It’s been a busy year at Boxer since we produced our last catalogue, we have seen our trikes be accepted by the international cargo biking community with gusto and at the time of writing we are shipping our fi rst major orders to the USA.

2015 also saw our Rocket being featured in the London Design Museum and receiving a multitude of international cycling and design press accolades. Our Rocket grew to be a 6 seater for kindergartens and large families but 2015 also saw the fi rst Rocket to be modifi ed with a removable side to carry a disabled person.

Our innovative Shuttle has also gone from strength to strength with widespread recognition of the advantages of its unique slide out bumper design allowing it to be fi tted with our optional bike rack, baby buggy tray or to simply use it to carry more ‘stuff ’ outside of the box. Like the Rocket and Cargo, the Shuttle’s good looks are preserved with its battery hidden underfl oor – you won’t fi nd any shake-itself-to-bits ugly Chinese rear battery racks on a Boxer.

In spring 2016 the second version of our ‘Cargo’ will be launched, it has adjustable wide handlebars and a slam shut lockable roller door. Perfect for couriers wanting to carry larger items at speed – and a lot better looking than a rear loading trike.

One item that has been very popular with our customers has been our vehicle grade safety light and horn set, this allows all of our bikes to be seen and heard at exactly the same level of intensity as a motor vehicle. Unlike low power ebike lighting and signalling systems currently available on the market our 12 Volt system punches out very bright turn signal indicator, stop/tail and headlight lighting, all controlled via single easy to use ‘cluster switch’ on the handlebars. Only Boxer off ers you a system like this at this stage.

Jeremy Davies – Managing Director

Our story started in 2008 when designer Jeremy Davies hand built his fi rst cargo tricycle after struggling to fi nd car parking spaces when doing the school run.

This fi rst trike was a self-confessed ‘Frankentrike’ called The Lobster, with huge wheels, fat bike tyres and leaning parallelogram front suspension. Whilst this design achieved the goal of being able to rapidly negotiate the rough tracks of the Dorset’s Purbeck hills by leaning into turns and by having huge suspension range, its cargo carrying capability was limited to one child or a dog and not much else due to the space needed by its tilting wheels - basically it wasn’t practical.

The next version was a non-suspension electric cargo trike with 20″ front and 26″ rear wheels, which proved to be a great success: it could carry four kids and a dog and with its 250W electric motor it could scale a 14% gradient with a max gross weight of 270kg! This trike was soon doing pretty much everything the family’s second car was doing and was clocking up 60 miles a week just doing the school runs, taking the dog to the beach, or doing the weekly shopping. In its fi rst month of use, the trike attracted so much attention that orders for four others were taken.

The rest is history!

Made in the UK At Boxer Cycles we pride ourselves on our commitment to make our cycles in the UK, and to support our fellow British suppliers. It is all too easy these days to outsource cycle manufacturing to Taiwan or China, but that is not what our brand is about.

We value the interaction between our team and our suppliers, and we enjoy our ‘cup of tea and biscuit’ based brainstorming sessions, staring at a pile of aluminium tubes and a pencil-drawn sketch. This is the way design and engineering should be: collaborative and spontaneous. It allows all parties involved to feel a sense of satisfaction and achievement when the fi nished product is revealed.

We rejoice in the fact that we are entering into a burgeoning international market for high quality, handmade British goods, alongside manufacturers like Morgan, Pashley and Rolls Royce, to name but a few. We don’t have any parts made of French polished walnut yet – but we are working on it!
