Reflection and Discussion

The feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is a day when many children receive their First Holy Communion. Receiving First Eucharist is a very special occasion appropriately marked by family and parish celebrations all over the world. Jesus comes to us in a very personal way through the Eucharist and nourishes us in His Holy Spirit every time we eat His body and drink His blood. As St. Paul tells us in the second reading at Mass, it is through the sharing of the Eucharist that we remember the sacrifice of Christ and how much God loves His people.

The real presence of Christ in the Eucharist is a true gift to us. These questions help us think about how important this is for our lives:

• How is the Sunday Mass important to me? How is it important to my family? • Do I realize that the Lord is truly within me when I receive His body and blood at the Eucharist? • How am I changed each time I receive communion at Mass? • What does it mean to live in the spirit of Christ? • How can I show in my life that I am in communion with Christ?

The Church’s focus on the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist is an opportunity to renew our appreciation of the gift it is to be in communion with Christ and all those who share in this sacred meal. Every time we receive the Eucharist, we strengthen our bond with the communion of saints. This changes us, renews us, builds our confidence and gives us true purpose each time.
