Attending the event, Mayor Karen Farbridge spoke of the many capital proj- ects taking place in the core.“This has been a year of the most ambitious and complex series of projects this City has ever under- taken,” said Farbridge.“It’s been a dramatic and transformational year for downtown. While it has not been easy for many mer- chants, the projects are coming to an end and I can now see it all coming together.” Included in the projects, major road con- struction to Carden St. was completed in the late summer and Market Square in front of City Hall, with its outdoor rink and heated pavilion is to be opening in early January. Also on Carden St., from Wyndham St. to Macdonell St., work continues on the new inter-modal transit terminal, designed to improve connections between Guelph’s local bus service and regional public transit systems including Greyhound, GO Transit and VIA Rail. Due to open in the spring, commuters will be able to use the GO train service from Guelph to Toronto for the expected cost of $11.70 for a one-way ticket. Come January, visitors can experience the new Guelph Civic Museum with an official Grand OpeningWeekend celebration on Feb 24 to 26. The $12.7 million adaptive reuse project has transformed Loretto Convent, built between 1850 and 1890, into a space that will host a variety of events and exhibits throughout the year and house a collection of approximately 30,000 items. “We are working to create vibrant urban spaces that will attract people and employ- ers; where all people can flourish,”adds Farbridge.“Our path forward will create a downtown that is even more vibrant in 20 years than it is today, while preserving Guelph’s character as we grow.” Guelph’s Downtown Secondary Plan has growth targets of an additional 6,000 resi- dents and 1,500 jobs in the downtown core over the next 20 years. With a proposed 500,000 square feet of office and institu- tional space, and 300,000 square feet of retail space. Many of these developments are projected for within the historical core, with approximately 80% of the growth just south of the railway tracks. Last year, Tricar Group purchased the high-end condominium tower located in the former Co-operators building on Macdonell St. The 18 level high-rise with 15 floors of residential space, expects to bring approximately 150 residential units to the core; plus lower level parking, commer- cial and retail space. The top three floors of the Douglas St. Gummer building will bring up to 20 open- concept apartments to the downtown. With an approximate completion date of Sept. 2012,the building will also have available office space and street-level retail space. The Community Improvement Plan has assisted many property owners in renovat- ing their buildings to create more usable spaces, as well as update facades. With all the new projects being completed, new ren- ovations to existing properties, new jobs and new property owners, now more than ever it is a great time to visit downtown Guelph. “There have been challenges and there are many more issues to work through, but there are many positive signs that we are moving in the right direction,”says Marty Williams,Executive Director for the Downtown Guelph Business Association. “New stores have opened, new investments have been made; businesses and people are choosing downtown Guelph. In our short- term plan we are working to find new ways to promote what we already have through different marketing initiatives. One step is creating more direct connections between merchant members and the various events that take place downtown.” “We are working to promote develop- ment that brings more businesses and more residents to downtown Guelph,”adds Williams.“We need to work creatively with all stakeholders to make sure that we have development that we can be proud of, and which encourages more people to live, work, and invest in the heart of our city." New location for Milburn Auto Sales and Service Operating since 1969,the independent car store will soon relocate to a brand new 10,000 square foot facility at 219 Brock Road North. Five times the size of their current location, the space has an indoor and outdoor showroom with room for up to 200 used late model cars. Ten serv- ice bays with drive through service will provide customers with express lube, two- and four-wheel alignment, detailing, maintenance and repair. Aqua Pavers will cover most of the outdoor parking display area. The permeable interlocking surface supports storm water management by allowing for natural drainage and a natural filtra- tion process, removing pollutants from the runoff. Continuing with the green approach, a 30-foot outdoor display unit will reduce heat penetration through the side of the building, therefore reducing the interior heating and cooling uses. “We are committed to being here for the next 25 years or more, and with this new facility we are looking forward to doubling our personnel while offering our customers a unique shopping experi- ence.”says Robert Milburn,Owner of Milburn Auto Sales. The Guelph Chamber of Commerce is a partner in developing Guelph’s sus-

tainability strategy, including economic, environmental, social, and cultural con-

nections between businesses and organizations in our community. Thanks to

support from theTrillium Foundation of Ontario, this project has been funded,

and a website has been developed:www.sustainabilityguelph.ca.Over the past

two years workshops and discussions have taken place to create collaborations

between these four pillars of sustainability, and many businesses have been

interviewed face to face. The results have been:

Economic: The Guelph Chamber is naturally leading economic discussions: howto succeed in business regardless of business size and type.Common themes

are personal development, sales and marketing, and making business to business connections. The Guelph

Chamber has partnered with the City of Guelph and University of Guelph through their research to cre-

ate an on line master business directory for Guelph, found on www.guelphchamber.com.Over 1800 busi-

nesses are available through searching key words and use of our local search engine. If your business is

not in this directory, it can be added at no cost by filling in the online form.Members of the Guelph

Chamber of Commerce receive the added benefit of telling more about their business, including a logo

and pictures.

