OverviewKorea is an increasingly globalized nation. In many companies English abilities are becoming essential to stay competitive. Therefore having the ability to communicate in English will help prepare you for the business world ahead of you. In this class we will focus on improving your Business English skills, through the medium of discussion, debate and presentation. The aim is for you to leave this course with an improved ability to communicate, in English, in a working environment.

GoalsThe course will be divided into the following sections: Cultural diversity and socializing; Using the telephone; Presentations and Meetings. Each aspect of the course will include model dialogues, examples of real world business language and case studies. The course will also include elements of real world writing such as cover letters and resumes for job application.

Course RequirementsAttendance

Since this course will focus on conversation and discussion, attendance is very important.

80% attendance is required to pass the course (up to 3 unexcused absences are allowed)

You will lose 10 points for each absence. Be on time for class! If you’re late you’ll lose 5 points

from your attendance grade. Being late from our class “Break Time” is included.

Students over 20 minutes late will be considered absent and lose 10 points.

Students MUST bring the Absence Slips to the following class. Any absence slip that was handed in later than the following class will not be accepted.

Excusable absences include the following:Sickness (hand in Doctor’s note)Army Duty (official letter from the military required)Death of a family member (death certificate required)Job interview (stamped letter from the company with interview time handed in)Full-time employment (Company notice, including starting date of employment. Evaluation for this course will include the following (see the Breakdown of Scoring to the bottom right of this page):

Two written assignments, the first worth 5%, the second worth 10%

Two presentations, the first worth 5%, the second worth 10%

One written mid-term and one written final exam Weekly homework assignments Two scheduled quizzes, and up to two pop (surprise)

Participation

Read, write, listen, and SPEAK in English. You can only improve your English by using the language. Participation will be included in your grade. In order to receive full participation points, students must:

¡ Participate fully in class during all activities, volunteering answers and asking questions.

¡ When prompted, work with a team/partner on in class materials

¡ Bring an unused textbook to class¡ DO NOT use mobile phones in class!¡ Complete homework in a timely fashion
