Also occurring during the week will be the 2567 Showcase on Thursday night with our Senior Dance Group, Boys Dance Group, Bongo Drummers and Skippers performing at Elizabeth Macarthur High School. Then on Friday our infants children will demonstrate their speed and agility in their athletics carnival on school grounds. We wish them well and hope they have lots of fun. We would like to obtain some feedback about our reporting process through a very short survey. Your thoughts are valuable to us and if you could complete the survey, which only takes 4 minutes, we would appreciate it. This will guide our directions for the rest of 2017 and into 2018. Look for the link on the next page in the newsletter or on the Skoolbag app. Lastly, thank you to all parents and carers who were able to return carnival permission notes at such short notice. Dear Parents & Caregivers

Welcome to term three! I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable time during the holiday break.

Towards the end of last term we celebrated NAIDOC week with a variety of activities that recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The event was coordinated by our very own Aboriginal students who worked closely with Mr Martin and engaged the whole school in activities such as Indigenous games, Dreamtime storytelling and creating artworks. Child Protection Lessons

This term all classes will engage in child protection lessons, commencing in week 3. These lessons are conducted each year and form a vital component of our PDHPE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education) syllabus requirements and are delivered in a scripted and safe learning environment by the classroom teacher. Please see the attached information sheet from the Department of Education outlining our requirements and the sensitive delivery of this program. If you have any concerns please contact your child's classroom teacher or the school.

Stage 2 Learning in Action

On Thursday 26 June, Stage 2 students were involved in a range of learning experiences to demonstrate the real-world application of some of the concepts taught during term 2. Along with consolidating topics, Stage 2 teachers were focussed on the development of the 4Cs (21st Century learning skills) of critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity. We also had lots of fun! In 2/3P, students had to problem solve in small groups. Their task was to create and sketch shapes of a specified perimeter.

3/4B participated in a hands-on STEM activity where each group had to design a bridge using glue and paddle pop sticks. Students had to use team work and communication in order to plan and design a bridge that met specific requirements. We had a great day learning all about science, mathematics and most importantly working as a team!

Students in 4E worked in groups of 4 to design a 500 metre fun run track. This involved using a range of mathematics skills including measuring distances in metres using a trundle wheel, drawing a map of the path and timing each other while running the track. Teamwork skills and developing our collaboration and communication, were also areas of focus. Students then enjoyed testing out their designed routes and seeing who could achieve the quickest time!

4P thoroughly enjoyed the day. Our activity was focused on the PDHPE curriculum and involved working together in small groups to plan and create a modified game for the rest of the class to play. The morning session involved students brainstorming ideas and choosing a game or sport to modify and make their own. Students were asked to consider aspects such as rules, safety, time, playing areas, teams and purpose of the game. In the middle session we were able to get outside and enjoy the sunshine while learning about and playing each group’s game. The students that presented were organised and thorough in their teaching and evaluated and modified their games during play to eliminate safety concerns and to suit the abilities of all players. We had a fantastic day and will be continuing to play the students’ creative games during our fitness lessons!

4/5T were ‘employed as architects’ for Mrs Tidyman. She wanted a house designed that had a volume of 20 square metres. Each block represented a square metre. Mrs Tidyman was very fussy and decided she wanted her house to then take up an area of 8 square metres so some designs had to be changed. The architects were not very happy when Mrs Tidyman changed her mind for a third time and had to redesign their houses to have a perimeter of 12 metres. There were many successful designs that met the criteria of the client. Some designers said that they did not really want her business after all, as she was a very difficult client to deal with!

4D used the outdoor environment to support their learning and put their maths skills into action. With a beautiful sunny sky as their roof and tall green trees as their walls, the students applied their mathematical knowledge and skills to solve a variety of problems. The students built 3D objects using bamboo poles, measured the mass of a variety of rocks, measured the temperature of our compost bins using a soil probe and calculated the average and measured the volume of rocks using the displacement method. The students enjoyed the challenges!

3E had the task of designing and making a “car” and testing to see how far and how fast it would go. We had to work out rules so that all the tests were fair – like no pushing our cars, all starting from the same spot and using the same slope. Some of us worked collaboratively to design and make our cars while others worked individually. The ramp outside our classroom provided a great spot for testing the speed of our cars. We used a stopwatch to measure how long it took the car to travel from the starting line to the bottom of the ramp. Sometimes the cars did not make it to the end of the ramp because of design problems (some cars wouldn’t go in a straight line and crashed into the rail) and some cars simply fell apart because of construction problems. We tested how far our cars would travel by using a ramp in the classroom and measured the distance travelled. It was fun designing and making our cars and a great way to practise our measurement skills.

NAIDOC Week During NAIDOC week, the Aboriginal students and Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer, Lesley Marks, worked collaboratively to write a new Acknowledgement to Country. The new Acknowledgement to Country incorporates our school motto, Care, Believe, Succeed and is relevant and meaningful to our current students.

Acknowledgement to Country

Harrington Park Public School would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, who are the people of the

Dharawal nation.

As a community we care about our past and believe in our future.

We pay respect to Elders both past and present, who encourage us to succeed.

We recognise the shared stories of our diverse community.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

information for parents Dear Parents and Caregivers

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is one of the six key learning areas of the NSW primary curriculum. Our school’s PDHPE program aims to help our students develop and lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives.

Our school’s PDHPE program covers a wide range of education matter, including relationships, drug use, human sexuality, child protection, fundamental movement skill development, safety and physical activity. Some of the content of the program deals with sensitive issues. The school recognises this by teaching about these issues within the context of a developmentally appropriate program and by providing information to you about the program.

The PDHPE program aims to encourage students to make informed decisions about their lifestyle taking into account the values of the family, culture and religion to which they belong. The school program will be implemented in a manner that supports the role of parents and caregivers, and reflects the ethos of the school community.

An overview of some of the content of the PDHPE program is provided below.

Child Protection Education

• recognising and responding to safe and unsafe situations

• developing positive relationships and support networks • developing assertiveness (No Go Tell) • appropriate and inappropriate touching

Growth and development

• caring for the body

• body appearance, parts and functions • effects of illness and disease • rates and stages of growth and development • feelings about change • personal rights and responsibilities • changing relationships, feelings and needs • changes relating to and at puberty (Stages 2 and 3) • male and female characteristics • reproductive processes (Stages 2 and 3)

Personal health choices

• helpful and harmful drugs, including medications, tobacco and alcohol • nutrition • sun protection • personal hygiene

The school is required to inform parents and caregivers of the content of the curriculum as it deals with sensitive issues. If you have any issues or concerns please contact the school.
