Dear Parishioners, The third candle of the Advent wreath has been lit. The vestments are rose colored. It is Gaudete Sunday, Re-joice!!! John the Baptist points the way to Jesus. He tell us Pre-pare! Repent and believe! And so our season of Advent is a solemn time of waiting and preparing. The purple vestments and the purple candles on the wreath remind us that we are in a penitential season. So why the rose color on the third Sun-day? Because we rejoice in the midst of the waiting. Christ has already come in history and comes to us today in mystery. He is with us here and now and that is cause for rejoicing. Normally, there are four weeks of Advent, but since Christmas falls on Monday this year, next Sunday is the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve is that evening. So we celebrate only the Sunday of the 4th week of Advent. As we come closer to Christmas things get busier and busier. I will be in the confessional from noon until 1 o’clock this Sunday. At one o’clock we will go Christmas caroling and at 6 PM the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a Movie Night in the Parish Center. There will be snacks and drinks and the movie is “The Nativity Story”. Come join us for any of the activities. This Monday evening, December 18th, we will gather in the church at 7 PM for the final evening of prayer and reflection on Discipleship. The first two evenings were very prayerful. Come join us con-tinue reflecting on the four pillars of Discipleship. Since there are only a few hours between the end of Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve Mass, we will be decorating the church this Friday, December 22nd, beginning at 8:30 AM. It is always a joyous time of preparing to celebrate the Savior’s birth. You are most welcome to come join us as we prepare the church for the celebrations. A reminder about next weekend’s schedule: there will be only one Sunday morning Mass on December 24th. It will be at 9 AM. Masses for Christmas will be Sunday evening, Christmas Eve, December 24th at 4 PM, and Christmas Day, Monday, December 25th at 9 AM. May our hearts be ready and prepared to celebrate Christmas, to recognize that Jesus is already with us here and now, and to look with longing for His coming again in majesty.

Maranatha! Come quickly, Lord Jesus!

In Christ,

Fr. Don

REFLECTION FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT: “REJOICE ALWAYS.

PRAY WITHOUT CEASING AND GIVE THANKS” By Msgr. Bernard Bourgeois

Rejoice ... pray ... give thanks. A great trifecta for the season of Advent! If there is any liturgical season that is countercultural, it is Advent! While the world is scrambling and shopping for perfect Christmas gifts, the faithful are asked to rejoice, pray, and give thanks. While gift giving and family feasts and traditions are all good in and of themselves, they pale in comparison to that greatest gift of them all, Jesus Christ, the Word of the Father who was made flesh and now dwells among His people (John 1:14). Yes, the very Word of God the Father has been united to human flesh, and now the human person can know and touch God! This is the mystery of Christmas! It is also a very personal feast. The Christian is called to invite Christ into his heart and soul, to experience salvation. It is a symbolic moment in which the person can feel the reawakening of Christ in his life. Christians need Christmas every year to remind them-selves of the need of hope and new life, that life that can only come from Christ. That is Christmas! The reality of Christmas is one of the reasons the Church rejoices during this Advent season. Advent is a time of joyful anticipation for the mysteries about to be revealed. Think for a moment of a child looking at a beautifully wrapped gift beneath the Christmas tree. It might be there for weeks prior to Christmas itself. The child (and some adults, too!) will look at that gift and try to imagine what it is. He can’t wait for Christmas morning to unravel it and learn its contents! It’s that same joyful, eager anticipation of that child that the Church wants to capture during Advent. For the greatest gift of them all, Jesus Christ, is about to make His entry into the hearts and souls of the faithful. Christmas is a new beginning in which the disciples of the Lord call upon His presence once again to guide, support, and inspire them in their journeys of faith. Rejoice always! Your Lord is coming to bring you the good news of salvation. You are now a person of hope. In these last days of Advent,

one’s heart ought to beat just a little faster in anticipation of hearing those words at the Gospel of Midnight Mass: “ ... Today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord” (Luke 2:11). The anticipation and joy of Advent will drive the faithful into a life of prayer. In today’s second reading, Paul tells the Thessalonians to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thes 5:17). During Advent, the faithful are asked to stop all activ-ity and spend some extra time in prayer. Just be with the Lord, the One who is about to enter your heart and soul. How best to do that? In Advent, pray over the infancy nar-ratives of Matthew (chapters 1-3), Luke (chapters 1-3), and the Prologue (chapter 1) of John. Read a bit each day, slowly, taking in all of the words and images. You will know Jesus, His mother Mary, John the Baptizer, and Joseph inti-mately by Christmas. This will help you welcome the Savior on Christmas day! Try and make daily Mass during Advent to hear the beautiful readings from Isaiah and Paul, which will help you find Christ. Receive His Body and Blood to be one with Him. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will help you clean the slate of your soul from sin and darkness, to be ready for Christ. Finally, in Advent, give thanks to God for all the gifts He has bestowed on you. As Jeremiah 1:4-10 states, He has known, formed, appointed, and dedicated you! In Advent, however, realize that you’ve been given the great-est gift of them all, the gift of salvation, redemption, and hope, all one in Christ Jesus. The time of prayer during Ad-vent makes the faithful realize the need for Christ. Going it alone will not work; the human person yearns and pines for the presence of Christ in his life. There is no redemption out-side of Christ, and the faithful Christian realizes during Ad-vent the great need and hunger for salvation in Him. Give thanks to God for that gift! St. Paul gives a simple formula for Advent: rejoice, pray, and give thanks. All it will take is your time, energy, and dedication. Enter this holy season with eager anticipa-tion, for the greatest guest of them all is knocking at the door of your heart—Christ, your Lord and Savior!

