From the Desk of Michael SennettDear Parishioners,

Do you use social media? Unsurprisingly if you answered yes, you are in the majority—about 70% of Americans are immersed in on-line platforms1. Facebook and YouTube are the most popular sites for adults in the United States. Although Twitter, Instagram, Snap-chat, TikTok, and other forums pale in comparison to these giants, the number of users continues to steadily increase. What, if any, are the consequences of our screen time? Exposure Labs’ recent docu-mentary, The Social Dilemma, tackles just this question.

Former designers and engineers from Silicon Valley interviewed -

cial media, particularly the algorithms that direct our feeds. One con-cern they all share is addiction. The content we encounter online is designed to pique our interest. When we react, we get more of it,

are designed to make us want more. Think about how many times a day you pull out your phone or open a computer to check your ac-

Another focus of these interviews is that of polarization. Many of us are familiar with targeted ads. After searching an item online, have you ever noticed that an ad is likely to appear on your timelines the next time you open Facebook, Twitter, Insta-gram, etc? We often overlook the fact that every time we like, share, or comment, it

are taken as reactions. The codes are de-signed to prioritize positive reactions. Over time we see less content we disagree with. While we may be relieved to avoid certain friends and followers, ultimately, we are doing a disservice to ourselves by creating narrow echo chambers where everyone shares our points of view. This only leads to further division under an illusion of unity. Leaders can easily take advantage of this to manipulate their support-ers into believing false information to further an agenda of hatred.

It is no secret polarization is expanding, and that is in part due to social media, but there are other contexts for the political climate of the U.S., such as our history of racism, violence, and xenophobia. That being said, it would be naïve to dismiss the role social media does play in division. But why is this relevant to our faith?

As Christians, and particularly as Catholics, we must recognize the inherent dignity of each person above all else. We are all loved sin-ners, children of God. Although we may disagree on issues of faith, justice, politics, culture, etc., there is a place at the table for everyone. I do not have the right to judge one’s relationship with God based on their political views. What I can do is follow my conscience, formed by the Church, to bring the Gospel to life and make a commitment to address injustice.

If I am being honest, however, this notion of similarity appeals to me, as it does to many. Evolution compels us to community. It is no wonder we form bonds with likeminded individuals for safety and comfort. Interpersonal communication teaches us that everyone has sets of values, some being non-negotiable. We align ourselves based on our static values. In our quest for validation, we become “othered” to each other.

I believe, along with the Church, however, that most people are ultimately good and want what they believe is best based on their circumstances. But we are also sinners, prone to our own self-inter-est. We are in need of conversion, but it cannot be forced, and it is

not always possible because we do not and never will live in a utopia. Perhaps we may try to confront our own discomfort and that of others through a lens of reconciliation or love. By seeking the grace

was previously covered in the thorns of contempt. Christianity is not unity based in uniformity, rather Christianity is unity based in diversi-ty. This is what makes God’s love overwhelmingly present.

To return to The Social Dilemma, it certainly possesses its fair share

and frames much of its impact with gloom and doom. Still this is a documentary worthy of your time. It helps to bring awareness of how social media manipulates and narrows our perceptions of reality – the true social dilemma of our time.
