Pak Patriot, a Siladen villager, describes the ë mythicí creature as having the ì head of a horse and the body of a snakeî , and measuring more than 5m. Local � shermen from Siladen � rst noticed the mysterious creature gliding through the beautiful coral garden beside the islandí s western coast in the fading light of late afternoon.

Pak Patriot says he was just a boy when he � rst glimpsed the aquatic equine-serpent, but even today he remembers that evening on the beach. Oddly, after almost four decades the Siladen villagers havení t seen another of its kind.

It might seem impossible that such creatures could remain hidden from a community where children are exposed to rare and exotic marine animals from the day they are born ñ until you consider the geography of Siladen.

Located on the edge of the Marine Park, the waters around the island plunge to 1,566m ñ more than enough briny deep to hide an encyclopaediaí s worth of exotic creatures that spend an entire lifetime without ever seeing the sun. And with new species of marine animals being discovered as recently as 2008, ití s easier to see how a ë sea serpentí

might go undiscovered for decades. Only 3% of Bunaken National Marine Park reserve is terrestrial, including Bunaken Island, and the islands of Manado Tua, Mantehage, Nain and Siladen.

Bunakení s explosion of marine biodiversity makes it a top destination, not only for marine scientists but also for scuba divers in search of the trip of a lifetime. With more than 90 species of � sh and 390 species of coral, even the most salty reef veteran is sure to catch a glimpse of something theyí ve never seen before.

ì Bunaken is a like a miniature representation of the entire Coral Triangle,î observes Dr Lida Pet Soede, the Director of the World Wildlife Fund for Natureí s Coral Triangle Programme ñ an international conservation effort that spans the spectacularly diverse seascapes of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste.

ì You have every environment from shallow-water mangrove forests and 25ñ 50m vertical coral reef walls to the deep sea trench where ití s possible to see very large animals underwater,î Soede adds.

Bunaken National Marine Park is a marine reserve ñ just off the northern tip of Sulawesi in eastern Indonesia ñ extending over 890km2. Tommy Schultz goes in search of its many underwater treasures, including a sea serpent that hasní t been sighted for 40 years.

Sharp-eyed divers on Siladen Island will notice something unusual while walking back to their villas after their morning dives. Several large dome-like brick structures grown over with the snaking roots and twisted branches of a banyan tree can be seen just beside the islandí s main beach. The overgrown buildings are reminiscent of Cambodiaí s legendary Angkor Wat temples, but Siladení s relics are from a more recent date. In the late 1800s, a few hardy Dutch entrepreneurs were making bricks on the island for shipment to nearby Manado. On a windless day under the equatorial sun, ití s not difficult to imagine how hot it must have been to work the huge kilns piled high with blazing � rewood.

Beberapa pohon beringin yang besar dan rimbun dengan akarnya yang panjang banyak terdapat di sepanjang pantai. Bangunan-bangunan yang besar mengingatkan pada kuil Angkor Wat di Kamboja yang terkenal, tetapi bedanya bangunan di Siladen ini baru saja dibangun. Di akhir tahun 1800-an, Belanda membuat batu bata di pulau ini untuk kemudian dikirim ke Manado. Thatí s why Ií m scanning the cobalt-blue panorama of the deep trench beside the spectacular coral wall at Alung Banua – you never know what you might see swimming by in the open water in a place like this. Just last night I heard tales of orca sightings in Bunaken from Daniele Marianelli, the man behind the Siladen Resort & Spa, a scuba diver-friendly collection of tasteful bungalows thatí s rated one of the best resorts in the park. In between sips of fresh mango juice by the pool, Marianelli also tells me of recent whale shark and sperm whale sightings.

The macro photo geek in me is excited to see smaller creatures like the extremely rare blue-ringed octopus, but nothing captures the imagination of my inner Jacques Cousteau like being dwarfed by the eclipsing shadow of a passing whale shark.

Ten minutes into this dive and weí ve already seen an endangered hawksbill sea turtle, a whole circus of clown� sh, and a porcelain-coloured crab freckled with brown spots living within the protective tentacles of an anemone. My cameraí s memory card is � lling up fast, but Ií m still staring optimistically out into the blue abyss for a glimpse of something huge.

Ten minutes into this dive and weí ve already seen an endangered hawksbill sea turtle, a whole circus of clown� sh, and a porcelain­ coloured crab freckled with brown spots living within the protective tentacles of an anemone.

After an hour, the needle on my tankí s pressure gauge is dropping and ití s time to surface. My guide Delly signals me to pause 3m below the surface for a safety stop. A school of � sh � utters past, shimmering in the silver light beams angling through the surface.

Back on the boat, two French divers from our group are excitedly showing off the photos on their digital camera.

ì Did you see it?î they ask.

ìSe e what?î I ask, already suspecting my inner Jacques Cousteau might be getting rusty.

ìW hale shark!î they shout, with huge smiles on their faces. The unmistakable silhouette of planet Earthí s largest �s h lights up the cameraí s LCD screen.

Missing the whale shark is de� nitely a setback. But I still have another few days here and every dive is like an underwater lottery ticket to spot something amazing.

An hour later, weí re in the water again. This time ití s Depan Kampung, a dive site located at the north end of Bunaken Island.

A shallow coral garden with a circus of darting parrot� sh, � uttering damsel� sh and brilliant coral colonies abruptly gives way to an underwater cliff that plunges as far as I can see.

I have a brief moment of vertigo as the current sweeps me over the precipice. Once again, Ií m scanning the blue horizon for a glimpse of Bunakení s undersea magic ñ imagining Pak Patriotí s legendary sea serpent.

