Attached to the Chatter a couple of weeks ago were your enrollment papers for the 2016/2017 school year, and they are also available on the “links” tab of the login page for FastDirect. To hold your students’ spot, be sure to return your enrollment forms and 1/3 enrollment fee, and have your enrollment fee paid in full by April 30. Current church and school families have preference until March 1, when enrollment opens to the general public. If you know a family new to First Lutheran School that is interested in enrolling, have them call the school with their address, and we will mail them an enrollment packet (or they can stop by!). If you refer a family with a student in 1 st 5 th grades, and they remain enrolled through the first semester, in January of 2017 you will receive a $200 credit towards your tuition account! Tell your referred family to be sure and list your name as the referring family on the enrollment sheet. Three families earned a $200 credit this school year just by referring friends! EARLY CHILDHOOD BUILDING STUDENT PICK-UP: Remember that loading lines during pick up and drop off are for loading/unloading only; if you need to visit with your student’s teacher or other parents, or if you want to walk in to the school building, you will need to park in one of the designated parking areas. We will send notes home with your students reminding you what you owe when the hoodies come in (or, if you did pre-pay, we’ll just send the hoodie with your student). SICK KID? There are a variety of things we want our kids to share with each other, but illness isn’t one of them. Please remember that if your child has a fever, rash, been vomiting, etc., that they need to be fever/illness free for 24 hours before they return to school. See page 9 of the parent handbook for more details. If you have misplaced yours, contact the office and we’ll get you a new one. TALENT SHOW: Get ready for First Lutheran’s annual talent show! The show will be presented on April 1. Auditions will be held on March 23. Audition applications are available in your classrooms and are due in March 21. FREDDY’S NIGHT! First Lutheran School will have Freddy’s night on Thursday, February 18 from 4:00 8:00 p.m. All you have to do is have dinner at Freddy’s! When the cashier is ready to take your order, tell them you are there in support of First Lutheran School, and Freddy’s will donate a portion of your purchase to the school! Tell your friends, family, neighbors, and complete strangers. It doesn’t cost you anything more than the cost of your dinner, and the school will use the proceeds towards adding playground equipment for the younger students at the Early Childhood Building! AUCTION FAST APPROACHING: Mark your calendars now for the school auction on April 16. This is a fun evening of dinner and shopping for adults. More events will follow in future Chatters.

ENROLLMENT TIME! Attached to the Chatter a couple of weeks ago were your enrollment papers for the 2016/2017 school year, and they are also available on the “links” tab of the login page for FastDirect. To hold your students’ spot, be sure to

return your enrollment forms and 1/3 enrollment fee, and have your enrollment fee paid in full by April 30. Current church and school families have preference until March 1, when enrollment opens to the general public.

If you know a family new to First Lutheran School that is interested in enrolling, have them call the school with their address, and we will mail them an enrollment packet (or they can stop by!). If you refer a family with a student in 1st – 5th

grades, and they remain enrolled through the first semester, in January of 2017 you will receive a $200 credit towards your tuition account! Tell your referred family to be sure and list your name as the referring family on the enrollment sheet.

Three families earned a $200 credit this school year just by referring friends! EARLY CHILDHOOD BUILDING STUDENT PICK-UP: Remember that loading lines during pick up and drop off are for

loading/unloading only; if you need to visit with your student’s teacher or other parents, or if you want to walk in to the school building, you will need to park in one of the designated parking areas.

MATH COUNTS - Mrs. Goll: Yippee! I’m so proud of our MathCounts team! They took first place at the regional tournament we attended on Saturday. We will send notes home with your students reminding you what you owe when the hoodies come in (or, if you did pre-pay, we’ll just send the hoodie with your student).

SICK KID? There are a variety of things we want our kids to share with each other, but illness isn’t one of them. TAX STATEMENTS: If you would like a printout of your payments to First Lutheran School during 2015 for tax purposes, please stop by the office/send me a FastDirect-mail/or call the school at 762-9950. You can also print them off yourself by logging into your FastDirect account, scroll down to the bar that says “2007 Tax Year

Printout”, change the year to 2015, and click the box that has “Tax Year Printout” in it. This will include school-related expenses only; summer daycare tax statements must be requested from daycare. Remember that not all payments to FLS are tax deductible, and you should contact a tax advisor to find out what can be written off, and what cannot.

TAX STATEMENTS FOR SUMMER DAYCARE should be requested from Daycare. The tax statements that you get through the office/that you can print yourself only include charges for the school year, not summer daycare.

PRINCIPAL - Mr. Birnbaum: Lutheran School SPRING OLYMPICS - On March 7-11 our chapel families will be competing for "Gold, Silver, & Bronze" medals. Each family is choosing a country (not USA) to represent. They will earn points through a report & display about their country. Also through rhythmic dance, tricycle & running relay, team captain volleyball game, and even through team spirit and sportsmanship throughout the week. The "GOLD" will be given to the team that has earned the most points during the week. We will be learning/working on some of these things during our Chapel Services on "Running with perseverance" Hebrews 12:1.

