    Steel: The Material of Choice

The Steel AdvantageSteel is the material of choice atHighland Tank because of its manyadvantages, and it should be yours

too. As a construction material, steel is strong, affordable, reliableand environmentally friendly. Steel’sunique combination of properties andcharacteristics enable it to achieveperformance levels required in today’sstorage tanks. Because of its productcompatibility, steel is the best choicefor your liquid storage needs, includingmotor fuels, biofuels, heating oils, aviation fuels, lube oils and chemicals.

Speci ed for StrengthWe buy steel according to our ownstrict guidelines and rigid ASTMspeci cations. All of our mild carbon

steel is ne grain with superiortoughness and surface quality thatoffers both weldability and improvedcorrosion resistance. The time-testedstrength and performance of steelremains unparalleled.

Steel’s structural integrity can withstandeven extreme weather conditions ornatural disasters. State-of-the-artfabrication technology, welding, interiorlinings and exterior coatings reinforcethe durability of Highland’s mild carbonand stainless steel products.

Environmental Bene tsSteel has the highest recyclingrate of any durable material in theUnited States. Unlike concrete or

plastic storage tanks, or even thosereinforced with berglass, recycledsteel storage tanks ultimately keep avaluable commodity out of the nation’sland lls. In addition, the latest recyclingprocesses drastically reduce industrialemissions by over 70% to air andwater, accompanied by a reductionof approximately 30% in the amount ofenergy required to produce new steel.

    Superior Structual Strength

Recycled steel productsare important to projects

striving to achieve LEEDcerti cation. Highland Tankcan help companies earnvaluable Materials andResources credits.

We can supply a full range ofequipment packages, and we excelin custom fabrication for thoseunique situations.

Material SelectionThe fabrication process begins withthe rolling of steel that meets ASTM

speci cations. Steel plates from 7gauge to 1.25" are rolled to form therigid shell.

Steel plates are formed, tted andlap-welded to provide superior“ribbed” strength. Flat- anged headsare standard, as are continuousexterior welds on all joints. Imperviousbulkheads are added to createcompartments for multiple uid

    storage options.

Fittings of various sizes and stylesenable connections to external pipingsystems. Emergency vent ttingsare standard on all abovegroundfuel storage tanks 24" diameter, orlarger. Cylindrical or large rectangularmanways allow for convenient accessfor inspection and maintenance.

100% Secondary ContainmentDouble-wall tanks are constructedby wrapping an impervious

secondary wall completely aroundthe primary tank.

The space between the two walls, known as the interstice, assures arapid uid migration rate not less thanone centimeter per second, vastlysuperior to the allowable rate. Theinterstitial space can be electronicallymonitored to immediately detect a leak;any breach in the wall of the tank that

results in a leak can be immediatelyaddressed without impactingthe environment.

Emergency vent ttings are standardon both the inner and outer tanks ofdouble-wall aboveground fuel storagetanks, per re codes.

    The Ultimate Protection(DW UL-2085)Fireguard ® re-protected tanks are

cylindrical or rectangular double-wallaboveground tanks. The exterior steelwall provides superior weatherabilityand low-cost maintenance. Theinterstice, a minimum of 3" around theinner tank, is lled with a lightweightmaterial which provides thermalinsulation for a 2-hour minimum

    re rating.

Both inner and outer tanks can be

tightness tested and are equipped withemergency vent ttings. Our Fireguard ® tanks meet or exceed requiredstandards for protected, insulated,

    re-rated storage tanks.

Unique Secondary Containment(DW UL-1746)The inner tank is constructed similarly

to a UL-58 single-wall steel tank, but the outer thermoplastic tank ismade from a high molecular weightpolymer creating a tough, economicaldouble-wall tank. The intersticedesign assures uid migration to themonitoring system. This innovative tanktechnology is Highland Tank’sown TITAN ®.

    Factory Testing

A 5 PSI factory air test and seaminspection is conducted on everystorage tank. All undergrounddouble-wall storage tanks are shippedwith a vacuum on the interstice forcontinuous testing to guaranteeintegrity of both the primary andsecondary tanks.

Performance CoatingsProper surface preparation is animportant factor in any successful

coating or lining. Quality assuranceis maintained through Highland’scomplete in-house grit blast cleaning,

nishing and curing facilities. Ourfacilities are temperature-controlled foryear-round application. Only quali edand experienced personnel, workingunder stringent guidelines, spray appliedhigh-performance formulations, includingepoxies and high-build polyurethanes.Exterior coatings and interior linings are

    Working Together for aCleaner Environment

Responsible ManufacturingReducing the environmental impactof our products starts with the product

design phase. Design dictates thequantity and type of raw materialsused, recyclability of materialsand energy consumption requiredfor manufacturing.

