We have a lot to look forward to this month! The Children will lead us in

worship on All Saint’s Sunday, November 3. The UMW will have their Vendor

Blender and soup sale on November 9. We will have a special guest preacher on

November 10. We will have a special Thanksgiv-

ing potluck dinner on November 24 at 6:00

pm, followed by a Thanksgiving Worship Service

at 7:00 pm. The BUMMs will begin selling

Christmas Trees, and on the last Saturday of the

month we will have the Greening of the Church

to decorate for Advent.

I told my family that I plan to have my

Christmas shopping completed by December 1.

As we begin preparing to celebrate Christmas,

there is a question I would like us all to consid-

er. What are we going to give Jesus for Christ-

mas this year? It is His birthday, after all. I would

love to hear your ideas. If you are willing, please

send me an anonymous note telling me what

you plan to give Jesus for Christmas, and I will

include all your ideas in next month’s newsletter. Don’t worry, I will list what we

are giving Jesus, not who is giving to Jesus.

So I am sure some of you have noticed the flags and materials on top of the church

building....YES! They are replacing the flat roof! It will be replaced with a new, slightly

sloped one to help better direct the rain and snowfall to the drains that we currently

have. This should help with our leakage issues, so that they are history! We will con-

tinue to do the very best that we can to be good stewards of the tithes and offerings

you all contribute. Additional fundraisers will help to provide the funding we need for

day to day expenditures. They will also help offset the cost of the additional funds

needed to pay our mortgage down, and cover costs for the new roof! Please consider

joining our fundraising team, and feel free to share your fund-

raising ideas with me. Together we can all do so much to keep

God's “House on the Corner” going strong!

The Bethel Book Club met at Wegman’s on October 15th, with several ladies missing

due to illness and travel. Those that attended enjoyed a short and sweet discussion of

our book "Blue Wide Sky". We will be reading the book "The Dressmaker's Gift" by

Fiona Valpy for our November 19th meeting, also at Wegman’s. Come join us.

FaithWeaver Friends is Back!

The FaithWeaver Friends program is active at Bethel! The next session will be November

3. FaithWeaver Friends is open to all children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

FaithWeaver Friends is an exciting program very similar to Vacation Bible School. Each

session your child will sing upbeat songs, play cooperative games, create special projects

and explore Bible stories in wild and wacky ways. Our Fruit of the Spirit for the upcom-

ing session is Self-Control and the children will earn “keys” when they demonstrate self-

control. Each session they will be given a “Daily Challenge” to demonstrate what they

have learned. Kids will also get a chance to earn an additional “key” for a service

opportunity. We invite you to see our closing celebration at 5:50 pm and join us for a

family dinner at 6:00 pm.

Discipleship Ministry Jesus’ words in Matthew provide the Church with our mission: “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20), and “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. . . . You must love your neighbor as you love yourself” (Matt. 22:37, 39). Discipleship is about loving God. It is more than an acknowledgement of God’s existence, or a statement of belief regarding God. It is total devotion and desire to know God, to be one with God, and to worship God. When Jesus was asked what was the most important commandment, his response was: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first command-ment” (Matt. 22:37-38 NIV. See also Matt. 22:34-40; Mark 12:28-34; and Luke 10:25-28.). The Discipleship Ministry is beginning a series on” How to Love God” as we move people of faith into discipleship.

How to Love God By: Ella Hearrean God asks us to love him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. How do we do that? Unless it’s mad, passionate, extraordinary love, it’s a waste of your time. There are too many mediocre things in life. Love shouldn’t be one of them. Most people hope for an extraordinary love. They want a head-over-heels, once-in-a-lifetime relationship that is both passionate and enduring. Hit movies, best-selling novels, and dating websites all bank on our hope for a great romance. However, the greatest love wasn’t born in a movie or a classic novel; it was authored by God himself when he created you in his image. His singular desire has always been a passionate, enduring relationship with you. Like us, God wants nothing less than the greatest love story.

Love with Passion and Purpose God has a single expectation for a relationship with you. He spells out his desire in the Bible: “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” He makes it very clear that he wants “all” of you. He wants all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength invested in your relationship with him. More than anything, he craves a relationship in which you are “all in.” Anyone who has been all in knows that loving passionately is about loving purposefully. The two elements feed each other: Your passion drives your purpose. Your purpose feeds your passion. An “all in” kind of love is the sum of the little choices we make each day. Gary Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages, said, “Our most basic emotional need is not to fall in love. It’s to be genuinely loved by another, to know a love that grows out of reason and choice, not instinct.” I need to be loved by someone who chooses to love me, who sees in me something worth. What are the daily choices you can make to love God passionately? Thankfully, because you’re a reflection of him, you can begin by simply ask-ing yourself, how do I hope to be loved? You already have what it takes to create an extraordinary relationship with God.

