparate group of players who get together every few months.
Today, supporters are embroiled in “club v country” as the passion that was once there for England among fans was a lot higher than it is today. Thirty years ago, a West Ham fan might say he also supported England, but today, it is all about the club. This is arguably a by-product of the Premier League era, the emphasis on supporter engagement, of myopic backing of “the club”. It doesn’t help that England’s fortunes have declined substantially in the past 15 years, although it may be that the tide has turned.
How much of the decline of international support is to do with the multi-national
structure of top football is open to debate. While some may consider the all-star Premier League teams makes for exciting, cosmopolitan football, it also means that young talent is often stymied and national teams are less enticing than clubs that bring together expensive stars from all over the world.
Moreover, major qualifying competitions are hardly really appealing box-office fixtures, although you do get the occasional gem like Germany versus Netherlands. England v Kosovo will be a huge game for the latter, but for English fans, it is not Liverpool v Everton, or even Bournemouth v Burnley. The really interesting and compelling internationals only come in the competition proper and the larger these tournaments get, the more sub-standard games there will eventually be.
It doesn’t help that watching often pedestrian international football is very different from committed club football. Wembley, despite its expensive rebuild, still struggles to build an atmosphere – hence all the dreadful trimmings such as blasted music and pyrotechnics.
Football has become very club-centric because that’s where the money flows and because clubs work very hard on building global franchises. International events such as the World Cup and European Championship appear to be less about the football and more about the commercial “event” and the culture of “being there”. Thankfully, the 2018 World Cup restored some faith in an elite competition, despite all the misgivings about the hosts.
On the subject of 2018, England’s performance did a lot to build goodwill for the national team after a long period of apathy. But that goodwill could easily be lost if 2020 is a damp squib. We all know that giving England the chance to prepare properly is not an unreasonable request, but we still find the international break, especially in early season, a break in routine that we don’t really want. We have to grin and bear it and believe that it is all for the greater good.
