Do-Now Title: “Intro. to Fermentation Do-Now”

1.  Write the FLT Fill in the blanks with the correct term:

2.  _________ = chemical energy 3.  _________ uses light energy to create sugars 4.  _________ Cellular respiration occurs here 5.  _________ Process that creates ATP 6.  _________ is the stage of cellular respiration

that produces the MOST ATP.

Planner: • ToC #3 due by Wed. 12/2 • Finish project!!!!!!!!

Table of Contents #3 21.  Cellular Respiration Quiz Review 22.  Intro. To Fermentation Do-Now 23.  4.6 Power Notes 24.  4.6 Study Guide

Standard •  HS-LS2-3: Construct and revise an explanation based on

evidence for the cycling of matter and flow of energy in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

FLT •  I will be able to distinguish between aerobic

respiration and anaerobic fermentation by completing Power Notes 4.6

Notes Protocol

• Take notes at Noise Level 0 • Raise your hand to question/comment • Be prepared to pair-share

4.6: Fermentation Key idea: Fermentation allows the production of a small amount

of ATP without oxygen.

Recap: Cellular Respiration •  Our body’s cells rely on ATP for energy •  ATP is primarily synthesized during cellular respiration

Recap: Cellular Respiration •  Glycolysis – Breaks down glucose to make 3-carbon reactants – Anaerobic

•  Krebs/CA Cycle (Mitochondria) – Produces energy carriers and releases CO2 – Aerobic

•  ETC (Mitochondria) – Produces lots of ATP + releases H2O – Aerobic

Steps of CR

What if you’re low on oxygen?

No oxygen? •  During heavy exercise, your body becomes deprived of

oxygen. •  Your body must rely on a less effective, anaerobic

process called fermentation Fermentation

11/29/15&

4&

Recall •  Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm BEFORE cellular

respiration •  Since it is anaerobic, it can still occur without oxygen! •  Glycolysis STILL occurs before fermentation

Recap: Cellular Respiration • Glycolysis – Uses NADH to occur – Releases 2 net ATP

•  Krebs/CA Cycle (Mitochondria) – Releases up to 2 ATP

•  ETC (Mitochondria) – Releases up to 34 ATP

Steps of CR

•  Fermentation = process that allows glycolysis to continue to make ATP when O2 isn’t available •  Fermentation makes ZERO ATP & glycolysis makes

2 ATP •  Fermentation occurs when your body lacks

oxygen

Two Types of Fermentation: Lactic Acid Fermentation Alcoholic Fermentation

•  Lactic acid fermentation = occurs in animal cells, including our muscle cells – Restarts glycolysis by recycling NADH – Produces lactic acid

• When lactic acid builds up, it can cause muscles to fatigue and burn

11/29/15&

5&

• Alcoholic Fermentation = Occurs in yeast cells and some bacteria – Restarts glycolysis by recycling NADH – Produces CO2 & ethyl alcohol

• CO2 release causes bread dough to rise

Uses of Fermentation •  Fermentation is used in food production 1. Yogurt 2. Cheese 3. Bread

Quick Review: Photosynthesis or CR? 1. Which produces sugar? 2. Which produces carbon dioxide? 3. Which produces oxygen? 4. Which produces water? 5. Which produces ATP?

Pair-Share-Respond 1.  Under what conditions will fermentation

occur? 2.  What “stage” occurs in both fermentation

and cellular respiration? 3.  What are the two types of fermentation? 4.  How much ATP does fermentation

produce?

Classwork

• Noise level 1 • Work on the 4.6 reinforcement and study

guide • PROJECT!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! ! !

1.  LS1 Part B Review Packet

Standard •  HS-LS2-3: Construct and revise an explanation based on

evidence for the cycling of matter and flow of energy in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

FLT •  I will be able to review my understanding of

cellular energetics by completing LS1 Part B Review Packet

Tennis Ball Activity • Groups of 3-4 • Assign group roles • Have a timer out • Make sure to count accurately

Tennis Ball Activity • First, test out squeezing the ball " make

sure your group member is fully squeezing. It should be visibly dented.

Tennis Ball Activity • Next, prepare the timer. The timer must

call time every 10 seconds for two whole minutes (no breaks)

Tennis Ball Activity • Once time begins, the counter must

count how many times the tennis ball squeezer SUCCESSFULLY squeezes the tennis ball every ten seconds (not total).

Tennis Ball Activity 1.  Timer – every 10 sec for 2 minutes 2.  Squeezer – must cause indentation 3.  Counter – total every 10 seconds 4.  Write numbers in data table

Tennis Ball Activity • After time is up, repeat the procedure

with someone else.

CW • Complete the review packet

independently or with one partner • Use notes if needed • Keep this packet and use it to help guide

your studying over break • Finished early? TURN IN PROJECT & work

on your ToC assignments