Today, environmental issues areimportant criteria for material selection.

All of our steel tank products are 100%recyclable after use. Although recyclingis important, we don’t stop there.

Highland Tank works hard to gatherand recycle our waste steel at all of ourfactories during and after production.

Also, our decision to reduce the useof VOC-laden paints and completelyeliminate the use of solvent-rich

berglass reinforced polyestermakes our product line much moreenvironmentally friendly than ourcounterparts. Highland Tank helps to

safeguard the environment — as wellas consumers’ safety — by restrictingthe use of these environmentallyharmful compounds in our materialsand manufacturing processes.

Environmental protection is one ofour highest priorities. How we impactthe environment is important to us,and environmental considerations arean integral part of Highland Tank’sbusiness practices. The steps wetake today to preserve our planet willultimately affect the health andwell-being of our children. From theearliest stages of product designthrough manufacturing, recyclingand usage, we take care to keepour activities and our productsenvironmentally sound. Our progressive

thinking, inventive policies andpioneering spirit are helping to makethe world a greener, cleaner place forour children.

Product DesignIt all begins with the design andmanufacturing of tank productsspeci cally required to safely storesome of the most hazardous materials. Our company produces the industry’s

Barrel TanksHighland Tank barrel tanks are the idealsolution for storage of a wide varietyof production liquids while using theleast amount of valuable real estate. They are fabricated under Highland’s

strict quality control procedures toindustry standards for the safe storageof produced water, crude oil andother liquids commonly handled andstored by natural gas exploration andproduction companies.

Highland Tank also offers a premiumGas & Oil Field Tank design that takesthe barrel tank to a whole new level. Our stronger lap-weld construction

and heavy-duty polyurethane coatingsinside and out result in a stronger,longer-lasting tank. Couple that witha custom L-shaped skid, and you’vegot the “ultimate” barrel tank – a more

robust tank that allows for the mobilityand exibility required in the toughnatural gas drilling industry.

    With our reputation for unmatched

quality and service, Highland Tankmakes sure these barrel tanks areworker safe. Our OSHA-compliant

xed ladder and cable-climbingsystem includes all of the necessarycomponents for fall protection whenaccessing the rooftop vents, manwaysand hatches for periodic inspection andmaintenance. And with our optional100% double-wall construction,Highland Tank helps the drilling industry

comply with environmental regulations, which are often more stringent inunconventional gas regions such as theMarcellus and Utica Shale areas.

Standard Tank Features • Mild carbon steel construction

    The Over ll Protector

    OP Tanks

The OP Tank is equipped with apatented over ll protection systemand integral over ll chamber designedto capture and store over lls resultingfrom mistakes or failures during llingoperations. Unlike other forms ofsecondary containment, the OP keepsthe product in the storage tank where itcan be easily recovered and used.

    Over ll Protection From:

    • Malfunctioning over ll limiter

    • Unattended delivery truck

    • Malfunctioning vents

    • Distracted delivery attendant

    • Malfunctioning gauge

    • Incorrect inventory record

    • Malfunctioning alarm

OP Tank FeaturesIn the unlikely event of an over ll,the patented Over ll Protector chutedirects the spill into the ContainmentChamber. The chamber is largeenough to contain a spill of at least20% of the tank’s storage volume. Thecollected product can be recovered bypumping it back to the primary tank,or to another storage tank, through thepump-out tting located on the top ofthe tank. Since the entire OP Tank is ULlisted for ammable and combustibleliquid storage, the Over ll Protector andContainment Chamber do not need tobe cleaned or freed from vaporsafter pump-out.

OP Tank OptionsThe OP Tank is available as a UL-2085Fireguard ® tank or as a standard singleor double-wall UL-142 ® horizontal tank.In addition to our standard features andoptions, we can also supply a larger(above 20%) Containment Chamber ifgreater spill containment is required.

Consult Highland Tank if a larger(above 20%) spill containmentcapability is required.

    Dike Tanks

    Flameshield ®

Dike tanks are a versatile abovegroundsecondary containment alternative. Theimpervious steel dike contains spillsfrom the tank, piping and associated

equipment, and it prevents theirrelease into the environment. Theentire unit meets UL-142 ® and NFPA30 speci cations for primary andsecondary containment. In addition toour standard features and options, wecan also supply rain shields or gabled, shed or rolled-top canopies to keep outrain, snow and debris.