The afternoon sun sparkles through the in� nite seascape when I spot a green sea turtle gliding near the surface on its pectoral wings. With a few kicks of my scuba � ns, Ií m out into open water, swimming alongside.

The turtleí s sharp eyes take in the awkward stranger struggling to keep up. After a few minutes alone with this graceful animal, I stop swimming, snapping a farewell photo with my camera as an old soul of the sea dissolves into the deep.

Taman Nasional Bunaken adalah taman laut lindung seluas 890,65km2 yang terletak di ujung utara Sulawesi, di sebelah timur Indonesia. Empat puluh tahun lalu, naga laut pernah terlihat di tempat ini.Tiga persen dari Taman Nasional ini adalah daratan, termasuk Pulau Bunaken, Manado Tua, Mantehage, Nain dan Siladen.

Pak Patriot, penduduk Desa Siladen menggambarkan sosok ë mistisí itu sebagai makhluk yang memiliki kepala kuda dan tubuh ular, dengan panjang lebih dari lima meter. Para nelayan di Siladen melihat sosok misterius ini sedang merayap di atas terumbu karang yang indah dekat pantai sebelah barat dalam temaram cahaya senja.

Pak Patriot menceritakan dirinya melihat naga laut itu waktu masih kanak-kanak tetapi hal itu masih segar dalam ingatannya hingga kini. Anehnya, setelah hampir 40 tahun penduduk Desa Siladen tak pernah lagi melihat naga laut tersebut.

Sepertinya tidak mungkin bila makhluk ini bisa bersembunyi dari komunitas di mana anak-anak biasa bertemu dengan makhluk laut sejak mereka lahir. Tetapi bila melihat geogra� dari Siladen, hal itu mungkin saja terjadi.

Berada di ujung timur Taman Laut, perairan di sekitar pulau ini memiliki kedalaman hingga 1.566 meter, sehingga sangat mungkin menjadi tempat persembunyian makhluk langka yang menghabiskan seluruh hidupnya tanpa sinar matahari. Dan baru pada tahun 2008, spesies baru binatang laut ditemukan. Masuk akal bila kemudian sang naga laut belum dapat ditemukan hingga bertahun-tahun lamanya.

Anda tak pernah tahu apa yang bisa Anda temui di perairan terbuka seperti ini. Baru tadi malam saya mendengar dari Daniele Marianelli, sosok di balik Siladen Resort and Spa, sekaligus penyelam yang bungalow miliknya merupakan salah satu yang terbaik di Taman Laut ini. Sambil menikmati jus mangga di samping kolam renang, Marianelli bercerita bahwa di Taman Laut ini baru saja terlihat penampakan hiu paus dan paus kepala kotak

Naluri fotografer saya pun bersorak bahagia saat melihat biota laut langka seperti gurita biru, tetapi tak ada yang menandingi perasaan saya ketika menangkap momen di mana bayangan seekor hiu paus melewati kami. Saya seketika merasa seperti seorang petualang dan ilmuwan kelautan ternama, Jacques Cousteau.

Baru sepuluh menit menyelam, kami sudah melihat penyu langka melintas, segerombolan ikan badut, dan kepiting berwarna putih bintik-bintik hidup di tengah-tengah anemon. Memori kamera saya langsung penuh, tetapi saya masih optimis dapat bertemu makhluk laut lain yang lebih spektakuler.

Setelah satu jam menyelam, oksigen dalam tabung yang saya kenakan memaksa saya naik ke permukaan. Pemandu saya Delly mengisyaratkan saya untuk berhenti sejenak sekitar tiga meter dari permukaan. Segerombolan ikan pun lewat, bersinar keperakan hingga tampak ke permukaan.

Di atas kapal, dua orang penyelam asal Perancis dari kelompok kami dengan bahagianya menunjukkan foto-foto yang terekam di kamera digital mereka.

ì Kau lihat tadi?î tanya mereka.

ì Lihat apa?î tanya saya kembali, sambil menyayangkan insting Jacques Cousteau saya yang mulai tak peka.

ì Paus hiu!î ujar mereka setengah berteriak dengan senyum yang mengembang.

Pada layar kamera digital mereka tampak siluet makhluk laut raksasa itu.

Tak berhasil melihat paus hiu sungguh hal yang sangat disayangkan. Tetapi saya masih memiliki beberapa hari lagi di sini, dan menyelam itu bak sebuah lotere dimana Anda bisa saja melihat sesuatu yang menakjubkan.

Satu jam kemudian, kami sudah menyelam lagi. Kali ini kami menyelam di Depan Kampung, sebuah situs menyelam di utara Pulau Bunaken. Taman terumbu karang yang dangkal dimeriahkan sekelompok ikan kakaktua, ikan damsel� sh, dan biota laut lainnya yang berenang menghindari karang yang terbentang sejauh mata memandang.

Saya sempat merasa pusing sekejap saat arus berputar dan membuat saya membentur tebing. Setelah itu, kembali, saya mencari-cari penampakan makhluk misterius itu di dasar laut Bunaken seraya membayangkan sosok naga laut yang diceritakan Pak Patriot.

Sinar matahari menerpa lautan saat mata saya menangkap sosok penyu hijau yang sedang berenang ke permukaan. Hanya dengan sedikit menggerakkan scuba � n yang saya kenakan, saya sudah berada di permukaan laut, berenang di sampingnya.

Mata penyu yang tajam itu menatap sosok asing yang sedang berusaha keras mengimbangi laju sang penyu. Setelah beberapa menit bersama binatang laut ini, saya pun berhenti berenang untuk mengabadikan gambar sang penyu yang berenang kembali ke dalamnya lautan.