Environmental: The Guelph Chamber has been involved in the development of our Community EnergyInitiative, led by the City of Guelph.Guelph Environmental Leadership has also partnered with this pillar

of sustainability.Guelph has over 60 megawatts of applications for solar power at the Ontario Power

Authority. That is over ¼ of Guelph’s current power demand. We have had two successful

www.PowerSavingsBlitz.ca programs offered to small business through Guelph Hydro. If you are not one

of the over 400 businesses that have taken part in this $1000 incentive to retrofit your lighting, you can

still join.Guelph continues to lead the way on water conservation and treatment, with research at the

University of Guelph, and businesses providing innovative solutions for water supply, waste water treat-

ment, and rainwater harvesting.Major projects are underway through Innovation Guelph,

www.innovationguelph.ca.

Social: Guelph has long been known as a centre of excellence for mental health.Trellis Mental Health andCommunity Services has partnered on the sustainable solutions task force. We now have a “catalyst

group” developing strategies around community and personal wellness, including mental health.Guelph is

also developing nutrition, functional foods, and exercise programs through our businesses, educational

institutions, and organizations.

Cultural:Over 40 organizations and artists are currently developing a new pillar, connectingArts andCulture to the business community. After all, artists are also entrepreneurs.Their tag line is “Guelph:Use

Your Imagination”.Clearly, that applies to all of the above.

2012 promises to be another great year to be alive in Guelph as we continue to develop connections

between all of these active and imaginative groups. The Guelph Chamber of Commerce is here to help

with advocacy, connections, and education.Guelph’sACE organization for over 140 years!

Preplanning

Pre-arranging one's own funeral is now widelypracticed across Canada. Gilbert MacIntyre & Son havebeen helping individuals and families with funeralprearrangements for almost 80 years. If you would liketo make an appointment to discuss prearrangements, please contact us. Or, if you like, you can prearrangeyour funeral online. You will be asked the same basicquestions you would in a one-on-one prearrangementmeeting; but within the "comfort" of your own lifestyle. Our experience in dealing with prearranging funeralshas lead to the development of the GILBERTMACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN for those who wish topre-pay their funeral expenses.

The GILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN retainsall the advantages of the pre-arranged funeral, but goesfurther with respect to the financial advantages.

· The GILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN ishedge against inflation. The cost of the funeral willnever increase, no matter how long it is before thefuneral services are required.

· Pre-payment reduces the financial demands on thesurvivors. Costs will be paid out of income now, rather than from much needed funds of the estate.

· Like a paid-up life insurance policy, this plan is ofimmediate and far-reaching benefit to survivors.

· Interest on funds held in a GILBERT MACINTYRE &SON TRUST PLAN is tax free.

· The GGILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN maybe purchased on a convenient time payment plan.Usually the prearrangment service is entirely paid forby the time it is needed, thereby relieving the familyof expense at the time of the funeral.

· Money is held in trust and fully refundable any time.

The GILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN isdesigned to comply with all regulations under theFuneral Services Act of Ontario and is fully insured.

The number of individuals who have ended their working careers orwho are considering doing so in the near future is growing at anexponential rate. Consider these facts–an average of 1000 babyboomers will reach age 65 every day in 2011, and by the year 2018Canadians age 55 and over will control almost 70% of the wealth inthis country. However, what many people don’t realize or consider isthat financial planning doesn’t stop once retirement begins. Giventhat many people are now living well into their 80’s and 90’s, theyneed a post retirement plan to protect the nest egg they accumulated

from things such as inflation, excessive taxation and therising cost of health care. Post retirement planning thenshould definitely be a priority in one’s financial strategy. One of the biggest factors to consider is the shift inspending priorities as we age.As we get older there isgoing to be amovement from the lifestyle expenses weexperienced in our working years to travel, health andlegacy considerations. Consequently, it is important tomake sure the financial plan is organized in amannerthat ensures one does not outlive his\her savings. The

post retirement plan needs to ensure that youare prepared for health events that could causefinancial setbacks that would significantlydeplete your resources or cause a loss of finan-cial independence. Be it costs related directlytomedication or possibly the expense of requiring long term care, there are a number of insurance products available to protect youfrom the impact of these events. The days when a person could count on a company pension andpossibly government pension programs to see them through thegolden years are gone.Having sufficient retirement income hasbecome the responsibility of the individual. Thus it is critical to estab-lish a proper financial plan well before you retire. Given the contin-ued volatility in both the global economy and the equity markets hereat home it is evenmore important to take steps to protect the assetsyou have accumulated to preserve not only your current lifestyle butalso the quality of your retirement. Simply put–expect the unexpect-ed-events that we can’t control such as family emergencies, changes inpension tax legislation, inflation and health setbacks will all have an