AREO Dike tanks were the rst of

their kind to obtain an UL label for theentire secondary containment system, not just the primary tank. The uniquerain shield system prevents water anddebris accumulation in the containmentdike while making provisions forvisual monitoring.

AREO Dike Tank Features • The integral spill-containment chamberaround the ll connection providesan over ow pipe to divert any spilled

    product into the containment dike

    • A large over ow chute ensures thatany over ll will be diverted from theemergency vent directly into the dike

    • Removable rain shields minimize rain, snow and debris accumulation inthe containment area while allowingfor easy visual inspection and accessfor maintenance

    • Available with the safety of UL-2085 ® Fireguard ®, it is listed for “InsulatedSecondary Containment ProtectedType” AST

    U.S. Patent Nos. 4,895,272and 5,346,093

The Flameshield ® design meets thedemand for fuel storage where reresistance, environmental safetyand possible future relocation areprimary concerns. The double-walldesign provides for integral secondarycontainment with interstitial monitoringwithout the external diking. Thesecondary containment can betightness-tested on-site usingstandard testing procedures.

    • Meets National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 30/30A criteriafor re-resistant AST

    • Tested by Southwest ResearchInstitute to SwRI 97-04, for 2 hoursat 2000° F

    • Built with strict independentthird-party quality control

The HotShot is the most innovativeheated product storage tank system inthe industry. The HotShot is designedspeci cally for the safe storage ofheavy residual fuel oils (RFO), such asNo. 6 fuel oil. Since No. 6 fuel oil is sothick and viscous, users heat the oilto over 150 degrees Fahrenheit beforeburning it. Due to the complexity ofstoring the heated fuel, RFO usersmust be on constant guard against theenvironmental hazards brought aboutby faulty storage tanks.

The HotShot design and construction ismulti-layered for optimum performanceand safety. We begin with a steelstorage tank designed and constructedin accordance with UL-58 standardsand certi cations, as well as tocustomer speci ed design criteria. Thetank surfaces are protected againstcorrosion with a rmly bonded, damageresistant coating. An industrial high-temperature, two-part catalyzed interiorcoating is applied over a grit blast formaximum interior surface protection.

Additionally, a high temperatureresistive exterior coating, coupled witha pre-engineered cathodic protectionsystem, creates a dependable dielectricbarrier between the tank and theunderground environment.

Deadmen Anchors are beams ofreinforced concrete placed alongsidethe tank in the bottom of theexcavation. The weight of the back llon the Deadmen Anchors provides

additional resistance to buoyancyforces acting on the tank. Properlyinstalled Deadmen Anchors, whenused exclusively with PolyesterHold-Down Straps and the suppliedhardware, prevent tank otation andcost less than a concrete bottomhold-down pad. Best of all, there is nodelivery charge for Concrete Deadmen

Anchors when they are shipped onthe same truck along with a Highland

Steel Hold-Down StrapsThis guide provides information aboutSteel hold-down straps manufacturedspeci cally by Highland Tank. Theguide references dimensions ofstandard underground tanks. Also

referenced are hold-down strapspeci cations, recommended quantity, spacing and anchor bolt requirements.Contractor-supplied anchor bolt sizesmust be in accordance with this guidefor proper t and system performance.

This guide is intended only as an aid toprofessional engineers. Highland Tankrecommends that underground storagetank anchorage systems be designedby a licensed professional engineer.

    A. Steel Hold-Down StrapsSteel hold-down straps aremanufactured from mild-carbon steelwith an adjustable turnbuckle andangle clip on each end for securingtanks in place. Neoprene rubber linersare supplied for electrical isolation andcoating protection. Standard straps aresized so that when the turnbuckles arecompletely closed, there will be six (6")

inches between the anchor pad andthe tank bottom. Turnbuckles canbe opened to allow up to twelve (12")inches of clearance.

    B. Safety Hold-Down StrapsSafety hold-down straps are designedto avoid having installation personnelin the excavation during tankplacement. They are manufactured intwo pieces and shipped connected

with a threaded tie rod at top center. These straps are designed to beinstalled before placing the tank inthe excavation. By loosening the tierod, the two pieces are separated andeach rotated 90˚ to 180˚ away fromtheir original position. After the tank ispositioned, the strap’s sides are rotatedback toward each other and tightenedover the tank with the tie rod and nuts. Due to shipping restraints, safety straps are required for tanks with a diameter of 10' or greater.
