Unit 21: Biomedical Techniques Assessed by Teresa Greer
Start date: March 30th Hand in date: April 27th
PurposeLearners will examine the use of cellular pathology in disease diagnosis, monitoring and progression. They will look at a specific disease in case study to determine this informa-tion. In the course of this assignment students will:
✓ Examine how cellular pathology can be used to diagnose TB
✓ Examine how cellular pathology can be used to decide on the treatment types
✓ Examine how cellular pathology can be used to monitor disease progression
✓ Compare normal structure and disease structure and function
Scenario
We have recently been examining the disease tuberculosis in the context of infection and immunity. In this assignment we are going to examine how cellular pathology can be used to diagnose and monitor TB as well as define clearly what cellular pathology is.
Task A This provides evidence for P4 and M4
For this section you need to define exactly what is cell pathology and describe, using the example of Tuberculosis, its use in identifying underlying diseases. Begin with a brief de-scription of what TB is and how it is contracted then continue your report by looking at the following tests for TB:
Latent TB
✓Mantoux testing
Active
✓ Chest X-Ray
✓ Sputum Samples
✓Microscopy
✓ Culture
Non Respiratory
✓ Aspiration with a fine needle and biopsy of tissue.
For each technique you must outline what the technique is, what it shows and how it is appropriate for both diagnosis and disease monitoring

Task B This provides evidence for D4
In a short summary essay discuss the link between the biochemistry of maintaining an op-timum respiratory system and the malfunctions that cause the progression of TB. Your essay title is
Discussing the Biochemistry of TB
This should be no more than 1,000 words.

To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:
P4 define cell pathology and describe, giving ex-amples, its use in identi-fying underlying dis-eases
M4 explain using ex-amples, how a knowl-edge of cell pathology and biochemistry can help in following the course of a disease
D4 discuss the link be-tween a biochemistry system and the disease caused when it mal-functions
