FROM THE MINISTER…...

Once the clocks turn forward for daylight savings, you know that it’s nearly time for exams, and that

with a bit more sunlight and warmth around it’s a good time for getting out and about. It is a good

time for sharing the gifts and blessings that God gives us with the community around us. Almost every

weekend in November has something different to engage with…

This weekend (the last in October), we are taking some time in our worship to remember those who

have died, to give thanks for what they always mean to us, to give thanks that they are alive to God,

and to pray for each other. We are also celebrating baptism, at the contemporary service, giving

thanks for the new life that God births in us.

Next weekend, while the Traditional congregation will celebrate worship at 9am as usual, the

Contemporary congregation is going to take a one-week break. Many of the congregation have plans

for the weekend which will take them to other places. Rather than run a service without any of the

usual leadership, those from the Contemporary congregation who are around on the weekend are

being encouraged to visit with the Traditional service and/or share with each other in fellowship at a

park or elsewhere, and perhaps use the opportunity to invite other friends to join them as well, and so

share the celebration of God’s love more broadly in some way.

The following weekend, on 10 November, the Voices of Frankston choir are combining with the

Australian Welsh Male Choir for what will be a wonderful Saturday afternoon concert. It will be a great

concert to support and enjoy.

The weekend after that, we will be flinging the doors wide open for the Food Fair. This is always a

popular event with the community, with our combination of delicious food and warmth of welcome.

We have some involvement with the "Festival of Lights" on 24 November, with Christian Crafts for

kids, then as we get towards December we'll slow down the pace. We will be looking for people to be

involved in the Family Christmas Celebration service at 5pm on Christmas Eve – it’s great to have

plenty of congregation members there to share the joy of Christ’s birth, and extend welcome to the

visitors and friends who come to share in that service.

In this season of spring activity, I’m very thankful for God’s love for us and for the life we share. May

God’s blessings and care be with you,

David

By 1982, now employed by Kelvinator/ EMAIL

(Electric Meter and Allied Industries Limited),

Roy and Marie move to Victoria, first residing

in South Yarra then finally settling in

Frankston. By acquisition the company Roy

finally worked for was Diamond Key

International, all his work since 1969 being

associated with petroleum measurement

and terminal automation.

In 1994 Marie and Roy lose youngest son

Richard aged only thirty-three. With heavy

hearts the family say goodbye, leaving an

indelible hole with in the lives of those that

Richard’s life touched. Roy and Marie spend

another twenty-eight years of marital

unification and love, up until Marie’s passing

in 2010.

What is supremely apparent whilst sitting in

the home Marie Giesemann created for

both Roy and she, was a visceral sense of

grandly honest, authentically happy

memories encapsulated in love; leaving Roy

a connection between himself and life’s

divine divide of aethers with those he loves.

Roy has gone on to receive a life time

membership with the Institute of Engineers

Australia, was the 2017 recipient of Frankston

Senior Citizen of the Year Award, and works

tirelessly for the Frankston Information Centre.

Can you imagine the excitement and perhaps

even trepidation Henry Giesemann, an immigrant

of German descent, born in 1870 felt as he

boarded the “Humboldt” for its voyage across the

miles and miles of ocean and seas, in its quest to

arrive upon the shores of Australia. One lady who

was indeed glad this gentleman made the journey

was that of his Queensland born wife Caroline.

Together Henry and Caroline Giesemann had nine

children, three daughters and six sons, with Roy

Giesemann the youngest of the nine children. Roy

was born in the year of 1930 in the Brisbane suburb

of Wynnum, Queensland. In 1943 Roy started

boarding school at Brisbane Grammar until his

completion in 1946. Roy soon found employment in

the electrical trades whilst also spending three

hours, five days a week attending night school at

the Queensland Institute of Technology (QIT)

earning himself a Diploma in Engineering. Roy’s first

official placement and employment as an

engineer was found at Mobil Australia where he

remained until 1969.

In 1954 Roy attends the ‘Cloudroom’, a majestic

ballroom set in the heart of Brisbane. There he was

to meet his future bride and love of his life Marie

Hudson, a nurse from Brisbane General. Within a

year of locking eyes with Marie the two are wed at

Albert Street Methodist, Brisbane. 1956 brings the

blessing of their first-born son Peter. In that same

year Roy, Marie and new born Peter move to

Papua New Guinea for Roy’s work with Mobil. The

six years spent between Lae and Port Moresby see

the birth of an additional two miracles, daughter

Colleen and their youngest son Richard.

Upon returning to Queensland the Giesemann’s

spend time in both Bundaberg and Townsville until

1966. Work commitments with Mobil find Roy and

the Giesemann family travelling again, this time to

South Australia.

Can you testify over a person of great

influence, or someone you would perhaps

consider to be a hero of yours?

Roy is indebted to the late Hugh Trewartha, in

his empathy, kind-heartedness, all inclusive

thoughtfulness and compassionately

charitable nature.

When where you first introduced to the High

Street Uniting Church?

Roy attended Wesley Methodist for the main

events on the Christian calendar or for other

engagements of significance, which

continued on through the unification of St

Andrew’s and Wesley Methodist to what we

now recognize as HSUC. It wasn’t until the

passing of Marie Giesemann and the pastoral

care Roy received from Rev Robert Johnson

before, during and after organising the

memorial service for his beautiful wife, that the

light of the holy spirit shone like a tongue of fire

within Roy’s broken heart. As if guided by

Richard and Marie this light found Roy’s

involvement with HSUC become a valued part

of his everyday Christian living and the rest as

they say is history. A history of which Roy

Giesemann uses to enrich the lives of those

that his faith effects.

Do you have a favourite story or passage from

the bible?

After the passing of Roy and Marie’s youngest

son Richard, Roy found and still does find

comfort in The New King James Version of The

Shepherd’s Psalm; Psalm 23.

For Roy this Psalm enriched his personal and

spiritual solace two-fold. The comfort of Psalm

23 provided Roy’s soul whilst within the turmoil

of losing his youngest child a sense of strength,

providing hope that Richard would find his

way home among the Lord and Holy Spirit.

Additionally it presented a personal

commentary that he to, whilst finding himself

among the depths of darkness and despair

was destined to find the light of living again

within his spirit and soul.

If you could describe your life in one word;

what would that word be?

FAMILY

ROY GIESEMANN,

THANK YOU