Let’s look at each of the ways God wants your love.

Love with All Your Heart Loving God with all your heart means reserving the best of your affection for him. Make time each day to build an intimate relationship with him through prayer—through conversation. He wants to know you and be known by you. • Start by sharing joys with him. Run to him first with your big news at work. Sing to him at the top of

your lungs on a great day. Fill him in on your private hopes. Tell him how much you appreciate him. Boost him up to others.

• But also talk to him first when you’re feeling down. Cry to him when you’re overwhelmed at home. Admit when you feel jealous. Be honest when you’re disappointed or angry—even if it’s him you’re angry with. Share your secret fears. Apologize when you’ve made a mistake. Ask him for forgiveness.

• Then let him talk. He has things to say, and he wants a relationship that goes both ways. Ask for his advice and seek out his answer. Listen to his stories in the Bible. Hear out people who speak his truth. Notice the gifts he has provided for you.

• Each day, set aside time to get to know God.

Love with All Your Soul Loving God with all your soul means dedicating your life to him. Begin by asking him, “How do you want me to spend my time, energy, money, and talents? What can I do with my resources to honor you?” Find out what God values and stay true to those things. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” When you invite God into all areas of your life, he will show you how to live in a way that pleases him. He may ask you to shift your spending habits from self-indulgence to those less fortunate. He might en-courage you to change your attitude toward work. He’ll probably ask you to find friends who support your relationship with him. He’ll definitely urge you to forgive and love people the way he forgives and loves you. In every area of your life, look for ways to show your commitment to him.

Love with All Your Mind Loving God with all your mind means backing up your passion with knowledge. Benjamin Franklin has been credited with saying, “If passion drives you, let reason hold the reins.” God understands that the mind and heart are linked. He wants you to use your reasoning to understand and love him more fully. Begin by asking questions.

Discipleship Ministry cont. Don’t be afraid to challenge him and wrestle with his commands and your beliefs. When I’ve asked tough questions, I’ve found that God welcomes genuine curiosity and dialogue. In fact, he hopes for it. Then, seek his answers. Read the Bible and find out what the words mean. Listen to the experiences of others. Take a class. Ask him for guidance. Make an effort to find out who he is. Discover what he likes and what he dislikes. Loving God with all your mind also means directing your thoughts to valuable things. When you focus on hope and love instead of fear and hate, your heart and actions follow. Philippians 4:8 says, “Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Each day wonder about God.

Love with All Your Strength Loving God with all your strength means persevering for him each day. To what lengths will you go for the one you love? Poet Bayard Taylor once said, “The loving are the daring.” Indeed, genuine love demands strength and courage like nothing else. It means you must muster your resources to protect your relationship with God every single day. It means you’re willing to change and sacrifice things to have him. It means being honest, and sometimes it means doing the unpopular thing. It means listening to truth and holding yourself accountable. Loving God strongly is walking away from gossip when you prefer to be part of the group. It’s admitting you’re wrong and making a change. It’s asking people to help you protect your relationship with God when you don’t feel like it. It’s avoiding the people and things that could take your attention and love away from him. It’s getting up and trying again after you’ve failed. Each day be willing to fight for your relationship with God.

Love in the Moments Every day is made up of hundreds of little moments that are opportunities to love God. And every single opportunity matter. When loving moments are strung together, they form days. When loving days are strung together, they become months. When loving months are strung together, they stretch into years. And over time, years of love for God make up one extraordinary love story. To “Love God, Love One Another, Love Our Neighbors” is our mission here at Bethel.

Blessings Everyone,

The deposits and head count for the youth mission trip to Mingo County, West Virginia have been submitted! We have a count of 7 youth and 4 chaperones going on the trip! We are extremely excited! The “Bethel Bricks” have been a huge hit, and are helping greatly to increase our budget for the mission trip. The mission trip to West Virginia is a lower cost choice, but it still costs $339 per person. If you need further information, or an order form for the “Bethel Bricks”, they are available in the Narthex.

As you can see from our “group happenings”, much of our time will be helping with FaithWeaver Friends. It is wonderful to see the youth help the kids grow in their walk with Jesus like they did them-selves, when they attended FaithWeaver Friends.

Youth Group Happenings

I started a Minecraft Server so that our youth and

youth-at-heart (like me) can play in a private multi-

player Minecraft world. Since I am the administrator,

I am setting the following general rules;

First: Do no harm and avoid evil of every kind, espe-

cially that which is most generally practiced, such as

any profane language, (particularly taking the Lord

God’s name in vain).

Secondly: Do good and be kind, and as you are able

do good of every possible sort to all players.

Bethel is on A Mission.... Thank you one and ALL that participated in any way to Rise Against Hunger! What a blessing to be able to help so many people with meals for their families. As of October 5, we have provided God's love by paying for, and packaging, over 101,000 meals. We were also able to provide 12 water filtration systems!