SAINT PETER CANISIUS PRIEST & DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH

FEASTDAY DECEMBER 21 In 1565, the Vatican was looking for a secret agent. It was shortly after the Council of Trent and the pope want-ed to get the decrees of the Council to all the European bishops. What would be a simple errand in our day, was a dangerous assignment in the sixteenth century. The first en-voy who tried to carry the decrees through territory of hos-tile Protestants and vicious thieves was robbed of the pre-cious documents. Rome needed someone courageous but also someone above suspicion. They chose Peter Canisius. At 43 he was a well-known Jesuit who had founded colleges that even Protestants respected. They gave him a cover as offi-cial "visitor" of Jesuit foundations. But Peter couldn't hide the decrees like our modern fictional spies with their microfilmed messages in collar buttons or cans of shaving cream. Peter traveled from Rome and crisscrossed Germany successfully loaded down with the Tridentine tomes -- 250 pages each -- not to mention the three sacks of books he took along for his own university! Why did the Vatican choose Peter Canisius for this delicate task? Born in Holland in 1521, Peter had edited and writ-ten several volumes on Church history and theology, been a delegate to the Council of Trent, and reformed the Ger-man university from heresy. Called to Vienna to reform their university, he couldn't win the people with preaching or fan-cy words spoken in his German accent. He won their hearts by ministering to the sick and dying during a plague. The people, the king, and the pope all wanted to make Pe-ter bishop of Vienna, but Peter declined vigorously and ad-ministered the diocese for a year. For many years during the Reformation, Peter saw the students in his universities swayed by the flashy speeches

and the well-written arguments of the Protestants. Peter was not alone in wishing for a Catholic catechism that would pre-sent true Catholic beliefs undistorted by fanatics. Finally King Ferdinand himself ordered Peter and his companions to write a catechism. This hot potato got tossed from person to person until Peter and his friend Lejay were assigned to write it. Lejay was obviously the logical choice, being a better writer than Peter. So Peter relaxed and sat back to offer any help he could. When Father Lejay died, King Ferdinand would wait no longer. Peter said of writing: "I have never learned to be elegant as a writer, but I cannot remain dumb on that account." The first issue of the Cate-chism appeared in 1555 and was an immediate success. Peter approached Christian doctrine in two parts: wisdom -- including faith, hope, and charity -- and justice -- avoid-ing evil and doing good, linked by a section on sacraments. Because of the success and the need, Peter quickly produced two more versions: a Shorter Catechism for middle school students which concentrated on helping this age group choose good over evil by concentrating on a differ-ent virtue each day of the week; and a Shortest Catechism for young children which included prayers for morning and evening, for mealtimes, and so forth to get them used to praying. As intent as Peter was on keeping people true to the Catholic faith, he followed the Jesuit policy that harsh words should not be used, that those listening would see an example of charity in the way Catholics acted and preached. However, his companions were not always as willing. He showed great patience and insight with one man, Father Couvillon. Couvillon was so sharp and hostile that he was alienating his companions and students. Anyone who confronted him became the subject of abuse. It became ob-vious that Couvillon suffered from emotional illness. But Peter did not let that knowledge blind him to the fact that Cou-villon was still a brilliant and talented man. Instead of ask-ing Couvillon to resign he begged him to stay on as a teach-er and then appointed him as his secretary. Peter thought that Couvillon needed to worry less about himself and pray more and work harder. He didn't coddle him but gave Cou-villon blunt advice about his pride. Coming from Peter this seemed to help Couvillon. Peter consulted Couvillon often on business of the Province and asked him to translate Jesuit letters from India. Thanks to Peter, even though Couvillon continued to suffer depression for years, he also accom-plished much good. Peter died in December 21, 1597. He is known as the Second Apostle of Germany and was named a Doctor of the Church. In His Footsteps Peter believed in the importance in learning and under-standing the Catholic faith. If it is available to you, resolve to read a portion of the new Catechism of the Catholic Church. Don't try to read too much but consider reading a page a day. Before we can spread our faith we must have a solid foundation in ourselves.

Dear Father Wolford, We want to thank you for allowing our representatives to display olivewood carvings at your parish on November 25th and 26th, 2017. On behalf of the Palestinian Christian families in the Bethle-hem area, my family, and my staff, we wish to express our sincere appreciation for your trust. Thanks to the support of your parishioners, our total sales were $3,575.27. We are grateful for your understanding, interest and especially for your kind hospitality during our visit with you. Having at least two years off between visits is of a great importance so that the parishioners have enough time to get ready for our next visit. Father, thank you so much for your time, consideration, and gen-erous hospitality. May the Lord Jesus Bless you and give you the strength and wisdom to continue being a great shepherd for his people and his Church. Peace on earth. May God Bless you all,