When work is done–planning continues by John Moran

impact on our financial well-being.The solution? Develop a financial strategynow either by yourself or with a qualifiedfinancial planner to ensure that your postretirement years are enjoyable and free offinancial stress. You work hard over thecareer years-make sure you reward yourselfduring retirement.

Itwas a serious brake, which required sur-gery, pins and a two-day hospital stay.Being in the insurance business I madesure I hadmyGroup Travel Insurancecard. As soon as the accident happened Icalled the number on the back of my cardand was directed to a local hospital. Most Group Travel Insurance is madeup of two components. The Out-Of-Country coverage pays for things likephysician fees, lab fees and hospital fees. The Travel Assistance connects you to anassistance coordinator that can direct youto an appropriate healthcare facility andmake travel arrangements. My coordina-

tor became a lifeline during those twodays. They kept in constant contact tomonitor my husband’s progress andanswer questions. They advised us on thetype of cast to request to ease the painfrom swelling on the flight home andeven upgradedmy husband’s ticket tobusiness class. As temperatures drop and employeesstart planning their winter getaways, a lit-tle preparation before they leave can turna terrible experience into amanageableinconvenience.Below are some safe travel tips for youremployees.• Read the Emergency Travel Insurance sec-tion of your Employee Booklet before your

leave. What is considered amedical emer-gency for the purposes of out-of-countrycoverage will depend of the specific terms ofyour group insurance plan.

• Don’t forget to pack your travel insurancepapers, alongwith emergency help number, including your family doctor’s contactinformation.

• If you are travelling outside of Canada or theU.S knowhow to dial an international oper-ator. Canada’s country code is 00.

• Bring your TravelAssistance Card, whichcan be printed from the employee portal ofmost insurance company’s websites.

• Leave the details of your insurance coveragewith a contact person at home.

• Pack enoughmaintenancemedication foryour entire trip.

• Consider talkingto your doctor toaddress any con-cerns about travel-lingwith amedicalcondition.

Most Group Travel Insurance plans donot include coverage for trip cancellation, trip interruption or loss or damage ofbaggage. Employees may want toconsider purchasing extra coverage fromanother source.A little preparation goes along way.

.Thanks to a $1,000 grant from the Small Business Lighting program offered by Guelph HydroElectric Systems Inc. and funded by the Ontario Power Authority, St. George’s Anglican Churchin Guelph recently upgraded the lighting system in one of its chapels–for free.St. George’s is one of the oldest churches in Guelph. It dates back to 1873 and its English Gothicarchitecture boasts grand vaulted ceilings and beautiful stained-glass windows. It’s a hub ofactivity in the community, hosting worshippers and community groups every day of the week.Much of the church’s operating systems, including lighting, are old and inefficient, dating backto the 1950s and 60s. The average monthly hydro bill for the church is $750. Church staff andvolunteers do as much as they can to conserve energy and use as much of the natural lightprovided by building’s windows as possible, but it’s often not enough light for the many groupsthat use its community rooms. The church has been working hard to upgrade its lighting to more energy-efficient compactfluorescent lights (CFLs) where possible but in some of the older parts of the church CFLsaren’t an option because the fixtures themselves are so old they can’t accommodate the newertechnology. So, when the church heard about the Small Business Lighting Program, theyimmediately signed up.The Small Business Lighting Program, offered through local electricity distribution companies

like Guelph Hydro and funded by the Ontario Power Authority, provides small businesses with a

free, no-obligation assessment of their energy use and up to $1,000 to apply against the cost of anenergy-efficient lighting retrofit. All equipment and labour is included and participants maychoose to proceed with all or just some of the project. There may be additional incentivesavailable for larger retrofits. An energy efficiency audit of the church revealed they could upgrade the lighting system of anentire chapel and replace old, inefficient 34-watt fluorescent bulbs and PCB-filled magnetic bal-lasts with T5 25-watt bulbs. It took roughly one week to rewire the chapel and install all the light-ing. The result is a savings of 525 kWh and $52.26 each year, at absolutely no cost to the church.“The Small Business Lighting Programmade it possible for us to get this work done,” says RonLeonard, the verger at St. George’s.“There’s a lot of cost involved in maintaining a church of thissize and age so we have to do everything gradually. We appreciate all the help we can get.”To date, more than 1,200 small businesses in Guelph have benefited from the Small BusinessLighting Program.Local businesses with an electricity demand of less than 50 kilowatts who are interested inupgrading their own lighting systems are encouraged to contact Guelph Hydro for direction onhow to proceed. Bulk and sub-metered customers may also apply.