Here are some of the MANY opportunities to be the hands and feet of Christ to others in the upcoming months: • Nov. 3 - FaithWeaver Friends is looking for help preparing & serving dinner

for the participants, their families, and the volunteers. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. If you'd like to help, please see Tonia Parker, our fearless FaithWeaver Friends Coordinator. You can email her at [email protected]. It's a good opportunity to enjoy some fellowship with our youth as well.

• Nov 9 - the UMW will be hosting a Vendor Blender from 9-2 in the church Fellowship Hall. You can support their efforts by donating ingredients for the soup (see sign up sheet in nar-thex), by serving food in the kitchen, donating baked goods, or by attending and purchasing some of their YUMMY homemade vegetable beef soup, chicken BBQ sandwiches, or baked goods!

• Nov 10 - The Mission Team will be providing dinner for the FaithWeaver friends participants, their families, and volunteers. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. Hope you can help support our youth program that evening, and join in fellowship. Let me know, if you are able to help out.

• Nov. 15 - Food donated for the NCA Emmaus Ultreya Dinner that is being held at Bethel at 6:30 p.m. (with service to follow at 7:30).

• Nov. 24 - Donate food and/or attend the Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner at 6 pm. Judy LaPorte and the Hospitality Team are coordinating. Pastor Joe has planned a special Thanksgiving Service to follow at 7:00.

• Nov. 28 - We need volunteers to deliver hot meals from Old Bridge UMC to shut ins, those alone and in need on Thanksgiving Day. Please see the sign up sheet in the narthex, if you would like to volunteer for this special outreach to our local community members.

• Nov. 30 - Come on out and help with the “Greening of the Church” in preparation for Ad-vent (which begins December 1st). LOTS of help will be needed to get the church ready for such a special time of year! Time to be announced.

Our annual “Untrim a Tree” tags will be coming about mid November. We are blessed to have Susan Turner coordinating this outreach project for us again this year. Be on the watch for her upcoming "colorful" announcements on Sunday mornings. We will be collecting gifts for 100 local children in need (identified by Prince William County's Head Start Program), 26 seniors living here in PWC, seniors at the Fellowship House in Lake Ridge, and some local families in need that our church supports. There will be plenty of ways to share that Christmas spirit! Distribution of gifts

& food to the families will be on Wednesday, Dec. 18. We will be doing two different parts that day. In the am., we come together to sort the gifts and food, enjoy a time of fellowship mid day, and then come back for distribution to the families in the early afternoon/evening. Watch for an upcoming insert in your bulletins for more Untrim-a-Tree information.

The BUMMs will be getting their Christmas trees at the end of November, and could really use your help selling them during the weeknights and weekends, prior to Christmas. It's also a wonderful time to share in fellowship over the holiday season. The BUMMs cook us such wonderful meals AND support SO many things throughout the church....hopefully we can show them some support as well!

Ongoing mission projects are: ~ Collecting food for the food pantry. ~ Collecting blankets, fall/winter clothing for people in need (shoes, jeans, coats, sweatshirts, socks, gloves, hats, etc.). ~ Collecting Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House (collection container just inside the Fellowship Hall). ~ Collecting Travel size shampoos, conditioners, lotions, toothpaste, individually wrapped tooth-brushes, nail clippers, gum, snacks, and other items the teens can include in our kindness bags for the homeless.

Are you in the midst of a tragic event in your life? Has it shaken your foundation, and made you

question your very being? Has fighting life's battles left you with a feeling of loss, confusion, or

direction? Are you overwhelmed by the problems you’re facing or the pain you’re feeling?

Max Lucado, a New York Times bestselling Christian contemporary author, has

created some study materials that you may find helpful during your time of loss and

confusion.

The book is titled, Praying the Promises. The study guide and twelve session DVD

are titled, Unshakable Hope, building our lives on the Promises of God.

The book is filled with thirty encouraging scriptures and prayers about the promises

of God, that as God's people, we can ponder, proclaim and pray. In Unshakable

Hope, Max Lucado unpacks 12 of the Bible’s most significant promises, equipping

you to overcome difficult circumstances by keeping your focus on the hope found in

the promises of Scripture, rather than dwelling on the problems in front of you. For

every problem in life, God has given you a promise. Will you filter God's promises by

asking cautiously skeptical questions, or plunge forward as Abraham did?

"[Abraham) didn't tiptoe around God's promise asking cautiously skeptical

questions. He plunged into the promise and came up strong, ready for God,

sure that God would make good on what he had said." Romans 4:20-21 MSG.

The Study Guide and DVD are made up of twelve sessions for personal study prior to

a group meetings, and group questions and discussions around the video teachings

from Max Lucado about how the scriptural promise affects your life. Max's introduction here states, "In

a trembling, unsteady world, how do you gain stability, find peace, and learn to trust God?”