Joke of the week: What do you call an old snowman? Answer: Water! DAYCARE: Parent survey's will be going home with the 2 & 3 year old program, teachers will also be sending home

with the after school children that attend on a regular basis. There will be extra copies in daycare if you would like to pick one up. Please return to daycare or school office by Monday, February 22nd.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: Thank you for all the sweet valentines! I am blessed to have the most adorable children to love every day! Class pictures are next week Thursday/Fri and I believe it is also a makeup day for individuals that missed the first picture day. Book orders are due the 26th. If you haven't sent your family quilt block in yet, please do so ASAP. This week our theme is "Quilts" as we work on the letter "Q". We are making good progress on writing our names, learning letters and their sounds, and counting to 30. Way to go PS! God bless and enjoy the short school week.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Kelly: Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed your three day weekend with your family! Thank you for all of the wonderful Valentines and the help with our party! It is a blessing to have your children each day! I hope you are catching your children doing random acts of kindness, I have seen some here at school. Our Bible words this week are, Jesus said, "Let the little children come to Me." Matthew 19:14 We are learning the letter "L" this week. Have a blessed week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Flaherty: Hope everyone had a lovely weekend! Thank you all for my valentine gifts and helping out with our classroom party. This week we would like to thank Relic's dad Darold Ross for visiting our room as a police officer today! We are working on the letter "Ee" this week and learning about Antarctica! Have a fantastic week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: I pray that everyone enjoyed their 3 day weekend and the nice weather! Memory verse for Friday - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galations 5:22-23. We have been singing The Fruit of Spirit song to help us learn this verse. Thank you for the nice Valentine gifts - they are very much appreciated! Thank you also Jennifer Heitman for the fun Valentine party. Book orders are due tomorrow. Just a reminder that we have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays - please make sure that your child wears tennis shoes on these days. Have a blessed week!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Our Valentine's party was amazing! Thank you to all the parents who made it so memorable. You are a blessing to us! We are making excellent AR progress. Just a few friends still need to reach their goal. Memory work is going well, too. Nearly every second graders knows their memory work when they arrive at school. We appreciate your help! Blessings!

THIRD GRADE - Mrs. Steichen: Happy Valentine's Day!! I hope everyone had a lot of love on Sunday. Thank you all for showing me love on Friday. Your children are a great joy and I love them all deeply. Thank you to all the parents who brought stuff and all who came. I though the game was a hoot. This week: Spelling and Memory on Friday. This week is the 3rd Article, next week we will say the whole Apostle's Creed. We have started Charlotte's Web, so no paragraphs or reading test for the next couple weeks. Remember book reports are due next Friday, if you have any questions please let me know! Have a wonderful week and enjoy the nice weather.

FOURTH GRADE - Mrs. Sibley: All Valentine’s Day boxes were wonderful and had lots of hard work put into them by all. I was very impressed! Congratulations to Adeline for the Most Creative or Unusual, Kylie for the Most Traditional, and Jaclynn for the Funniest boxes in the Valentine’s Day box decorating contest. Thanks you for all of the Valentines that I received. They were very yummy. Continue to read for AR. Some have made or are really close to making their AR goal. Many have found that without nightly reading at home, it can be difficult to make our AR goal.

FIFTH GRADE - Mrs. Schatte: Wasn't the three day weekend a blessing?! I hope you all enjoyed it. Tests this week include spelling and reading on Friday. We took a math test today over Lessons 61-65. Please see my Fast Direct Bulletin Board each week to keep up with tests and special notes that may not be included in the Cardinal Chatter. Thanks to all who pitched in to help with the Valentine's party on Friday. The children and I thoroughly enjoyed it. And thank you all for remembering me on my birthday and making it so special. I am truly blessed!

2/24 7:30 FLSCA 3/5 Math Counts State Tournament 3/9 7:30 FLSCA

MIDDLE SCHOOL: Your teacher has information on the radio contest sponsored by Team Radio. This is a chance

for you to write a Public Service Announcement and present it on the radio. Mrs. Goll: Yippee! I’m so proud of our MathCounts team! They took first place at the regional tournament we

attended on Saturday. Alex Lin took the first place award for highest individual score. Alex, Trenton, Ryan, and David have worked really hard to prepare for this event. Way to go, Guys. They will compete in the state tournament on March 5. Our classes are working on the following: 6th grade: measuring angles; 7th grade: ratios and unit rates; pre-algebra: slope intercept form and linear equations; algebra: quadratic equations.

Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings from the middle school! I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend. Our basketball teams and cheerleaders did a fabulous job at the Topeka Tournament. Thank you to Coach Redwine, Coach Killscrow, and Coach Hanson for all your hard work this season! Congratulations to our math counts team - Alex Lin, Trenton Kleinschmidt, David Miller, and Ryan Turnipseed - for placing first during the math counts competition on Saturday. Awesome job! I'm sure you all will do well as you head to the state competition in the next few weeks. God has truly gifted you all! In language, we continue to work on spelling, vocabulary, literature, and grammar. A few reminders...6th and 7th graders will be taking their AR tests on their books this Thursday, and 8th graders will be taking their AR tests on February 22. 7th graders, the due date for all projects is Friday, March 4. If you will be gone that day, you must hand in your projects beforehand. For everyone, continue to work hard as we head in to the last part of our third 9 weeks. Blessings on the rest of your week!

Mrs. Hanson: Now that basketball and cheer season is done, we will begin full preparation for the musical. The cast has been chosen, the music is being memorized, now we just need to collect props and get the show on the road! We are looking for prop donations either to borrow or completely donated. There is a list on my website.

7th and 6th grade had tests today and will be starting new chapters this week. 8th grade will have a vocab quiz this Friday.

Basketball and cheer banquet will be held March 29 at 5:30 pm in the cafeteria. All cheer uniforms need to be brought back to original condition, please clean thoroughly and return as soon as possible.

Mr. Covert: We’re already halfway through February. We’ve got only four weeks until we close out the third quarter, and along with Lent; it will fly right by.

In 8th grade, we’re wrapping up the Civil War. We’ll be moving into the Reconstruction next week, seeing how this war changed our nation drastically. We’ll be finishing up North and South Europe this week in 7th grade. We’ll be looking at Eastern Europe next. 6th grade is finishing up Roman civilization, and we’ll next be looking at the spread of Christianity.

I pray that God blesses us this week as we travel through Lent, and remember the Savior He sent that gave everything that we might be called children of God!