Serving our community since 1861 Celebrating 150 YEARS

Fran Walser and her mother, the late Elizabeth(Betty) Ewing nursed for close to 75 of thepast 150 years–most of that time at St.Joseph’s caring for generations of patients andresidents, passing on a legacy of care fromone generation of caregiver to another.Walser, who started at St. Joseph’s in 1977, isstill a fixture in the Centre’s long-term caredepartment–a help and comfort to the resi-dents under her care and an invaluable

resource to her nursing colleagues.Graduating from St. Joseph’s School of

Nursing in 1938, Ewing was sought out in theearly 1960s by Sister St. Edmund Dales tobecome St. Joseph’s ‘3 to 11’ evening supervi-sor. For 25 years, she remained in that roleand was the ‘go-to’ person for all nursing staffworking in acute care, emergency, rehabilita-tion and St. Joseph’s chronic care unit.According to her daughter she loved and

appreciated her staff and gave her all to herpatients and to her nursing vocation. Hernursing certificates, school notebooks, text-books, cap and hypodermic needle kit havebeen carefully preserved and are on display aspart of the celebrations to mark St. Joseph’s150th anniversary.

“She lived it and she loved it,” says Walserof her mother’s commitment to St. Joseph’sand its mission of care. “I still have nursingstaff today who worked under her directionand who tell me what a wonderful nurse andconfidante she was for them.”According to Walser, her mother taught her

the value of the nursing profession and theimportance of having a good work ethic aswell as passing along the deep respect Ewingfelt for St. Joseph’s.“To those of us who worked with her, she

was an example of what a nurse should beand of what we all could achieve,” she adds.Evidently, Walser has taken her mother’s

example very much to heart, bringing thevalues she inherited to work each day, tothe benefit of the residents under her care.“Fran is an exceptional person,” says

St. Joseph’s resident Thelma Anderson. “Shealways listens when you talk to her and thentries everything possible to remedy whateverissue or problem you might be experiencing. Ifshe says she’s going to do something, she doesit. She is what I call a really dedicated nurse.”

A family affairThe Ewing/Walser connection to St. Joseph’sruns deep on another front as well. Fran’seldest daughter Jackie was born at St. Joseph’son December 25, 1972–the second to lastbaby in St. Joe’s maternity ward before itclosed that year. And yes, Betty Ewing was at

1861

On November 22, 1861 threeSisters of St. Joseph ofHamilton – Sister AlphonsusCashen and Sister IgnatiusPigott – arrived in the Royalcity to found Guelph’s firsthospital and home for the sick, aged and infirm.

The Hussey Farm House alongwith 25 acres of land wasdonated to the Sisters. Itoffered 16 beds to accommo-date the sick and the poor.

In appreciation for the help hereceived from the sisters, a pedlar planted a silver maplein front of St. Joseph’s.

1877

A $4,400 addition to the hospital was made to the two-storey limestone, 40-bed St. Joseph’s built by the Sistersin 1. The new buildingincreased the bed count to 77.

1887

The first telephone wasinstalled. Our phone numberwas 114.

1888

When Guelph experienced adeadly diphtheria epidemic, the Sisters care for morethan100 patients, losing only 13to the dreaded disease.

It cost 49 cents a day to carefor one person.

St. Joseph’s – A story of growth, commitment and service

St. Joseph’s 1861 - 2011 A proud heritage, an inspired1895

A new buff coloured brickbuilding, completed for$38,027.74 opened in October. The older buildings, built in1862 and 1877, were renovatedand then used as the House of Providence.

1925

Two wings were added to the1895 building at a cost of$130,000. The 104-bed hospitalhad private toilets, call but-tons, telephone receptacles anda sunroom facing south at theend of each floor.

1899

St. Joseph’s opened its owntraining school for nurses. In1902, nine Sisters were the firstgraduates. In 1904 lay nursesbegan enrolling. Six subjects, taught by six doctors, were onthe curriculum.