The Bethel Historical Society is selling Georgia pecans on a prepaid basis again this year, for your eating and baking pleasure. The price is $11 for a one pound bag of shelled pecan halves. Children’s Sabbath November 3, 2019 is Children's Sabbath. This is a Sabbath when the children of our church will have the opportunity to share their gifts, talents, and the gospel. Perhaps this will be the day when a future teacher, church leader, or even a preacher may be introduced to their calling for the very first time. This day provides a great reason to invite neighbors, friends, and inactive members to bring their children to church.

The theme for this year is "Uniting Hearts and Voices to End Child Poverty Now". Prior to celebrating Children’s Sabbath on November 3, 2019, Bethel will educate the congregation with information regarding the plight of children. By using handouts and visual aids, we will raise a voice of concern about child poverty. The aim is to: ▪ Focus attention on the urgent problems facing children and families—in 2019 the focus is ending child poverty. ▪ Deepen reflection on the teachings, texts, and traditions that call us to respond with care and work for justice. ▪ By raising awareness, reaching out with care, and advocating for justice. we hope to inspire and equip all ages to respond throughout the year to improve the lives of children and families.

Why United Methodists Observe Children’s Sabbath. by Joe Lovino

The United Methodist Church recognizes Children’s Sabbath, as a time to reflect on God’s gift of children, and ways congregations and individuals can renew their commitment to care for, protect, and advocate for all children.

The Children’s Defense Fund has led and organized The National Observance of Children’s Sabbath since 1991. This ecumenical celebration brings together people of all faiths to address the needs of children.

“United Methodists have historically been strong supporters of the Children’s Sabbath,” reports Melanie C. Gordon, Director of Ministry with Children at Discipleship Ministries.

“The focus for Children’s Sabbath is to look deeply at the needs of children, those local and worldwide, and pray for them,” shares the Rev. Leanne Hadley, founder of A Time for Children that coaches United Methodist congregations in developing ministries with children. “The goal is to recognize the needs of children and pray; and during the prayer time, to discern where God might be calling us as the church and as individuals to act.” Gordon adds, “Children’s Sabbath allows us the opportunity to take a fresh look each year at the needs of children in the neighborhoods where we worship, work, and live; and then discover ways to address or meet those needs as people of God.”

Information and action

“People want to think of childhood as a carefree time of joy and happiness,” Hadley reports, “but the reality for kids today is very different. They have needs. They suffer. They worry. They need their emotions to be noticed and prayed for. That is what the Children’s Sabbath is all about.”

United Methodists and our predecessor bodies have a long history of ministering to the needs of children. John and Charles Wesley’s Holy Club taught the poor children of Oxford. John Wesley founded, led and wrote curriculum for the Kingswood School that grew out of the ministries of the New Room in Bristol, England. United Methodist-related Otterbein University and Albright College are named for Jacob Albright, founder of the Evangelical Association, and Philip Otterbein of the United Brethren in Christ, predecessor bodies of The United Methodist Church.

“Works of mercy are part of our history as Methodists,” Gordon says, “and continue to be a central part of how we address justice issues in our world. This aligns with the purpose of the Children Sabbath—advocating for the quality care of all children.”

Hello ladies, Thank you to the ladies that helped provide dinner for the FaithWeaver Friends participants, their families, and all of the volunteers on October 6. It was delish!! During this month of Thanksgiving, we are also so thankful to all of the ladies that donated the food and drinks for the reception following the Charge Conference, on October 29th. You ladies always out do yourselves. Mark your calendars: November 9 from 9-2 we will be hosting a Vendor Blender. The following vendors will be here selling wonderful items that could make great Christmas gifts; Thirty one, Avon, Deb’s Baskets, Tupperware, DoTerra, Diane’s Blankets, Scentsy, and books written by our very own Jamey Long. The women’s group will be selling the famous homemade vegetable beef soup, chicken BBQ, homemade rolls, and baked goods that we just know you will enjoy! If you would like to donate baked goods, or any of the soup ingredients, please see the sign up sheet in the narthex. Donating ingredients will help with our fundraising efforts. Our next UMW monthly meeting is Monday, November 18th, at 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. We will be holding a brief monthly meeting, and then assembling Thanksgiving baskets for several families. December 9th, at 6:30 pm., will be our Annual UMW Christ-mas Party. All ladies are invited!! Bring a dish to share and a $10 gift for the white elephant gift exchange (which is always ALOT of fun!). We hope you will join us to celebrate Christmas with the other ladies of our church family. Our first UMW monthly meeting of the new year will be held January 20th, at 7 pm in the Fellowship Hall. We will be a planning for 2020. In January, we are also looking to possibly start up our Bible Study on Wednesday nights again...more to come on that.
