Meets in the Upper RoomNovember 12 - Cathedral CenterAs a result of a community wide collaboration to address the lack of shelter space for women and children, Cathedral Center began as Milwaukee’s first and only women’s overflow shelter in 1996. First operating in common areas of local churches, the emergency shelter program was a partnership of the American Red Cross, Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee, Columbia St. Mary’s, Milwaukee County Department of Health & Human Services, Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and Catholic Charities. The Cathedral Center now serves nearly 1,000 women and families in crisis each year, working individually with them to develop a strategic, personal plan toward independence that helps to secure housing, grow income and improve personal skills.November 19A Reformation Class with John ParadowskiLuther and Music: Is it really a big deal?Yes, we know that Martin Luther loved music, but is it really a huge deal for us today? Did Martin’s Music affect others outside the Lutheran Church? Come and find out more information about Mr. Martin and why the Bass line changed the musical world. We will also put to rest the myth that “A Mighty Fortress” is a song that Martin took from the local bar and wrote church words. He actually wrote that one all by himself.Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. - Martin Luther

Please note: The Live Streaming was not working on June 18. We will restore the service as soon as possible.

Breaking the Chains Prison Ministry is REAL and HAPPENING in MilwaukeeWould you like to get involved?Breaking the Chains is a newly-formed ministry of the ELCA located within the walls of the Felmers Chaney Correctional Center at 30th and Fond du Lac in Milwaukee. Pastor Thompson has indicated that there are specific volunteer opportunities for those interested in supporting inmates as they prepare for release: * A one-time opportunity to gather

together with other volunteers along the fence outside the Chaney facility at the Saturday p.m. service for part of the Christmas Eve service. Volunteers meet at 7:15 p.m. with candles to sing “Silent Night” at the same time the inmates are at the windows of the center singing “Silent Night.” In the past, this has created a powerful moment of God’s presence in the lives of all who participate.

• Help with the newsletter. Sign up on the Events Sign-Up panel in today’s bulletin if you are interested in helping in these ways.

SAINTS November Meeting - Wednesday, November 15 at 11:30 a.m. “Stars and Stripes Wisconsin - Honor Flight” Every Day Is A Bonus Stars and Stripes Honor Flight puts this slogan on each hat and each shirt worn by the veterans and their guardians on the day of their Honor Flight. Simply stated, Stars and Strips Honor Flight flies our most senior veterans to Washington D.C. to see the memorials that stand in their honor. The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight story was told one person, one small group at a time, and grew from tiny fundraisers to partnerships with many local businesses, organizations, and individuals, who have all stepped forward to ensure that our WWII, Korean and Vietnam War veterans feel appreciated. To date, Stars and Stripes Honor Flight, Inc. has flown over 4,500 veterans to see their memorials in Washington D.C. Please join us on Nov. 15 to hear stories and learn more about this organization that has undertaken a task that most would say is impossible. The presenters have asked that any member of the SAINTS group and/or member of St. Matthews who has been on an Honor Flight let Julia Murphy know before the meeting on Nov. 15. Lunch will feature “make your own” sandwiches, salad, and good ol’ American apple pie for dessert. Please let us know if you will be attending by calling the church office (414-774-0441) or on the sheet at the Welcome Center. Although it is helpful to know the number of people who will be joining us for lunch, please feel free to attend, even if you did not register.Contact Julia Murphy through the church office or email [email protected] if you have questions or concerns.

Hygiene, Cleaning Products Needed by Reformation for “SonShine” Gifts Bags Many of the families served by Reformation live with food insecurity on a regular basis. Some receive SNAP benefits that help them put food on the table, but they do not cover such necessary items as personal hygiene supplies, cleaning products, and laundry products. Though they are necessities, the cost of those products can put them out of reach of low-income families. Reformation is helping to provide those necessary items by distributing “SonShine” gift bags as part of its “Strong Women Strong Babies” outreach. If you can help fill the bags with these essential goods, please bring items from the list below to the collection bin under the coat racks across from the office (next to the food pantry bins). Items needed are:

• Toilet tissue, single wrapped roll • Tampons and sanitary pads• Dish detergent (13 oz/small) • Toothpaste and toothbrushes• Ivory bar soap, family size • Cleaning sponges and cloths• Laundry detergent, one-load boxes • Pine-Sol cleaner

Synod Support: Your help is needed - Your gift will be matched TWICE!One of the organizations that we support yearly with our benevolence dollars, is our Synod – The Greater Milwaukee Synod of Wisconsin. Our synod, led by our Bishop, Paul Erickson, supports the ministries of our ELCA Lutheran congregations throughout the South Eastern region of Wisconsin (from the Illinois border north to Sheboygan and from the lake west to Oconomowoc). The Synod’s work involves activities such as supporting us through the clergy call process (three times here recently at St. Matt’s with call committees calling new pastors), financially helping various inner city ministries such as our partners Reformation and Cross, supporting financially our national church ELCA and all of its ministries, offering education opportunities to clergy and congregations, and helping congregations that are in crisis, just to name a few. This year we have a special opportunity for you to donate to our synod with each of your dollars being matched twice (once by St. Matthew’s benevolence dollars and again by a family at church). Please consider making a donation to the important work our synod does and have it matched twice over. All donations labeled for Synod Support up to $6000 will matched. Thank you for supporting the work of our Greater Milwaukee Synod!

Come to Thanksgiving Eve Worship7:00 on Wednesday Nov. 22ndJoin Us for an Evening Service Giving Thanks to GodAs winter darkness crosses the land, the nation takes time to offer thanks for the harvest and the abundant resources of this land. While this holiday witnesses many households gathering for a festive meal, Christians recognize that the source of all good things is the God who feeds the birds and clothes the grass of the field. As we share these gifts, we are knit together into a community whose mission is among those who are poor and in need. We offer thanks to God for the bounty of the land and seek to share these riches with all in need. Please bring a food item to share with the hungry. Pie Social follows Thanksgiving WorshipPie and Jesus—Giving Thanks at St. Matthew’s!Thanksgiving Eve is a festive time where we give thanks, offer our offerings of food and money, and a time when we take time and celebrate with PIE! It’s even better than cake!! The Fellowship Committee will once again host and serve pie with your choice of cream (ice or whipped), coffee and milk. Please sign up if you are willing to share a pie with us—as we need a number of pies to supplement our supply of apple, pumpkin, and cherry. Pies can be dropped off in the kitchen before Wednesday night worship.

Mark your calendars: The Lutheran A Cappella Choir of Milwaukee will hold its annual Christmas concert at St. Matthew’s on Sunday, December 3rd at 3 p.m., featuring Andrew Carter’s Magnificat which will include a 20-voice children’s choir and a chamber orchestra, bell choir and organ. Tickets will be available from choir members and at the door.