1940

Operating costs in the 1940scontinued to rise and both cityhospitals had to raise theirdaily rates, though theyremained lower than most hospitals in Ontario. Still, patients could enjoy a privateroom for $5 a day and newborns were cared for in thenurseries for $1 a day.

1955

Canadian children participatedin trials to test the effective-ness of the Salk vaccine againstpolio. This iron lung was usedto help regulate the breathingof young patients in Guelphwhose respiratory muscleswere attacked by the poliovirus.

1946

In 1946, Canada’s Baby Boombegan and continued until 1964resulting in about 18% (about1.5 million) more births thanwould otherwise haveoccurred. To accommodate thenew mothers and infants, thestudent nurses’ rooms wereturned over to patients but itsoon became clear that Guelphneeded more maternityresources. So, St. Joseph’sundertook another expansion.

1936

For many years, the Sisters operated a farm which suppliedmany of their needs as well as those of the patients. Cows andchickens provided milk and eggs while the gardens producedenough potatoes, parsnips, onions, turnips, and carrots to lastthroughout the winter. On one memorable occasion the Sistersundertook to raise ducks and geese but the birds made so muchnoise they disturbed the patients so that, in the end, the projecthad to be abandoned. The farm was discontinued after the warwhen hired help was hard to find and the surrounding areabecame more residential. Gardens, however, continue to play an essential role in St. Joseph’s recreation and therapeuticprogramming.

1914

Canada, as a loyal member of the British Empire, went to war inEurope. 64,944 Canadians were lost.

1951

A five-storey addition built on the north-east corner of the exist-ing building, facing Westmount Road, opened. The new additionoffered a third floor obstetrical department that boasted twolabour rooms and two care rooms. Each infant had its own cubicle with piped-in oxygen. Two special nurseries were constructed – one for premature babies and the other for ‘suspectbabies’ isolated for special care. Fathers, who in those days didnot participate in the birthing process, had a special waitingroom on the floor.

future, a living, growing mission St. Joseph’s 1861 - 20111959

Residents of the House ofProvidence moved into a newbuilding, St. Joseph’s Home, facing Edinburgh Road. A secondwing was set aside for the chronically ill. The spacious newresidence included a craft room, barber shop and library.

1974

After 75 years of operation, thelast class graduated from St.Joseph’s School of Nursing.Nursing schools in the provincethen came under the jurisdictionof community colleges.

1991 - 1992

To better utilize highly trainedstaff and improve patient outcomes, St. Joseph’s turned itsfocus to elective surgical care.1991 also saw the formation of St. Joseph’s Health CentreFoundation. In 1992, Ontario’sMinistry of Health confirmed St. Joseph’s future to rebuild as a long-term care centre ofexcellence.

2000

In January, excavation began ona new 254-bed long-term carecentre and a year later St.Joseph’s Hospital and Homechanged its name to St. Joseph’sHealth Centre Guelph.

2002

At the end of October our residents and patients left theirold home and moved next door to their new home at 100Westmount Road..

1984

A new logo and theme, designedto represent the recent amalga-mation of the Hospital andHome, were introduced.

1997

The Edinburgh Road lobby wascompletely renovated and a newtherapeutic garden for the residents to enjoy was opened. The cost of caring for one personfor one day was $530.

2006

To improve the efficient use ofhospital resources through better economies of scale, allshort-term and long-term rehabilitation care in Guelphtransferred from Guelph GeneralHospital to St. Joseph’s rehabili-tation hospital department.

2010

In November, St. Joseph’s officially opened its North Wingand it welcomed its first of 96new residents. And on November22 the sod was turned on a new80-unit affordable housing project under the auspices of St. Joseph’s Housing Corporation.

2011 and beyond

On September 7, the 150 year old silver maple tree, planted in 1861 was felled and a new silver maplewas planted. As the tree symbolizes, St. Joseph’smission is a living, growing entity – rooted in ourhistory, changing as our community needs it tochange. And St. Joseph’s will continue to servewhere and how Guelph/Wellington needs us toserve – as a hospital, a home, a resource and apartner – today, tomorrow, together.

2009

St. Joseph’s expanded again to meet growing community needswhen excavation began on another new addition. St. Joseph’s HealthCentre Foundation launched St. Joseph’s: The Next GenerationCapital Campaign to raise $6 million to help fund the 96 new long-term care beds and to construct a new Community Outreach AdultDay Program Centre, a new auditorium and a new rehabilitationgarden which will be the first of its kind in Canada.

honour of someone they admire or in remembrance of a loved one or friend who has passed away. These special gifts from
