If you have been around the area of Longbridge lately,
you couldn’t have failed to notice the construction
work on Bournville College’s new build firmly taking
shape. The new £66 million campus will be ready for
students in September 2011, replacing the existing
three campuses.
You are going to be impressed by the new facilities, spanning
six storeys over 4.2 acres of land (i.e. two football pitches).
The purpose-built, state-of-the-art environment will offer fantastic
facilities for construction, hairdressing, beauty, catering, sport and
many other areas. In addition, we will be offering new courses in
motor vehicle maintenance and electronics.
If you’re leaving school in the summer of 2011, the new Bournville
College is the obvious choice.

SWEET EXPERIENCE
FOR BOURNVILLE STUdENTS...Two Bournville College students received a golden ticket for the real
chocolate experience at Cadbury. Suriyah Bi (18) from Stechford
and Ian Rudge (17) from Quinton, studying the BTEC Level 3
Extended Diploma in Applied Science as part of the Career Academy
at Bournville College spent 4 days at Cadbury, learning the art of
chocolate-making.
During the visit, Suriyah and Ian were given an opportunity to
design, develop and produce their own chocolate bar. Ian designed
a chocolate bar aimed at children, containing Cadbury Dairy Milk,
white chocolate and shortbread. He named it Choc Chipcuit.
On the other hand, Suriyah’s chocolate bar ‘Wild Sensation’,
developed for female audience, was made from papaya, chilli,
pecan and cashew nuts, mixed with Dairy Milk.
Bournville College offers a range of Career Academies such as
those in Media, Business, Sport, Applied Science and Travel &
Tourism. Each Career Academy is linked to a specific BTEC Extended
Diploma in a related subject and offers an excellent progression
route to higher education or employment. Career Academies enable
students to take part in extra course related activities such as guru
lectures, industry visits and internships. Call 0121 483 1111 or email
[email protected] to find out more.

Matt andrewsCONSTRUCTION STUdENTS ShINE AT A COMPETITIONTwo Bournville brickwork students took part in a recent Guild of Bricklayers
competition. Matt Andrews (18) from Kings Heath who is studying Construction
Diploma - Trowel Occupations Level 2 was entered into the junior level of the
competition. He was given a 5 hour time limit to build a pier and a wall. Judges
were impressed with his effort and awarded him 3rd place.
Similarly, Nathan Harborne (19) from Kings Norton who is studying the same
course as Matt was entered to the competition but at the senior level. Nathan
was given 6 hours to demonstrate a range of advanced brickwork techniques.
He was the youngest in the senior level group and his respectable 4th place is
well deserved. Well done both!
If you’re thinking about studying brickwork, painting & decorating, electrics or
plumbing, you can visit the Construction Centre during one of our Open Days.

UNI OR NOT UNI?If you’re thinking about going to a university
after college, Bournville College is the place to
choose. We have excellent progression rates to
universities - last year over 260 students went to
a university to further their study.
If you’re looking for a course with a good
chance of a university place, you may want to
choose one which has a progression agreement
with a university. With progression agreements,
a partnership university specifies exactly what
you need to do to get onto one of their courses.
We have progression agreements with local
universities on many of our courses, including
Aston University, University of Birmingham,
Birmingham City University, Newman University
College and Wolverhampton University. To find
a list of courses at Bournville College which
have a progression agreement, visit www.herouteplanner.co.uk
On a quest to prove that there is a lot of talent hidden among its
students, Bournville College launched its own version of ‘Britain’s
got Talent’ called ‘Bournville’s got Talent’.
The competition was a popular one, with many students queuing to show off
their skills. There were six finalists in total and the overall winner of the competition
was Nezetia Johnson from Newtown, a gospel singer studying BTEC National
Diploma in Travel & Tourism. Nezetia impressed judges by her musical talent and
originality she brought to the contest. Top prize worth over £150 consisting of a
Nintendo DS Lite and High Street vouchers made Nezetia even more proud of her
talent. She said: ‘I am delighted that I took part in Bournville’s Got Talent, to show
off my passion for singing. It’s an experience I’ll never forget; upon hearing the news
that I won I was shocked but happy. I must commend the team and staff at
Bournville who had helped to put this
plan into action.’
All six finalists have also received
a VIP hair and make-up treatment
in the College’s hair and beauty
salons followed by a professional
photoshoot. The photos
will be used in the Young
Persons Course Guide for
2011/12.

Do you want to work in media, communications, film or journalism?
A media course at Bournville College can help you get there.
Bournville College offers a good range of media courses.
You will be taught by friendly and supportive
staff who will develop your skills through
a variety of lectures, workshops, role
plays, tutorials and productions.
Throughout the year, media students
get involved in various trips and visits.
In June, students went on a study
trip to Berlin where they visited the
National Film Museum, Television
Tower, Brandenburg Gate and
many more.
Another visit to Stratford-Upon-Avon
helped BTEC Media students complete
their assignment for the Production
Management module. Their brief was
to produce a short 30 second advert
promoting Stratford’s facilities to visitors.
The students had spent two weeks
prior to the visit creating storyboards,
mapping out locations and researching
the area. On the day, students had to
work in groups to collect all necessary
footage for the advert.

BOTSWANA PROJECTBournville students on BTEC First National
Diploma in Childcare took part in a fundraising
project to support children in Botswana.
The project was initiated by Sue Gaffey -
Curriculum Leader (Early Years) and Wendy
Church - Lecturer in Pre-Vocational Studies.
Wendy is passionate and very involved in
supporting Botswana’s orphans, children
with disabilities and those suffering with
AIDS and HIV. She said: ‘Botswana is one of
the most stable African countries politically,
however, has the world’s second highest
number of people suffering with AIDS or HIV.
It is predicted that around 200,000 orphans
will be left in Botswana as a result of high
mortality rate connected to AIDS.
Wendy still regularly visits Botswana where she and her best friend Dr Elizabeth Gillett
help to run two day care centres and a counselling centre. Her passion encouraged
Bournville childcare students to make their contribution towards helping these children.
The students had a tough job to do, thinking of a range of games and other presents
they could prepare for the children. Kate Hibbert, a childcare student, said: ‘There are
huge cultural differences between Botswana and the UK and so we had to think hard
about relevant presents. For example, they would not know what a dog looks like or why
people would have animals as pets. However, if you show them a picture of an elephant
they instantly know what it is.’
Students chose to prepare a range of games and interactive activities for the children
which involved use of basic numeracy and literacy, as well as hand-eye co-ordination.
Some of the games included lacing and threading, matching of 2D and 3D shapes,
hopscotch and a parachute game with a set of instructions. The next stage of the project
will involve students doing fundraising activities.
