4.4: Overview of Cellular Respiration Key idea: The overall process of cellular

respiration converts sugar into ATP using oxygen.

Recall

•  Autotrophs = organisms that can produce their own energy

•  Plants use photosynthesis to create sugars (stored energy)

Recall •  Heterotrophs = organisms

that must consume to obtain energy •  Humans eat plants, and

use their sugars to make ATP •  Which cell organelle

Cellular Respiration: •  Cellular respiration (CR) = Breaks down

glucose in mitochondria to make ATP •  Aerobic process = oxygen required to

occur

Steps •  Glycolysis (pre-step) 1.  Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle 2.  Electron Transport Chain

Steps (write on the side) •  Glycolysis (must occur before CR) –  Anaerobic (no O2 needed) –  Occurs in cytoplasm –  Breaks apart glucose to make reactants for CR

Glycolysis:

Stage 1: Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle •  Goal: Rearrange carbon molecules until

energy-carrying molecules (NADH and FADH2) are created
